I once broke my tooth when filling out a questionnaire in college so honestly the fact that it took you this long to get a signing related non-hand injury is very impressive.
There's a story there... Was it a walking injury (caused through distraction by the questionnaire)? Was it a stress injury (caused by anxiety of the context, content, or connotations of the questionnaire)? This is a "Lewis Black - 'If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college!' " moment.
Is it even the format if there isn't a cord? I doubt it. I'd allow a long rope or strand of whatever acting as the cord, might even add some drama and unexpectedness
Once on a walk I literally stopped to take in the beauty around me and smell the flowers. I sneezed and threw my back out. But I did appreciate my body's comedic timing
I have somewhat unhelpful genetics causing me to have lots of random injuries. Most of my injuries are from my bed being comfortable and me deciding to turn over one more time before starting my day.. Also, coughing, or holding a pen for more than a few minutes, or hearing a sound and turning to look, or ... Not semi spectacular falls of of trampolines or bicycle though, those are fine
I once dared to sneeze whilst getting out of bed, and it threw my back out so damn bad, I was all but crippled for about three weeks. Ever since I turned 50, maaaaaan
this format video is one of the best. the format always reminds us of the fact that you are not a robot who lives in a screen, but a living, breathing person. this one is especially good, as it shows that you are not an indestructible person, as so many faces on the interwebs seem to be. thank you, John

Good morning John. I often find myself pondering the past, being a current history major and all, and I attempt to put myself in their shoes. When you commented on the idea of the people of the future remembering us for monolithic events that they believe defined our existence I feel a sense of melancholy, but also hope. I so deeply appreciate writers like you who seek to document both the beauties and the pains of an existence on this world, and I hope to one day use my historical knowledge to complete works that shine more light on the most important moments in the human existence. Thank you for the amazing work! See you on Tuesday :)

Just finished Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" with my 3 kids as part of our study of all of Miyazaki's works and his common themes. Tuberculosis was a huge plot point in the movie and we had a long discussion about it and how nerd fighteria has been working to help people who suffer from it. I can't wait to read your new book!!!
Now that's just good parenting. I'm in the process of showing my niece and nephew every Miyazaki movie. It's gunna take awhile because my niece is 5 and I don't think Princess Mononoke is age appropriate, no matter how much she wants to see the Princess one... The way John talks about pushing through professionally while balancing his mental and emotional health is honestly motivating for me. It's nice to see someone who is trying, not always succeeding, but continuing to try and make those balance sheets work. Gives me hope that even when I feel out of balance, fluctuation is part of the never ending march toward equilibrium.
I was talking with my kids about Beethoven yesterday, and one of them asked, "Why did Beethoven lose his hearing?" And I replied, "I don't know, probably tuberculosis." Alas, it was not tuberculosis, but the instinct is there thanks to you, John.
I love how you use your superpower of passion for good in ending TB. When the problems seem too big and our impact too small, I like to remember that something worth doing for all people is also something worth doing for just the one within our reach. 💛
I have been here for over a decade and these videos have shaped me in subtle and not so subtle ways. I have laughed and cried my way through young adulthood and into mid adulthood (or what young me would have called “old”). I have challenged myself and my beliefs and I this channel has made me a kinder, smarter, and stronger human. What a world. Thank you and looking forward to the book and whatever comes next.
When I got to this video and saw “No Views”, I skipped ahead to the very end just so I could be the one person listening to John say, “How about the beauty of Earth?” And it made my day.
John's ability to pull applicable quotes out of nowhere inspired me to keep a commonplace book. By next January I too will be able to contemplate an applicable poem off the top of my head
Looking back to the 1960s, I remember when my mother was in the hospital with TB in Montreal and we all were quarantined for a while. I remember this vaguely because I was very little. I could only think "Mama is in the big Sacre Coeur hospital across the river from me in Laval and I don't know when she's coming home." That was a very long time ago. Thank you for your effort. It matters.
Omg I can't believe I wrote such an insightful yet witty comment that it caught John's eye and impressed him so much I became one of the random recipients of a free book .....what are the odds!!!??
“I’m a little worried that I might collapse into a series of increasingly small polygons until I cease to exist.” Finally words to describe the feeling of traveling too much!! Thank you. Same. Also I started writing myself letters in the new year (inspired by your practice of doing so) but for myself in 5 years. I wrote one 5 years ago and opened it this year. It’s so wonderful having a glimpse of myself 5 years ago. Highly recommend.
