    Hi Margaret!
I especially enjoyed this topic, because balance is a huge topic for me while teaching my yoga classes. I’m 72, by the way.
It IS possible to improve balance, but it takes commitment. I had a student who was unable to do Tree Pose, but she worked on it every single day until she was able to do Tree unassisted. In my classes, my students know to have a chair handy. We use the back of the chair for support and stability. A wall or kitchen counter are also great props for balancing practice.
One of my private students is approaching 87. I’ve worked with her for years and have noticed a steady decline in her strength and balance. But she doesn’t give up. She continues to have a daily yoga practice and meets with me 1x weekly. And she pays very close attention to her posture and how her body moves!
Leg strength is crucial. Also having a solid foundation, starting with the feet. I don’t wear shoes in my house. In colder weather, I wear socks, This helps to strengthen the muscles in my feet. Ankle strength is also super important. Lifting and lowering the heels is something else I stress in classes, with or without the use of a chair.
Paying attention to one’s surroundings, and using good judgment are super important, as you stressed. I’ve learned a few lessons the hard way over the last year. Like, avoid cutting the grass until it’s completely dry. And, don’t even think about walking on ice!
And as you so beautifully described, feeling stable in one’s footwear is of utmost importance as we age. Thanks again for addressing this very important topic! 🙏

I am 71yrs old and rather short, so I was using a step ladder to reach the top two shelves of my kitchen cupboards almost daily. One day, for no particular reason, I forgot I was on the 2nd step of the ladder and stepped back to the floor, completely missing the 1st step. Fortunately, I didn't suffer any breaks or fractures but it was a wakeup call. I now have the 2 top shelves of my kitchen empty, no more step ladder for me. Phew! Close call

Sometimes with snow you don't realize that underneath the snow lays a layer of ice. I'm now 61 but have been aware of stairs for long time. Always hold on too rails and mindfull when on stais

Broken ankle? Oh no! Slipped and slid down my front steps last year because of black ice. Luckily the steps are wood so I was a little bruised but not hurt that badly. BUT I no longer wait for the super to put out icemelt. I bought a bag of my own and when it's cold and snowy, I toss it out on the stairs as soon as the snow or rain stops!

Sooo sorry people did not come to your aid. I miss the times where folks rushed to help a fallen person. (Some still do.) After falling down 2 steps I was in a wheelchair for 6 months. I was only in my 50's then. I sit on the floor and stand everyday now. I often use hiking sticks when walking. We all need to stretch and do balance exercises every morning. Building muscle is not easy, but we need to keep at it. I think of it, routines needed as we age, as a good cup of tea. Good luck everyone.

A much needed helpful video today - thank you. I am 74 next month and over the past year have definitely noticed a big change in my balance. Having two new hips has not made this problem easier. I am very careful coming down steps now and like you Margaret I always use a handrail to keep me steady. I really do not like walking down big open expanses of steps without rails. I also noticed stepping down is a problem. I like to travel by train but often there is a large step down onto the platform and the wide gap between the train and platform causes me problems.
I recently noticed a lady - considerably younger than me had a very sparkly walking stick. I just had to ask her where she had bought it. It was a plan straight stick, not the collapsible type. She had bought rolls of sticky back plastic crystals from Amazon and decorated the stick- it was very “blingy” with crystals - so effective. It just makes having to use a stick - which no one really like to have to do - slightly better. I am converting my stick now!
Thank you for highlighting this important problem. Even a minor fall or stumble can result in a lot of pain or being laid up for a while and none of us ever want this.

I’m 76! I stopped working as a Nursing Assistant three years ago. I had serious back trouble for 14 years and then worked for 20 years. Up until a year ago I did housework and lifted boxes that I shouldn’t and went for walks most of the winter. After pulling muscles and being in bed off and on I finally decided to grow up and act my age! I don’t consider myself an old lady but some may argue that! 😅 Now I exercise inside in the winter and stand on the porch for fresh air. I do housework less often instead of trying to be perfect. I go to the Dr and maybe lunch and shopping.
I realize if I complain about my age I’ll waste the rest of my years. Why not enjoy what’s left and be happy!
Thank you for your videos and comments. It really helps to know others understand what we’re going through and share our feelings and be thankful we’re hear to see each new day!🙏❤️🎼🕊🌷

This video spoke to me. Margaret! I'm 66 and have had bad balance for years due to an inner ear issue. I've fallen countless times, and it's so hard to get back up without help. Now I use a walking stick from an outdoors recreation store, it's skinny and height adjustable. I don't feel like I'm using a cane. It's hard to remember to take it with me when I go outside, but luckily my husband reminds me and I go back to get it. We RV a lot, and there's uneven ground everywhere. Just a slight dip is enough to make me fall. The confidence I have now is worth any silly embarrassment I may have had. I highly recommend a walking stick.

