Miyazaki is the only director whos work Iv ever actively followed, he's a true treasure for humanity with the art he creates. Your video is awesome, really did justice to his work and taught me a whole lot about the man himself. I cant wait to see what you make next!
Amazing video. I’ve grown up on Miyazaki films my entire life. My parents showed them to us in hopes of communicating lessons and values, of how to see the world differently. And I swear every time I watch one of the films (which is an unbelievable amount) or watch a video such as this I learn a new lesson. As a kid a lot of the grander and nuanced lessons didn’t hit home by now as a 19 year old it’s like opening new doors. And you did just that for Donald’s character. I always found him goofy and just one of “those” characters but after watching this I realize just how much depth his character has. Not in personality or motivation but what he is meant to represent. Thank you for this amazing video
It was only a few years back that I was first introduced to this gem of a movie, having been given a DVD of it by my brother at Christmas. I loved it instantly, and I consider it today to be perhaps the most underappreciated of Miyazaki's work, so kudos to you for making more people aware of it 😊
The Curtis characterization is pretty brutal but only the tip of the iceberg if you've watched enough anime. I'm pretty much agreeing with Miyazaki's sentiments, agree that America's a mess, and I don't think many folks were happy about the Iraq wars. Then there's NHK's documentary A century in film.
I do not take the critical view of the US as a negative. This film hits so many good notes. Political or otherwise. Criticism is what makes improvement. Not standing on current times
This is fantastic!! One of, if not the best video in this playlist! Thank you for it. (I'm also a pacifist who dislikes America, so Miyazaki and I get along just fine haha)
As an American, I've always found it sad how Miyazaki portrays us and thinks of us. I think it's understandable, but misguided. He only sees -- and portrays in Curtiss -- the worst parts of Americans; the natural dark sides of our best traits. We more than any other country truly believe that you can be anything you want to be, that you should have the freedom to do what you want, and that you are strong and brilliant enough to make it happen! But the flaw that can grow out of that is too much pride and individualism. It's sad to see only THAT displayed by one of my favorite directors, instead of nuance. Another area I wish he had more nuance in is war. I completely understand why he is a passivist, given his past, and I can empathize with that. But I don't think it's right or true to paint _all_ war and violence as wrong and evil. Sometimes, war and violence are sadly necessary. To protect your loved ones from evil people who want to kill and torture them (as the terrorist groups of the Middle East _literally_ hate us and want to eradicate us, to name just _one_ example). Protecting yourself and your people is justified. Additionally, we've been at war for so long mostly because we're surrounded by countries ruled by totalitarians who hate us, and hate that _their_ people want to _flock_ to our country because they'll be freer here. I don't think all the wars we've been involved in or waged have been justified... but we're a country almost constantly at war for a different reason. The totalitarian powers of this world want to see us wiped out, because we demonstrate from our very founding that people CAN stand up to the monarchs and elites who control them, take back power, and give themselves freedom and the weapons to defend that freedom. Great video!
Well, at least he was Marxist. And used to love you, I guess. :) Even the ending song of Porco Rosso is clearly about his young day of dreaming of a revolution.
It's an inferiority complex that some in the world have. They resent the fact that the US is the "big dog" despite, on some level understanding how the US creates a stable, free, democratic, and prosperous world.
It's interesting, in the Japanese film with English subtitles Fio is introduced as his granddaughter back from the States. In the English dubbed version (Disney), Fio is introduced as his granddaughter from America.
This i great and all but remember if America don’t have the strength to protect then who has? And of all Japan should remember that the Chinese do the massacre the Japanese did in china and the first to suffer if the US falls is Japan and their defensive forces know this. While the rest of europa after the Cold War has left their armies in crumbles and forgotten the art of war while some has not then you got a problem and your believes of pacifism in the face of a gun means nothing.
The author of this video and Miyazaki live in a fantasy world. It's clear they do not engage with history or current events with logic or in good faith. They are political extremists, and thankfully they don't represent most of the western world. This guy probably hates NATO 😂. He would probably side with Russia
And whos stifling military stature is crumbles their European allies military prowess ? With american bases in their countries, European leaders see no real reason to spend on their armies because mighty America will bail them out right. They would rather spend on other things their people want to get reelected no ? And Japan has bigger problems than China have you seen their debt and why they will never be able to pay it. And stop building up China they have the most highly structured country that with a large enough disruption they crumble, and the real reason why the US government doesn't do anything to these so called dangers to democracy is that if they do defeat them which they can they will be the sole superpower by miles and the only villain in the world.
Btw this is not me shitting on america but you guys keep fooling yourself and others and that annoys me and will bring unnecessary suffering to people who don't deserve it.
I think I'm? struggling to understand this video as an American, even though I hate my own country. I agree with alot of Miyazaki's views but struggle to comply cus of anti-American hate. Its a shit paradox for me but good movie and video!
Heya chief I dunno if you still feel this way but im ruminating on this thought as well. No country is really that great, America more so because of just how much damage we've done in such a short time. But I think what the vid is trying to say is that whats past is past, and us as individual products of the culture have it in us to leave the bad behind. Realize it and respect it, but move forward non the less, always careful to avoid further shit as much as any individual can. Hard to say what the future looks like, but so long as you're doing what you can and affecting those close to you. Its a helluva lot better then nothing at all. Fly on!
i think at it's core it's that miyazaki doesn't hate *americans* simply for being americans, he hates america and the americans that "buy into their own hype" so to speak
No, he clearly hates America simply as America. He is a bigot. If you hate items produced by America, and hate American culture simply because it comes from America.....that's not ok. Miyazaki is kind of a terrible person, even if he makes fantastic art. I mean come on.....he hates the idea of Japanese people enjoying American culture. That's bigotry at it's most basic. He has an inferiority complex, and has the basics of a fascist mindset. It makes sense considering he seems to have no objection to his country's fascist history. It's people like Miyazaki that make American foreign involvement necessary.

