absolutely 100% this. They are the soundtrack to a lot of high school memories (along with a lot of other 80s music). Unlike a lot of that other music, I can listen to Hall & Oates and not feel the cringe.
Andy & Alex also need to listen to Daryl Hall's solo hit "Dreamtime."

If you ever get the chance, I think you'd like, "Live from Darryl's House."
It's a show where Darryl Hall has other artists come to his house and jam with his band, performing some of the artist's songs and some H&O tunes.
He's had everybody who's anybody on there, they play amazing versions of the tunes they work, they eat good food, and everybody seems to have a good time.

A lot of people missed the 80s listening to 70s music. Once you explore the 80s alternative music (which is completely different from alternative music now)
You discover not just pop but New Wave, two tone, ska, rockabilly revival, funk, fusion, soul, synth pop, sophisti pop, punk etc, you’ll see everything was original and each band had their own style. It was generally more harmonic and more melodic and complex than subsequent music. It was the renaissance of pop music.

I grew up in the 80s, but I totally understand why Alex doesnt like the late 80s overproduction. Its not the music, its the sound. This song, being 1984, just makes the cut. By 1985, production values were starting to make music sound piercing, shrill and sterile. Its not about the music, it's the way the snare drum and guitars sound. The Big Bam Boom album is produced damn good. Their next album, Ooh Yeah is an overproduction mess. The production is so over the top, it ruins the music. I can tell that underneath all that crap production, there is a good song " Rocket To God" as an example . Had that song came out in 1982, it would have been fantastic. "Missed Opportunity" and " everything your heart desires", same thing - fire the producer, and would have been great. Bon Jovi is a band I would have loved, had the producers stripped it down. First BonJovi is well produced, then 1985 came along, and of course everything had to start sounding shrill. Traveling Wilburys and Tom Pettys Full Moon Fever are examples of what late 80s production should have sounded like - organic and very close to the actual sounds of the instruments. Robert Palmers Bad Case of Loving You from 79, sounds great. Take that same song, with the 1989 remix on his Addictions greatest hits remixed album, and suddenly the song just sucks.

will we be playing Tayor Swift in 40 years.. doubt it. Her music is basically a franchise, made by teams of people.. disposable content

Little things- like the title repeat over and over going to the fade out. Hall songs it uniquely different EVERY single time- changing it up so that it never ever gets old- makes SUCH a difference.

Great choice guys! As a guy who graduated HS in 1983, I can say that Hall & Oates were 1 of the 4 giants of music at this point (Van Halen, Journey & Foreigner).
"Big Bam Boom" is a killer album!

You should check out J. D. Souther's _Silver Blue_ from his album _Black Pearl_ . Not the Linda Ronstadt version of his song with him doing her backup vocal, but his solo version. His acoustic guitar is haunting.

I saw hall and Oates and tears for fears in Boston. Ive been to too many concerts. Ive seen so many bands. This was by far the best one I’ve ever seen. These two groups were complete representations of their generation. Like no other. Look up… tears for fears -“creep” cover. Its quite good

Darryl Hall did a series called Live at Darryl’s House for a while where he would have a different guest musician every episode and they would take turns doing each other’s songs. He had C-Lo Greene on one and I’ll tell you what, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard Darryl Hall singing “Fuck You.”

This was their last song to hit # 1 on the billboard hot 100, from 1984. It may have gotten overlooked but its a great song from a great year.1984 was a watershed year for music with Purple Rain, Born in the USA, Tina Turner's resurgence and Madonna dropping Like a Virgin

I have a new- found appreciation for Hall and Oates after hearing this. I was listening to The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, lots of Prog and Acid Rock when this came out. But my parents listened to this pop radio station in the mornings when they were getting ready for work. I heard this song one morning, and to my surprise as this was " too easy rock for me", I started singing to it. This particular version you played is much clearer than what I heard on their radio and is longer. What an incredible production.

The intro "Dance on your knees" is a must when playing this track. 1st 2 tracks on the album are basically one track as they segue brilliantly and the intro is only 1& 1/2 minutes long. Excellent album incidentally. ... You need to hear "Some things are better left unsaid" from this same album. Probably best track on the album ... which is saying something as every track is brilliant ! Don't say noone recommended it and why did it take so long to finally hear it if you wait months before you do ? The fade out goes very low...but ... listen to the very final seconds ...that scream !! It's a powerful track.