Plus, in the winter when sidewalks and streets get icy. Where I live the temperature fluctuations quite a bit. I no longer fly up and down the stairs in my house. I'm glad you pointed out that we shouldn't consider this a drawback as we age. It's a great way to stay safe. Recently I asked myself why was I rushing? I have nothing to urgently attend to. Slow down and walk elegantly down the stairs holding the railing. That's my new philosophy.
Recently, I saw a video on RUclips why people fall when walking. Suggestions by physical therapist were to look up,touch ground with heel first, and swing arms to balance your body. I've been doing this, and so far so good.

Age related muscle atrophy...We can fight back on this one, it will take time/effort. However it will be worth it in quality of life. Kitchen counter tops are great for building increased stability( standing yoga tree pose holding the counter). please do more on the latest material on changes we are or could face in the future. Hi Margaret, thanks for the info. My cousin who's 79 yrs old has been using the practice of standing on a wobble board when he's doind stationary things, like brushing teeth, shaving and also uses it in kitchen while chopping veg etc. He has heart and other aging (+ poor diet) issues but it looks like he has kept his balance as stable as possible.

There are several you tube videos on exercising for balancing by physical therapist, I am impressed with them. by the way you look so good! Your make~up and your smile are outstanding 😊

When walking on a decline maybe don't start with your heel but use your toes. Pick your feet up so your shoes won't catch on something. Standing on one foot without holding onto something is a good exercise for balance. Seniors don't have a market on falling, it just takes us longer to recover. Remember....we are the boomers and there are a lot of us. 😊 What a community!

1 am 80 ,4 years ago I came home from a holiday and went in the garden to hang out the washing ,I tripped over the prop and cut my leg ,it went septic ,I should have had it dressed at the wounds clinic ,I got to know that clinic well as since then I have had three more always on my left leg and always tripping over something ,on my 80 birthday a fell over my handbag as I have very thin skin I was cut from under my knee right down my leg , I was lucky not to need a skin graft it took months to heal ,I was in a wheel chair then a rolater to hold on then a stick now okay.i found a balance class I had asked the hospital doctor to refer me ,we are given exercises ,to do at home as well ,it gives me confidence ,I also go to a class in the church hall exercises to music seated to strengthen my legs .i have done these for six months now.I find I see things that could trip me up all the time ,my bag is put on a table not the floor,my scarf is made shorter so as not to be a tripping hazard .i wear protective arm and leg sleeves.I am determined not to fall again.🙏

Just found this video Margaret. That’s sounds like a painful fall! I too am noticing changes, I’m 61 later this year. I’m just about to move house too from having lived in a single story home for 20 years to a two story home with STAIRS. I am a bit worried about this but my single story home needs a lot of work and updating that I can’t afford to do now and the house I’m moving to is a new build so I hope will last me a few years without the need to keep spending on it. My friends who live in two story homes tell me that stairs are good for health. Hmmm, I’m sure they are right but it does get a bit more risky I think. What do all the lovely ladies here think about stairs and single story vs two story living? 💕

Yes, yes, but never before I had two surgeries, one emergency back to back. I think it’s from all the mega antibiotics and anesthesia I had and it did permanent damage. I researched it and it does cause permanent damage. Although I’m grateful to be alive, I am very aware and I’ve never been the same. I do have a walking stick for balance, but haven’t used it in a while. Thank you for bringing up this good reminder. I surely felt my aging with this. ❤️

So it takes a little longer to get somewhere or do things, it’s ok, I’m retired! Walking down stairs is harder than walking up but still takes time. I started qigong to help with my balance and acupuncture for my knees. So yes, thinking about ways to do things differently is a challenge but taken into account for me. 🙏🏽🙋🏻‍♀️👍🏽Mia
