When Home Health Nursing Goes Wrong

- Hey Y'all
I am back with another story time. I've told you all in the past that a spent a few years working as a homehealth nurse. Homehealth is very near and dear to my heart because I connected with my patients on a different level.
Some days are easier than others when working as a homehealth nurse. Sit back and have a good laugh at some of my mishaps while working in homehealth.
#homehealth #homehealthnurse #homehealthnursing
Me thinking of picking up some PRN home health, now deleting my half filled job application. 😂
No! Try it, you might like it.
That’s why you are a nurse. Naturally nice… just a decent person. I did almost same thing when I started home health. I admitted a patient with breast cancer. She had a jp drain and on assessing, I knew it was infected. Pt lived alone and it was already late(7 pm ish) to call any friend or family. I saw my aunt in the woman. I offered to drive her to the hospital. I drove from Inglewood to city of hope( over 60 miles back and forth. Wew!!! Never told anybody and I was at peace with my action.
Wow. We need more nurses like you. Thank you for doing that! I live near city of hope and know that it could be quite a bit of a drive and most times with traffic too.
I got chased by a potbelly pig at a visit in the middle of Philadelphia. The adventures of home health. I usually ask about dogs or cats forgot to ask about the pig.
Say what?!?! No way! How did that turn out???
Hilarious 😂😂
😂😂😂
I did 9 years as a home health nurse. I loved it but left because I needed a change and was burned out mentally. Two years I did case management and that was my favorite part!! Like Kendra said forming boundaries when your new can be hard and sticking to the rule of the "do not do X" is easier said than done. I've done things which I've justified as being a good human being that I wouldn't tell anyone else at the time (except that one coworker who I know wouldn't snitch and is the same way as me) that I know is looked down upon. No regrets! Buying someone food/cooking a hot meal, shoveling their car off in the winter and the driveway so their spouse could bring them to an appointment, grabbing a coffee and a paper, or a gallon of milk and some bread or prescriptions at the pharmacy. Little things that go above the call of duty to help the people in my community. Nothing that would jeopardize my license but you know the things they tell you when your hired you shouldn't do.
Stacy you are simply and amazing human! May the blessings for these kind acts trickle down your generation and more ❤️
I'm trying to escape 12 years of home health to case management. I've been unemployed since failing dialysis training 3 months ago and feel lost. I know I can go back to HH, and playing with AI as a HH tool is almost tempting, but the idea of facing the same problems, the same BS metrics, & the same unpaid work with no prospects crushes my soul. I am hesitant to shell out $1800 for a CCM certificate before finding a job. I have only seen 2 training positions open for CM and have no idea what the competition is like. Do you have any advice on where to look for CM experience? Or who might hire a home health BSN?
I'm a newer nurse who left the hospital, still shaking! I do know this about HD, you're experience (in center) is very dependent on the clinic. I've worked in 5 over the years (one as a nurse). Bailed on the RN one in 4 months. If you like it don't give up though. One employee can ruin a small clinic.
@@cartermclaughlin2908 Hospitals up in New England are constantly looking for CMs. I did it for a year and was bored out of my MIND. But the pay is good, hours fantastic, and not everyone is anti sitting like me. There are many contracts too for CMs. It is a longggg orientation! Good luck!
I have given two patients rides home in my career. One was a college student who got transferred to our ER from the town where I live for an emergent ultrasound of his scrotum. The small Hospital there didn't have ultrasound on the weekend or something. He was okay and happened to be going home at the same time I was driving home, a 45 minute drive.
The other was a pretty rustic guy who didn't have money or a social support system. He lived in a dilapidated trailer in a dilapidated trailer park in town.
You sound like you have a big heart!❤
Omg not the PICC line!! That's insane...I would be panicking so badly LOL. Wow
Lol!!! I did panic, for a quick minute😳😳😳. I regained composure quick though, lol
You offered that help to pick him up because nursing is your calling and thats some of the above and beyond stuff that we do...
I think you’re right, thank you!
Girl I had to laugh...I am sorry....the way you said it...I am a nurse and I can relate
Girrrrllllll😭😭😭
You're a great storyteller Kendra!! Thank you for sharing your home health adventures 🙏🏽
I appreciate that! Thank you so much Dahlia ❤️
Im so happy to hear you gave the patient that ride back home. You are definitely one of the good ones, keep up the wonderful work you been doing Kendra, loving to hear your experiences.
