- This is a tutorial on how to dye just a section of your cosplay wig. This is a painting method used with a sharpie dye solution. Don't forget to watch in HD!
Materials-
Sharpies with the color of your choice (I'm using basic red, and I got 5 so the color is intense)
70% Rubbing Alcohol
Sharp knife or scissors
Tupperware with lid (one you don't mind trashing)
Paint brush
Gloves
Something to help you get the sharpie apart (I used pliers)
Paper towels
Wig stand
Your wig!

Yup, let it dry out for a while. (I would just leave it alone for a day) and then give it a wash. Be warned that when you wash it might bleed a little (red is the worst for bleeding)
I found cracking the sharpies open with a hammer much more effective and less tedious for future reference! This video is really helpful for me, I just bought a sharpie pack and hope to get dying this week!
How did the color look on your Wig? Was you successful?
Thank you Gurl You're a life saver! Will try this technique on a honey blonde synthetic wig I bought. Didn't like the color of the wig, so it's never been worn. Glad I seen this video. Thanks again!
your video tutorial is by far the best i've seen on this topic, just ordered a kawaii pink wig from china and they sent me blonde -____- not willing to wait another 10 days to receive the correct wig so i've been searching on how to dye it myself, thank you for providing this video !!!
I used 5 for that little chunk and had plenty left over to do more sections if I wanted. I think 4 or 5 would be plenty. Just remember to let it sit for a while, or it will take more layers to get really black. :) Hope I helped!
This helped a lot! And the color you did is the exact color I need to dye my wig ^-^
THANK YOU!! Somebody finally makes a video on this!
Great Job!!! Straight To The Point... Love it!!!
Beautifully done
I really liked this and it helped me out. Thank you!
Will the color fade away and also if you go into the rain will the color drip
Helpful and you explained the process so well thank u! I kind of messed up on mine tho.. Is there some way to remove the permanent marker from the wig?? Mine is a synthetic 613
This is so helpful thank you!!
Love this video I have a question my extensions are half human and a good quality synthetic from sallys will this method work on my extensions??
If you use 70% alcohol to dye the wig, you might be able to do a rinse with 91% alcohol to remove it. This is not a guaranteed method though :)
This sounds like a fantastic tutorial! Yet I've got a question or two:
Do you need to seal it or anything by using this method?
and is the colour of this Arda wig silver?
Thank you for this tutorial! Yoy saved my life ;-;! Cause my neliel wig was toooo lighter than the original :( ! One question, do you wash it after that? Or just let it dry? Sorry for my bad english x)
This is a really good method!! But are you able to take the color off? I have a red Kagami wig but I want to add the darker red on the bottom so will I be able to wash it off or something later on?
great!! thanks! i also ordered my wig from arda and i need to make part of the blonde wig, black :P
i’m definitely going to use this method for my ibuki wig!!
Will I be able to make the hair a gradient with this method? I'm starting with a blonde wig and need the tips to fade to orange
This video helped me a lot thanks!!
Very helpful! Wont work for me cause I’m needing to work on a black wig but I LOVE IT
When applying the second layer, should the first be mostly dry beforehand? Also when washing, should it be with warm or cold water?
did you wash it out or anything? if so, how long did you leave it on the wig for before washing? also, does the colour tend to rub off on your skin/clothes etc if you wear it?
I have seen this wig that is in the style I need it to be, but the store only sells it in a vibrant green. Could dyeing it this way affect the outcome badly?
Hi :) I'm cosplay Keira Hagai from the Jak and Daxter series. Could I buy a green wig then dye the top blue? Or should I just start with a white wig?
Thanks so much for your tutorial by the way :)
It's to change colors in a sense. I need a wig that is black but has dark red undertones as well and dark red tips, and I haven't found a wig like that yet
do u wash it after n how long do u keep the color on
Should I wash it out after its dried?
Ren yes, but only with fabric softener
does it rub off onto clothes and stuff after it dries? I'm wanting to dye the ends of my wig for Harley Quinn buy can't have the color bleed
What about dying black wigs with a lighter color like say red? Would you have to bleach the areas you want or...?
Any tips on dyeing the roots of an ash blonde wig to a brown? (ie. Rose Tyler-ish)
I haven't personally used 50% but other people have and say it works just fine :)
Hey I will be dying a wig soon, but I only need to dye the ends, about the last inch.
How many sharpies would I use?
I will be dying a dark red wig -> black
How do you seal in the color and make sure it doesn't get on anything?
Does it come out when u wash it?
Also any advice for someone want to just dye the ends of a ponytail?
I’m making my own Deku wig so I only need certain sections underneath the green while it’s styled to be dyed black. should I paint it while I have it styled? If I do so would the black bleed onto the green when I rinse it?
I bought some synthetic extensions and tried darkening them very slightly (chestnut to light brown/ its was too reddish compared to my blondish brown hair) and coloured them using dylon fabric dye as a tester, but its dried them out and i doubt itll stay in if i wash them (leaves residue on my neck anjd clothes). would this work better for them being synthetic?
Did you use all red sharpies the final color looks different than I thought it would. I was wondering how you know which color to choose to make sure it's the one you want.
Can I add black highlights to a blue wig using this method & a shower cap
What do I do about it staining? I've washed it my wig twice and it still stains my hands and forehead when I wear it.
Um would it work on like a bombshell blond wig?? I bought this England hetalia wig at LightintheBox and I wanted to dye sections of it for cosplaying an oc. So do you think about like 5 sharpies of pink and 5 of purple will be ok with it?? Also should I wait for the first section to dry before starting the second??
So, if I am only doing a few 1 inch wide strands wouldn't i only need like 3 not 5 markers like you used?
would this work on a black wig? For example, if you want a wig thats black with a blue or purple shine.
After I dye it, what I have to do? Leave it to dry and then wash it?
Do you need to syle the wig before dying it? or should you dye it then style?
I'm wanting to do this on a black wig with pink streaks. Do you think it would work?
When youre done, do you also have to wash the wig or just let it dry? Because sometimes is gets a little sticky when I do this
If I have a red wig and I need to put a layer of red shading to yellow, is that possible or I need to take a white wig and dye it completly?
Hey ! Nice tutorial :) But i didn't really get the part with the rubbing alchool, because i'm french and im not sure i totally understand the part when you put it in the tuperware. Did you just put alchool ? Or did you add water with it? What kind of alchool ? Thanks and sorry for the long question haha ! :) (the rest of the video was pretty clear ! :P )
That's cool nice job
omg thank you so much ,it will help me a lot!
I'm considering doing this for a Nai wig (from Karneval) and I'm just wondering if you knew how to make it gradient in a way?
I have a light green wig, and Im dying the front of the wig yellow, will the colour come out well?
Do you need to rinse this out? I need to dye fairly large sections of a wig black and I'm worried about it rubbing off on skin/clothing.
Hi, I'm planing on dying a wig for a Galaco (Vocaloid) cosplay. The character has a red, blue, and yellow chunks of hair on the bangs but they are on a brown section of hair, should I jut normally dye it, or should I buy a bang piece and dye that?
Is there another way to seal the dye other than rinsingit off? I want to make streaky high lights so washing it off wouldn't probably be an option.
Thanks!! This helped!
Yaaay! I'm glad I could help ^^
Do you know how I would dye it if I wanted a light red but using the same sharpie?
For someone who has never done this before is it easier than it looks?
can you re-dye areas that you have already colored?
Do you rinse and or wash your wig afterwards?
Is there a way to do this in reverse? To dye a white wig, for example, all one color but leave out strands to be white?
how would it work with metallic sharpies?

