I lived in an old 4 bedroom house, that need so much repair, new windows, new roof, I knew I could never have the money to do these, so I sold as is. My children had both moved abroad and I couldn't afford to buy nor rent where they are so I moved to Spain. I rent and can live on my pension and I'm so close to everything, I walk. Don't drive anyway. I watch my grocery bill and watch my utilities and I'm living my best life. I spent 50 yrs in Iceland and am enjoying food weather and meeting all kinds of new ppl. It's great ! I'm mostly doing what you just said, budgeting and use any extra for a meal out or a coffee. It can be done ❤

Thank you for caring enough to share these suggestions. I do so many of them already & will be trying others as life goes on.
To me, there is a difference between not having money & being “poor”. I have trouble making ends meet & strive to stay within my budget, but I am rich in wisdom & friendships. Money will be tight the rest of my life, I imagine, but I’m a tough woman & I know somehow I will manage. I won’t spend frivolously, I won’t make major purchases, but I will enjoy these last decades, all I’ve achieved, and all the wonderful people I’ve been blessed to have as friends.

Oh Margaret you are such a kind caring person. We had over 133000 dollars taken from our account and couldn't recover it. It was a difficult pill to swallow because we have been frugal our whole lives. My husband is now retired and we were depending on that money for specific projects. Sooo we are still frugal and living a day at a time. We are rich spiritually and have been married for 44 yrs. I always ask myself do I need something or do I want it. I used to splurge once in a while but now at our age (75) I am just thankful to be alive. We have enough for our needs and that's all we need. Thank you so much for your compassion and sweet spirit. I'll always consider you my friend.

Hello from Toledo, Ohio. I do a lot of your ideas already. I would like to mention going to food banks. Besides human food some of them have food for your pets and other useful items, i. e. laundry detergent, toilet paper, shampoo, etc. Another way to cut expenses is to go with a cheaper cell phone plan. Discontinue your land line phone. I have decided to eat more of a plant based diet which is less expensive than a meat eating diet. As a bonus I feel better, too. Good luck to all my sisters on our shared journey. We are all in this together. ❤❤❤

It all starts with changing your mindset and thinking creatively about wants vs. needs. I revamped my entire way of life - selling the house, car, furniture, jewelry, etc...and stopped spending on little things like make-up, haircuts, manicures, gym/spa, coffee out. Now my budget easily covers all my true needs (housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance) and every extra dollar goes into saving and investing - with no debt. Peace of mind is worth more than anything else I could buy.

Margaret, your ideas and suggestions related to strategies to manage and survive on a fixed income couldn't have come at such a critical period of many senior citizens. Your suggestion to be honest and upfront with friends and let them know I can't afford to attend lunch, dinner etc, made me realize I need to be honest with myself first. I don't need to attend every invitation received for baby showers, bridal showers, any invite where a gift is expected. Sure, I will attend showers related to family members that are dear to me, but will decline invites from "acquaintances" and their families. I've recently learned to make a little extra money by selling my clothes and accessories through consignment shops, it's a way of clearing out unused items and making a little something to take my husband out to dinner!

I was raised by frugal parents and I am glad I was! I have learned to be very happy with little. One trick I am trying right now is to go into the shops less often. I used to grocery shop twice a week. Now, I am aiming to go once every two weeks. It saves on transportation costs, time, and I am less tempted to pick up frivolous items. This is great especially during the winter months when weather can be hazardous. I am seeing the savings! Thank you, Margaret, for this practical video.

You are right - going to the shops more often leads to more impulse buying. I try to go JUST for the items I need. Sometimes I avoid a trip by having a ´using up’ day - I just eat what I already have in, using up bits and pieces can sometimes prove inspiring and tasty ❤ I enjoyed your post - thanks.

During Covid, I started shopping online for groceries and I've continued doing it. I pick up my groceries once a week and don't have to pay a fee. I was never crazy about grocery shopping anyway, so this is really nice and saves me time. It also keeps me from picking up things I don't need.

Margaret, I recently lost my part-time job. But although it's less money coming in, there's less going out. I've hardly bought anything in January or February, because I need less! It's been no- buy February, and I like it! I do worry about rents , cost of living in the States and around the world. I go to the dollar store, even for health and beauty aids, instead of the local drugstores, which are way too pricey lately. My clothes, which are simple, jeans and tee shirts, mostly, I like to get at the thrift shops. I always say, I'm a plain Jane, not a fancy Nancy, lol. I don't wear a lot of makeup; I recently donated quite a bit, and am "shopping my stash", using what I have. No need to buy every new skincare and makeup item..same for hair. I cut and color my own now. Love to you and all the ladies in our situation. Thank you so much for this! Rosemarie ❤️

I can still make it there but I told my adult daughters and mother I plan on leaving in a few years , maybe living abroad in Panama or Mexico for better weather, less harried stressful and more affordable way of life.

Thank you for your transparency. There’s far too much money shaming done. Making poor money choices in the past isn’t an albatross anyone should wear. We did it, it’s done. And it’s okay.
I am lucky that my situation allows me a bit of money to get out and do things. I often don’t because my mobility is a little limited but there’s still a lot I can do. You inspired me yesterday with your trip on Lake Luzerne. I live in a small town but near some major metro areas. I have a car and can get around. But even when I want to go do something, I’m faced with the inertia of choosing. I’m going to do what I’ve done in the past. I’m going to gather some ideas of things to do and make lists of free things, low cost things and moderate things. I’ll keep those lists handy and once a week or so, I’ll pick something from an appropriate list based on my budget. I’m less than an hour from some amazing museums that are free or low cost and less than a gallon of gas away. My hobby is art work and going to museums would be inspiring. Just as inspiring would be a trip to the library to thumb through coffee table books.

