Pocahontas (Matoaka) was REAL, but her story was way more horrible!
In REAL, she got kidnapped as a teenager and visits with John Smith (who was a Tabak-Dealer) his town,
she probably stayed months or years in captivity,
she had to lern how to behave at court,
she got married with Kocoum and she got two kids,
she really saved John Smith from her father by jumping between both of them.
Somewhen she died.
This movie is highly offensive to indigenous people. The tribe she belonged to initially aided the settlers and were betrayed. She was kidnapped from her husband and child by the English. Forced to marry the Englishman, after they killed her real husband. This movie romanticized a “relationship”. Pocahontas was a child when she met Smith. She would never see her family again as she died of disease. This is a horrendous interpretation of colonization.
So excited for Atlantis!! One of my favourite movies and so underrated!
I haven't watched this movie in so long, but the message I feel is even more true today. "Look at where the path of hatred has brought us."

Despite the historical inaccuracies, Pocahontas is still my favorite princess. I'm Native American and it was and still is rare to see us represented in movies without racist stereotypes. So I look at it as a fictional story based on real people. Love it. 💖
There was a whole song calling indigenous people savages and barely even human. As an indigenous person myself who still loves the animation and some of the songs, it’s still really problematic. Representation matters, but not inaccurate representation that white washes actual events.
@@MrzPicklez I'm aware. I think it's important to include as it was how people were really viewed back then. Even now some people still have those beliefs. I'd rather not withhold the truth even if it's ugly. But I respect your opinion.
@@MrzPicklez I agree about white washing history though and that's the main problem with the movie. As long as people are aware of this I think it's okay to enjoy it as a movie alone.
Also by "without racist stereotypes" I'm referring to the overall perspective. It would be hard to tell this particular story without those but it's not being portrayed as if the English are the "good" guys and the Natives are the "bad" ones. Just to clarify.
This will always be one of my favorites 💖 it’s like how some people that don’t like Don Bluth’s Anastasia would compare it to the actual story of Anastasia and what really happened to her. It doesn’t change the fact that Anastasia is one of the most beautiful animated films ever made

“Colors of the Wind” is such an iconic song. So many people who haven’t even seen this movie know that song. In my opinion, it’s right up there with “A Whole New World” and “Circle of Life”, the other two main iconic Disney songs! 💕✨
As an adult, I actually appreciate the deleted "If I Never Knew You" more than I did Colors of the Wind. I actually think it's a better song, at least lyrically.

As much as I love Pocahontas (the movie) it makes me sad how the actual history of Pocahontas is incredibly dark
I know, the Disney movie is based on the account of the real life John Smith and was the version most people learned about. It was eventually revealed that the real John Smith liked to make up stories about his life and exaggerate the truth. I think that it was actually the release of this movie that caused such a backlash towards the popular story. We now know that John Smith was captured by a native tripe and almost executed but he was saved by a 10 year old girl named Pocahontas. He later exaggerated the truth that she was an adult that he seduced and that was the version that made it into history for a long time.

That’s pretty true of most of the Disney movies.
Have you ever read the original story of “The Little Mermaid”? I cried at the end. Definitely not a happy ending. Bittersweet at best and heartbreaking regardless.
And Pinocchio is just dark period. I don’t think anything good happens. It just goes from bad to worse.
Yeah that also probably didn’t happen, the native tribes greatly valued life and the biggest punishment would be exile, even if it did they probably wouldn’t bring a ten year old to the execution.

The real fate of the Governor/Ratcliffe was insane… everyone hated him and the Powhatan Indians exacted their revenge in a very cruel and graphic way 😳

@@3wydreamer147 He was caught and tied to a pole where the Powhatan women cut his skin off with mussel shells and threw his skin into a fire. They saved his face for last and then he was killed.
Disney has a great ability to "disnefy" truly horrible stories. Pocahontas was 14y/o and John Smith was around 40. They kidnapped her and forced her into christianity. She died in England, of polio I think, at like 19 y/o. She was never able to come back.

This film is a crystal clear letter of intent of Disney that they literally would walk over you dying mother to make a buck.
What's more is that I believe this film is based on the fictional account by Smith of these events - so Disney is essentially committing to abduction and rape apologetics by making this film the way they have.

