I have also loved that world, but the fact is either being a strong DIYer with many great tools or a very deep set of pockets, lol. Thank you so much for the support. Cheers
I knew you were going to pick a 7 series. However, what if you’re a person who buys the deprecated vehicle at a great deal? I recently paid $45k for a 2019 BMW 740xi long version with the B58 engine, a $95k MSRP. It was CPO until August 2024. I paid $6k to extend the CPO wrapper warranty out to August 2016. That over 4 years without worries and the car will still sell for over $30k in 4 years, so I can recoup much of my original purchase price, but I do plan on keeping. You need to mention to let the dealer take the hit on the Lease, then purchase.
Yes that’s a great buy on a wonderful car. The V8 engines get to be a mess after a few years but that B58 is the heart and should be solid for a bunch of years. Overall a great buy.

Your channel sure helps that aspect of vehicle shopping. We have a 2021 Subaru Outback XT with the new 2.4L Boxer Turbo engine and really love it. Subaru’s Symmetrical All Wheel Drive is one of the best, and apart from me not being the biggest fan of CVT’s, Subaru makes their own and it’s one of the better CVT’s out there. The engine is the gem, though. Smooth & quiet with power to spare. Thanks again for all you do. Great videos! Happy New Year from Winnipeg 🎉👋👍
Great video man. Range Rovers have become unreliable, wouldn't venture very far from the city with that car. And BMW, my my, they have been riding the downward slope for some time now. There are early eighties 2002's still buzzing around, that's when BMW still knew how to make reliable cars.
I tend to wait until something I like hits rock bottom then buy just before they start to appreciate. That softens the blow of maintenance. I just bought a high spec 6 cyl 2007 BMW E92 coupe for £2500 with just 95k and regular oil changes. It also helps when your cousin is a BMW senior technician 😉
Good video! Honestly, for me car depreciation rate is one of my last thoughts. I love cars and spend a lot of time in them for work. Of course I know cars depreciate in value and some more than others, but I'd rather spend money on a car I LOVE than half of that on a car I don't that's more "reliable" and "depreciates less".
Hey Mark, Can you please advise on at what point do you decide to sell a car that is costing you too much to maintain? Because your always hoping “this will be the last fix” and it just digs you deeper and deeper in cost
Well done and spot on! Let the wealthy take the hit. My neighbor buys used Mercedes all the time for his family. They buy mid to higher end models when they are down to $10-20k range and drive them for years, til they break or get wrecked. They don't end up having to spend a ton on them either. Meanwhile drive beautiful roadworthy, safe cars for not big money. The other side, is like what I did buying a 2008 Jag XJ 2 yrs old for just over 1/2 the sticker price , in 2010, with a terrific warranty. Still have it!
Haven’t watched this yet but I can predict anything German (except Porsche), especially BMW !! I’ve said this before many times, they’re empty money pits after 50k miles and/or 5 years old. I’ll watch later to see if my prediction is correct
Thanks for this video. Very helpful for the guy trying to buy a great car but doesn’t have much knowledge about the actual quality or ability to maintain value over time. You seem to defer to Lexus a lot as an alternative. Do they just make a great product across the board, in your opinion?
Of all the cars on your list my soft spot is the Jag n I bought one in the mid 60s a very old one by them days standards as they used to rust n deteriorate a lot more than today, everything was horrendously expensive from the fuel consumption to parts n maintenance in the end I learned a very valuable lesson n never bought another expensive car unless you are a high end earner its really totally mad to buy a car like that But it was Brilliant to drive
I can't argue that AR stelvios depreciate. I bought an 18' stelvio ti sport. Never regretted it. The only thing I regret is buying an extended warranty. Which I haven't used and signs point to won't ever need to use it. I have 60k miles on it, haven't spent a dime. Dealership is top notch customer service. Got with 30k miles on it. Previous owner had no problems. It is not only solid as a rock, I feel it is more reliable than my forester 16'. Thanks for noticing the depreciation. Also thank you for not joining on the bandwagon which is knocking alfa romeo through 1985 lenses. I didn't see anything bad in the first 60k miles. Please don't knock alfa romeos reliability. Everyone knocks it, 0 of those people have put considerable miles on a AR car. I challenge you to get a ti sport or qv. I wouldn't buy one new. I would get one used, just like you and I would.