It's a shame they don't do a model of Gina's "flying Riva".
Are you doing this again this year? Thanks

Thank you so much, this comment made my day! Happy that my vid helped you appreciate this great film in another way :)
Miyazaki is, without a doubt, one of the GOATs!! Thanks for the insightful look at an interesting aspect of his work.
Criminally under-viewed video
Great video mate! I love the depth you gave to the historical contexts surrounding the settings and story of the film
In the end you see how Curtiss is really a non villain.
Miyazaki says he doesn’t like to make his villains unlikeable in a speech he gave at the Academy once.
As someone who has always felt something needed changing in my home country, I feel this hits all the right points. Miyazaki's dead-on.
This was a good one. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic video. Hit every point perfectly.
This video is so insightful and the editing is so good!! I hope it gets more views :(
dude this is too well made to only have 103 likes ;O;
Just got recommended this, absolutely awesome look back on porco rosso, thanks for making this!!!
You deserve more subscribers because that was PHENOMENAL
Great video man, I love how you referenced BREADSWORD

Hopefully youre still doing good man
This essay is so concise and insightful. Subscribed.
Amazing video! Very insightful and informative! And way too few views...

Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed it!
My favorite Miyazaki film.
Thank god Japan never was violent, seems like a peaceful country to me)

Great video!
I loved this video, it made me buy a lot of biographies about Miyazaki! (but do americans need to know that despite everything they save the day? XD)
Haha, I'm Russian, Miyazaki don't hates us... but doesn't draw such massive amount of inspiration from our culture as from American either)
Well, at least he was Marxist. And used to love you, I guess. :)
Even the ending song of Porco Rosso is clearly about his young day of dreaming of a revolution.
@@tykep1009He is a marxist but doesn't support what the soviets did
Oh lol, the Character is how the rest of the world sees America.
It's an inferiority complex that some in the world have. They resent the fact that the US is the "big dog" despite, on some level understanding how the US creates a stable, free, democratic, and prosperous world.
I may be mistaken, but isnt it Fio an American as well? I

He feels the same way normal Americans feel