@@oliviarogers3559 She already had a husband and a child before she married John Rolfe so it's likely it wasn't a marriage by choice or love. According to accounts by members of the Powhatan tribe she was happy but then her husband was k!lled by settlers and she was kidnapped.
@@KdeeBUBBLES444 yeah but thats an extremely common story both ways. I mean there are countless stories of settler girls and women being kidnapped and becoming part of the tribe. How did they really feel about their new lives? Does that really even matter? I mean if someone is kidnapped today and gets Stockholm syndrome and loves the kidnapper would we take their feeling into account?
Its an interesting concept to think about, really hard to judge. Overall I like this fictional story much better. It shows how communication and understand can conquer hate.
What historical facts Disney got correct: There was a native girl called Pocahontas and a white guy named John Smith on the boat. End of historical accuracy.
One thing that always amuses me about this movie is that the animal sidekicks cannot talk yet the tree can. XD

The only other historically accurate part of the movie, the quote “these white people are dangerous!”
Actually, both Smith and Pocahontas did declare that the incident in which he was to be executed by her tribe did happen, tough historians suspect this to be a fabrication, at least partially.
Also, as per the sequel, Pocahontas did eventually rename herself Rebecca and marry one John Rolfe, tough unlike the movie version, the real Pocahontas did renounce her native roots and was baptized in christianity.

The real Pocahontas was only 12 years old when she met John Smith, while saving his life, she later on married a man named John Rolfe, they had a son together named Thomas, she died at the age of 21 or 22, from an illness.
In my opinion, "Colors of the Wind" is one of the best Disney songs ever. Definitely top 2. It moves me every time I hear it.
Pocahontas has one of the best singing voices Disney has ever featured. Judy Kuhn sang for her, and I adore her voice - sweet, yet with a powerful earthiness.

Knowing the history of the actual story and how young pocahantas was and how awful.Jhon smithwas thi mocie makes me a lil uncomfortable but am i a terrible person for admiring that Disey at least tried to respect the culture enough to make Pocahantas the hero

This movie apparently is barely historically accurate at all. I do love this movie though. They tell thier own version of this story very well.with an awesome message that is still very relevant today.
It is horribly immaculate with alot of what actually happened. And it's alot more P*do like from smith (it's super messed up). Coming from a native myself, my aunt refused to even entertain the thought of her kids watching it without knowing the history behind the story. She still hates it, but I love this movie for how deep the music speaks to the soul.
Yeah to be fair the real story would not have been an animated movie lol. It's a gruesome story, like... any story about colonialism, really. There is a movie portraying the "real" story... what's its name again? It's a Terrence Malik movie.
The Disney version is a beautiful movie, a beautiful message drawn from a very tragic part of human history. But it's all totally inaccurate (I always knew even as a kid I had good reasons to hate John Smith lol)
Well the accurate version would be a middle aged man and a 14 year old, that get's taken and turned into a propper english lady and then dies a few years later of a desease... I can understand why disney did it different :D

In real life, Jamestown had already been established when Smith and Pocahontas met which is how Pocahontas could communicate with Smith (She had learned english from the settlers), the actual story of what happened between them is not very clear given that the only accounts of it came from them, according to them they were NOT romantically involved but were on friendly terms, also the whole misunderstanding between the settlers and the natives supposedly did happen, as well as Smith's capture and attempted execution, and her saving him by throwing herself in between him and Powhatan, tough some historians have proposed this may have been part of the execution ritual and she didn't actually mean to save him, or that they both concocted the story entirely to help her win the favor of the crown.
In a later, seemingly unrelated incident, Smith was indeed wounded with a firearm and had to go back to England for treatment, after which Pocahontas and Powhatan were told he had died in the way back, and after this she was forbidden from re-entering Jamestown; shortly thereafter, Pocahontas met John Rolfe, whom she married, she was baptized in Christianity and renamed Rebecca, and despite having been given several acres of land by Powhatan, the Rolfes actually lived in John's personal estate until Rebecca's passing.
Alan Menken is the composer for the OST, he's also the composer for multiple Disney movie: Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hercules, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tangled. Pocahontas "farewell" is one of my favourite score!
Now that you've seen Pocahontas I've got a pro tip:
Whatever you do, DON'T watch the sequel.