The dealer lent it to me for a long term review so I did not have it for very long but it was flawless and I loved it. The only issue I had was a tire pressure sensor. Those cars can have carbon buildup and the infamous crank hub, but otherwise they are fairly solid. With higher miles I know coolant leaks and oil leaks may happen, but stay on top of that and you will be fine. Still one of the best true driver cars in this price point.
Alfa Romeo have very weird quality control issues. I sat in a newer gen of Giulia and the dashboard literally rattled and the glove box fell off at first try of opening it at car presentation from Alfa Romeo
Italian cars have always been very hit or miss in that way. Why anyone would want an Italian SUV though is beyond me. If I was going to buy any Alfa, it would be the 4C Spider.
I always buy the end of the model run BMW Series. My favorite is the one year old loaner cars. First the new model is coming out…discount. Second, BMW has worked out all the issues on that model run. It’s typically loaded, I prefer non M models bc the tires are all the same size and they’re not too low…curb rash. My latest 2016 535i has 70k miles with zero issues. Rides like a freight train down the interstate, has ride control when you want to get frisky. Love the good looks and driving pleasure. Worth every penny.
These cars you show are really nice though. I do agree with this list and I appreciate your time in these videos however mentioning Lexus and Acura a lot for alternatives while these brands good in terms of resale and known for longevity they are so boring and uninspiring it can make you sick. I’d buy a Mazda over those two brands. Also people who are buying these cars really don’t care about resale value too much. I bought an Alfa Romeo Stelvio because I like it and it fits my personality regardless of the cost of owning it. People should realize that if they can’t handle the resale value or if they are on any kind of budget or have any kind of debt they shouldn’t own cars like these anyway.
Hey Mark I’m confused, I want to buy my first fast car, don’t wanna over extend, want something in the 40k to 50k range used, preferably V6 or V8. Don’t want a money pit as I know I won’t be driving it much. What would you suggest? How about Nissan 370? I’m not a car guy so would love to hear your advice ❤ Based here in hamilton Ontario
In that range I would buy a manual V8 Camaro or Mustang as they are fun and manual is interesting and while they are not as reliable as a Lexus, they are reasonable
A shame about the Range Rover. Elegant car. The inexpensive resale cost, even at 3 years, is a red flag. I'll stick with a Toyota 4Runner. Same with the BMW. I've been looking at the Jaguar F type more. The F type R is holding value, when, arguably The four and six-cylinder models are not. 911s are ridiculous. Good video Mark!
Thanks Thomas. Yes the 4Runner is a great reliable rig and worth driving a long time. The 911s are getting silly but it seems more at the lower cost cars. It seems the newer ones are closer to where the prices should be but 996 and 997 cars were getting silly this year. I did notice even my F Type took a big hit and I got a great deal as a result since I bought it a couple years old. New was 130 and I bought for about 75 CAN. Now prices are holding well so the future may say something else but it seems like the sweet spot is an R or SVR and getting it at about 2-3 years old and buy the extended warranty for piece of mind.
@@ECPP I agree with those observations. Thoughts on the six cylinder supercharged? That's about the price point I have. The R type is still a bit high if I want anything within 3 years.
basically any MERC BMW AUDI VW RANGE ROVER .avoid all the above and you'll be ok lol. buy any old crap as a daily driver and have a special car for summer. we have a nissan leaf as our daily and i have gen6 camaro ss summer car.
For sure great approach. A special car is great for those nice evening drives or those special events but the grind is better suited with a beater such as an older truck.
"You throw a 100k at something and may only have 20-30k left after 5 years!!" That's the Canadian dream Mark, didn't you know? Canadian's love to take on massive debt, trade in their cars after 2-3 years while still owing thousands on existing car loans. It's all about keeping up with the Joneses.
