Thank you everyone for enjoying the demonstration. My pleasure. The paper is 140lb cold press.. Variety of brushes, which are mentioned in the video. Hope we can meet and share the Watercolor Journey together some day or an online workshop. Stay safe. Sincerely, David
I know this is an older video but if you see this, Thank You!! I've been in a rut the last 6+ months with painting and this helped me remember to loosen up and enjoy the process. I'm on my 2nd go(loved my 1st attempt and just wanted to go again!) with this and am using a couple brushes I haven't touched in months! I've been hitting a wall trying to learn better portrait painting and this is just what I didn't know I needed. Thank you so much, you're incredibly talented, my friend! I hope you're well and look forward to your other videos!!!
Well, amateur here. Cheap, horrible paints, brushes, my paper buckled and fell apart from all the water spattering. Mine looks absolutely nothing like yours, but I'll keep trying. Better equipment on the way. I'm not giving up. It was fun.
To prevent paper from buckling, use a block (don’t remove paper from block until painting is done) or for loose paper, you need to “stretch” it first (submerge entire sheet in water, lay towel out on table or other flat surface, put wet paper sheet on towel, cover with another towel, but heavy books or something on paper, and let dry). I find blocks, while a little more expensive, much more convenient as you don’t have to do the prime/stretch prep process.
I am in the same boat as you. Cannot afford expensive paints, brushes, or paper. Very frustrating and at times I get very defeated. I have to walk away and come back at a later date. Would be nice to see these artists do paintings with generic cheap tools!
Thank you, David - and thanks to Cheap Joe's Art for sponsoring this tutorial. I've wondered how to get the mist effect, and you demonstrated it brilliantly!
WOW wow wow. Just found your channel through search for mist. My God you are talented.🤩 I had no chance but to subscribe to your channel with both my accounts. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent with the world.🙏💜
I love how you created the Mist in your painting. I'm new to painting, looking for ways to paint and hit the jackpot, watching you do this. I'm a photographer and love to take misty photos. Now I'll work on doing Misty paintings, working with your style of doing it. Thanks for sharing I watched this October 2023. A few years after you filmed this and thank God it's still online for others to watch and learn.
Absolutely brilliant!! I love the mist effect and you explain how to accomplish it with such an easy to follow technique! I can't wait to try it out myself!!
Thank you David. Loved this. I’m working on a painting right now where I can utilize this technique. BTW (full confession, I did not read all 127 comments to see if this has been asked and answered), I assume when you are spraying and drying that your dryer is on for more than a fraction of a second 😬 Do you dry until completely dry and then re spray? Thanks again…John Monster
Thank you for a most excellent tutorial! I appreciate all the instruction you included. But, what I really appreciate is that you did not include annoying music that is so distracting. This is a technique I will be trying. God bless!
David, you hooked me up with my childhood love. As a kid I could spend hrs. making pict. with 1000's of dots, I always wanted to do this kind of stuff. Our 3rd child recieved all my hrs. he is truly an artist at age of 20. After looking at 3 of your clips I am considering following up. Thank you David.
Thank You David for being so generous for sharing your techniques that are yours! I am a huge fan of yours! Awesome painting!!!!!! Keep doing your demos!!!!!!
Where can I purchase the Dynasty 1827 brush? Amazon doesn’t have it in stock and the other two sites are Canada and London, costly shipping. I know I can use other brushes but I like that one. Great demo!!
I've watched many tuturials on mist searching on how to do that whispy mist effect. Finally you have taught me how. Thank you so very much. For sharing your talent, your skills and your time.
It is such a pleasure to me watching your painting process, David! Thank you for sharing your talent in this amazing video! Not an artist, but a wizard❣️😍🙏🏼
Thank you very much for sharing your technique, David, you and your videos are so informative and inspiring; and the results are stunning and rewarding! Certainly improved my paintings and enjoyment. Looking forward to more!
Beautiful! Started following you painting it didn`t look bad then everything started running too much! O my will start again very much fun ! Thank you!!!!!!
Your fog is very transparent and that's great! 💖 I also have a video with fog, but in the mountains⛰️. It would be interesting to know your opinion on the fog that I got.🖼️
THANK YOU so much for this video, but also for mentioning the CAULKING! I have been wanting to add caulking to several ceramic & porcelain coated steel plates/trays that I have, but didn't want to cause problems with my trays! Now I can tell my ever patient hubby that you recommended it!
This was like falling in love with my husband all over again 20 and then a sense of new refurbished love with watercoloring.... thank tou so very much for sharing your tutorial. I am honored to have found it tonight. Shana signing out for now.
Amazing creative skills going on here, I'm an absolute beginner following this and just starting to understand the principles, could I ask what paper you're using here? The paper I'm using isn't achieving the same results for the mist somehow, I'm using Arches cold..
You really are amazing, what a gorgeous watercolor! so much to learn about the mist effect thanks for sharing your awesome techniques, that for sure I´ll try. Thanks and take care.
