This piece is a happy sob, a phone call from your lover across the country whom you haven't seen in months and yet there's a lingering sorrow: the lurking goodbye in each-other's tone while minutes tick by and it seems neither of you can forget that you are far off and so lonely. It is love strangled by distance.

The first version I heard that actually has consistent dynamics that allow Kreisler's melody to be heard as intended. People tend to to overemphasize all the notes Rachmaninoff wrote as pure "decoration" so that the actual melody drowns in a sea of inconsistent dynamics.

Step 1: Try to find someone that knows anything about piano. Otherwise, use the internet to look up sheet music and how it works
Step 2: With the help of some RUclips videos, learn to play the Kreisler only version (NOT the Rachmaninoff version). Even use the MIDI visualizer videos to learn it if you have to.

Damn this is the best rendition I've ever heard from this song! Not too ~feely~ yet not too rigid. I can tell this is played by the bottom of the pianist's heart

This piece somehow manages to give you the feeling of calm and sorrow at the same time, it is like when you see your lover, and the he/she have to go to another place for a couple weeks/months and you feel sad because you won't get to see she/he as you want, but in the end you just know that she or he will come back to you and accept it

The ultimate sorrow is not that simply she doesn't love you. The ultimate sorrow love is that you're in love with her, having beautiful and joyful love story as you can hear in the melody, but also the PAUSE from time to time in the melody let you realize this love cannot last long: it's ephemeral. (This can be caused by War, disease or other factors. We all know Rachmaninoff played this in 1920..) Now the sorrow starts to spread, the joy and suffering starts fighting inside you through the entire melody.
Also the use of "love's sorrow" in the last episode of anime "You lie in April" perfectly shows the same sorrow as well: a love which is ephemeral. Kaori Miyazono basically knows she cannot live long in the first episode, but she hide the facts to her classmates. She is always smiling and encouraging. And she told Kousei Arima she'll always supporting him. She LIED, actually she lied more than 10 times (with kindness) in the anime, and finally and sadly she passed away in the last episode. This is why the anime is called "You lied in April", and the use of Love's sorrow is perfect here.
PS. I always recommend listening Lugansky and Rachmaninoff himself's interpretation as well, which are amazing as well.

    Tiffany, you are the greatest!
Love your delicacy and obvious comfort with the Rachmaninov counterpoint that require the ultimate technique.
Damn, that Rach was such a great pianist! Most of his music is a gargantuan task for those good, but not great pianists.
I am 83 years old and I got hooked on classical piano with the corny "Prelude in C# minor" which I found at age 12 both playable and comfortable and the rest is history...
Ah, Kreisler! Cannot count the number of melodies he composed that became part of music history. Genius is from heaven!

I don't know why but evey time Tiffny plays a piece, it just has a different feel compared to other pianists....to my ears it has something to do with how she plays really soft but still..audiuble her expressions are just right it's just heavenly to listen and hear her play🥺💖🙏
