Hi everyone, I'm a seed saver from the 60s especially heritage varieties!I put my seeded plants in paper bags hanging down to dry and the seeds pop out on their own !Just a handy tip from an elderly gardener !
1. Wake up + make some coffee 2. Watch Garden Answer while drink coffee 3. Gather inspiration and motivation for my own garden Thank you for all the gardening information and for sharing your gardening journey!
Love you guys - it's like waking up to my favorite TV Show every morning. I watch many garden channels but it was your channel that started my love for gardening. Laura and Aaron - it's like lightening struck in the right place - your property, your parents garden center and the entertaining videos with you and your Mom - but it's both of you that are what makes your channel so special. Thanks for sharing your lives with us as well as your Gardening - your kids are adorable and we all love seeing Benjamin growing up around the garden and learning. ♥
I agree. Laura's channel started it all for me. Now I watch others, too, specifically for my gardening zone - HortTube with Jim because I garden in zone 7. happy day everyone. until next time, keep on gardening!
Perfectly said... I feel exactly the same. This is a great gardening family! I’ve learned Sooooooo much from Laura! Have a GREAT DAY! Sherry-Knoxville,Tennessee (Zone 7b)
Coming to a full cycle! Here’s an idea for the highlight channel, an edit of the full life cycle of a plant from being planted from seed to flowering to having the seeds collected. What a journey.
I would love this for small children to see as well. Lots/most kids in the US today have no exposure to this process in real life. A video like this would be great for that purpose. Benjamin could probably help!
You can never have enough seeds😉I was wondering if you have ever planted or harvested seeds from a Eastern Red Bud tree? I would love to know how so I can grow my own Thank you in advance 🥰
While the discussion about quantity was hilarious, there is something incredibly satisfying about growing a plant and using the results in so many ways. Nature is amazing.
Another memory brought to the surface. My father taught me how to harvest seeds from his gardens. He saved both flower and vegetable seeds. I remember when I was 5 years old, I was running as I carried seeds from our small barn to the house and I fell , which resulted in seeds scattering everywhere. My dad was a bit upset but he placed a few random boards around the area where I fell and stopped mowing there. Over the next few years the most wonderful gardens sprung up, full of flowers and and an occassional tomato and pepper plant. He would tell people "Marianne planted those." Thank you Laura, for bringing that memory to the surface. I think I'll be smiling all day.
As an avid seed saver, I love this video. I keep my seeds in envelopes and store them in the clear pockets of a plastic shoe organizer that I hang inside a closet door.
Some flowers readily reseed themselves and come up in the Spring on their own such as Larkspur, Poppies, Cosmos, Hollyhock and more. Of course, if you let nature reseed itself, they won't grow in a row. The effect will be more like a cottage garden than tidy and formal. By the way, a Laura seed giveaway is a great idea!
This will be lovely in the meadow areas! I grew California Poppies in the little dirt parkway in front of the house this summer, and they reseeded all over the place before I even checked! Luckily I have a huge bag of seeds from when I first bought them
For a moment I thought the world was coming to an end when Laura said "I won't have to order as many seeds for next year". Thankfully she clarified and said "of that same variety". I also get so much pleasure in collecting seed as well. Thanks for all the inspiration.
Good morning everyone! I've found that small prescription pill bottles work great for storing tiny seeds. I asked my local pharmacy if I could purchase a few dozen of them in different sizes, and they said yes. If you have arthritis ask for the non-child-proof caps, easier to pop the lids off. The prescription bottles are amber-colored, so less light gets to the seeds, which prolongs the storage life. I write the name and date I harvested the seeds on a piece of paper and put it into the bottle along with the seeds. ~Margie
I have this image in my head of a path of flowers blooming in Laura's footsteps next spring, like a Disney princess. Or I guess it might be a carpet of different flowers from blowing out of the gator. Either way, I love the idea of tiny little seeds getting strewn around, and producing a magical kaleidoscope. Maybe she could take a pinch from each jar or envelope and just sprinkle them over her meadows. Wouldn't that be amazing?
I remember my dad having seeds in medicine bottles. Not the prettiest containers but in the 60s and 70s he used what he had access to at the time. No online ordering haha. Stay Safe and God Bless.
I’ve been waiting for someone to do a video like this and I’m so glad it was you guys! I’m a beginner, and it’s nice to be able to see how to open up various seed pods and such. Thank you 🙂

I'm am in a Garden Club which we share seeds with other members and I give away to friends - my motto is to save as many seeds as you can! Both my Grannies and Momma were seed savers. Sorry Aaron but Laura wins! :)
You could get clear glass spice jars in large packs and use them for seed storage! They are the perfect size and most come with a lid that has holes to help sprinkle them out if needed.