Thank you for sharing your techniques and skills, David. So very helpful for a newbe! What a stunning piece of work you've created😍 All that water going on just is mindboggling to a newbie! Thank you again😃
Wow! Thank you so much for this, Dave. Can't tell you how much it's appreciated. I've just come across it in January 2021, so Happy New Year, stay safe and well, and very best wishes from the UK.
What is the name of the water spritzer you are using? I can't find anything that puts out such an even spatter as yours does. I for sure want to get one in time for your workshop on June 15-18!
I have learned so much watching the few videos you have posted. I can't afford your online workshops but I sure have enjoyed what you have posted here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I appreciate your talent so much.
I just went to your website to look at your art, and I saw the George Floyd propaganda. Did you know he held a gun to a pregnant girl's belly while his mates ransacked her house? A black girl's pregnant belly? Have you no shame?
Jan 6, 2022: When the dryer is used, is it just bursts of the dryer, or does he dry the area he's working on completely, and then spatters???I ask because after he's used the dryer, the are still many wet spots/spatters...............thanks to anyone who can reply.........
Wow. I remember Roland ROCROFT His skill with light and pouring pigment. Now I see it developed in another skilled artist in tune with nature. Wonderful thanks
You must be using Arches. What other paper could handle that much water lol ...I'm inspired to follow along! ..just observing for now but I've tried some mist scenes with Jackie Peacock and she has a similar approach to mist.
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing technique , for me it's been lot more useful and fun and creative than some other watercolour tutorials on youtube. It shows that you are a real artist !
Do you use hot press, cold press or rough paper and what lb weight do you use? Also is your watercolor paper 100% cotton or what do you prefer? Thanks so much and thank you for posting videos. I can’t yet afford your classes so I really appreciate your free videos.
Lost opportunity to use, transparent, staining, pigments, Tonal value between horizon and mid mist is too flat. I assume your classically train artist that can take some decent art critique, but it really does look like a a board housewife picked up color instead of her scrapbook materials. Zero color palette cohesion.
I loved this painting. I made the light row of trees too dark and tried to fix it. Not a successful attempt. So, I'm going to do the painting again. I learned the spraying application and making the hard edges disappear. Thanks for great instruction.
What is the weight of the paper you used for this demonstration? Thank you for the demo. I have followed you for several years and totally enjoy your work. Hope to attend a workshop one of these days.
I was alwaystaught to put cool colors in the background and warm to thefront. You do the opposite. It is gorgeous but what made your decision to do that? Thanks!
Can you explain the reasoning behind spattering the water while you are drying the paper? Also, when you are spattering, are you spraying the top of the painting, the main body or at the bottom?
Just beautiful! I tried painting this and was wondering how you keep your darks so dark while wetting and spattering so often. Mine started out rich and dark but then got so diluted. Such a wonderful effect!
I agree with heavier paper helps - the brand matters too (and make sure you keep a tilt to your paper). Remember that watercolors dry like 20% lighter than the colors you originally see.
Hello David! Happy New Year! I don't know how I found you,.. an accidental selection, I think.. but WOW! I am blessed! I am self taught on YT since September, learning how to beat my arch nemesis, Watercolor! I am at location 17:30 where you are pushing water away with an old brush. In the beginning of this video, you showed the bleeding.. WELL.... about 1 week into my self education, those 2 things happened and Cauliflower, and I thought to myself that these 3 effects were very cool! So, here I am learning that they are real effects! I am elated right now.. Your trees remind me of Chinese charactars too.. I grew up in my I Italian neighborhood of North Beach in San Francisco, my best friends at the time were Chinese. They taught me to cook Chinese food but I wish I learned to write... I hope to master the mist soon! I look forward to watching all your videos.. Will you post more here in RUclips? God Bless! Victoria
It is February 2024. I just happened to see your tutorial this morning. This is something that I've been looking for, and I want to drive try. Thanks for sharing!
I notice you use a tilting table easel that tilts both toward you and away from you. What kind is it, where can it be purchased/viewed? Thanks. Love your videos. They inspire me so much. Jeanie Lemmo
Very nice. After watching it I decided to apply the techniques and halfway through while spraying water with my cheap spray bottle the top came off in my hands and the reservoir dumped all over the painting. LOL, practice in accident recovery. It turned out OK and I've learned to use a lot more pigment to gain vibrancy instead of being stingy with it. Thank you for posting it.
I can't believe the amount of ah ha moments I've had watching you paint!!! Sometimes we get so caught up in the details we forget how simply we can get them, naturally, if we could just be a little more patient.
Thank you everyone for enjoying the demonstration. My pleasure. The paper is 140lb cold press.. Variety of brushes, which are mentioned in the video. Hope we can meet and share the Watercolor Journey together some day or an online workshop. Stay safe. Sincerely, David