Thank You for making this video! :)
Very useful ! Thank you for the video :)
would this work with black sharpies too?
dosent run when its wet does it? like with sweat and stuff?
you cant dye artificial wigs lighter.you can only make them darker.but you could get a weft of the color you need and attach it to the bottom then layer it so it appears to fade. You could sew it on or clip it like extensions.
Did you keep the paper towel pinned to the wig head as it dried? Oh, and this works on Kanekalon, right?
can you do a wig black with them and then u have to blowdry it or?
Can I make my dark brown wig black if I use a lot of sharpies?

can you just dip the strands in the mixture?
i have very light blonde wig almost Patel yellow..i wanna make it light brown ...what colour should I use

Won't the color fade away when you sweaT? aLSO, DO YOU HAVE TO WASH IT AFTER IT DRIES AND IS IT SAFE TO WASH THE WHOLE THING I MEAN WON'T THE COLOR TRAMSFER TO THE OTHER STRAND OF HAIR WHEN YOU WASH IT WITH WATER. HELPFUL VIDEO BTW.
That's perfect!!! thank you sooo much!!!
Tu me manque j'aimerai que tu viennent chez papi et mami
would this work to add markings to a plush toy??
After I'm done with the process if it's red and I'm wearing white clothes will it rub off on them, will it stain my white shirt?
Do you just let it air dry? Does the color tend to rub off on anything (clothes/skin)?
It can, but it wont look the best. If you are looking for something that will last you a couple weeks, I highly suggest Special Effects dye. I have pink in my hair right now and it's vibrant. If you want something temporary (the sharpies would probably last way longer than you wanted them to) I would like at hair dye mascara. You can streak it in your hair for a day and then it washes out when you shower. I've just heard a lot of horror stories with people doing the sharpie method on their hair.
can u use vinegar instead of rubbing alcohol?
Can I dye black hair with this method??
oh ok, well I'll try it and I'll see if it works!! ^u^ Thanks for answering!!
To add vibrancy or to change color? If it's just to add vibrancy, then yes! You can re-dye. If it's to change colors, I would be wary. The two colors combined might look muddled.
I need advice! I have a wig that is strongly blue wig (azure or cobalt blue) and I need to dye the tips yellow for the cosplay (I'm doing Sona from league of legends) and I was wondering if anyone knows if I can dye the tips yellow with enough colour, or if I can dye the tips white, then dye them yellow?
How much ink would I need for half of a 100cm long wig
