Plenty of people with lots of cash just don’t care too much about longevity. These buyers just want to look good and say “hey, look at me”. Others just trade in every 3 years or less. It’s nice too be rich when buying cars. Unfortunately, this small percentage can’t keep the industry going.
these are all good engines to run away from. I'm surprised you didn't mention on the Audi 4.2l DI V8, the ticking time bombs are the plastic timing chain guides which Audi thoughtfully decided to put at the BACK of the engine - those can wear out pretty quick if you're on it a lot or get lazy with the oil changes. so, any timing work on those is an engine-out affair, hence the expense. you can catch it before actual engine damage occurs, but the cost is still enormous. everyone loves to peg German cars as unreliable, but all cars are about maintenance - you will get out of them what you put into them. poor engineering is readily identifiable - Nissan CVTs that no longer T, Ford EcoBoosts with the open-deck crackheads, GM V8s with AFM-bent pushrods, Subaru EJ25 single (and ready to mingle)-layer head gaskets, older Acura 5-speed self-consuming automatics, etc. but Porsche and Audi maintenance procedures are often so demonic that many owners simply do not keep up with it, and the subsequent ones are saddled with paying off their deferred maintenance debts. and parts expenses often result in the same for BMW and Mercedes. if you can DIY though, there are plenty of older German panzers around that you can actually work on and get decent parts for cheaper, and those will take you the long haul without costing you any appendages. just a thought - if you look up the list of the top 10 vehicles with the highest mileage ever recorded, the first is a Volvo and the second is a Mercedes. no Japanese cars even made the top 10 despite their excellent overall reliability, but a Silverado, F150, and Lincoln Town Car did.
BMW used to make bulletproof 6 cylinder engines. They need to return to that ethos. By all means make sporty cars , but keep the majority of the range ultra reliable.
10:30 Regarding the M156 they upgraded the head bolts in late 2011 so all engines after that had no problem with their bolts. As for premature intake camshaft and lifter buckets wear - true, depending on the oil you run you may end up having to replace the cams and buckets at about 150k km. The final issue is that you'd be wise to replace the fuel injectors after 100k km, as some would get stuck open and hydro lock the engine. If you can dish out the money for the new cams and buckets the engine is indestructible, as they overbuilt everything else -- pistons, conrods and crankshaft. In fact, you can put a supercharger without replacing any of those mentioned.
I have a 2019 640ix GT. 45K miles with the B58 powertrain (3 liter twin scroll turbo). No issues. None. I must be lucky so far, Super quiet, handles great, under 5 sec 0 to 60, air bag suspension, Great infotainment. All things except quietness than Lexus didn't have. BMW also has great infotainment system( I drive 7) Lexus sucked. Still waiting for a Lexus GS replacement that can compare to the 6 series. Might be a long wait BMWs rear biased awd system is great . Lexus has nothing that can compare.
Guess I’ve been very lucky with my 2009 BMW 335i M Sport convertible. Bought it two years ago ( she had just over 56,000km ) and so far had a check engine light which required two vacuum hoses to be replaced. No coolant leaks whatsoever. But I do drive the car very little ( mostly in the weekend ), and let it idle for 30-60 seconds before driving it and do likewise before shutting it off ! And of course the oil change is done every year ( once a year as I mostly put 3000km / year on her. I treat it like my baby and always wanted to own one of these cars ! ( imo it’s a much more desirable car than the first and second generation 4 Series !! ). The previous owner bought it new and kept it for almost 12 years and all the servicing was done at the dealership.
If you believe the consumer reports tlhat german cars are more reliable than the japs, you are just dumb and naive. It is paid and bribed. Reasons people say german cars are reliable. 1. They never keept car longer than 150k+ miles. 2. They lie because they dont want to feel stupid for buying the shitty car brand. Biased opinions. 3. Diy. They fix things themselves and they omit the problems as problems 4. Leasers. They dont keep the car long enough to know its reliability 5. Fake comments from fake accts paid by these companies to make consumers confuse! I have friends and families in car repair business. Ive owned 2 bmws before too. My dad had benz s500. It was a pos.
If you like European luxury with a big powerful engine and don’t mind going older, the W211 E55 AMG from 2003-2006 is an AMAZING option. Reliable, smooth, and fast as all get out. Just make sure to do your homework.
Having worked for Mercedes for a couple of decades I can honestly say one of the best engines AMG have made is the M156, I have worked on literally hundreds of them and if serviced regularly they are bomb proof, only the very early ones had head bolt issues and they have all been rectified by now, we had a regular customer come in with a S63 that had over 300,000km on the clock, seen hundreds with over 100k on them with little to no issues. Not only that but it’s actually also a incredibly simple engine my modern standards, it’s definitely something I would spend my hard earned on and that’s not from a enthusiast perspective but from a mechanics perspective. The om271 was a absolute piece of sh!t though and I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.
