  • More young people than ever are coming forward to explore their gender identity. Last year, 2,500 under-18s were referred to NHS England' s gender identity clinics for support. Some are hoping to get access to potentially irreversible treatments as soon as they can. Doctors are divided about the best way to help - so what is the evidence? Dr Faye Kirkland investigates how much we understand about the care being offered to transgender children.

    I was a foster parent, many girls wanted to be trans and identify as boys. This is a call out for help. Spending time in my healthy stable home allowed them to gain confidence as young women again.

    The core lesson from the issue of trans kids is the same as it is for psychiatry, and indeed for everything important in life.
    Requirement number
    1: UNDERSTAND the facts. Understand what we know, and what we don't: be clear and honest about the limits of our knowledge. We haven't done this with the trans issue: we have NO IDEA how many trans people regret the medical intervention: we have no data on long-term outcomes of trans people on any treatment regieme or lack thereof.
    2. ACCEPT WHAT IS. We need obviously to accept what is in life, because to do otherwise is, as Tolle says, insanity. That means socially, we need to accept the reality of gender dysphoria and the desire to transition: we need to accept the limits of our knowledge: but also this means we should always encourage children to accept what is, including the nature and the characteristics of their physical body. I don't mean we should discourage children from seeking to transition, but any decision should follow from accepting what is, because in some cases, accepting what is will transform what is, and they may not need surgery or hormones once acceptance is established. This is not to discourage people from transitioning but to reduce the incidence of regret, sometimes suicidal, and destransitioning, sometimes hopelessly unsuccessfully.
    3. COMMUNICATE, DISCUSS: there needs to be a social discussion - we need to communicate what we know and what we don't to the public, and we need an honest, truth-seeking discussion about what we (don't) know about gender dysphoria, about treatment, and about long-term outcomes in trans kids. We need to be honest about the fact that we haven't got the technology to turn a woman into a man or vice versa, that a trans woman is necessarily different, biologically and socially, to a cis woman: we're never honest about this obvious fact. All we can achieve medically is a cosmetic change, but there will always be biological differences to the cis gender, some potentially serious, and many not fully understood.
    4. ACT. Once we understand and accept what is, both socially and personally, then we can communicate that understanding and use it to reduce misunderstanding, prejudice, assumptions, tensions and conflicts. This in itself is action, but from understanding will come right action on a number of levels - realistic and reasonable social and legal responses to the reality of gender dysphoria/trans people, good advice and support for people struggling with such issues and their family, as well as appropriate medical or non-medical treatments etc. We should also use our understanding to purge our discussions of trans issues of our non-facts - our assumptions, mere opinions and judgements, assertions, demands and so forth, and we should purge our discussions of all non-factual, presumptuous or false claims like "I can change sex", "even when I was a kid I knew I was a woman", etc etc etc. We will hopefully also stop pouring out insults and accusations such as 'you're transphobic' every time someone fails to join the bandwagon of uncritical affirmation of medical intervention into childhood states we are very far from understanding scientifically. It's ironic that on the one hand, trans activists often assert that trans is something real, healthy, a right and a choice etc, yet demand medical treatment for it as if it were a disorder, a disease. I think there is a degree of double speak here, but I really am not criticising these trans activists: the whole of our society and culture is replete with these deficits in reasoning, communicating, understanding and being clear, honest, correct, factual - it's jus that issues surrounding genda in the most-trans era have really blown up into a particular mess, largely owing to epistomological confusion.

    • @Vic2point0
      @Vic2point0 4 года назад +12

      @@narconyx You're exposing part of the problem here: You think that questioning/disagreeing = bullying. Maybe we should teach kids instead that A. It *isn't* bullying/hate for someone to disagree with you, and B. You can cope with these feelings and events in a much healthier way. Trans people are still 18 times more likely to commit suicide even if they have the surgery, and there's no evidence to show a significant decrease in areas where it's more widely accepted.
      Another problem with your solution is that it then leads to the legalization of child sexual abuse. If they are to be treated as an adult, then any grown man can be in a sexual relationship with them, under the premise that they're actually an adult (and if you say otherwise you're a -phobe of some kind). And of course we know such a thing could and would be overused. Any kid would *love* to have all the same rights and privileges as adults, whether they're prepared to have them or not. And so you'd see the number of trans-age (or whatever) kids skyrocket, and again, you'd be dismissed as a hateful bully if you dared to question any of it.
      Also, I notice you skipped over the scenario of a white man identifying as black. Any particular reason?