I love your feed back it makes me feel better about painting . I have painted for years but iam like you in a rude❤

Tape your paper and stop blaming the equipment and blame your frustration with practice.
Thank you, David - and thanks to Cheap Joe's Art for sponsoring this tutorial. I've wondered how to get the mist effect, and you demonstrated it brilliantly!
Your paintings are absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing your unique approach to painting misty scenes. You are the master!

Such a shame we have no more tutorials from David the last over a year ago. Just found him today 12/2/22 I hope he is ok. ✏️🎨🖍
Thanks for the joy you have so generously given to all of us through watercolor David!
David, loved all your watercolor painting demos, really enjoyed your skills, creativity, and of course the final results! Thank you for sharing them.

Amazing demo! You are totally awesome! I have really enjoyed getting back into watercolours and the mist gun is so much fun!
Where can I purchase the Dynasty 1827 brush? Amazon doesn’t have it in stock and the other two sites are Canada and London, costly shipping. I know I can use other brushes but I like that one. Great demo!!
I couldn’t find it either but found one similar at cheap Joes called a lizards lick.It worked good for me.
I've watched many tuturials on mist searching on how to do that whispy mist effect. Finally you have taught me how. Thank you so very much. For sharing your talent, your skills and your time.

Oh my goodness I'm speechless! That was an absolutely awesome teaching. Thank you so much! Love the music too.

Hello, love your tutorials. Thank you for sharing so much information. I have a question: Is it possible to paint much large? Thanks
You really are amazing, what a gorgeous watercolor! so much to learn about the mist effect thanks for sharing your awesome techniques, that for sure I´ll try. Thanks and take care.
Awesome! I need to visit Joe's and get some additional brushes! Can't wait to play with this!
Keep the videos coming, I love watching you work!

I just love the misty paintings. Thank you so much for the lesson.
I love the way you paint i have not seen this on youtube. You or great i paint the way you do an .So proud i found you page❤
Excellent work, techniques and process. Wonderful result!! Love the bulls eye!! What paper do you use? Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for sharing your amazing technique , for me it's been lot more useful and fun and creative than some other watercolour tutorials on youtube. It shows that you are a real artist !