It's like comparing apples and pears to me. How can you actually compare two movies who have such completely different stories? I love both. In the end your preference decides what you like more.
I love that part in the making of the Lion King, where they state everyone wanted to be on project A "Pocahontas" and they were basically a bunch of misfits on project B and poured all their love and dedication into it, and the Lion King turned out to be the best disney movie ever. Pocahontas is lovely, but it's historically so inaccurate and borderline offensive in a lot of ways because of it.
Actually, it was producer Jeff Katzenberg who lobbied for Pocahontas to be prioritized over Lion King as he wanted to win a Best Picture Oscar (production started after Beauty and the Beast became a massive hit) so he encouraged a more dramatic shift with less focus on comedy and sidekicks that did not talk. The animators themselves preferred to work on Pocahontas over the Lion King as more funding was put on the former.

Even though this movie is historically inaccurate I appreciated it as an indigenous young girl I loved watching this movie every day when I was a kid. I loved seeing a Disney princess that looked similar to me. I just wished they didn’t use a real historic figure in Native American culture with such a tragic true story. This movie would’ve been so much better if they used all fictional characters.
I hope Disney make more indigenous focused movies. We have so few.

Brother bear, Spirit, Emperor's new groove is indigenous and well liked yes I know Spirit isn't Disney but even non Disney animated movies that have great indigenous representation. We are fine with native stories if they are respectful. If you use Twitter those ppl don't represent the whole native community of liking a cartoon movie.

@@798jeremy r/niceguys much? the ideal of "Alpha Males" are stupid, and used for misogyny often and misused because people don't actually understand what an "Alpha Male" is also why is the idea that someone has to be more "dominant" in a relationship and why are men always expected to be that if you haven't realized that a relationship is 2 people and it should be an equal playing field, if you still haven't realized that you got some growing to do, AND just because someone is considered "strong" or in a position of power doesn't make them automatically the bad guy.
The very last piece of music makes me SOB uncontrollably, I don't know why but the build up as she's running to the cliff to say her last farewell never fails to make me emotional for a good long while.
Fun fact: there is a beautiful duet song from Pocahontas and John when she sees him captive that was cut out of the movie because audiences said was 'boring', but I think It shows how deep their relationship was and I'm glad It's on RUclips to watch :^)
If I Never Knew You is my favorite song. It re-added for one of the anniversary video releases.
The opening song "The Virginia Company" is so damn catchy to me! I don't know why but when I first watched this film in its entirety, I fell in love with this first peice of the soundtrack and made sure to find out what it was before getting too far ahead in the rest of the movie.

Personally, this reaction help remind me of how good this movie actually is, even despite its historical inaccuracies. However I don't think that disliking this movie because it is historically inaccurate is a valid reason to dislike it, because it holds Disney to way too high of an expectation. But that is just me. Awesome reaction!
Heads up we aren't "indians" we're Natives/Native Americans/Indigenous. Indian is an outdated and inaccurate term. (Though many people still don't know/realize this so no worries)

Oh that's interesting, I didn't know that many people didn't know that, in Europe at least we learn it young ,the why they would call them like that ( that and a lot of the horrible things they did ). I don't know how it is in other countries tho.
Thank you for you information. I didn’t know that. In my country,we have the specific name which means ‘Red Indian’ so I confused between Indians and Natives Americans when I was little.

I already did. It was sad. I hated how christians forced her to convert to christianity than respecting their beliefs. I CAN RELATE TO HER BUT THE DIFFERENCES IS I'LL STANDUP FOR MY BELIEFS AGAINST CHRISTIANS, BURN OR LIVE, I FOUGHT FOR IT. Anyway, Regardless I LOVE DISNEY'S POCAHONTAS as FICTION not as the real one, because it's too lovely, Disney had the BALLS to create such masterpiece I love every single parts of it. I ADMIRE POCAHONTAS FROM BOTH FICTION AND IN REAL LIFE(EXCEPT FOR THE PART WHERE SHE WAS FORCED TO CONVERT INTO CHRISTIANITY) THAT I WISHED THE REAL ONE WAS THE DISNEY ONE. I am not a big fan of the sequel because I only want DINSNEY'S POCAHONTAS AND JOHN SMITH. No Rolfe is barking.
This is one of my top 5 favorite disney movies. I know its inaccurate and controversial but I love the fact that it teaches the audience to respect the environment, animals, and other humans.