I totally agree with you. I own a 2009 C63 with 115,000km on it and have never had any problem with it for the 10 years I’ve had it, with the original head bolts still on. I have a lot friends from the AMG club with even more kms on their M156 and never had any problem. Sure, these issues happen but it only affects a small percentage, imagine more than 40,000 W204 C63 were built, and this number does not include the M156 from ML63 and E63. The only issue with this engine is the higher maintenance cost (fuel consumption and oil changes) compared to Japanese engine but it will definitely always put a smile on your face every time you drive it and hear the exhaust note. People who complain about M156 are the people who have never owned one and people who don’t take care of their cars.
I have a N63TU and the only issues I really have is keeping my foot off the gas so much lol but I give religiously oil changes every 5K miles and I’ve done a brake flush new rotors and pads engine air filter and cabin air filter and it has 93K miles on it going strong
This is why I stay with my lexus. No it does not have the driving dynamics of the Germans, but It is rock solid reliable and I spend very little to maintain it.
All the cars you've shown are disposable. I was told rent a euro, thrash $h!t out of it, then return it. rent another one, thrash it, return it. rinse and repeat.
I definitely agree with this however in my experience BMW has good customer support. Could you make a video on customer experience for different brands?
I once rented a 2016 M6 grand coupe and a warning light (low oil) came on and I had to scramble before the auto part store before it closes to buy oil.
Happy New Year Mark. If you are like me and love to see carnage, check out Eric at I DO CARS. He has many tear downs with piston and valve collisions. When a piston is destroyed, he calls them PISTON MCNUGGETS. If there is damage inside the cylinder, he calls that MALICE IN THE COMBUSTION PALACE. He owns some Bimmers and talks about the issues. He tears an engine apart every Saturday evening around 9pm. He even tore apart a 3UR FE that failed due to severe overheating due to neglect. Also, he says the 4 banger in the Honda element was near bullet proof but some nice lady cooked the engine black n blue. Anyone who doubts your wisdom, I recommend I DO CARS. Eric even says often what Scotty says....CHANGE THE OIL OFTEN. So many engines were ruined due to neglect.
Perhaps with the BMW Big Daddy you could modify the hood for air intake and wrap everything around the turbos? The whole thing sounds crazy. B. Urn M.y W.allet.
hahaha love; I liked the analogy of mike tyson...yeah you're right; even my E92 328i 6MT gives me trouble at times (it is been highly reliable), I can image an N54

It might be shorter to simply list the only engine/gens that are worth considering. M57s with a "delete" are good, B58 seems promising . . . apart from that the pickings are slim. The pre N54 non-turbo six cylinder engines were pretty reliable.
@@rayaany.4069 research the topic, quite a few reports on it and most owners don't change their own oil so they never know...supposedly improved in recent years but it's not an S58
you dont need luxury cars to have all these issue, I have a 2011 Peugeot 308 with the Prince turbo engine (BMW N14), it has all these problems, combined
As a current Lexus GS owner; I'm looking at trading for a BMW 540i (2017-2020). Considering that the B58 motor is one of the most reliable engines from BMW, do you believe this is a good trade?
Like Mark any mechanic will tell you that. BMW's are mostly plastic. Even under the hood. Plastic is a week material. It also dries out and becomes very brittle. Faster so under the engine hood. Making all of these components. Something the mechanic worries about both initially breaking. As well as additionally breaking.
The B58, the engine in the G30 540i, has been super reliable so far. Most 340i, 440i, 540i, G11 740i, and 840i will be great daily cars and reliable. I think the 540i would be a good option if you’re looking for an upgrade in comfort, driving experience and fun reliability. There are also many BMW forums, reports, and social media examples of how well made the B58 is.
@@ariesmight6978 are the current BMWs with the B58 engines still having issues with plastic parts and materials breaking? From my understanding; BMW addressed the issue by heat shielding the plastic materials.
8:02 is what I was waiting for 💀 I know I’m a unicorn but my 2013 328i with the N20 is running like a champ even at 140k miles without the oem timing chain being replaced (still looking at replacing it and the guide just to be safe)
Nice that you found all these cars on lots and gave us a view instead of typical google images samples. But its a bit misleading/confusing for the average guy watching this. The n54 and audi 4.2 v8 in the s4 are trash but youre showing on video v6t and n55 which are both extremely reliable engines. I know you made the disclaimer but still people can be confused considering its most likely people that dont know much about these cars watching this . Especially with the 435 looking completely different and having nothing to do with the 335 (2007-2010). I say those years because obv in 2011 they share the n55 engine till 2017.
