I was saved out of Buddhism and other new age thought as well. The cool thing is that while I was a Buddhist, I began to want to trace the written doctrines and writings and was left wanting when I realized the written works were separated by hundreds of years from the supposed Buddha I claimed to follow. This wanting lead me to the Bible and to think twice about Jesus. Jesus is Lord!

@@dame4ever Depends on the scholar you ask when it comes to exact dates, but based on the evidence the gospels were written by the apostles while people who had seen and heard Jesus taught were still living. Christ died around AD 33. Some put the book of Matthew in the 60s AD. What's even more fascinating is oral tradition. Only about 10% of people in Jesus time were literate. So much was memorized and passed down orally. It is likely there was a very, very early oral tradition of Jesus life that the gospel writers used. Essentially, Christ's words were being committed to memory insanely early (especially considering how much later other ancient documents have from time of event and the record of it). Another thing if you're curious.... Google the John Ryland's fragment. It's evidence that the gospels have been catefully passed down from the originals. Hope this helps with your question.

It is interesting how Buddhism really seems to deny reality. Our thoughts are important to pay attention to. We as Christians need to be in tune with our thoughts so we can bring them to God and bring them under obedience to Christ.

Its interesting that she mentions the Beat Poetry book of Buddhist poetry, when the example I think of is the well known Jack Kerouac tome Scripture Of The Golden Eternity which is his sutra on Buddhist philosophy. Buddhism was 100% the religion of choice of the Beat Generation and drove much of what they did, even though they pretty much were all born Jewish and Christians. One of the Beats was Gary Snyder, who lived in Japan, and translated many Buddhist scriptures into English. The idea of getting in touch with one's inner self of Buddhism was essentially the essence of the Beats. Very much the opposite of the later Hippies who wanted to 'tune out.' Jack writes in the Dharma Bums about meditating without drugs or alcohol (or women). (He failed.)

I appreciated the speaker's not infrequent admissions of non-expertise, because much of what she says is almost EXCLUSIVELY applicable to Western, synthetic, New Age Buddhists. Her dismissal of the ethical core of Buddhism is clearly influenced by her participation in American New Age nonsense, among self-centered hippie Boomers whose compassion WAS little more than a facade, but to paint authentic Buddhists with that broad brush isn't just uncharitable but inaccurate and misleading.

I spent 3 years in Japan. The Buddhism there is corrupted as its mixed with Shinto (even when the theology contradicts) and the government has a hand in it. I believe at one point they even fabricated some theological texts. I also spent a summer practicing zen at the San Francisco Zen Center. While there I spent time with a visiting monk from Japan. I told him I was moving to Japan and he said the Buddhism I found at the San Fran Zen Center was more authentic than what what going on in Japan.

If the Buda was real, if the religion does date back to 29AD, he could have met Jesus. He could have been that man Jesus told to go sell his possessions. Budism, as we know it, could have started as a twisting of Christianity from a church Paul didn’t get to.