Oh my gosh when Laura wasn’t labeling the jars I was like ahhhhhh I would never remember. So of course I giggled when she momentarily was questioning which was which. 😂

Oh this brought up a memory of me as a child. Instead of a lemonade stand, I had a seed stand selling 4 o’clock seeds in Dixie cups! Can’t recall if I had any buyers lol.
I have 4 o’clocks growing out front of our fence line from the seeds I collected from my mom’s plants last year. I can’t wait to collect the seeds again.
Hi Laura, maybe you could also add Zinnias to the mix in a future video. It is so fun to pull the little arrowheads from the flowers. My saved Zinnia seeds come up beautifully the next year every year!
Jess from Roots and Refuge used to just crumble and sprinkle the zinnia flower heads over the area she wanted them, usually just back into the bed they came from.
@@seanaames6855 Yup, I've done that too, especially with Coneflowers. Every one I deadhead gets tossed right back in the garden and then lots of random new plants in the Spring that then get transplanted to where I actually want them!😉🌱
This brought back such fond memories of my mum sending me out to the front garden to collect marigold seeds as a child. I'm not sure if it was to save money or to get me out from under foot, but either way, it was so satisfying pulling the little black stems from the dried flowers and then planting them the following year. 🌞

We use empty Rx containers, that are washed and dried, to store harvested seeds in. It’s an added bonus that the containers have childproof caps and we’re recycling them too. Due to RA and other health issues, I haven’t been able to work in my yard like I used to. But watching you has inspired me and I’ve decided to invest in a couple of raised beds and containers so I can do some small scale gardening! Thank you for the joy you’ve brought back into my life; I just love watching you and your family in everything you do!
The majority of us will probably NEVER do this..haha. But boy is it fun to watch you be so excited. And I love the razzing aaron gives you from behind the camera. He sometimes speaks for us at home..in a loving teasing manner of course. Keep on seeding and collecting and being your awesome self! We love it. ❤️
“How many seeds does a person need?” Aaron, your City Boy is showing! And you were JUST talking about being proud to be so into tractors and farm equipment. -3 pts 😂
Who can take something as boring as seed saving and have us glued to the tube and hanging on every little tidbit??? Laura, oh yes Laura can!!! I ENJOYED every moment of this video. We so appreciate you and Aaron. God bless you and your precious family!
Do I dare admit this funny story from when I was a new gardener...? Here goes.... My basil was flowering and going to seed. I brought some in the house (thinking I would let the flowers dry out more to collect the seeds). To my surprise a whole lot of teeny tiny little black "seeds" dropped onto the placemat below the flowers. Yay, I thought, oh how exciting - basil seeds. BUT NO. A few days later little Mr. Cabbage Looper made an appearance on the leaves and I realized my silly mistake. 🤣 I was saving looper poop not seeds. OMG ewww 😂 Now, years later and wiser, I only collect 'actual' seeds. :0) Oh and I've found 4oz mason jars are perfect for seed saving too. Happy Gardening Everyone!
Have you watched Linda Vater’s video on seed saving and the cool packages she uses. I believe it went up this week. She gives them as gifts and even when people stop by her garden she sends them home with seeds. So there you go Aaron you can never have too many. It’s a great way to encourage new gardeners.
I use empty spice glass containers. I buy the oblong square shaped and keep the little insert cap to use when I plant if the seeds are small enough. I leave the caps off until I know the seeds are nice and dry. These store in less space. Love that you are doing this.
When I save my seeds, I do it over a baking sheet so everything stays in one place. It helps me gather and pour, too, without getting them all over the table or floor. (Some of those seeds like to pop off and jump. LOL)
@LaRae Mitchell Try planting poppy seeds in the coldest part of year. Scratch up the ground where you want them, sprinkle the seeds thinly, then, just pat them down, don't cover. The winter moisture waters them and repeated freezing and thawing increases germination. East of Denver, I had fabulous luck planting in January. I'm now just East of the Colorado/Kansas border, which is a half a zone warmer than my Colorado home, so we'll see how that works.