Haha, for sure, for sure, for sure, upside down on loans is pretty common these days. The next shiny thing is what people get attracted to and they drop the last.
How do you recommend Mazda series 3 (2021-22 )for a 22 year old guy who needs his first car and prefers quality materials over performance and is on a budget?
Cars are not "investments" like property or stocks for the most part unless you are buying a collectors car. Yup there are a lot of lemons out there but my Honda crv had for 11 years at 125k miles and the bottom is rusted out so you never know what your going to get even with a so-called great low cost good value brand like Honda. Looking to step into entry BMW x1 and will probably get extended warranty and hope to keep 6-8+ years with minimal costs and just enjoy it for what it's worth. Not everything is a trade off of what is the most value I can squeeze out of something as opposed to just "living and enjoying"(if you can afford it). I do agree with the cars on these reviews that they are bad so keep up good work - if I do go the route of new x1 please review but looking to get that 6-8 years plus out of it. Thx
ALL vehicles are nothing more than depreciating liabilities! That said, purchase a 5 - 10-year-old Toyota Corolla, pay cash! The money you save in repairs and depreciation will allow you to retire early!
When I see 25 yr olds working at fast food restaurants and warehouses buying or driving a used 7 yr old Mercedes/Audi/BMW with 70-160 miles on the dash, I laugh because they have no idea what’s in store as the vehicle starts breaking down out of warranty and the payments are stretched for 6-8 yrs with crazy interest rates but low monthly payments knowing they’ll end up getting repossessed and the drivers with bad credit dodging collection calls.
I see you're in Western Canada. Don't you think you should differentiate between warm weather areas and cold weather ones. I live in California and drive Audi A8's and have had several Lexus cars through the years without any problems. My cousin who lives in Edmonton, Alberta had to replace the water pump on his Lexus at 80,000 miles. Unheard of in California. And don't get me going on electric vehicles and cold weather.
We keep our vehicles for 12-18 or more years. As long as they stay reliable, we keep driving them. The money we’ve saved by Not buying a new vehicle every year, we’ve invested into real estate / rental properties.
great video, Japanese cars usually hold a better value and I know they are not fancy like the ones in the video, I am selling my Mazda 3 I got in 2018 for 32K in Canada for 25k in 2 weeks :)
I wish that either the Japanese car companies would hire German designers or the German car companies would hire the Japanese manufacturing engineers and quality control team.
It seems that the main problem with these manufacturers is that they are unable to create a reliable engine and transmission. Maybe the simplicity of an all EV car will improve their reliability in the future, since they are pretty good at creating beautiful car bodies and interiors?
All vehicles depreciate unless it's exotic supercar and even some of those depreciate. If you don't want to lose a lot of money from depreciation don't buy a luxury vehicle.
@@mikefoehr235 Goody Goody for you... Not everybody wants a Toyota. A 2020 Toyota Tacoma is worth 63.5% of it's original value after five years and 60k miles. They depreciate more slowly than a lot of other vehicles but they still depreciate. The only reason car sell at or above MSRP it's because of the current shortages of new and used cars. When the market stabilizes a lot of used cars are going to drop like a bomb including Toyota.
@@williamegler8771 Is that right. Weird that the brand sells the most on the planet...dead heat with VW. I Understand it's hard for you because you are an @$$whole
When you're buying a high end vehicle, the depreciation is something you have to be willing and able to simply live with, realizing that it's the cost of doing business and having your dream machine. If you're worried about trade in values on cars like these you're shopping in the wrong price bracket.