😭😭😭 Thank you! I hope he is doing well.
@Monica Just say "I haven't passed yet." Don't take it as a failure but see it as a learning opportunity. There is a lot of power in "Yet"; you are telling yourself that you will get there and that your eyes and heart are still fixed on your goal.
Well, I've taken the exams for the 4th time now and still didn't succeed, i wonder how those who succeeded did it. 😭💔
Took my NCLEX -RN test last week and passed with 145 questions on my first try!! Huge Thanks to Miss ELISABETH HELEN, she is a game changer
I have sat for NCLEX Exam for the 9th time now and still failed , i guess licence isn't meant for people like me🤦♂️💔😥
Home health nurse here 16 yrs and counting. Gonna write a book on my experiences…
You should, I’m sure it’ll be amazing 🤩
I'd buy that book!
You just verified why I never want to go inside a patient's home 😭😳
Lol. Some patients’ homes are disastrous
I would do the same thing! Lady you are the rock star!!
Fully understand your stories, Kendra! Worked home health for >40 yrs! One does experience some interesting scenarios over time. But you are a very devoted person, and you tend to dive in with all fours!! So thankful you're recovering, health wise. Nursing is great, but one can burn out very quickly! Take care of YOURSELF. A follower- gcb
Thank you so much. I appreciate you
I'm over her crying 😂😂😂 @ ur stories. I'm mad the lady ended up on the floor. Only the worst things can happen when u go out of ur way 2 help some1 n their home. I want 2 do home care on the side, but I'm too damn nice. I would definitely have 2 set boundaries. We need more of these stories.
Lmao!!! I could’ve passed out and been in the floor with her, lol.
Please share more… I’m laughing so hard 😂😂😂😂
Girl!!!!!
Oh my goodness! That was nice of you to pick him up. I did home health for a while too and I actually enjoyed it. The patients were really appreciative and I never had any real issues. And yes some houses..I would only bring the bare necessities in so I wouldn’t bring any critters home with me.
The good thing is, I was assigned near the beach so I would take my lunch breaks at the beach and chart.
I felt bad, his dad kept scolding him🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. I was being a decent human being, lol
As a home health RN I can truly relate. Everyday is something new and I have stories about my work days that are hard to believe.
Home health is it’s own specialty.
The home being dirty scares me the most especially those having wild pets. You did a great job for picking up from your patient. keep this series coming! Am enjoying all your nursing experience video.
That’s what most people say. They don’t want to be in the homes of other people. I say, I’m not moving in with them, I’m there for a short while, lol
I've done homecare for a couple of months now, and it can be terrifying sometimes. Thank you for always inspiring us. This reminds us that whatever might happen to us as nurses, is part of our experience , so we should not freak out too much, but be still and keep learning.
I loved this! I’ve been a home health nurse for many years, and so could relate to all this. I say never a dull moment. Lol Keep these coming. Your a great storyteller❤
Sometimes I feel like I’m rambling, so thank you for the reassurance. I really enjoyed home health but the documentation was too much, the Oasis 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
You are amazing! I Love your stories keep posting ❤😂
Sis that scenario is crazy 😂 like fr but at the same am glad u had that compassion and kindness to get it done even though it was next day ❤God bless your heart ❤❤
You truly did have the best of intentions in both stories. So glad everything worked out & you didn't quit after such scary scenarios early on in home health nursing.
Kendra you’re so damn funny!! I love listening to your stories 🤣😂🤣
I’m doing prerequisites to do an accelerated BSN and I must say that I love your videos. The videos are very informative and educational. Sending you much blessings
Can y’all imagine if she did not call in previously for that PRN visit.
You are a good person Kendra. And God sees your heart
Girrrlllll, lol. I know, thank God always!!!! Amen!!!
You were right, you had me rolling! Kudos to you for handling those problems with such integrity and care. I did a 2 week rotation, during nursing school, in home health. I was very uncomfortable being in homes I was not familiar with, I prefer the controlled chaos of the hospital setting.
Thank you for sharing your stories, home health is not easy. Thank you for all you do!
I’m cracking up! I’ve been waiting for this video.
I love hearing your stories. I also love the integrity
I try! Thank you so much ❤️
Great story, thank you for sharing.
