Plz take the electrical tape off. It would have been fine with the thermal pad. You did great up until that point. The jankiness went to an unacceptable level. why would you wrap it in electrical tape? Like I can understand maybe wanting to wrap the battery with electrical tape....You're just trapping the heat in the ssd.
One interesting thing to see would be the SSD thermals, of the old one vs the new one. Should be able to see that easily with Crystal Disk Info. I'm a bit concerned for the electrical tape completely covering the thermal pads and may act as an insulator trapping the heat, but if the temps read fine then shouldn't be an issue
Yeah I had the same concern, I might go back and cut the sides of the tape atleast. Just didn’t want to short anything out - but it looks like it’s in the clear on the sides.
I used the same P3 Plus 2 GB model and it has been running fine. Also tested and compare with thermal and the temperature is the same with the old drive. I would not say don't use electrical tape to tape over as the thermal pad won't do anything unless there is a heatsink. From what I understand the label sticker on SSD already spread the heat. Adding electrical tape on top of thermal pad would make the SSD getting a heatstroke. I used Kapton tape to tape over some SMD components at the edge of the SSD just so that I'm on the safe side.
@cppctek if done right this isn't really a need to worry or a issue, I've gotten Temps on my ram between 50-55c under load with my SSD under 65c after doing this mod. In idle ram is between 35c-37c with SSD around 39-43c.
Maybe that is why mine is throwing a tempertaure alarm on crystal mark. as the postie broke the arm off my right angle adaptor that secures the SSD with a screw. So I wrapped insulating tape around it to hold it in place rather than send the adaptor back just to have another postie snap it lol. Btw Postie is Postman in UK.
There's a new right angle converter you can get now that can allow for "less" jank with full sized NVME SSDs. Not sure how widely available it is but it's pretty accessible for me to get in Taiwan.
That thermal pad isn't doing anything for that NVME aside from being a little buffer between the tape and the SSD. I don't know if there is any way of removing the screw down for the stock SSD but if that could be removed you could use a pair of the 1mm thin copper heat syncs and ultra thin thermal double sided tape to hold them to the drive. Cover the bottom one in Kapton to insulate it from the board on bottom and you may have a decent heat sync.
Thanks for watching! Again, please for the love of god don’t do this (even though the comments section has proven that many of y'all have already done it haha)
I saw something about this I cant remember where. But they said something about the power going to the ssd not being compatible with anything bigger than a 2230.
No idea but I haven't had any issues with power, slowdown, speed decrease or degradation, nor high Temps across the board since doing this mod with my P3 Plus Gen4 4TB SSD, speeds reach over 5000MB/3800MB
I run mine at 25 watts across the board in turbo plugged in my temps 67°c. The fan curve is slightly higher so it's a little noisy like my the steam deck but, we have to bc of the placement of the SD slot it gets really warm. Game performance is not bad at all playing open world games like Mafia 3 high 60fps at high settings 1080p and, Final Fantasy remake as well running really good frames with decent frame pacing.
Man, I am more concerned about the way you use the knife than bricking your device. Please slice away from you and not toward you next time. 😀 Good job on the mod. I'll be doing this mod, too. I'll use kapton tape instead of electrical tape.
I just did the mod yesterday. The right battery metal frame sitting on the side of the ssd is a bit sketchy. I did put in a thermal pad on the top and kapton tape on the bottom so it kinda is ok? Also there is a small bulge on the back case. It's nice having 4Tb on the Ally but I may change to a 2Tb 2230 🤞
Why not try a Gen 3 NVMe? Go especially with the SK hynix Gold P31 SSD which requires way less power / heat for portables. It's a decent performer too to stretch the battery life.
I'm going to try this with a Samsung SM961A which is an oem version on the 960 Pro. They're fantastic, 40 bucks for a 1tb, and it's an MLC drive that will last forever, and is even more important since the heat is an issue here.
@@MoswenMedia somebody made a right angle adapter to insert the ssd without any cutting of the case. it's on that official rog mods site that I can't remember.
it's a shame that asus and steam put 2230 instead of 2280 I mean there are other pc handhelds that uses 2280 without problem. I hope in a next gen it can support both or at least the 2230 could get cheaper

Bro how much tape i put a little on to secure it co's my right angle adptor had the arm that secures the SSD snapped by postaman. But not that much and mine got too hot.
I know this is stupid since you can just buy Asus’s xg mobile eGPU but for the sake of science would you do a pci-e to egpu setup like some people did for the steam deck but on the ROG Ally. I think that would be cool especially since it’s a cheaper solution
This actually looks like a very real solution. Maybe a small wedge at the bottom of ssd to keep it from backing out enough to short the pins? Maybe a paper like barrier under and on the sides of ssd similar to what’s covering factory ssd.
What's the speed on that Port? Can it support a NON ASUS External GPU? I believe some GFX Cards can plug into that port. Running a ribbon out the back and the GPU will have its own psu. Thoughts?
I was the first to document doing this day one of the Ally being released and I can confirm my system is still going strong. I went with a low power 4tb gen 4 ssd which is more than fast enough for anything I can put at it. No cuts need to be made and just using needle nose pliers will work for removing the plastic and keeping it clean . Any plastic under the drive can go and a bit from the back has to go . I will say I don’t recommend using a knife to cut anything , just go with the needle nose. Also a thermal bad is enough and the tape will not help you at all. My temps don’t get any higher than 49c which is great. Go with a custom iso of windows 11 from ghost and you’ll be up and running in about 5 to 10 min.
Hey man. Loved your video. I don't have an ally but looking forward to buying one. I've heard that since all and Z1 chips have USB 4.0, there is a probability that you can change the direction of the pcie lanes from the xg connector if not used, to another USB port to boost it up to 4.0. I haven't found proof of this in Google but I'm very curious and would like to see if I can get more info out of it. Thanks 👍