A fun fact is that Pocahontas is a real female, she was a child and her real name was Matoaka! Her story is actually tragic and very not how disney portrayed it as romance! Love the reactions, been lurking for months and I hope you keep them up ^^
I think she died of tuberculosis
She died of smallpox but it was suspected that she was poisoned as according to her son she didn’t show any symptoms the night before she died.
Fun fact: John Smith is voiced by Mel Gibson including the singing in Gold and If I Never Knew You.
About this song, it's funny because in the french version we had the original and not a translation before the DVD's version come out
And Thomas is voiced by Christian Bale. And then there's Billy Connolly as Ben.

This is one of my favorite Disney movies. The animation and music are so beautiful! My siblings and I watched this one a lot growning up

It's easier and faster to talk about how this movie *is* historically accurate than all the ways it *isnt* .
Pocahontas was the daughter of the Chief, and was involved in some way in an attempt to bridge the gap between the natives and the colonialists. It's also true that she and John Smith didn't end up together.
From the little I know, even the things that are "historically known" about her story are only known from accounts by the white people (and mostly males) of the times. They had motives to give Pocahontas' story a narrative saying "we saved this girl from life as savage, and proved that the Savages can be cultured", while actually it's far more likely they kidnapped her to hold hostage.
All in all, probably a good thing Disney didn't choose to showcase THAT in a kids film, and went for a positive message instead...
@@seaofgeese Oh, Disney in the 90's could do dark like nobody's business, and Hunchback is top example for that (also, Hi there, I'm still getting over Mufasa).
But just like how in Hunchback they never explicitly blame the minorities' persecution on the Church, in Pocahontas they didn't fully "expose" the colonialists for how they treated the natives (and vice-versa. As mentioned, it is a kid's movie).
They gave up the historical complexities for a unified message of "accept those who are different form you".
And while I do understand and support this choice (cause the movie is great on many levels) I do wish it came with some sort of a disclaimer about creative freedoms taken, similar to the one at the beginning of Prince of Egypt
She was 13 and John Smith made his end of things up for braggibg rights. When she married John rowlfe and was inducted to high society (also the first indigenous person to be baptised into the church of England) she was Very unipressed when she met John Smith again. She had one son before succumbing to disease. She is buried in gravesend, UK and there is a statue there and stained glass windows depicting her baptism in the church. I've been there! Also her sons descendants are high powered folks in England today.

@@almag4571 In every single making-of, featurette or art book concerning this film, it is clearly mentioned that it’s largely based on folklore and legend surrounding Pocahontas.
Okay, I'm gonna be honest.Your reaction on disney movies are my favorite compare to most of the others channels.I love the way you have this Wonder in your eyes when you watch those movies. It doesn't give the vibe that you react just for content, to me its more that you want to share the beauty you find in those stories, songs and animation so thank you for sharing with us those reaction
It's a very beautiful movie but it is far from historically accurate
It could've been its own thing honestly. There was no real reason it had to be 'Pocahontas'.
Couldn't have said it better myself. As a piece of art in the form of a film, it is gorgeous, with a stellar soundtrack to boot. But as a depiction of history it is definitely not accurate.

@@livvworm This version was actually the most popular version of the story before the film was released and it was only after the film released that the true story became widespread. It is a shame that the official record was taken from John Smith, who was known to exaggerate.
Also the use of widespread use of pox blankets is a lie, no one knew what germs were back then so the whole idea is laughable. There was a small pox outbreak in 1763, but there is no solid evidence of where it came from.

This is my favorite Disney “princess” movie and one of my top favorite Disney movies of all time. Very underrated. Fun fact though, “glory, God, and gold,” the catch phrase in the first song, was actually the catch phrase for Spanish exploration of the new world, not the one for the english
I saw this film when it first premiered in theaters a million years ago lol. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful colors and great music on the big screen, and couldn’t stop getting emotional.

