Regarding the album cover...the “freaks” aren’t under a circus tent. They’re out on the street, walking among us. Because, in some ways, we’re all freaks. 😉

There is a timeless quality to their music as a whole which is almost unique among the popular musical artists of that particular era. Maybe Stevie Wonder is similar, but a few years later.

The Doors appeared at the perfect time. I was 15 in 1967. The Summer of Love was right around the corner with all kinds of amazing music yet to be born. From a musical perspective, we were lucky to be young teens during this time. From a social turmoil perspective, we lived through some intense times. The Vietnam war was on a lot of our minds as we approached draft age. We escaped into our music in a big way.

The contrast between Manzarek's happy, carnivalesque keyboards and the vaguely sinister undertones of Morrison's lyrics and vocals is fascinating, and runs through many Doors tunes.

When I was a kid, one of my older brothers would play this song a lot. Jim Morrison wrote so many really good songs. "Hello, I love you", "Riders on the storm", "Love her madly", "Roadhouse Blues", way to many to list here. He wrote as far as I know 46 songs. To answer your question the lyrics came first. He often battled depression. This song came to him one evening when he had been talking to a friend about his depression, and realized that people are strange when your a stranger. That their faces did look ugly and that when suffering depression the streets did seem uneven because you can't really feel at those times that you are standing on solid even ground. Then the music was built around the song. This was the way with almost all of his songs. He honestly was an excellent poet who we are able to enjoy lyrically. As always excellent reaction guys. Stay safe and lots of love.

First song I ever sang for karaoke. I got up on stage and the host told me that the lyrics pretty much start right away and I was like yeah, I know. The music came on and I began singing into the mic. I was nervous as hell, but there was a guy singing coming through the speaker and I said to myself, "hey, that guy sounds like he knows what he's doing. I'm going to sing along with him." Yes, I said that about my voice coming through the speaker. It sounded that different than what it sounds like to me. I have learned to listen to the voice coming out of the speaker and adjust my voice to sound how I want it. Love this song.
My first experience with this song was actually from the movie The Lost Boys from the 1980s. If you haven't seen it, It is so deliciously 1980s and I highly recommend it and it includes this song on the soundtrack, and it fits perfectly.

So, fans who were at that gig (I think it was the Hollywood Bowl) knew the lyrics before hearing the song,The Celebration Of The Lizard. It’s my favorite by The Doors because it’s so creative and Progressive before the genre was even a thing. It’s a must guys trust me.

Alex is correct in that the strangeness of this track is that it is SO specific and SO unique: the same verse/chorus over...what is it? It sounds old even for the day, but then you're hard-pressed to find another example of songwriting like this within the rock idiom. That's the real reason the Doors are legend, less that the singer looked cool, or that the band wrote such great melodies - there was nothing like them before, and some [including myself] say we'll never hear a band quite like them again in rock and roll.