As good as these cars are, and they're reasonably durable, I would NOT keep any of them past the 80k point...especially the Audi, any Audi. Those electrical/elecrtonic issues can drive you INSANE. My brother didn't listen and he took his A6 past 80k and only 10k later, he is facing a horrendous bill approaching $10k CDN. When he told me he has 94k, I just laughed and told him, ten large is a "good start".
You don't have to drive very far for these type of videos if they have Audis and BMWs on the lot as they provide a lot of source material. It is a shame, the cars have nice styling, but they should be leased for a couple of years then turned in.
2 notable errors in your video: The 4.2 V8 S4 was from 2004-09 (not 2003-05) and was replaced by the V6T 2010-2016 (which showed in your video) was actually a supercharged NOT Turbo despite it saying V6T, the Turbo V6 did not appear until 2018 and looks different than the car you were showing
Lexus, Acura, Infiniti never went to 10k or 12k oil services and they avoided issues. BMW, Audi, MB when 6k oil services are done have near Lexus durability. The hardening seals, brittle chain runners, sludged cam phasers and phaser solenoids all go to 100k or more miles beyond their typical failure points. The longer intervals were pushed by factory paid maintenance coverage and legislation in EU countries. I know less oil handled is "green" but mountains of bad engine parts is not green.
I have had toyotas for the last 20 years and change oil every 10K miles with full systhetic. No issues. Camry hybrid 185K miles, highlander hybrid 190K, current 2012 sienna 130K miles prius, 1995 T100 200K miles, no issues, current 2018 highlander hybrid 70K miles, no issues.

everyone loves to peg German cars as unreliable, but all cars are about maintenance - you will get out of them what you put into them. poor engineering is readily identifiable - Nissan CVTs that no longer T, Ford EcoBoosts with the open-deck crackheads, GM V8s with AFM-bent pushrods, Subaru EJ25 single (and ready to mingle)-layer head gaskets, older Acura 5-speed self-consuming automatics, etc. but Porsche and Audi maintenance procedures are often so demonic that many owners simply do not keep up with it, and the subsequent ones are saddled with paying off their deferred maintenance debts. and parts expenses often result in the same for BMW and Mercedes. if you can DIY though, there are plenty of older German panzers around that you can actually work on and get decent parts for cheaper, and those will take you the long haul without costing you any appendages.
just a thought - if you look up the list of the top 10 vehicles with the highest mileage ever recorded, the first is a Volvo and the second is a Mercedes. no Japanese cars even made the top 10 despite their excellent overall reliability, but a Silverado, F150, and Lincoln Town Car did.
My 2010 S63 AMG has no problem whatsoever, & I prefer NA lot more than newer turbos(w downsized engines) since 2011.
@@tonyluk112 Keep that car as long as you can. The modern way is downsizing and the sad end-goal is electric 💀
@@tonyluk112 I have a 2014 C63 with that engine, keeping it till the wheels fall off.

Looked like you're having a grudge toward/against BMW 🤣, your video is always informative for the future buyers of vehicles 👍
He used to be biased towards bmw. He said bmws are reliable. He lied. I called him out on his bs. He now tells the truth about germn cars.
Check your oil consumption, most people don't...the B58 is really overrated with plastic oil pump parts and nowhere near as robust as the S58
That first BMW was a beauty. Too bad it's crap.
It is a great looking car indeed
Man that’s too bad about that m850 because that is one Beautiful car !! Never seen one
We appreciate these RUclips videos! Sadly, what they were is no longer. Thumbs up!
Thank you
I had a 750li which was a money pit! Excellent design on the exterior, engine was trash!
3. Diy. They fix things themselves and they omit the problems as problems
4. Leasers. They dont keep the car long enough to know its reliability
I own a W211 E55 (110,000 miles) and a 2001 W210 E430 (156,000miles) as my daily and I couldn’t agree more!
What do you think about engines for C250, C300 from 2009-2014
How about W124 ??? E220...n e320
I have a N63TU and the only issues I really have is keeping my foot off the gas so much lol but I give religiously oil changes every 5K miles and I’ve done a brake flush new rotors and pads engine air filter and cabin air filter and it has 93K miles on it going strong
What year and model ?I have 2013 650 i and I’m seriously thinking of selling it cause of these problems I’m hearing!

haven't mentioned for a while but my sister's vw hybrid this june, apparently! 😂
I’m thinking about getting a 2018 E-300 are they reliable? I heard good things
Not bad, but a little fragile and those engines have had a few concerns as shown in forums. With that said, I would.