These cars are all hat and no cattle , imagine buying one of these beauties and it gets totaled on the way home , unless you have the proper insurance your still going to owe on it and the biggest scam in car selling history is how cars depreciate as soon as you drive it off the lot , hey i like how Toyota changed the look of the prius and upped the engine hp , I don't live in Buffalo but 3 hrs away, some areas got 70 inches of snow , the bills are supposed to play in Detroit, If they got out in time , thanks for the info, I hate throwing money away
Thanks for sharing Phil, I agree, I don’t like throwing cash away either, if I feel the value is not there . For fun Saturday night drives warrants a soeci car and that’s an investment for my mental health. Otherwise dailies should be low impact, lol. Yes quite the snow down east right now. Stay warm
🤣 Audi is such a endless moneypit, years ago my friend bought a brand new Audi A8L,spent over 90K & it broke down so many times in 4 years including the audio head unit ,suspension issues ,multiple module failures, airbag recalls ,he got tired of that he gave it to me for free , I promptly sold it & it got exported to Albania .....wanted nothing to do with this moneypit, still got a extra new driver's side airbag for it
Is all about economy. If you can afford to buy luxury cars every 4 years you don't think too much about depreciation. On the other hand, if your income is too tight, you will get a toyota for the next 13 years or maybe more time. Some people just lease a mercedes for 2 or 3 years.
Lmao I got so offended when you insulted my Qx80 then I realized I bought the limited top of the line one for under 25k used last June, so yeah they don’t hold value but they’re reliable and I think they are nice, the interior is nicer than my co workers Navigator
@@isaachunt5799 Lets say it like this though: In Germany no one buys an S-Class. Its rather an company financed vehicle with tax advantages or a leasing vehicle with tax advantages. After about 30k km on the mileage the car goes back to the dealer and has a rest value of about 50-70% of msrp.
@@mikefoehr235 learned the hard way and bounced back to Japanese car but some Japanese cars aren't so good neither like mitsubishi and some Subaru Nissan as well
A Jag really! Year after year, Jaguar ranks well below the industry’s average in terms of vehicle reliability according to J.D. Power. In 2020 and 2021, it even appeared in the top three worst car brands. As for the Consumer Reports magazine they give it a predicted reliability rating of 2 out of 5. What are the problems with them? Just the transmission, the engine (including the cooling system), the brakes and the suspension. The electronics also tend to act up, especially the displays and the multimedia system. Other than that they are fine...lol And you wonder why people are giving them away on the used car market...I wouldn't walk away from a Jag...I WOULD RUN!
I was talking to someone yesterday who I know, he told me his 2010 BMW with 110,000 that he bought new and always changed the oil blew its turbo and dealer wanted $11,000 to fix. What a POS

My 4 adult boys constantly tell me the GREAT Deals on Range Rovers... I keep telling them... You buy one, Don't CRY to me, cause on those I WILL Say ..."I TOLD YOU SO!" And BMW??? Love "You name it it'll fail!" and"Two arms & 3 Legs!) LMAO!
The Alfa Romeo front grill is a throwback to the Edsel.
Haha, thanks Henry. I love making these types of videos. You are also right that there is a reason certain vehicles are affordable after warranty is gone. I have also loved that world, but the fact is either being a strong DIYer with many great tools or a very deep set of pockets, lol. Thank you so much for the support. Cheers
Absolutely LOVE the start of your vids!
Thank You for another great video ! You explain things well and you keep things moving along, this video was enjoyable, informative, and interesting . Bravo !
Thank you very much Chad, I try to bring education and some humour to the vids. Have a great weekend.
Get it, Mark. Drop that Knowledge big brother.
Thank you, will do indeed.
The used S Class, BMWs and Jaguars are good project cars if you're a trainee mechanic, you're guaranteed a long list of repairs for good experience.
Thank You! Previous 760i Loved It! Oil Leaks & Then Some! What A Nice Drive Though
You bet
When. You get oil leaks, you fix it 🤷🏾♂️ 😂 I’m just saying
@@48hourrecordsteam45 It was fixed and among other problems; However, a family w/ a young son is more important than a 760i especially a 2005. Now that I’m about to retire going for a 2017 to 2021 760li low mileage. I was looking for the 2013 Special 25th edition. I’ll just go for the updates will see in 2023.
Living in Winnipeg, I love seeing the snow in your videos. Plus I always look forward to your “catastrophic engine failure” line…..it’s truly EPIC in my books. Couldn’t agree with you more regarding these piece of crap money pits. But….unfortunately most people don’t do their homework when they spend their hard earned cash on vehicles.
