I am back with another story time. I've told you all in the past that a spent a few years working as a homehealth nurse. Homehealth is very near and dear to my heart because I connected with my patients on a different level.
Some days are easier than others when working as a homehealth nurse. Sit back and have a good laugh at some of my mishaps while working in homehealth.

That’s why you are a nurse. Naturally nice… just a decent person. I did almost same thing when I started home health. I admitted a patient with breast cancer. She had a jp drain and on assessing, I knew it was infected. Pt lived alone and it was already late(7 pm ish) to call any friend or family. I saw my aunt in the woman. I offered to drive her to the hospital. I drove from Inglewood to city of hope( over 60 miles back and forth. Wew!!! Never told anybody and I was at peace with my action.
Wow. We need more nurses like you. Thank you for doing that! I live near city of hope and know that it could be quite a bit of a drive and most times with traffic too.
I did 9 years as a home health nurse. I loved it but left because I needed a change and was burned out mentally. Two years I did case management and that was my favorite part!! Like Kendra said forming boundaries when your new can be hard and sticking to the rule of the "do not do X" is easier said than done. I've done things which I've justified as being a good human being that I wouldn't tell anyone else at the time (except that one coworker who I know wouldn't snitch and is the same way as me) that I know is looked down upon. No regrets! Buying someone food/cooking a hot meal, shoveling their car off in the winter and the driveway so their spouse could bring them to an appointment, grabbing a coffee and a paper, or a gallon of milk and some bread or prescriptions at the pharmacy. Little things that go above the call of duty to help the people in my community. Nothing that would jeopardize my license but you know the things they tell you when your hired you shouldn't do.

I'm trying to escape 12 years of home health to case management. I've been unemployed since failing dialysis training 3 months ago and feel lost. I know I can go back to HH, and playing with AI as a HH tool is almost tempting, but the idea of facing the same problems, the same BS metrics, & the same unpaid work with no prospects crushes my soul. I am hesitant to shell out $1800 for a CCM certificate before finding a job. I have only seen 2 training positions open for CM and have no idea what the competition is like. Do you have any advice on where to look for CM experience? Or who might hire a home health BSN?
I'm a newer nurse who left the hospital, still shaking! I do know this about HD, you're experience (in center) is very dependent on the clinic. I've worked in 5 over the years (one as a nurse). Bailed on the RN one in 4 months. If you like it don't give up though. One employee can ruin a small clinic.
@@cartermclaughlin2908 Hospitals up in New England are constantly looking for CMs. I did it for a year and was bored out of my MIND. But the pay is good, hours fantastic, and not everyone is anti sitting like me. There are many contracts too for CMs. It is a longggg orientation! Good luck!

I got chased by a potbelly pig at a visit in the middle of Philadelphia. The adventures of home health. I usually ask about dogs or cats forgot to ask about the pig.

I have sat for NCLEX Exam for the 9th time now and still failed , i guess licence isn't meant for people like me🤦♂️💔😥
@@dionjoyner6973 So sorry to hear you guys complain deeply of failing the exam. But I will assure you that Nclex exam won't be a problem to you anymore,if you work with someone like Miss ELISABETH HELEN. She help me through my exam and I made it through. 💪❤️🎉🤗
Really, you'll know her Too? I even thought I was the only one she has helped walk through the fears and falls of NCLEX Exam, Miss ELISABETH has brought me out of the trenches and to a better living, I encourage repeat test taker to work with her.
Wow!!!! congrats and thanks for the encouragement words for all the people who have not take the NCLEX yet. yes, it is a crazy test for sure. I also used Miss ELISABETH HELEN review material's. - I studied for 1 week and my test shut off at question 78. I cried too when I got my results. PASS

I have given two patients rides home in my career. One was a college student who got transferred to our ER from the town where I live for an emergent ultrasound of his scrotum. The small Hospital there didn't have ultrasound on the weekend or something. He was okay and happened to be going home at the same time I was driving home, a 45 minute drive.
The other was a pretty rustic guy who didn't have money or a social support system. He lived in a dilapidated trailer in a dilapidated trailer park in town.

Oh my goodness! That was nice of you to pick him up. I did home health for a while too and I actually enjoyed it. The patients were really appreciative and I never had any real issues. And yes some houses..I would only bring the bare necessities in so I wouldn’t bring any critters home with me.
The good thing is, I was assigned near the beach so I would take my lunch breaks at the beach and chart.
I felt bad, his dad kept scolding him🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. I was being a decent human being, lol
As a home health RN I can truly relate. Everyday is something new and I have stories about my work days that are hard to believe.
Home health is it’s own specialty.

That’s what most people say. They don’t want to be in the homes of other people. I say, I’m not moving in with them, I’m there for a short while, lol

I've done homecare for a couple of months now, and it can be terrifying sometimes. Thank you for always inspiring us. This reminds us that whatever might happen to us as nurses, is part of our experience , so we should not freak out too much, but be still and keep learning.
Fully understand your stories, Kendra! Worked home health for >40 yrs! One does experience some interesting scenarios over time. But you are a very devoted person, and you tend to dive in with all fours!! So thankful you're recovering, health wise. Nursing is great, but one can burn out very quickly! Take care of YOURSELF. I'm over her crying 😂😂😂 @ ur stories. I'm mad the lady ended up on the floor. Only the worst things can happen when u go out of ur way 2 help some1 n their home. I want 2 do home care on the side, but I'm too damn nice. I would definitely have 2 set boundaries. We need more of these stories.

