  • Officer William Kasberg, has been with the San Antonio Police Department for over 20 years and is one of the co-creators of the SAPD Mental Health Unit.
    In this 4-part video series, Officer Kasberg presents “Law Enforcement and People with Mental Illness: Trends, Innovation and Policy.”
    The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) approach to interaction with people with mental illness has been hailed as a national model. The video series presents innovative trends in law enforcement regarding people with mental illness. Viewers will also learn about the function of the SAPD Mental Health Unit and gain a better understanding of the Mobile Partners Action Care Team (IMPACT), SAPD's initiative with the homeless.
    Part 1 presents an overview and a video clip about the SAPD Mental Health Unit in a film called "The Common Good."

    Thanks so much for this video series. The Canadian city I live in has PACT (Police and Crisis Team), and officers can call the team in the event of a mental health crisis after pulling over a vehicle to ticket a driver who is mentally ill; however, officers need to learn to identify the individuals who are suicidal and ill. People who have Major Depression illness can be delusional and paranoid. It's not just individuals who have an illness like Bipolar, Schizophrenia, and Schizoaffective disorder who have paranoia and other unusual symptoms. Many mentally ill people have impulse control issues. Ample training is needed to keep mentally ill people alive.

    If all cops had this training the world wouldn't be were it is. I got mental problems and would never call for help because they ain't there to help just to put you in jail or shoot you. Hope they train the cops better