This is just the video I needed! Thank you so much for posting. I love your channel and was able to share with my mom, who now loves to garden because of you! Thank you so much for all you do. I love sharing in this experience with her. We love watching you with your your mom as well.❤️💐🌼🌿🌻
This video was so inspiring to me! I know a lot of the comments people say they do this, save seeds, as a hobby, but I had no idea! I want to see more Laura! I would love for you to continue on this subject. Maybe in the fall tour you could make a point to show us plants and flowers we can save seeds on and those we need to save bulbs on, like the dahlias. I'm learning so much. Thank you! Thank you! To those that have heritage gardens you pass down from generation to generation plants and flowers...You are AMAZING and I hope to be you when I grow up Lol!🌻🌻🌻 "To plant a garden is to hope in tomorrow..." is one of my favorite quotes and Laura, you and Aaron show me this all the time. Bless you!
I have an idea for your seed saving! You could test tubes closed with corks, I started using that technique this year, and so far it's been great ;) I find that it's a more manageable way than envelopes, especially for light small seeds. Plus in your dry weather the corks should hold up pretty good :D
Just spent 4 hours in my perennial garden ripping out a bunch of wild daylillies. Ugh! What a chore. I won't be able to move for a week ! Lol. All the while I was being inspired by Laura weeding her lawn! If she can do it so can I. Oh the fun new stuff I can replant in that space! Thanks for all your inspiration you guys! Love this channel.
Still voting yes to a GA seed give away. Aaron, do you second the motion? I wouldn't mind a cross bred flower ... would just call it the Garden Answer (insert flower name here) variety. Lol. On the veggie and herb side of the garden, I have a book 'Seed to Seed - Seed Saving and Growing Techniques for Vegetable Gardeners' by Suzanne Ashworth recommended by another RUclipsr. Really helpful for saving heirloom varieties. How to avoid cross pollination, what plants need to go into a second season (e.g. alliums) to get the best seeds etcetera. Already made up the price of the book by how many seeds I've properly saved.
Aaron, we can never have too many seeds. This fueled my need for more seeds. I have paper sacks all over my tiny house with seed pods drying. I could easily plant 10 acres. Being prepared is not hoarding.
I have been a seed saver for many years and love saving money so I can try other types of seed the next year. One tip crease the paper in half to make it easier to poor into an envelope one handed.
I save snapdragon, petunias, dill, foxglove, hollyhock, and lots of marigolds to use in my next year's garden. How fun to plant and take a clump of the petunias in those black containers flowers come in from the nursery... Take a pot of blooming petunias to friends!!!
Hi Laura, I'd love to see you gathering seeds from your dahlias and grow them next year. I do so, too. I can't imagine the great feeling when they grow to random new varieties. One more beautiful than the other. Love your videos!
12.35ish, Aaron: But will you? Laura: Yes! Awesome. I have a crop of Columbine seeds that I grew from seed last year (2020). I was so thrilled when they actually bloomed this spring and watching that bed multiply is so satisfying. I'm collecting the seeds to give to family and friends this year as Christmas gifts. So exciting! Thank you for this video and a crash course reminder of how to gather them correctly.
I very much recognise that glimmer of excitement in Laura's eyes. 🤩It's oddly satisfying to collect your own seed and get every single one out from those seedpods. It would be great to see the colour mixes of those larkspurs and nigellas next year.
It’s incredible how much seed one plant can produce. It goes to show that nature knows nothing but abundance, so living abundantly is a gift to all of us. There is no need for greed! Gardening teaches all of us to save and share! So many life lessons gardening can teach us!
How awesome 😁 just think of how many seeds just one watermelon contains. How generous is that! Enjoyed as always all your educational and helpful info shared Laura. Appreciate your time and consideration you extend. Share your videos with so many at work or family/friends. Keeps the positivity during these very challenging times we're all experiencing. Thank you again! Love, from Zone 9b.
I love these videos and harvesting vid’s too… Day made! I’m just getting my seeds together, getting ready to get my plant on for my garden. Australia here!
@@amorashby3116 exactly!!! Sometimes I got back and watch the winter videos to try and get a head start. But we have a different climate here-no snow. So I’ve got no idea… 😂😂😂
It’s crazy that one branch of one plant can yield hundreds of seeds, each with the potential to become its own plant and keep the cycle going! The command to be fruitful and multiply came alive to me in a new way watching this video.
Bravo Laura! Gifting seeds especially at the holidays and special occasions is such a great idea! Lots of people like to have flowers in their garden but they aren't always sure what to plant and saving them from your own zone is extra helpful. And just for the record Aaron let me answer for Laura..NEVER TOO MANY SEEDS SILLY!
The entire time you we’re putting seeds in the jars I was thinking, “ She hasn’t labeled the jar, how is she going to remember what’s what???” Lol!! Of course YOU did…now if that was me, definitely not! What a great teaching video this was! So many different aspects to gardening that I’ve never attempted in my 61 years on planet Earth, but am now inspired to because of Laura and Aaron! Thank you!