I forgot "If I never knew you" wasn't played in the movie. That's my second favorite song after "Colors of the wind". I definitely recommend listening to it on the soundtrack.

One scene I would have added in this movie is when Pocahontas asked her father what would his path be, and he feels the wind, the spirit of his wife appears in front of him, smiling. And they play the instrumental to "If I Never Knew You". That would have been a beautiful addition.
He even says the wind reminds him of her.
I"m glad you enjoyed Pochontas. If you thought the film was heartbreaking, watch the deleted scene featuring the song "If I Never Knew You". It really captures Pocahontas and John Smith's love and if you already loved their love story in the film, you will be in tears by the end of the scene. However it is on the 10th anniversary edition dvd, so I highly recommend checking it out.

I'm also in love with the songs and colorful scenery/cutting edge animation techniques for the time... So amazing. One of my favorite Disney films. Pocahontas is just so. Damn. Gorgeous. Up to this point, every other Princess had more of a teen girl's body, but she is curvy and athletic... Mel Gibson (voice of John Smith) even called her a babe in an interview 🤣 Her hair blowing in the wind during the scene when they meet for the first time...her pouty lips and dark, almond-shaped eyes... I love her 🥰

I mean technically, history-wise, Kocoum was actually the love of her life. They even had a son, then the white settlers kidnapped her and killed her husband. Then didn't tell her, threatening to kill him if she didn't cooperate.

Yep she was eventually forced by them to to England and lie bc people were starting to about stopping/slowing colonization bc of how many of the Native American tribes were being pillaged and killed over the years, so Pocahontas was being forced to say everything is fine. But her son did get to move back to America and find her old tribe.

I'm native descendant(dad side) and this was one of my favorite movies growing up but when you start learning more of History you realize just how much "they sweep under the rug" I mean the u.s. still barely acknowledges the residential schools in history I just wish that sometime soon we get a somewhat real representation of Native American culture (that was left to learn)
"you think you own whatever land you land on" and "you can own the earth and still, all you'll own is earth until" Those are the best, most meaningful lines of any Disney song.
Lack of historical accuracy aside, this is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. It has made SUCH an impact on me since childhood and has shaped me into the guy I am today. Pocahontas is everything I want to embody. Powerful. Selfless. Courageous. She’s the most amazing character.

I think the song "Savages" is very telling. They both look and react in hostile ways toward e/o in the beginning and you see through the colors and graphics during the music that they are really not that different.

There's a statue in England near where the real Pocahontas was buried commemorating her. Sadly the exact location of her grave is unknown as the church was destroyed by fire 100 years after she died.

This has always been one of my absolute favourite Disney movies with one of the best soundtracks imo. Unfortunately, now that I'm an adult, I understand why it has been offensive and painful to indigenous people. I do think there are positives, simply in the fact that there is an indigenous Disney princess and representation matters, and I'm sure it encourages children to empathize with indigenous people, even if the story is very different from the history.
It's a pity the characters and plot in this movie are so problematic, because it's one of my absolute favourites from childhood. The songs and the animation are just so BEAUTIFUL.
There’s nothing problematic about this movie. It is a Disney film meant to entertain not educate as a historical documentary. People project way too much onto this movie. Feel free to enjoy the movie, it’s one of my faves as well
It romanticized the colonization of America and genocide of Native Americans, and is based off John Smith’s fictional romance between himself and a woman he only met when she was 11 to get rich. You can acknowledge that a movie is problematic and still enjoy it.
David Casares there’s a ton problematic about this movie, lmao. Taking an actual person and creating an entire fictitious life for them and romanticizing it to portray your own history through rose colored glasses is problematic. The recurrent “noble savage” theme is problematic. The white savior trope is problematic. Etc. Just because something was made for entertainment doesn’t exempt it from criticism

Like... no. That is a problematic idea to show to kids. I'm not here trying to cancel Pocahontas, like I said it's one of my favourites, and thanks for your permission to watch and enjoy it, I do already do that, obviously. But like someone else said, it's possible to enjoy things without just being in denial about the issues with them.