You were right, you had me rolling! Kudos to you for handling those problems with such integrity and care. I did a 2 week rotation, during nursing school, in home health. I was very uncomfortable being in homes I was not familiar with, I prefer the controlled chaos of the hospital setting.
Sis that scenario is crazy 😂 like fr but at the same am glad u had that compassion and kindness to get it done even though it was next day ❤God bless your heart ❤❤

I worked in the field as a Mental Health Professional for about 20 years. The stories I could tell. Pet owners were the ABSOLUTE worst! I am coming to provide a service not interact with a animal. I finally had to start saying that I am allergic to cats/dogs.
Yup, I know what you mean. Some people would get so upset when I asked to put their pet away. 🤦🏾♀️
You did the right thing..the Dad most likely can't see well enough to drive except in major daylight. The slowdown in reflexes is something else that changes with age, making driving uncomfortable during school dismissal time and rush hour. When you see families living together they are dependent on each other for various and different reasons, sometimes there's self sacrifice involved and it is a beautiful thing. Bless your heart for doing home health care. I did home health for a while and I loved the patients but couldn't stand all the charting involved. I can honestly say I have been from the trailer house to the penthouse in that job.

aa.....(Grenadian dialect) Gul ....you had me dyyyyinnggg with the second story. ..but home health , especially in home health that line will always get crossed some how especially if you have a sincere heart. you brought back a specific experience with a recovered drug addict couple in their 60s , one with COPD and the other on hospice from the projects. They were barely surviving smh . i will forever cherish that experience

Thanks Kendra for sharing really helps. As a new grad though home health is hard. I once heard of a new grad who gave twice as much vancomycin to a hospice baby. Yeah one should have experience, and high integrity to be able to go into that speciality. Well done. Keep doing g.ds work.
Setting boundaries is one of my struggles as new nurse ,I always wanted to help others but sometimes we have limitations too .we can’t do everything.thank you Kendra for sharing I can see you have beautiful heart keep doing what you’re doing,God will pay you for it
After 13 years I've learned the hard way. I went above & beyond...still lied on me, got my debit card stolen, beaten, abused, get spit on...I'm very careful. I protect myself peace at all cost!

As a new nurse, it’s difficult to set boundaries but you will learn overtime. Prioritize yourself first.

☺ You're a brave soul for taking the risks you did to treat patients at home. It seems the second incident with the elderly woman may have helped you to deal with unexpected things that are inevitable in your line of work.

Listen…hats off to you!!! I’ve had to go in to homes as a public health nurse to do a face to face assessment for in home help for clients. Not a head to toe, skin touching assessment like in the hospital, but mainly a questionnaire. I learned that going in to others homes is a NO for me!!!! Pissy cats and dogs that want to jump on you and people think that is okay…it’s NOT okay! Not to mention some homes are just nasty and I would refuse to sit down in most cases even after their 20 offers for me to sit on a wet stained couch. Now a hard surface chair or wood chair…I might. But yeah, I’ve heard horror stories of visiting nurses. I happily applaud any nurse that does home health or hospice or patient care in the confines of a persons home because I just can’t…

Hi I am a new subscriber. I currently have Home Health but it's been very inconsistent with nursing and Physical Therapy and HHA.
My vitals have actually gotten worse since HH and I've had 2 visits to the ER since I started getting HH. I did see a good nurse last week who has been nursing for only a year. I asked the agency for a new PT and HHA by talking to a Adm Assistant today. Should I be doing anything else to ensure I get the services my PCP ordered and that I need? Thank you! You are indeed my sister in nursing! I worked in home health for appx 5 dollars an hour by the time I figured in the time-to-money ratio. Between fixing computers, taking patients to the bank, picking them up at the Doctor, searching for hearing aides, and just sitting and listening. So many elderly are neglected by their children and are very lonely. It's heartbreaking. I did many 10 pm incontinent visits because the alternative was a paraplegic sitting in urine overnight. You definitely become even more attached to patients in their homes! The story of the cat I could relate to, as I run medical missions in the wilds of Africa. I had chickens, goats, and donkeys casually walking between me and my patient's IV starts!. Once I had to start my own IV line and medication because I came down with malaria. A group of appx 100 HUGE steers ran through the camp, toppling tents and destroying our water filtration system, I thought I was dead! But no, they just ran on either side of me, as I turned around the IV line and bag was hanging off the horns of an 8-foot-tall stampeding beast. You can't make this stuff up! :) God bless you.

@@user-ri4zh4ll6m If you can swing it, go! The African people are the sweetest people! Very strong, not at all entitled, very happy, and gracious hosts. TBH it's actually hard to come back to USA. It will set you up in life to live gratefully and to appreciate things we all take for granted. When you hit rough patches, you realize we live so well here, and you avoid the "woe is me syndrome." Definitely changed my outlook on life. I hope you get to go. Blessings to you! 💖

Home health can be challenging that’s for sure. When I did there were some aspects of that I liked but for the most part it was exhausting.

Thank for your channel and your stories! I am from Canada. I wonder why wouldn't you be allowed to temporarily insert a peripheral line to give the first dose of Abx? Here our algorithm would dictate to insert an IV.
I love that you have such a caring and generous heart. However, I'm wondering from a liability standpoint, what would have happened if you had gotten into a car accident while transporting your patient back home without your company knowing? What if he had been injured? What if you had been injured? Would you have been covered under your company's work comp?
The amazing thing is, none of that happened. God is very kind to me.

Worked Hospice during my nursing career. THAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT AND REWARDING WORK EVER .
That story is so sad, especially knowing his parents were old and still caring for their grown son

Are these jobs good for if you need to fit in your day between 9-3? Then do the rest of the charting later in the day? How many patients they make you visit per day or per week? Does it work for people who have busy families lots of children kind of schedule? Or they try to make you work long extended hours?
how many years of experience do you need to have to work home health? and in what units? I work telemetry is that sufficient?
This pic-line story is just a day in the life of home health. In home caregiver here, and nothing surprises me.