Thank you so much for this video to come, Margaret. From your videos, I have completely rethought my own future. I have been trying to sell my little bungalow ( 1960s build in the UK ), which is in need of modernising but beyond what I could afford to do. Not sold yet due to market conditions and sadly, I have had two broken chains in the last 10 months. But they say everything happens for a reason and given I was thinking could I find something a bit bigger once I had sold, I realise that would be so foolish when I could get rid of ‘ stuff ‘ and find a more modern, easy to keep, easier to heat home ( albeit a house ), for myself. Looking forward to this video and thank you for getting me thinking and into a different mind set. 💕

Thank you, Margaret, great tips! If a person owes a hospital medical balance you can call the MANAGER of billing and ask if you can pay it off with a lower amount in cash. It is all you have and can pay today. Example: Owe $1200, cash payoff $800? This was recommended to me by a friend (hospital board of director and financial planner) May not always work but if you have the money to do it, is worth giving it a try🌺

Thank you for sharing these thoughts. Thinking of selling home to move nearer my son so it’s easier for him and to help the loneliness issues. But it’s an older neighborhood and near a city rife with crime. We’re all professionals but today’s prices across the board pose money issues for all of us young and me now on fixed income at age 77 dumped after 30 years of marriage. One tries to be brave but unseen forces assail us and how to we fight back? Sites like yours and honest discussions at least lend support on many levels.
Being heard and being supportive for each other is a wonderful gift.
    Thank you.

Those are all helpful tips. Thank you, Margaret. I am fortunate that my husband and and I planned for our retirement in our younger years so that now that I’m a widow, I can stay in the 55+ mobile home park where we’ve lived for 20 years. I sort of went on a spending spree after he passed just trying to fill that big void that was left at the time (last June) but have come to my senses since then. My credit card was compromised recently and I don’t have a backup card. It forced me to just use my debit card for food and gas for a while and I will continue to do that for the rest of the month. Huge savings in taking some time off from anything but the necessities.

Some transit systems have a Senior's pass for 45 dollars a year. I got mine. I take art lessons for free with the local arts council. I volunteer a lot, attend festivals, events for free in exchange for a bit of work. I bought my furniture second hand from an online thrift shop in my area that delivers! And yes, I buy a lot of clothes second hand or on sale. I'm looking at a program that subsidizes Seniors for buying at the local Farmer's Market. Most towns have an advocacy group for Seniors, see what goodies/ subsidies are available.

Margaret, your messages are always meaningful to hear, and the love you exude is a joy and blessing.
I’m newly retired, have always had one or three jobs at a time, self reliant to a fault, and facing the loss of a paycheque for the first time in 50 years is terrifying me. I have a spouse, but have always been the breadwinner and he is very bad with money. The adjustment is brutal, realizing all I will need to replace that work gave me. One thing Im just realizing is how now living on a fixed income and much tighter budget will cause separation and distance from some relationships I have with people who are in a very different economic situation than me (now). One thing I’m grateful for is that I grew up poor and I know how to adjust ( not just work) and that my best friendships are with others who share this life experience. As you can gather ….this could be a great topic for one of your wonderful talks. Namaste.

I was nobody's child. Not only did I live in different Canadian provinces but I lived with different family members and at times I was sent to Germany to live with different family members, so I really was nobody's child. And along with it came not having permanent friends, having no means at all, certainly not any money to spend on any little goodies, and I distinctly remember at one point thinking that the day you got a pork chop was like a godsend. It would have been nice to be more loved and secure, but I learned from it and completely applied all my life lessons to my children. And with it I started a new train of thought for them. It's important that you look at yourself and the world around you and think hey what is there that I need to change that I need to apply to make things better for the next generation. It's not always only about you.

I'm trying to convince my husband to trial a period of time to live in a third world country. I'm favoring Siem Reap, Cambodia, mainly due to their simple Visa requirements. We would be able to travel to several nearby countries that border Cambodia. You can get a nice 1 bedroom for $300 or less. It appears eating out/street food, but even many restaurants, are cheaper than cooking in. I only eat 1 main meal a day, but do eat snacks. I have been studying this for several months now. We could definitely live for a lot less but also be able to enjoy travel to other countries because of that. Here in the U.S. I feel we exist. It has become unaffordable to so many. I am grateful for what I have, compared to many, but it would be nice to enjoy more of what life we have left. I realize this would not be an option many people would choose, but I'm adventurous that way. 😊

Former teacher from Oregon here- I’ve essentially transferred my base to Mexico (keeping only an inexpensive storage unit in Portland). Sold my car too. My life in Mexico costs roughly half of what life in Portland cost, and it’s only that much because I am currently in a heavily immigrant/expat area in Mexico. My Spanish has improved significantly, which means I would feel comfortable living in other parts of the country so I could easily live well on 1/3 of the $ it took to simply survive in Portland.
I hope your husband is willing to try going to Cambodia-it will be amazing!

One thing I would encourage women in our community is to use food pantries. It helps stretch your budget and provides basic food. And many have hours for seniors only or serve seniors only. People in the same situation. And so many libraries loan out board games. We get together and have fun for free…good for our brains.

I work part-time teaching English to supplement my SS income; and am living comfortably and content. I stick to my budget. My grown children do not need me.