Hi Laura I harvest and save seeds for the next year, but I put the date on my packages. I usually have a lot of seeds and sometimes sow seeds that are two years old. Love your videos and you are a very good speaker, your annunciatuon is great and best of all is that you stay on the subject. Just letting you know that your audience really appreciates you and your diligent video efforts. Carolyn Salisbury, N C
I’ve been collecting seeds too. I have collected a ton of coneflowers.. been trying to collect a bunch of varieties/colours. I figured out that I only have purple in my yard and there are soo many other varieties., so now, every time I see some different varieties of them., I am knabbing deadheads. 😂 I have already collected Columbine seeds and then spread those seeds up and down my shaded hillside for next year. 👏🏻 I am also growing Monet’s Palette sunflowers, only two popped up BUT they are BEAUTIFUL 😍 So I am leaving those alone for them to produce seeds., so I can grow a ton more next year. So in love with them. Beautiful. Tell your hubby that we need ALL the seeds! Alllll of them. So satisfying. 😊🙏🏻 Keep growing. 🌱
Your video makes me so excited to harvest seeds from my garden this year! I won’t have nearly as many as you had but seeing your seed piles was satisfying!
I've been gathering the dried flower heads from my zinnia plants. So far I've got about 3/4 of a 1 gallon Ziploc bag filled with all colors of zinnias. It will be interesting to see what colors come up next year around my mailbox. A happy surprise awaits!
You and Aaron make what potentially could be a somewhat maybe a little boring video so much fun. I laughed out loud when you guys discussed how many seeds does an individual need😄. Thank you for all the knowledge but especially for the giggles😊. Love you guys!

I usually don't grown annuals but 3verthing esle is really successful! Hi from Tasmania Australia!
Petunias are fun to grow from seeds. But they're really slow to start 😅 about 12 weeks from seed to transplant. And then 2-3 months before any blooms

-3 pts 😂
A fun thing with nigella seeds-rub some seeds in your hands then sniff. Clears the sinus!
It would be an interesting video to compare the original hybrid plant, to what grows from its' seed next year and compare the flowers and performance.
OMG ewww
😂
Now, years later and wiser, I only collect 'actual' seeds.
:0)
Oh and I've found 4oz mason jars are perfect for seed saving too.
Ahhhhhhhhhh! Morning coffee, seed harvesting, and Laura!
Life is GOOD!
Have a great day gardening friends!
God Bless,
Sherry-Knoxville
So when will the LeBoutillier Seed catalog be available? 😂
Love it!
Putting a crease in the paper will create a better path for the seed to travel.
Have a great weekend Laura and Aaron! Enjoy your family and each other! Hugs🤗💜🤗
When I save my seeds, I do it over a baking sheet so everything stays in one place. It helps me gather and pour, too, without getting them all over the table or floor. (Some of those seeds like to pop off and jump. LOL)
Poppies are the bane of my existence! I planted one once, two years ago. And I'm still pulling out sprouts. My sons love them
I wish I had such luck with poppies! I’d gladly take that problem.
@LaRae Mitchell
Try planting poppy seeds in the coldest part of year.
Laura, Ball makes some 4 oz “mini” jars that would be perfect for this.
I save supplement/vitamin containers. Lots of other small containers can be reused.
Laura: "You can give them away"
Aaron: "but will you?...."
Laura: "yes"
Another "look just like mom" moment!
😂🤣
🤣
Hahaha.....
Thank you! Thank you! To those that have heritage gardens you pass down from generation to generation plants and flowers...You are AMAZING and I hope to be you when I grow up Lol!🌻🌻🌻
"To plant a garden is to hope in tomorrow..." is one of my favorite quotes and Laura, you and Aaron show me this all the time. Bless you!
I have an idea for your seed saving! You could test tubes closed with corks, I started using that technique this year, and so far it's been great ;) I find that it's a more manageable way than envelopes, especially for light small seeds. Plus in your dry weather the corks should hold up pretty good :D
@@atticusfinch4266 funnel
Sounds like a great idea !
How you store them though 🤔?
@@noemierollindedebeaumont1130 just stak them in a drawer or inside cups?
Good morning, Laura ☕️ Such a time consuming process but SO worth it! Don’t forget to plant your carrot 🥕 seeds! Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
You And Aaron are so funny together. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
First year gardening and am saving seeds! Thank you for this video, I feel like I’m more educated and super excited! Thank you for being specific!