Great video
I love it
My best wishes always from Las Vegas Craig
20 stars for this video out of 5
Bravo 👏🏻
Shoutout to Las Vegas Craig.
This is why I stay with my lexus. No it does not have the driving dynamics of the Germans, but It is rock solid reliable and I spend very little to maintain it.
Hello Mark what is your view or take on Volvos. I was thinking of purchasing. Either a S60 or S90 model?
Thank You
All the cars you've shown are disposable. I was told rent a euro, thrash $h!t out of it, then return it. rent another one, thrash it, return it. rinse and repeat.
I definitely agree with this however in my experience BMW has good customer support. Could you make a video on customer experience for different brands?
Great suggestion!
I once rented a 2016 M6 grand coupe and a warning light (low oil) came on and I had to scramble before the auto part store before it closes to buy oil.
That seems to happen frequently in some engines
The point is, get what you can “AFFORD”
Perhaps with the BMW Big Daddy you could modify the hood for air intake and wrap everything around the turbos? The whole thing sounds crazy. B. Urn M.y W.allet.
Wrapping the turbos/downpipes and updating cooling is my solution
if the heat is to much for the plastic why does it take so long to cayse problems? Shouldnt the plastic melt in several hours? Makes no sense
hahaha love; I liked the analogy of mike tyson...yeah you're right; even my E92 328i 6MT gives me trouble at times (it is been highly reliable), I can image an N54
Right on, lol.
This guy is entertaining and informative at the same time:) 😂😂😂
Those beauties look fantastic, but peel back the layers and you find a German horror story , a money succubus, I can imagine that the scrap yards are full of these cars because it gets to the point where it costs more to fix these cars than what they're worth , get rid of these money pits , unless you like wasting money , but I'm hearing the BMW ev is opening some eyes
Lexus is the Answer
This makes me think of the Lexus RX V6 engine. Lexus IS not pretty and luxurious like Mercedes and BMW but I really need a reliable engine.
It might be shorter to simply list the only engine/gens that are worth considering. M57s with a "delete" are good, B58 seems promising . . . apart from that the pickings are slim. The pre N54 non-turbo six cylinder engines were pretty reliable.
B48, b58 are good.
Yes
B58 has a history of oil consumption, S58 seems decent so far
@@fzr1000981 oil consumption? Ive seen reports of disintegrating oil filters from 10k intervals, but not any oil consumption
@@rayaany.4069 research the topic, quite a few reports on it and most owners don't change their own oil so they never know...supposedly improved in recent years but it's not an S58

What about the 2018 GLS 450 ? The X166.
you dont need luxury cars to have all these issue, I have a 2011 Peugeot 308 with the Prince turbo engine (BMW N14), it has all these problems, combined
Thank You for sharing your amazing amount of knowledge about cars. You know your stuff !🌞
I’m staying away from direct injection only engines. MPI or dual injection for me, turbocharged engines are questionable.
Dual injection systems are great like in Toyotas, Lexus and even Lamborghini
As a current Lexus GS owner; I'm looking at trading for a BMW 540i (2017-2020). Considering that the B58 motor is one of the most reliable engines from BMW, do you believe this is a good trade?
Like Mark any mechanic will tell you that. BMW's are mostly plastic. Even under the hood. Plastic is a week material. It also dries out and becomes very brittle. Faster so under the engine hood. Making all of these components. Something the mechanic worries about both initially breaking. As well as additionally breaking.
Bad trade in would stick to lexus
@ValleyoftheSun For myself I would purchase the 2022 or 2023 Lexus 300H.
Basic 3series with na v6 is the only decent reliable bmw. The rests are pos.
Cheer
Very informative video, thank you
My S63 w M156 engine...no problem whatsoever, still running like new!
Year?
For sure
Nice Honda Civic parked next to that ticking time bomb 💣
AMG hot V doesn't have these problems 🤷♂️ bmw👎
Couple days ago I sold f30 2013 with 331000 km , without any major problems since i bought (was 160k km) 🤨
Americans and Canadians can be happy about not getting any French cars. Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and DS are the biggest shitboxes in the world...
Some of the French diesels aren't bad, they can do huge mileages.
I burst in laughter when i heard V6 Turbo for that S4 😂 ! Any car guy know it’s a Supercharged engine !
Some really good points indeed
I have had toyotas for the last 20 years and change oil every 10K miles with full systhetic. No issues. Camry hybrid 185K miles, highlander hybrid 190K, current 2012 sienna 130K miles prius, 1995 T100 200K miles, no issues, current 2018 highlander hybrid 70K miles, no issues.