I have been considering doing home health and I loved this video! Please keep these videos coming! ❤
I will Nikki, thank you!
You have done it all. Home health is something else.
Yes I loved my home patients. Some of their homes made me cry every time I left. Definitely understand that emotional attachment. Keep up the good work.
It’s so hard to say bye to them. 😭😭😭
aa.....(Grenadian dialect) Gul ....you had me dyyyyinnggg with the second story. ..but home health , especially in home health that line will always get crossed some how especially if you have a sincere heart. you brought back a specific experience with a recovered drug addict couple in their 60s , one with COPD and the other on hospice from the projects. They were barely surviving smh . i will forever cherish that experience
Im at work right now dying at the 2nd story 😂😂 im dead omgg di way i burst out laughing . Great content Nursey ❤
Glad you had a laugh 😂
Thank you for sharing such a terrified personal story . I am thinking to dive into home NP as a new grad it was so helpful story. you are a amazing nurse!!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORY
This video was the best ever!!!!! Your stories are so funny!!!!! Keep it coming!!!!!
I’ve got more, lol.
Omg Kendra. These stories are giving me a flashback of my 11 years in home care. Those lines are blurred girl!!! I'm telling you! Lol this is so funny but these stories are so real!!! I can't even. God bless your heart. Cheers to the best years!
Where do you work now since you left home care
Girl this video was SO enjoyable. I was cackling throughout. Damn cats be unpredictable. And that’s something I would do picking him up and bringing him home. Regarding Nana- OMGG😂😂😂😂 no good deed goes unpunished am I right? Ooooh LORDT. This was great. Keep them coming-you’re a great story teller 🤌🏽
Hahahah you made me laugh!!! You called her Nana, that’s what I call my elderly ladies😁😁😁. When I tell you my heart skipped some beats😨😨😨😨
Wow, a truly memorable first admission!
Thanks Kendra for sharing really helps. As a new grad though home health is hard. I once heard of a new grad who gave twice as much vancomycin to a hospice baby. Yeah one should have experience, and high integrity to be able to go into that speciality. Well done. Keep doing g.ds work.
Oh my goodness, you’re such a blessing Kendra. You poor thing. I felt it when you said you were mortified and your heart was racing. I felt it girl. I’m so glad your patient was alright and that the family was nice. Please continue to show your integrity in all you do. 💕
Thank you so much J!
You have a beautiful heart & that’s why you became a nurse. That’s why I became a nurse ! We will go out our way for our patients ♥️
Awww, Jill, thank you so much! ❤️❤️
I love these nursing stories!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I LOVE your storytimes 😊
😆😆😆. Thank you!
My motivator. Just started my RN program, currently an LPN. You really motivate me sis
Hi there, fellow nurse, congrats on starting your RN program!!! I’ll try to keep putting content on that is useful.
Bless your heart for doing home health care. I did home health for a while and I loved the patients but couldn't stand all the charting involved. I can honestly say I have been from the trailer house to the penthouse in that job.
Yes!!! The documentation is what did me in, other than that, I loved it.
Funny stories!! Keep them coming!
Hahaha thank you!
Honeyyyyyy this is why I quit in the first day of my home health job. Too much nursing trauma for meh!! Lol!!
😂😂😂😂 I cannot with you!!! Omg, I’m laughing so hard.
@@KendraRN I tried. I had done home hospice for 6 years. So I thought maybe home health was different and better. No ma’am. Too soon I guess. 😆😆😆
Bless your heart ❤
Thank you Patricia, have a great weekend
I worked in the field as a Mental Health Professional for about 20 years. The stories I could tell. Pet owners were the ABSOLUTE worst! I am coming to provide a service not interact with a animal. I finally had to start saying that I am allergic to cats/dogs.
Yup, I know what you mean. Some people would get so upset when I asked to put their pet away. 🤦🏾♀️
You did the right thing..the Dad most likely can't see well enough to drive except in major daylight. The slowdown in reflexes is something else that changes with age, making driving uncomfortable during school dismissal time and rush hour. When you see families living together they are dependent on each other for various and different reasons, sometimes there's self sacrifice involved and it is a beautiful thing. Love all your vids Kendra.
Awwww thank you for this amazing insight! You put it all together so wonderfully! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this❤️
I love your channel ❤️ thank you
Bella, thank you
Hi Kendra omgosh tooo funny!! That would be me, all tbe least expectant things happen to me too 🤣
You have a beautiful heart, God has you, good will come back to you fir sure.