You are right. BMW sort of lost their way. It seems like the most recent offerings are a little better but time will tell.
BMW reliability has gone way up recently. They are almost as good as Toyota and better than all the other Asian cars.
Those 2018 seem to be fairing well
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 That was Great
I tend to wait until something I like hits rock bottom then buy just before they start to appreciate. That softens the blow of maintenance. I just bought a high spec 6 cyl 2007 BMW E92 coupe for £2500 with just 95k and regular oil changes. It also helps when your cousin is a BMW senior technician 😉
That is a really affordable way to go indeed
True and for my daily drivers it matters a lot but for my toy Saturday hotrod, that’s the price to pay so depreciation is less of a concern
Hey Mark,
Can you please advise on at what point do you decide to sell a car that is costing you too much to maintain?
Because your always hoping “this will be the last fix” and it just digs you deeper and deeper in cost
If you have to ask, it's time to sell. Enjoy the experience of owning an Asian car, with little trouble.
Dope vid homie! Much love from Columbus Ohio
Thank you very much, hope you are having a great weekend. Thanks for the support
Great video, great advice. If anyone really wants one of these cars, they should lease, not buy.
I’ll watch later to see if my prediction is correct
correct 🤣
Haha, thanks, it’s definitely worth the watch.
@@ECPP finished watching it. Sure enough BMW was the worst car in the long run. Great video. Enjoyed it
Thanks for this video. Very helpful for the guy trying to buy a great car but doesn’t have much knowledge about the actual quality or ability to maintain value over time. You seem to defer to Lexus a lot as an alternative. Do they just make a great product across the board, in your opinion?
5:12 They love it for its Edsel-esque grille over 50 years too late.
I'm with you on that, I'll get the Acura MDX also, they look great and will last forever
Thanks
Of all the cars on your list my soft spot is the Jag n I bought one in the mid 60s a very old one by them days standards as they used to rust n deteriorate a lot more than today, everything was horrendously expensive from the fuel consumption to parts n maintenance in the end I learned a very valuable lesson n never bought another expensive car unless you are a high end earner its really totally mad to buy a car like that But it was Brilliant to drive
They are great indeed, albeit not perfect but wonderful nonethelss
Hello is the Lexus NX300h any good ?
I like it, is it reliable or do you suggest other Lexus suv over it ?
Yes fairly reliable indeed but I would personally go non hybrid. Either way, a solid vehicle.
Last month I bought a 2018 bmw m4 and I plan to keep it for life. It’s the most expensive car I have bought.
I had an M4 Competition a few years ago and it was an amazing machine. Is your DCT or manual?
@@ECPP It’s a dct. Why did you sell it and what year was yours? Was it reliable?
The dealer lent it to me for a long term review so I did not have it for very long but it was flawless and I loved it. The only issue I had was a tire pressure sensor. Those cars can have carbon buildup and the infamous crank hub, but otherwise they are fairly solid. With higher miles I know coolant leaks and oil leaks may happen, but stay on top of that and you will be fine. Still one of the best true driver cars in this price point.
Best used cars video for price. But not reliability.
If I had to choose one of these ( after they depreciate) I'd pick the Ford to drive it until the wheels fall off.
Likely be a little lower for operations costs than many of the others
Great Presentation!!!
Thank you very much
@@ECPP You’re welcome.
Alfa Romeo have very weird quality control issues. I sat in a newer gen of Giulia and the dashboard literally rattled and the glove box fell off at first try of opening it at car presentation from Alfa Romeo
Ouch. That’s awkward.
Chrysler 'quality.'
That can certainly work indeed
Thank you so much for informing and educating us
These cars you show are really nice though.
Hey Mark
I’m confused, I want to buy my first fast car, don’t wanna over extend, want something in the 40k to 50k range used, preferably V6 or V8.
Don’t want a money pit as I know I won’t be driving it much. What would you suggest?
How about Nissan 370?