“Yes the progress is real and no, the progress is not acceptable” Reminds me of Freedom is a Constant Struggle. We have to stop and celebrate how far we’ve come but we have to keep fighting. If you don’t do one the other will consume you
I think Potato would be more of a sasquatch with the brown fur, plus no one can replace The Yeti! Also that tree with the lights covered in snow!! So pretty! 😍
"The year decides" also reminds me of another of my favorite John quotes, which I quoted to my husband today: "you do not get to decide the notch situation!" OMG, your wisdom is for the ages. And for those of us who still, hilariously, believe we are in control. Love the format, always. And finally, congratulations on completing your onerous task.
One of my biggest takeaways from you and Hank has been focusing on a singular area to change. Often, when I look at the world and see all of these issues, I want to help all of them. One thing I've learned in my ministry at church is that spreading your resources makes your impact shallow. When you focus in on one particular issue, you're more likely to make an impact.
John just wanted to add a little thanks for being apart of my new years traditions. Which for another year I have been blessed to spend in the bottom of the Grand Canyon rafting with some of the best people I know. We all gathered around the campfire listened to the review of Auld Lang Syne and sang “we’re here because we’re here”. It’s moments like that that remind me my greatest intention is “to be here.” Wherever my nomadic feet may take me.
Once a professor I work with asked if I knew who Paul Farmer was. I found myself offended at the question, not because I've worked in Public Health for decades, but because I'm a nerdfighter. John educates us well.
Man, I know there’s no way I’m an early enough commenter to get an advanced readers copy, but I think this would be the one time where I’d see nothing weird or wrong about wishing for a second copy of a book I’d already pre-ordered 😂❤ love everything these brothers and their team stand for, and I can’t wait to read this book someday soon
Congratulations on finishing your signings John. I used to think it was special that you took the time to sign so many copies of your books. Now, I know the most important thing isn't that you take the time and effort to sign so many books. It's that you care so much about your readers and your work that you're willing to change up the format to make your readers feel special and reach a larger audience. It's the kind of thing someone does when they don't forget to be awesome.
"in the end, the year decides." i wasn't a fan of non fiction but the anthropocene reviewed was an awesome book. I'll be getting this book in print and in audio book version once again. thank you John for your hard work. 🎉
I really like the wave of people rejecting yearly “goals” and instead focusing on intentions. The cortex podcast does yearly themes and it’s been a huge help in my life to adopt them.
Something I keep deciding to do, as kind of a productivity goal, is to write down what I do every day. It's probably the most rewarding thing I've done in the last several years. We sort of take for granted that we don't have a place to look back on all of our memories, save our minds, but I can't tell you how nice it is to have journals filled with the lovely activities that make up my life.
Random commenter...chose me, me, me. John, your desire to take on the eradication of Tuberculosis is Awe inspiring! Thank you for all your determination. I will help in anyway that I can.
I love that I was a witness to the discussion during the signing about what you were going to do this video on, and I'm so glad you went with The Format. I hope your polygons stay large during promo John. Good luck!
I can't wait to read my copy and then send it to fellow Peace Corps volunteers serving in Sierra Leone. Getting books during my service was always a highlight and I hope they learn something as well as I hope to learn many things in the book!
I remember watching vlogbrothers as a kid, looking up to you two. Now I am the age Hank was when you launched your first video, and I still look up to you two. Thanks for being a positive influence on our world
Of all the things I am a part of, this community will always be the one I'm the most proud of. Every time I tell new friends about the concept of Nerdfighteria, it seems like I'm rambling for an hour about achievements that should belong to dozens of people (and in a way, do) but all started because a guy on the internet wanted to get to know his brother better as an adult. DFTBA!
John posting a Format video on my birthday makes me so happy! Stop hurting yourself John. We need you alive to keep doing the good work you are doing. I am so excited for the book and hope I can come to a talk soon.
Persistence of a curable infectious disease always boggles my mind, after reading about so many diseases, that have been officially eliminated, in my microbiology classes. Cannot wait to read Everything is Tuberculosis to know more, because I know for a fact that it will provide a bigger picture about TB than my microbiology book.
As a snowed-in dental student in Louisville, I wish I could learn more about TB. I'll be working with under-served populations and I think that your book will be very relevant to my practice. Thanks John!
Snow is the greatest thing. Snow makes everything look beautiful, snow makes the world more quiet and calm. I wish we got more snow where I am, it's rarely more than an inch or two that turns into brown sludge by midday.
I know someone from college who went down a step wrong and still deals with pain from that one step in his ankle, almost four years later. Bodies are fickle things and yet they are worthy of much grace and praise because they enable us to experience our lives.