Love your channel 🙏❤️
Hi Kathy!!! Thank you so much.
Thanks!
Love your videos Kendra. I will graduating the PN program and starting the RN bridge program. I can’t wait to join the field of nursing.
Congrats on your transition. Thank you for watching 🥰
I absolutely love your videos. You aren't afraid to share the good, bad, and ugly in this profession. You make me so excited to start my accelerated nursing program in September!
Hey Mitchell, thank you so much and thanks for watching! Congrats on getting into the program, keep me posted!
@@KendraRN I sure will!
I love your stories. As someone aspiring to become a nurse it helps me alot.
I’ll be sharing more. Thank you so much!
@@KendraRN Great thanks 😊
I am a home health OTA and I understand , I have so many stories .You and I are alike , always going the extra mile for our patients . I enjoyed your story time .
It’s hard not to, my conscience won’t let me do different. Thank you! ❤️
Yea,
When you have a good heart, it doesn't mean things wont go wrong. Sometimes it does, but you will surely win!!!😊🤗
That seems to be the case! Thank you ❤️
Listen…hats off to you!!! I’ve had to go in to homes as a public health nurse to do a face to face assessment for in home help for clients. Not a head to toe, skin touching assessment like in the hospital, but mainly a questionnaire. I learned that going in to others homes is a NO for me!!!! Pissy cats and dogs that want to jump on you and people think that is okay…it’s NOT okay! Not to mention some homes are just nasty and I would refuse to sit down in most cases even after their 20 offers for me to sit on a wet stained couch. Now a hard surface chair or wood chair…I might. But yeah, I’ve heard horror stories of visiting nurses. I happily applaud any nurse that does home health or hospice or patient care in the confines of a persons home because I just can’t…
❤❤
You are indeed my sister in nursing! I worked in home health for appx 5 dollars an hour by the time I figured in the time-to-money ratio. Between fixing computers, taking patients to the bank, picking them up at the Doctor, searching for hearing aides, and just sitting and listening. So many elderly are neglected by their children and are very lonely. It's heartbreaking. I did many 10 pm incontinent visits because the alternative was a paraplegic sitting in urine overnight. You definitely become even more attached to patients in their homes! The story of the cat I could relate to, as I run medical missions in the wilds of Africa. I had chickens, goats, and donkeys casually walking between me and my patient's IV starts!. Once I had to start my own IV line and medication because I came down with malaria. A group of appx 100 HUGE steers ran through the camp, toppling tents and destroying our water filtration system, I thought I was dead! But no, they just ran on either side of me, as I turned around the IV line and bag was hanging off the horns of an 8-foot-tall stampeding beast. You can't make this stuff up! :) God bless you.
Rn here so interesting,it’s my dream to do nursing work in Africa one day
@@user-ri4zh4ll6m If you can swing it, go! The African people are the sweetest people! Very strong, not at all entitled, very happy, and gracious hosts. TBH it's actually hard to come back to USA. It will set you up in life to live gratefully and to appreciate things we all take for granted. When you hit rough patches, you realize we live so well here, and you avoid the "woe is me syndrome." Definitely changed my outlook on life. I hope you get to go. Blessings to you! 💖
@@user-ri4zh4ll6m I agree, try it, it is really fun. And you can certainly set better boundaries than I did. 💖
I love your home health story ❤ Please share some more home health stories
I’ll talk about home health some more🤣🤣🤣
@@KendraRN thank you
Girl! That second story made me scream lol 😂. I’m considering a home health nurse position here in Baltimore and you are making me nervous 😩 😊
Go for it! You have to try it, don’t listen to anyone. The documentation is annoying but the autonomy and making your own schedule is great. Let me know.
@@KendraRN Thank you, I think I might have try it out.
Oh my 😮 those stories are crazy but things happen to us as nurses ass the time!
Literally I need forgiveness for how hard I laughed as you told the second story. I pray from my chest nothing like this ever happens to me or my patients. Whew Jesus please keep me 😅
Wow what a story !
☺ You're a brave soul for taking the risks you did to treat patients at home. It seems the second incident with the elderly woman may have helped you to deal with unexpected things that are inevitable in your line of work.
🙃 thank you!
