The thing about Matteo is that he's a monster guitar player AND an incredible musician. A raising star who is already my favorite guitar player, too!
His stuff tends to sound unique because with his technique, you can play so different things that guitarists normally would. It's almost like different istrument. While it's not without caveats, respectively he can't do certain things, but those things he can't do, are mostly done to death
Matteo is top, but the most fun to listen for me is always Max Ostro. He sounds so unbelieveable cool, technical, melodic, tasty, relaxed, inspired, creative, spontaneous, best phrasing....he is just a musical wonder. The others are also good hard working players who perform their well practiced licks.
Technically, each of them is at the best level, but musically it is weak. It resembles a warm-up before exercise. That's why I don't listen to fusion. However, I must admit that among them, Max Ostro has the best ear. There is clearly a musical story coming through in his work.
@@rockytalkieAs someone who is a fusion fan, I really liked your “musical story” description. Far too often it feels like fusion players play outside for the sake of it or play fast for the sake of it, without any a feel for the music. One of the things that sets amazing fusion players apart like Holdsworth and Guthrie is the ability to form a narrative through their improvisation, being technical but only to the extent the music requires. Max Ostro is one of the few guitarists I’ve ever heard that can blend amazing phrasing, perfect note choice, and just the right amount of restraint. He’s probably my favorite guitarist in the world right now, and the fact that he’s only 19/20 years old is insane to me. He’s an anomaly, and as much as I enjoy the other 4 players on this video, Max is by far my favorite. 😁

It's hard to see this as a Collab since they are basically all playing on quite different tracks. That's what makes a collab interesting is to see how each approaches the same track. Still, great playing of course.
Honestly, I sort of prefer individual tracks, I think it allows players to express themselves freely with tracks best suited for their style, essentially giving "the best" for each guitarist to showcase their ability. That's my interpretation at least, but they had a similar sort of idea for their Christmas jam with multiple people on the same backing track and it definitely highlighted their playing compared to one another, so I definitely see where you're coming from too.
I totally get you mate! It was a hard call when writing this one to keep the vibe similar or go towards the directions each player favoured/wanted. I think I made the right call in the end to compose the track as I did as it totally highlights the strengths of each player in their respective musical context. Like for Josh, I KNEW I wanted to get some sort of vibe in quintuplets as I think it fits his playing amazingly well. The same goes for George, who I know leans towards more of the rock fusion stuff, rather than jazz fusion. And Max literally requested "diatonic funk" haha! The most fun thing about it all is that it's actually technically one track, all in one HUGE mix session, with drum transitions between each section, and each solo flows into the next one, so it's like a collab/medley. Thanks for the feedback though! Maybe we need to do more "collab" collabs where it's over the same groove or something

So jaw dropping that I have to rank this jam : 1. Matteo Mancuso (amazing fusion melodies and who can top that no pick playing?) 2. But I ranked Matteo number 1 not only because of the great melody but also because of that insane "no pick playing". As a guitarist, I can relate how hard it is to play fast without a pick.
To me, Matteo, Josh and Max here are in the top for their insane phrasing and tone. Matteo has unbelievable control because of his no pick technique, Josh's right hand technique is also very unique to him, looks very relaxed and clearly extremely efficient. Max's right hand technique reminds me of the old school fusion/shred players - also quite similar to Guthrie, minimal and precise movements, always ready to switch to hybrid. However, Matteo and Josh are outstanding to me here because of their innovative choice of intervals they use to craft the melodies which makes it sound more musical rather than a collage of guitar licks/techniques that happen to sound ok with the backing track. And of course, every guitarist in this video is top tier :)
@steelbender8566 ah I see my friend. I too play with fingers like Matteo, I've studied Classical since 5yo and when I changed to electric the easiest way to adapt was to play with fingers. As such I understand Mancuso's finger language and as good technique as it is, it's just good technique. Atm I use a pick and 3 fingers, hybrid picking, like Tom Quayle for example, it's as hard as playing fingers. And pick only is also hard. So I believe that each style has its advantages and disadvantages, some stuff is harder and easier, at the end of the day its just the technique you prefer for the stuff you play and what you got used to and better at. On another note, all great players, massive fan of all of them and I wish I can some day get there, but GG will always be the king. Gonna go watch him live in Portugal next Saturday. Cheers 🤘

Cheers 🤘