Watching in November of 2023 and just found out of Joe Miller's passing in September. So sad to lose him

David, stop banging the brush after dipping in the water. The sound is very irritating. Simply wipe the brush on sponge or kitchen towel.
Wow, I wish I had seen this 2 years ago. Yes Cheap Joes is a great company. DaVini crested his kibe if watercolor for him. I like DaVini too.
A huge thank you as well to Cheap Joes for sponsoring (no affiliation and hope this is ok to post). Great place to get your art supplies for sure.
What is the weight of the paper you used for this demonstration? Thank you for the demo. I have followed you for several years and totally enjoy your work. Hope to attend a workshop one of these days.
Absolutely the best demo video I have ever watched. I’ve been a loyal Cheap Joe’s customer for over 30 years.
Applaud your choice of vegan brushes and paper. Now get with it on the paint (Daniel Smith).
Awesome! thank you.
How do you avoid cauliflowers while adding all that water?
This is a great tutorial. It would have been nice if you had shown your color mixing process also.
The paintings explanation is good , but this is the noises video presentation I ever hear. , all the bumping rambling strait in microphone. Huh
Thank you very much David; I really found this informative!
Thank you David, that was really inspiring! I am a total beginner but I will definitely try my best with mist :)
What type of brushes are you using? Beautiful painting.
Thank you David for sharing this beautiful technique! I so enjoyed your workshop at Joe’s last year and look forward to taking another one!
Your work is amazing!!! I hope you come to Italy for some class sooner or later!!🎉
You draw amazingly.
What do you call a brush that has a belly and a sharp top?
I love this so much! Thank you for sharing your talent with us! 🙂🖤
Learnt a lot of things.... Can you do more videos plz plz plz
Just beautiful!
I tried painting this and was wondering how you keep your darks so dark while wetting and spattering so often. Mine started out rich and dark but then got so diluted. Such a wonderful effect!
The matter is paper. It's necessary to use watercolor paper with density about 300 gm/sq m or more and the result will wonder you ))
I agree with heavier paper helps - the brand matters too (and make sure you keep a tilt to your paper).
Remember that watercolors dry like 20% lighter than the colors you originally see.
You used a dryer in the demo, but do you usually allow each layers to air dry before adding another layer?
Dangerous endeavor :) it looks very nice and really misty.
Incredible work. Love the depth the mist adds.
Beautiful technique! Thank you so much for demonstrating this for us!
Je vois que vous êtes parfaitement bilingue ce qi n'est guère mon cas snif
The brush in the water sound is cringe but what a beautiful painting.
What pound paper are you using? 300lb?
Your art work is beautiful. Wish you would post more
Great demo! Thank you for sharing your methods. I can't wait to try them.
You really a master
I have no way to do this. Jealous it’s my name
What’s the name of that funky brush you’re using?
This is absolutely stunning! I am so much trying this!! Thank you :)
could you explain your tripod easel sometime?
Thank you David! Splendid teaching and tech!!

Thank you! You do beautiful work!
What does such a very brief shot with the dryer between spatters of water do? I have never seen that technique. Love the result though.
I do not know for sure but I suspect that he is drying a little bit longer but cutting the video to shorten the time.
Thanks for the demo. It was great!
Would love to see a video on the waves and trees in the mist!! please?
It is February 2024. I just happened to see your tutorial this morning.

Its so peaceful watching you taking classes dear David.. Love you Sir.. As a beginner, I would definitely try this out..
I can't believe the amount of ah ha moments I've had watching you paint!!! Sometimes we get so caught up in the details we forget how simply we can get them, naturally, if we could just be a little more patient.
Juar found your channel! Thank you for your beautiful paintings! I hope you add more on here. 😊😊❤
Hi David! Do you ever stretch your paper before painting. I read so many different opinions on that subject. What are your thoughts?
A beautiful painting and excellent instructions! Perfection! New subscriber.
I loved this instructional video. I want to try this technique many time until I get it. Such a powerful method.
Thank you so much for this demo. Makes so much sense to me now.
