The more closely I listen to ABBA, the more I realize those four were operating at a level way beyond what most musicians ever are. Such complexity and arrangement!

LOL i came hear because i needed to listen to some nice simpler music, ABBA, due to me listening to to much complex music ; haha thats why i come to songs like this, to downgrade to much simpler for a while
I really agree with you. In this song, for example, there are elements of baroque .. and it has two different consecutive chords. The piano theme at the beginning and end is genial.
This is a GREAT song. Excellent keyboard riff into the chorus. Great harmony. Great dynamics between verses and chorus. This song is a masterpiece from beginning to end.
Exactly! I was just getting into rock music and just "heard them on the radio" but never really listened to them. Started really listening to them about 10 years ago. So extremely talented.
What you're describing is Saudade. It's a Portuguese word that describes a yearning for a happiness that has passed, or perhaps never even existed. Americans call it nostalgia.
Gotta say, though they had so many greats, this is my favorite ABBA song. That opening keyboard riff, the chord structure, the harmonies, Agnetha’s lead vocals, how the song kicks into higher gear during that epic chorus…all of it is brilliant.

This one of ABBAs most beautiful and haunting love songs. The piano solo is so catchy and it has such a bittersweet melody. Cheery and light yet a touch of sentiment. My favorite. Of course... Agnethas sweet voice is a plus
As a swede its very nice to visit different clips with ABBA , not just only for watching the videos, also to read the comments from people all over the world about what they meant to you. Yes, it makes me proud and it gives a good feeling.
I came to know of your country because of this band when I was a teenager...they were my 1st musical discovery. then i discovered Bergman s movies and fell in love with swedish language, Tried to learn it, but it was very difficult to find teachers here, so i found the Dannish church and learned some danish some years ago!!!!, From Buenos Aires, Argentina, there you go a story that started off of Abba
This song oversizing the value of the so called "pop music" - and making that "classical music".... The perfection is in the music, and that's eternal. The age-effect irrelevant, as we can hear Mozart as classical, even in his age he was just pop....
The slight imperfections, the naivety in the English lyrics + the accents just add to the genuine melancholy. This is a pop masterpiece - perfect arrangement, perfect performance. Stunning.
Do you think that the accented singing adds a little more poignancy to the English lyrics because of the potential emotional sensitivity of anyone in an unfamiliar environment (and who thereby must have an accent) who also suffers a relationship break-down there? And who is thus cast even more adrift? (Who would likelier be without the same levels of support that someone without an accent would have). And what imperfections in the grammar or style of the lyrics do you detect? I do not see any. If you compare how letters and postcards were written in the mid-70s to those of today (if people still write letters and postcards!), then you would see a lazier attempt at writing generally today that's clumsy with wording. The net effect of that is a tendency towards insincerity and aloofness, because we are all told to rush around like headless chickens today - and letter-writing is a chore. Unlike yesterday. The art of song-writing has already died though. (In S.O.S., the protagonist singer, as I understand, is still on the periphery of her former boyfriend's life - down, but not out!)
In S.O.S., the protagonist singer is still on the periphery of her former boyfriend's life. She's down, but not out. That is what the lyrics convey to me. And no break-up of a strong relationship was ever a fait accompli - that's the message of this cleverly written and well-meaning song.
It's a pop song - but one of great depth. A song that most everyone can relate to / can connect strongly to - and yet would fear to hear (on a personal level). Hope and despair (the emotional plea for love to wake up again). Amazingly bitter and sweet with respect to lyrics and music. Powerful combinations.
Even John Lennon said that this was one of his favorite songs! That’s proof to show how many people love ABBA out in the whole world. I mean Queen Elizabeth’s favorite song is Dancing Queen!

Pop perfection,my favourite abba song,it lifts my spirits when I'm depressed and feel low.The music, the lyrics and of course the beautiful vocal delivery is outstanding.Abba thank YOU for the music ❤️❤️
Most metal musicians respect ABBA and metal songwriters have created riffs based on pretty much all ABBA's tunes. ze melodies.. And pretty much all metalheads that i know binge some ABBA once in a while, or do it regularly to get some variety from whatever metal they listen to. It's usuallly young teens that are way into some metal sub enre that will hate on ABBA.. Zealous youths.
@@LoudnessJP Well no one is ever going to call me a youth again, that's for sure....I'm 43 in a few days... I just think it's funny, usually I stick on some metal to make the morning go faster while I work, some AD/DC, some Maiden, Saxon etc....maybe a bit of SepticFlesh or similar if the customers are annoying....but I woke up that morning humming "The Winner Takes It All" and ended up in an ABBA loop that hasn't actually ended yet.
It's what my mum called their "thump and tinkle" (she liked them): they have a gentle, tuneful verse, then a punchy chorus. (I think Chiquitita is probably the best example, but they're nearly all of that pattern. Though they can do other styles - instrumental like Arrival, heavy rock like Does Your Mother Know/Hole in your Soul/Sole). But the verse and chorus sums them up best, I think. Even my favourite, Thank You for the music.