180 degrees F. How is this not hot? My I78700k and 2070 super run at 91F in my PC. I suspect this and the Steam Deck will have a short lifespan due to their temperatures!
I believe you might be mistaken. Your CPU and GPU do not run at 91F - They probably run at 91C. 91F on your electronics running at full load is improbable. 91F maybe at idle temperatures if you live in a cold climate, but under load if your computer is only getting to 91F, I'd say its broken. Even if you are in North America, all electronics display their temperatures in Celsius as the default.
Under a full load, or just sitting around on the desktop? Even the best coolers have a hard time being at 33C while playing triple A games at max settings.
The temperature should be taken from the CPU average across all cores. GPU shouldn’t really be mixed in at all to compare the two since ROG Ally uses an APU chip.

what a lie , why other handhelds have full 2280 and are totally fine , like this get hot only if u fully utilize it like benchmark over benchmark, in real ise are just fine , if asus wanted they could do this , just like the 16gb of ram , they could put 32gb but why ? since u can get taht 1000e or 2000e external gpu
Why are you acting like you’re the first to do this by saying “we will see if we can make this work” like you haven’t seen 100 other people on reddit and youtube do it first? Just be honest
I felt this in a big way since I was the first to post on Reddit about it lol I don’t care about clout but the way he was going about it was all wrong.
this it's not stupid, it's stupid that asus didn't make this happen , cut the heat issue like it's a fat lie , if heat concerns you then they are 2280 with 6-7w power like 990 pro
I can also confirm since doing this mod which was a month ago or so, Allys been running strong without any issues. Only thing I dont recommend is this; if you aren't experienced or confident enough to this or are scared you may break something, don't do this, let an experienced user do this for you or don't. Because if you succeed you aren't breaking anything other then your warranty. But if you fail then 100% will damage something for sure.
Didn’t see that, sorry. I’m definitely not the first person to do this, even in the comment section alone it seems like lots of people have been doing it and offering up suggestions
@JasonWitmerYT , looks like your wrong about the power consumption of the nvme drives. The 2230 512GB that came with the Ally uses 0.03Watts and any 2280 nvme Gen4 uses 0.08Watts respectively. The 0.08Watts covers spoeds from 3600-7600 MB/s . In theory you can install a 4TB 2280 NVME SSD and it will only use up to 0.08W. Even the old SATA AHCI interface used more wattage but only maxed out at 0.28W at its full potential of 600MB/s. This being said, congratulations to your installation success and I will be installing a 4TB 2230 nvme in my Ally. I’ll be upgrading from the 2TB that I installed already. This will give me a Total of 5TB when including my 1TB microSD *See chart below please* *Type Interface Power Consumption Speed NVMe PCIe 0.08W 3600 - 7600 MB/s SATA AHCI 0.28W 600 MB/s*

what a lie , why other handhelds have full 2280 and are totally fine , like this get hot only if u fully utilize it like benchmark over benchmark, in real ise are just fine , if asus wanted they could do this , just like the 16gb of ram , they could put 32gb but why ? since u can get taht 1000e or 2000e external gpu

Pass
Why are you acting like you’re the first to do this by saying “we will see if we can make this work” like you haven’t seen 100 other people on reddit and youtube do it first? Just be honest
I felt this in a big way since I was the first to post on Reddit about it lol I don’t care about clout but the way he was going about it was all wrong.
This is hard to watch.
this it's not stupid, it's stupid that asus didn't make this happen , cut the heat issue like it's a fat lie , if heat concerns you then they are 2280 with 6-7w power like 990 pro
This can 100% kill your ally but who cares it was fun ay
Sometimes it’s about the devices we brick along the way 🥰
Been done by many people and it runs just fine, newer m.2s have higher speeds, bigger capacity and smaller wattage.
Done this many times before with other devices and never had an issue and I’m starting to believe people just wanna act like they know something lol
This was done about a week ago on /r/ROGAlly... At least give a nod to the original >:(
Didn’t see that, sorry. I’m definitely not the first person to do this, even in the comment section alone it seems like lots of people have been doing it and offering up suggestions
Actually got the idea from the original LTT review where they said it looks like a 2280 SSD could fit in there
I hate that he saying people will died, it's not funny
This will give me a Total of 5TB when including my 1TB microSD *See chart below please*
*Type Interface Power Consumption Speed
NVMe PCIe 0.08W 3600 - 7600 MB/s
SATA AHCI 0.28W 600 MB/s*
And where do you find a 4TB 2230 SSD?
@@niklaseklov7253 As of this text, the maximum capacity of a 2230 is 2TB. There is currently no 4TB 2230 on the market anywhere on earth.
@@TheSignOfJonah I know, but you wrote in your text above: "I will be installing a 4TB 2230 nvme in my Ally."
Wut
I’m waiting for next generation of ally .rog ally with solid state cooling of frore airjet will be awesome and hopefully asus add native support to regular size m.2 along with zen 4 - 5 will be so good . Fingers crossed 🤞 . Next upgrade on 2024 -25 will be 💯 awesome and can’t wait to get my hands on it . Imagine a MacBook Pro and ally . Pretty good combo for work and gaming

Pretty ballsy. Respect 🦾
Hey you should go ahead and make an update video on the SSD and Cialis holding up and to see how if it's not heating or anything of that matter....I appreciate that man if you do that 👍😎
