  • Autonomous driving technology is exciting, to be sure. With the continually looming driver shortage and high cost of recruiting and retaining top drivers, autonomous truck driving technology could help level the fleet playing field for less experienced drivers and fleet managers alike. One of the latest leaps forward in autonomous trucking sat in the Volvo Trucks North America booth at ACT Expo this past May. The OEM pulled the curtain off of its all-new VNL integrated with its Aurora Driver, an SAE L4 autonomous driving system.
One of the biggest takeaways is: This is a production-ready autonomous truck.
Talking with Sasko Cuklev, head of on-road solutions for Volvo Autonomous Solutions, it was clear that introduction of autonomous trucks necessitates a reevaluation of many standard practices within the trucking industry, including hours of service and delivery scheduling.