    • @narconyx
      @narconyx 4 года назад

      @@Vic2point0 well, I see your point, but when calling someone female Pre-transition, they are obviously a male, and because of that limitations are applied, most Pre-transition people can't go in the opposite gender bathroom, but if they want to buy women's clothing, go for it. Same for a kid who wants to be an adult, if they want to have a more serious adult conversation, or wear more "adult like clothing" they can go for it, however, I wouldn't let them do anything that breaks the law. Sure, they can be treated more like an adult, but logic still must be applied,cause realistically, they are still a child.

    • @Vic2point0
      @Vic2point0 4 года назад +7

      @@narconyx But you can see how the same kind of rhetoric often thrown at us (people who disagree with transgenderism) could be thrown at you. You wouldn't let a child (who you'd be expected to call an adult, if such a movement were to take off) enter into a sexual relationship with a grown man. This could be reported by the media or others as you not acknowledging trans-age rights or even being *hateful* of trans-age people. And there wouldn't be any way to defend yourself against that without appealing to science and observation, by way of pointing out how they're a child even if they identify as or feel like an adult.
      This is where we, who disagree with transgenderism, find ourselves concerning the present-day trans movement.

  • @Vic2point0
    @Vic2point0 4 года назад +10

     @Eri Si "Than what is your point,"
    That transgenderism is a completely incoherent and inconsistent worldview and no one should be encouraging it, especially in children.
    "you just seem attracted to any avenue that would facilitate discriminating trans people.
    "
    I don't see what the "discrimination" would be...
    "Science affirms gender is real,"
    Well of course it's real. But transgenderism requires people to confuse gender with the inclination/disinclination to adhere to gender roles and norms. That, or say "Well I just feel like I'm a woman", but that angle has its share of problems too. I suspect you don't want me to elaborate, however.
    "that it is seperate to sex"
    Not at all. Gender and biological sex are one and the same. That's why the roles we're expected to play solely on the basis of our biological sex are called "gender roles". People look at us, determine we are biologically male, and expect us to "act like" a man. What we "identify" as doesn't even come into the picture.
    "Respecting someone's pronouns is one aspect that helps certain people greatly and is incredibly simple to do."
    And this is where the inconsistency of the worldview comes in. It would also help any person who believes x (no matter how false) if we agreed with them that x was true. And it's *also* incredibly simple to do. And yet, time and time again, when I ask a trans person or advocate whether they'd call a white man black or a child an adult (if they so identified), I typically get a resounding "No".
    "I find it strange that people argue over such things rather than accord someone respect and humanity."
    And I find it strange that you think disagreeing = disrespecting, or that it's somehow denying them their humanity.

    • @katiepert7746
      @katiepert7746 3 года назад +3

      Biological sex and gender are not one and the same. Biological sex refers to physical characteristics, chromosomes, genitals, hormones etc... and gender to behaviours or characteristics that are associated with sex but don't nessesarily have to be adhered to so some boys might be more stereotypically 'feminine' and vice versa - if a boy displays more 'feminine' traits this does not necessitate that he should then transition to a female. Most people don't completely conform to their gender, we have always had 'tom boys' and 'effeminate men'

    A. Their biological gender is what it is, and I have every right to say what it is, just like you have every right to disagree.

    "just like if you think trans children should not have the right to healthcare that is transphobic,"
    That doesn't follow either. And not only for the reasons I already gave, but also because I could even *support* people "transitioning" just not when they're children.
    "and if you support trump you are homophobic and transphobic,"
    A. That doesn't logically follow, even if we assume for the sake of argument that Trump himself is "homophobic" or "transphobic" (and if we go by your made-up definition which seems to be "disagrees with" homosexuality/transgenderism).
    and B. I don't think any of the things on your list necessarily indicate that Trump is opposed to homosexuality/transgenderism.
    "if they have been used for 40+yrs on cis kids with precocious puberty then that’s enough time to know the long term affects"
    Oh so you meant to type "precocious" earlier, I see. Still, there's a difference between regulating an abnormal hormone issue and deciding to toy with it when there's no actual danger. Altering the body because the mind has adopted a worldview that doesn't stand up to scrutiny is just never a good idea.