So excited to read it John! As a microbiologist with heavy interest in infectious disease, thank you for all your hard work in bringing awareness to tuberculosis.
John, Congratulations on getting all of that signing done! You're doing great work, and thank you for that. Before I retired from teaching I kept your books in my classroom library, which were popular enough that they sometimes had to be replaced. I'm looking forward to reading Everything is Tuberculosis and trying to get into the swing of writing again. I hope your ankle heals quickly and well, and that your tour isn't too exhausting!
This is the second instance of "foot asleep, bork when stand" I have encountered. The first was my neighbor who completely BROKE her ankle and part of her foot, she had a huge boot and crutches for a long while and warned everyone she knew or saw to wake their feet/legs up before standing on them. A lesson taken to heart, as it was so shocking that she in perfect health was hurt so badly when all she did was stand up. Hope it heals fast, John! Thanks for sharing the dangers of sleepy feet with the world 😅
You're doing a great job and we are all very proud of you! As someone who gets anxious easily, I am in awe of your ability to do what you do because you know that it's the right thing to do. Keep doing the great work!
in 2017 I toured a sanatorium in Finland, and it was abandoned, old, no longer needed....I truly thought TB was a thing of the past. I wish I knew then what I know now. Thank you for all you do to raise awareness; I look forward to the inevitable accelerating of TB decline as a byproduct of your work this year.
Very excited to grab an audiobook copy of EIT because my human baby and your book baby are due around the same time. I forsee many an hour spent sitting and feeding said baby, and I’m looking forward to having something interesting to read!
I’m so looking forward to this book. The Anthropocene Reviewed is one of my favorite books. Thank you John, for being you. So happy we exist in this same time together ❤
I love the format because i can always count on John to make me remember to be grateful for nature. I work in environmental work and study the environment in school so you wouldnt think that would be hard for me but sometimes its hard to remember. Earth is an unrated planet
2:33 Also: there will be an audiobook that John will narrate himself, so everybody can hear him speak. Apart from every other Vlogbrothers video, of course.
My cousin-in-law just finished recovering from breaking his ankle in exactly the same way!! I'll have to tell him this is apparently a semi-common way to get injured 😂
I hope your upcoming book tour swings by my neck of the woods so that I can shake your hand and tell you, earnestly, how much I appreciate you and your brother and this community's dedication to reducing world suck.
I'm a kid right now and I am definitely scared at our inability to make change but my education has taught me that we are incredibly resilient and mostly trend towards goodness. This year might not be great, neither might the next, but there will be one year. In the words of the Mountain Goats "there's gonna come a day where you feel better/ you'll rise up free and easy on that day/ and float from branch to branch; lighter than the air/ just when that day is coming, who can say"
As I sit here with your mustachioed face decorating my shirt and my hair scrunchie, I'm reminded that we can never know what life will bring us - good, bad, or otherwise.
I broke my toe over the summer, I was in a rush and forgot something in another room so I ran to get it and was looking at my goal instead of the path to said goal... It was baby toe versus a metal 25 lb free weight and let me tell you how much the free weight won. The bone is basically healed at this point and yet, still it hurts. I encourage everyone to go outside. Whether you look up or down, you'll find something cool. Just also make sure you look where you are going, unlike me.
1:37 That's almost 600,000 less people dying per year over 40 years if the decrease continues is in absolute terms not percentages, then maybe in a century it will be at almost 0. Although that's still insane for something that's been curable for almost 80 years.
I am so relieved for the return of the format. I’m into exams at the moment and it feels like this was a Pavlovian reward to make me enjoy studying statistics. Thanks John.
I just moved back to the States after having been abroad for the past two and a half years. The simple joy of seeing a John video on an actual Tuesday really hit me today. Much love nerdfighteria
I'm so proud of you, and Hank, and Partners In Health, and us, and everything we have done together - and everything we will continue to do, because the progress needs to pick up the pace.
I wore a satchel incorrectly for several years and am now feeling my hip ache increasingly when I jog. Good luck with whatever remedial exercise will help your hand heal, my wife and I love your and Hank's videos

If you don’t do one the other will consume you
I like how 2020 happened, but you kept writing down goals for each year. That speaks to resilience and hope, to me.

Excellent Nerdfighters!!!
I’m always enthused by the return of The Format!
I love that John has been waging war on tuberculosis for years, this dude doesn't give up.