I've been in home care 30 years, 20 as a registered nurse. I can appreciate these stories!!
🙃🙃🙃 thank you!
Wow
Setting boundaries is one of my struggles as new nurse ,I always wanted to help others but sometimes we have limitations too .we can’t do everything.thank you Kendra for sharing I can see you have beautiful heart keep doing what you’re doing,God will pay you for it
After 13 years I've learned the hard way. I went above & beyond...still lied on me, got my debit card stolen, beaten, abused, get spit on...I'm very careful. I protect myself peace at all cost!
Oh no! Was this in home health or hospital?
As a new nurse, it’s difficult to set boundaries but you will learn overtime. Prioritize yourself first.
Home health can be challenging that’s for sure. When I did there were some aspects of that I liked but for the most part it was exhausting.
You will meet some characters in this field.😂
For sure!
I am crying 🤣 How did I know this second story was going to end in a fall?! I do home infusion now and I agree, lots of flexibility but lots of nonsense lol
😆😆😆 poor nana, I’m sure she’s passed on now. Very sweet lady.
😂😂 when you said "did her wheel chair not just flip and now she's on the floor"??
I'm sorry but i cracked up laughing. Not because the patient fell back, but i just imagined what you were probably thinking as she's laying on the floor. Lol
All in a day's work in Home Health Care..🌼😝💓😂🙌🏻
Hi I am a new subscriber. I currently have Home Health but it's been very inconsistent with nursing and Physical Therapy and HHA.
My vitals have actually gotten worse since HH and I've had 2 visits to the ER since I started getting HH. I did see a good nurse last week who has been nursing for only a year. I asked the agency for a new PT and HHA by talking to a Adm Assistant today. Should I be doing anything else to ensure I get the services my PCP ordered and that I need? Thank you! I've really been enjoying your videos. God bless you!
We are literally everything when it comes to work, my patients ask me for things even I don’t know I can or should be doing 😂😂😂😂
Hilarious dad had a driving in the city schedule…I get it
Dad wanted no parts😆😆
That story is so sad, especially knowing his parents were old and still caring for their grown son
Glad you decided to disclose to the mom.
1000 years to get a hold of the orthopedic surgeon. Girl, you tell the truth, and the truth is so funny. I thought the cat was gonna put a hole in the picc line with it's claws, lol.
I'VE been in those situations I know the feeling
❤️
Worked Hospice during my nursing career. THAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT AND REWARDING WORK EVER .
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hey Honey!!! Thank you!!!
I get you 100%
Oh my word the PICC line came out 🙈
Chillleeee, tell me about it 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️😭
More stories please
Usually older people have different rooms to get better sleep :) I’m opting in on that bc my b/f snores so bad lol
Right, gotta assess that site. Can't go off of another assessment, ethically and clinically.
Absolutely!
I love that you have such a caring and generous heart. However, I'm wondering from a liability standpoint, what would have happened if you had gotten into a car accident while transporting your patient back home without your company knowing? What if he had been injured? What if you had been injured? Would you have been covered under your company's work comp?
The amazing thing is, none of that happened. God is very kind to me.
This pic-line story is just a day in the life of home health. In home caregiver here, and nothing surprises me.
Have you heard of Murphy's law? It basically says whatever could go wrong does go wrong...but your stories both had a happily ever after ❤
The things I did nasa HH nurse🤦🏻♀️ Fortunately no consequences but I’ve given pts rides, made grocery trips for them and have delivered meds🤦🏻♀️ I couldn’t not do it. The had no one else🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
That is the thing, it becomes a moral issue. May you be blessed.
Great video, question… what would you have done different? Like for the new grads that are going into home health? Thank you 😊
Lmao not the wheel chair flipping backwards! Sorry that happened
How you gonna say sorry that happened after the LMAO 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Omg, the horror.
@@KendraRN Lmaoo nah you told it comically, but I can only have imagine how you feel, so im also sorry that happened. I work in nursing too so I understand how bizarre situation happens , and how you as the nurse being the one to report such incident . I’m borrowing your word “ mortified “ I was weak 🤣
❤️❤️🕊️🕊️💚🌿
Hi there! Thank you again, you’re too kind ❤️
LMFAOOOO na I’m crying . Cause that’s something that would happen to me after I decide to do a good deed
Lmao!!! It’s always the good hearted people getting screwed 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