I’m not a car guy so would love to hear your advice ❤
Based here in hamilton Ontario
In that range I would buy a manual V8 Camaro or Mustang as they are fun and manual is interesting and while they are not as reliable as a Lexus, they are reasonable
@@ECPP great will test drive those two, tnx Mark :)
Range Rover is also a plastic fantastic shit box w great looks
basically any
MERC
BMW
AUDI
VW
RANGE ROVER
.avoid all the above and you'll be ok lol. buy any old crap as a daily driver and have a special car for summer. we have a nissan leaf as our daily and i have gen6 camaro ss summer car.
For sure great approach. A special car is great for those nice evening drives or those special events but the grind is better suited with a beater such as an older truck.
0:32 That was wild! My soul left my body in few milliseconds.
All you can do with these looser vehicles is to trade back for another vehicle of the same kind.
I have a 13 lx570. I'll keep it forever hopefully. I'll never want a different vehicle. Absolutely the best.
I want to bye f30 330e 2017 mod with only 60000km.what about your opinon on that model petrol hybrid
Awesome
How do you recommend Mazda series 3 (2021-22 )for a 22 year old guy who needs his first car and prefers quality materials over performance and is on a budget?
I love this channel.
some cars are worse than others, but i wouldn't say losing 50% of its value is very abnormal when in normal use.
Thanks but 40 % vs 60% is a fair amount of cash and that is just compounded by high maintenance costs and repairs.
@@ECPP that's true
Years ago I bought a Toyota Tacoma base model for $16,000 I put 100,000 miles on it and sold it for 16,500 lol 😂
Thx
Yes but the front grills on Lexus are so ugly! I will never a Lexus.
Cheers
Very informative and interesting 👍
ALL vehicles are nothing more than depreciating liabilities! That said, purchase a 5 - 10-year-old Toyota Corolla, pay cash! The money you save in repairs and depreciation will allow you to retire early!
But eating cat food in a Ferrari is fun, lol.

I live in California and drive Audi A8's and have had several
Lexus cars through the years without any problems. My cousin who lives in Edmonton, Alberta had to replace the water pump on his Lexus at 80,000 miles. Unheard of in California.
And don't get me going on electric vehicles and cold weather.
Haha, that’s fair. Extreme cold does take a toll on cars.
Great video again.
Thanks again!
We keep our vehicles for 12-18 or more years. As long as they stay reliable, we keep driving them.
The money we’ve saved by Not buying a new vehicle every year, we’ve invested into real estate / rental properties.
So so expensive to fix all these modern cars and suv's its insane!
Yes
Stay clear and far away from BMW as you possibly can. Yes they are nice but they break easily and often and the cost of repair is outrageous!
Very true! Lease or short term ownership at most
What about a bmw m4 xdrive. Are they good cars do they hold their value?

Yes, yes, yes, but need a big budget for maintenance. Beautiful cars indeed
@@ECPP What seems to be the maintenance problems?!!!
great video, Japanese cars usually hold a better value and I know they are not fancy like the ones in the video, I am selling my Mazda 3 I got in 2018 for 32K in Canada for 25k in 2 weeks :)
Thank you, good video.
All vehicles depreciate unless it's exotic supercar and even some of those depreciate.
If you don't want to lose a lot of money from depreciation don't buy a luxury vehicle.
My 20 Tundra has appreciated about 20% since new. Toyota really hold their value.

When you're buying a high end vehicle, the depreciation is something you have to be willing and able to simply live with, realizing that it's the cost of doing business and having your dream machine. If you're worried about trade in values on cars like these you're shopping in the wrong price bracket.
What you think about the mercedes cla 200 sedan 2019?

These cars are all hat and no cattle , imagine buying one of these beauties and it gets totaled on the way home , unless you have the proper insurance your still going to owe on it and the biggest scam in car selling history is how cars depreciate as soon as you drive it off the lot , hey i like how Toyota changed the look of the prius and upped the engine hp , I don't live in Buffalo but 3 hrs away, some areas got 70 inches of snow , the bills are supposed to play in Detroit, If they got out in time , thanks for the info, I hate throwing money away