The love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone, though I try, how can I carry on?
[Interlude]
[Chorus]
So, when you're near me, darling, can't you hear me? S.O.S
And the love you gave me, nothing else can save me, S.O.S
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone, though I try, how can I carry on?
[Outro]
When you're gone, how can I even try to go on?
When you're gone, though I try, how can I carry on?
Arguably the greatest pop song ever written .

Goddamnit, the synth in the bridge before the chorus.... that is some killer shit even for toady. It just rolls in so effortlessly and it instantly lets you know that something badass is gonna happen.

The more closely I listen to ABBA, the more I realize those four were operating at a level way beyond what most musicians ever are. Such complexity and arrangement!
really? complex? how much music have you heard in your life. Listen to this from 55 seconds in to the end, .. fast forward a little in to about 55 to skip the first part. ruclips.net/video/vZDlZwKD4bs/видео.html This is what Complex is in modern music. as for old music its J S Bach.

I really agree with you. In this song, for example, there are elements of baroque .. and it has two different consecutive chords. The piano theme at the beginning and end is genial.
My favourite ABBA song. It’s a masterpiece of pop.
Certain songs are just too good to describe and this is one

This is a GREAT song. Excellent keyboard riff into the chorus. Great harmony. Great dynamics between verses and chorus. This song is a masterpiece from beginning to end.

I appreciate ABBA more now than I did in the 70’s & 80’s. I was heavy into rock music, but I realize now how important ABBA was, and IS !
@@zyrrhos Excellent! Yes, nostalgia! Hello Portugal!
They made pop, but their music was well-constructed pop with unworldly singers. That is why it holds up

I loved SOS in the 70's it made me feel so good. It was amazing growing up with ABBA.
As a swede its very nice to visit different clips with ABBA , not just only for watching the videos, also to read the comments from people all over the world about what they meant to you. Yes, it makes me proud and it gives a good feeling.
Saw them at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, Australia. I still have the ticket :)

@@pmberry
Right said Paul! :)
This song oversizing the value of the so called "pop music" - and making that "classical music"....
The perfection is in the music, and that's eternal. The age-effect irrelevant, as we can hear Mozart as classical, even in his age he was just pop....
And it never will. Pop perfection.
It's 2024 right now and I'm still digging it. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
One of the greats! A rocking pop tune for sure.
Anybody else make the critical error of playing one ABBA track hours ago..... and still playing them now. 😁
What error? They're that Damn Good! So Yeah.
Best female harmonies, even better than Mamas and Papas....just enough to beat them, it's close though
Doesn’t sound like an error, more like a gift :)
Yes, right now 🤘😁
Only playing one is a critical error
The slight imperfections, the naivety in the English lyrics + the accents just add to the genuine melancholy. This is a pop masterpiece - perfect arrangement, perfect performance. Stunning.
It has two different choruses, one after the other?
Dustshoe Your posts have something scientific about them. They are stringently beautiful in a way.. Ever considered writing in a scholarly journal? :)
Even John Lennon said that this was one of his favorite songs! That’s proof to show how many people love ABBA out in the whole world. I mean Queen Elizabeth’s favorite song is Dancing Queen!
As well as Princess Diana's. I also believe Queen Silvia of Sweden.
And John McCain’s. If there’s one thing liberals and conservatives can passionately agree on, it’s that ABBA is the GOAT
Well that went well with Beatles song "Help"
According to bassist Glen Matlock, the intro to the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" is based on the "bomp-BOMP-bomp-BOMP" piano line in this tune.
ABBA once heard one of John Lennon's songs and said, that's not too bad!

I think there’s something wrong with me. I’m a metalhead and I’ve been stuck in an ABBA loop for two days....
There's nothing wrong with acknowledging great musicianship. ABBA were brilliantly skilled musicians.
Most metal musicians respect ABBA and metal songwriters have created riffs based on pretty much all ABBA's tunes. ze melodies.. And pretty much all metalheads that i know binge some ABBA once in a while, or do it regularly to get some variety from whatever metal they listen to. If ABBA doesn't get you interested within the first verse, they'll have you absolutely *hooked* the moment they launch into the chorus.
It's the 12-string that really does it.
Best intro ever made!
@Anni frid Lyngstad put asterisks on both sides of the word
It's what my mum called their "thump and tinkle" (she liked them): they have a gentle, tuneful verse, then a punchy chorus. (I think Chiquitita is probably the best example, but they're nearly all of that pattern. Though they can do other styles - instrumental like Arrival, heavy rock like Does Your Mother Know/Hole in your Soul/Sole). But the verse and chorus sums them up best, I think. Even my favourite, Thank You for the music.