I could watch you harvest seeds and just marvel at God’s creation all day long. So amazing!
Every time Laura says "isn't that amazing?" or "isn't that beautiful?" I find myself answering YES!! Good thing I work from home.
I gathered pink poppy and tons of sweet pea seeds so far this season. I’m learning so much from your show. I love it! Thank you!
Aaron, we can never have too many seeds.
This fueled my need for more seeds. I have paper sacks all over my tiny house with seed pods drying. I could easily plant 10 acres. Being prepared is not hoarding.
I love when you collect seeds!
We love saving seeds and gave generations of plants over the years from seeds
I have been a seed saver for many years and love saving money so I can try other types of seed the next year. One tip crease the paper in half to make it easier to poor into an envelope one handed.
Can't tell you how much I enjoy Laura's enthusiasm. Enough seeds? Aaron, she has a meadow to plant 😀
I save snapdragon, petunias, dill, foxglove, hollyhock, and lots of marigolds to use in my next year's garden. How fun to plant and take a clump of the petunias in those black containers flowers come in from the nursery... Take a pot of blooming petunias to friends!!!
Aaron, you looked down when you said you’d give them away. Leave her alone, she’s saving 💰 money. 😊. Plus I love seeing all those glorious seeds!
Collecting seeds!! My favorite!! Hi Laura!😊💖🌼🦋🐝🐈🌼👋👍
Love seeds !!!!! Collect, collect, collect.
Laura u say something is super simple but for me it new so keep showing simple stuff thanks
Good morning! 🌻🐝
I'd be very interested in a followup vlog on cold stratification for those seeds that require it.
Your channel is the best, you share so much information this is amazing, blessings to your family 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Can you please do a part 2 and include Nasturtiums & Stock? 🌸💛
I love these videos and harvesting vid’s too… Day made! I’m just getting my seeds together, getting ready to get my plant on for my garden. Australia here!
Same on my side in South Africa, and now know ahead how to save the seeds
@@amorashby3116 exactly!!! Sometimes I got back and watch the winter videos to try and get a head start. But we have a different climate here-no snow. So I’ve got no idea… 😂😂😂
@@gerkinsaregreen same here! Also no snow for me and very mild winters. I so wish I could grow tulips as well, but too mild here😭😭
@@amorashby3116 can you pop the bulbs in the fridge/freezer and then plant them like a annual?
@@gerkinsaregreen I tried that, too hot and humid here for them. Plus side is that I can plant/seed some seeds all year, so there is that🤪
It’s crazy that one branch of one plant can yield hundreds of seeds, each with the potential to become its own plant and keep the cycle going! The command to be fruitful and multiply came alive to me in a new way watching this video.
The ASMR 🦻 on this video is unreal haha loved when she shook that poppy in the mic, nature’s music aaaah.
Thank you!
Such a sweet and beautiful family
Hi Laura
I harvest and save seeds for the next year, but I put the date on my packages. I usually have a lot of seeds and sometimes sow seeds that are two years old.
Love your videos and you are a very good speaker, your annunciatuon is great and best of all is that you stay on the subject.
Just letting you know that your audience really appreciates you and your diligent video efforts.

I have already collected Columbine seeds and then spread those seeds up and down my shaded hillside for next year. 👏🏻
I am also growing Monet’s Palette sunflowers, only two popped up BUT they are BEAUTIFUL 😍
So I am leaving those alone for them to produce seeds., so I can grow a ton more next year.
So in love with them. Beautiful.
Tell your hubby that we need ALL the seeds! Alllll of them. So satisfying. 😊🙏🏻
Keep growing. 🌱
Your video makes me so excited to harvest seeds from my garden this year! I won’t have nearly as many as you had but seeing your seed piles was satisfying!
A seed giveaway would be a cool thing to do... then some of your fans could grow what you are growing...
I've been gathering the dried flower heads from my zinnia plants. So far I've got about 3/4 of a 1 gallon Ziploc bag filled with all colors of zinnias. It will be interesting to see what colors come up next year around my mailbox. A happy surprise awaits!
Outstanding!
I can see Christmas gifts with pictures of the plant/flower in situ from the garden they came from. How personal and loving.
You and Aaron make what potentially could be a somewhat maybe a little boring video so much fun. I laughed out loud when you guys discussed how many seeds does an individual need😄. Thank you for all the knowledge but especially for the giggles😊. Love you guys!
I have always wanted the bread seed poppies mainly for the dried seed pods. Seed savings is very satisfying. Also, I love sharing it, too.