This has always been one of my favorite Disney movies, ever since I was a wee one. There's still a picture of kid!me lying on top of my Pocahontas bedspread and wearing a Pocahontas shirt and my big wire-rimmed glasses while I read a book.
Edit: I also love it because Chief Powhatan has always reminded me of my now-late grandfather, so whenever I rewatch it, I think of him.
Edit 2: The guy who does the singing voice for Powhatan was also the main guard in Aladdin, the singing voice of Scar in The Lion King, Steele in Balto, Cortés in The Road to El Dorado, Ray in The Princess and the Frog, and the singing voice of Rasputin in Anastasia, among many others.
Excited for Atlantis! Treasure Planet, Tarzan and Atlantis are my favorite Disney films next to Cinderella and Mulan. That scene in Mulan where she prepares herself to leave her family, absolute chills! It’s a beautifully done scene.

This is my second favorite Disney movie second to Beauty and the Beast. It was the first movie I watched as a kid that felt like an adult story. I respect the real history and story of Pocahontas immensely but I also love this movie.

Fun fact: I did an entire term paper last year for my Feminism in Theatre class! I did it about whether or not there was a "true version" of Pocantus's story. The short answer is no, her tribe had no writing system, so everything we know about her comes from white men. There are lots of people who sugar-coat her very sad story, like the fact that the English colonists captured her, while she had just given birth to Kocuwam's child, and dragged her to their ship. They wanted to use her as leverage against her Dad, so they kept her on board their ship. Where she was rapped by their crewmen, including John Rolf, who she later marries when the English let her go. She didn't do it because she loved him fyi (John Rolf was such a scumbag, don't get me started!). Most people think she got Stockholm syndrome while she was staying on their ship, and that is why she agreed to marry him. That, and she was pregnant with what MAY have been John Rolf's child. Yeah, her story just gets worse and worse in real life.... poor Pochantus!
I watched this the first time when very young, the score stuck with me for years until I watched it again as an adult and without realizing it hummed along.

This movie was my STUFF as a kid. It still is. It's one of the reasons I've always been so interested in learning about indigenous cultures.
Still sad that during the section of the movie, where Pocahontas visits John in the tent whilst he's tied up, that there was going to be another epic song and they cut it from the movie, it's called "If I never knew you", it's super good and I recommend listening to it!

It's great as just a movie, but the real history is devastating. Her real name was Matoaka, she was a child when the colonizers came, she was taken and raped by them, then forcefully taken back to Europe, converted to Christianity, shown off around Europe as an example of a "savage made civilized", and dead at 22 or 23.
Didn't she marry John Rolfe and have children with him? And after she died he returned to Virginia and never saw his children again?

And before she ever got taken from VA, she had been married to Kocoum and had a baby with him, so they really tore her away from a whole family to take her to Europe and make her marry an old white man
Yes I definitely read it somewhere! When she died he did one back to Virginia. And yes! I read about kocuom to! Such a shame they turned him into some jealous guy who pocahontas rejected in the film when she was actually married to him!
Right off the bat, it's nice to see someone who enjoys the opening song as much as I do. I often find it tends to get a lot of mixed reactions. I think some people hate it because it provides incorrect information... all while ignoring the fact that this film isn't trying to be a legit history lesson. (Something history buffs always do when watching these types of films) while others seem to find it boring by Menken standards.

Its a beautiful film and has was one of the films that set the standard for disney musical prowess, unfortunately its marred simply due to the subject matter and way its ultimately handled. I wont expand on it too much as there are many many papers and posts about it but ultimately its about how it shows a distorted version of history that gives a white saviour vibe and tries to somewhat dismiss the atrocities committed during the times :( As is the way with many disney films its best to enjoy it as a separate fantasy world and divorce it from any real reality :<

Fun little fact: At the end Pocahontas gives John bark from the willow tree as a pain killer, Willow bark is actually where the chemical used in aspirin was first discovered :)
A few years ago, I sold a guitar to the director of this movie. I got to fanboy to him on his work on Zootopia. Really nice guy and even offered to give me a studio tour at Disney if I found myself in the area.