Achievement: New special interest unlocked 🔓
Once a professor I work with asked if I knew who Paul Farmer was. I found myself offended at the question, not because I've worked in Public Health for decades, but because I'm a nerdfighter. John educates us well.
@@rachelferat1521 righteous indignation there 😂❤
Man, I know there’s no way I’m an early enough commenter to get an advanced readers copy, but I think this would be the one time where I’d see nothing weird or wrong about wishing for a second copy of a book I’d already pre-ordered 😂❤ love everything these brothers and their team stand for, and I can’t wait to read this book someday soon
"in the end, the year decides."
i wasn't a fan of non fiction but the anthropocene reviewed was an awesome book.
DFTBA!
John, I'm glad you exist and I'm glad you do what you do.
Thank you for being you.
There’s a cure for that.
@@sunshine3914 There is but as much as it calls to me I can't currently afford to move to a Norwegian fjord.
@@theoneandonlyAethI think you misunderstand. They don’t mean your love and desire for snow will be satiated. They mean you will grow to hate snow.
@@hastyscorpion Yeah that's never happening.
I am sorry that you are in pain, and I am grateful for your efforts to give thanks to those who read your books :)
Thank you, John!
I know someone from college who went down a step wrong and still deals with pain from that one step in his ankle, almost four years later. Bodies are fickle things and yet they are worthy of much grace and praise because they enable us to experience our lives.
Glad to see the live stream comments convinced you to do the format this week. Hope that ankle starts feeling better soon!
aww! Thanks, ya'll!
So excited to read it John! As a microbiologist with heavy interest in infectious disease, thank you for all your hard work in bringing awareness to tuberculosis.
John,
Congratulations on getting all of that signing done!
It still just encourages and cheers me to see people setting limits or boundaries for their mental health. 💕
Keep doing the great work!
good job John!! (both on finishing all of them and on experiencing the first injury of this kind)
A signing-related ankle injury is truly the ultimate irony. I hope it gets better soon and congrats on finishing the signatures!
in 2017 I toured a sanatorium in Finland, and it was abandoned, old, no longer needed....I truly thought TB was a thing of the past. I wish I knew then what I know now. Thank you for all you do to raise awareness; I look forward to the inevitable accelerating of TB decline as a byproduct of your work this year.
I once sprained my ankle while asleep, so I can very much empathize with your ankle.
I hope it heals quickly, John. DFTBA
Very excited to grab an audiobook copy of EIT because my human baby and your book baby are due around the same time. I forsee many an hour spent sitting and feeding said baby, and I’m looking forward to having something interesting to read!
Making life less complicated and overwhelming is an incredible goal to have, and also a complicated and overwhelming goal
The format without the microphone feels like a CLASSIC 2009 John video!!
Congratulations John ❤ it was an honour to see the last Jog!! I love the lives so much

0:48 new fear unlocked. thanks John.
Wait! There were Pizza John scrunchies?!
What a great start to the week with John. This is going to be a great one. Proud of you John! Can't wait to pre-order the book soon
1:00 A wild Potato appearance. It's so good to see him. I hope he has been doing well ❤
I continue to be delighted by how well you make the format work for yourself John, it truly seems to be your final form
Underrated indeed. It is where so many great people were born, so many stories unfolded, so many art was created, so many songs were given to the air.
Incredible video! The mix of pride and humility is just right.
Lord, protect John’s extremities from the harm of his own generosity! Wishing the best for the success of your newest book, I’m pumped!
1:15 that sparkly snow covered tree, tho!!!
Thank you❤
potato is the new yeti 😭

I absolutely cannot wait for this book!
I hope your injuries (all related to signing) heal quickly. Thank you for all you do.
I just moved back to the States after having been abroad for the past two and a half years. The simple joy of seeing a John video on an actual Tuesday really hit me today. Much love nerdfighteria
I love an old school vlogbrother vibes video. Take care of yourself, John. Grateful for you and your work.
Always appreciate hearing your thoughts, John
I'm so proud of you, and Hank, and Partners In Health, and us, and everything we have done together - and everything we will continue to do, because the progress needs to pick up the pace.
+++ I'm so proud of how much we can accomplish together. I hope everyone else can get on our level in time. ^^
My wife is a big fan of your books, and as a teacher, I love using your videos for my students, particularly the origin of idioms and Langston Hughes
I wore a satchel incorrectly for several years and am now feeling my hip ache increasingly when I jog. Good luck with whatever remedial exercise will help your hand heal, my wife and I love your and Hank's videos
I hope your ankle gets better soon! As someone who lives in Australia, The Format in the snow was magical, so thank you!
