I figured out what the melody in Thieves Like Us reminded me of.
Don’t You Want Me by The Human League.
“Working as a waitress in a cocktail bar.”
Last two words have the same melody.

At least the two songs are tonally appropriate. Sisquo’s “Thong Song” shares a melody with “Eleanor Rigby.” Hence it’s one of the greatest musical absurdities of all time.

Substance was released to help New Order out of a financial hole, the 12" versions were edited to fit the CD format of the day. I first heard the cassette version in 1987 whilst in the British Army doing trade training.
Heaven 17 did a similar thing with their 12" compilation Endless, but that had the full length versions on from what I can remember, but they reduced the number of tracks on CD as was only a single CD.

Part of the fun of being a fan of New Order was trying to track down all the different versions and remixes and b-sides. Loved going to record shops to see if some import or rarity found its way onto the shelves.

You've reacted to Manchester's the Smiths, Joy Division and New Order, but you can't forget about the legendary Manchester post-punk band The Chameleons (UK).
Their debut album, The Script of the Bridge, is now considered one the best and most influential post-punk albums of all-time.
In his retrospective review, Ned Raggett of AllMusic praised the album, writing, "Script remains a high-water mark of what can generally be called post-punk music; an hour's worth of one amazing song after another", calling it "practically a greatest-hits record on its own".

I agree with the commenter who suggested Depeche Mode - Violator. It's post DP 101, which was essentially all of their 80s stuff. Violator might be their response to Disintegration.
Something else I'd suggest, which starts to branch out in a different vein, is to make the connection from New Order to Underworld. Maybe it's already been suggested in other comments, but this is a great context to lead into Dubnobass and Second Toughest.

Hey, Alex. Almost two years late to reply. Glad you're listening to "Substance". This was the first N.O. album (technically a compilation) I ever listened to, waaaay back in 1988.
Regarding "Thieves Like Us" (i.e. the song whose melody sounded familiar), it was actually on the soundtrack for the movie "Pretty In Pink". It was not released on the official movie soundtrack; however, New Order had apparently recorded their take on the whole soundtrack, but the producers only used "Shellshock" in the final cut of the released soundtrack. However, you definitely hear the instrumental version of "Thieves Like Us" play (it's the scene where Andie is modifying the infamous pink dress), as well as the haunting instrumental "Elegia" (from their album "Low-Life").
    Cheers!

If Ian had lived, Joy Division still would have moved into a more synth-based, more danceable tracks, since the instrumentalists drove the sound and Ian wrote words around the jams, most bands evolve....but it's just that the songs would have had vastly different lyrics and Ian's deep vocals of course. I think with Ian singing, Ceremony would have been a big hit in the UK.

For me that is Substance. Fans go on about to the second side like it's wonderful. While there definitely are some gems like you get from good band's B sides, don't expect too much! As I've listened to your other NO album reviews, I correctly anticipated your reactions to a lot of the tracks. The funniest one was on Sub-Culture when you said, "Is Republic leaking in?" I had thought moments before that the backing vocals would remind you of Republic. On the whole, I hope you can see why NO fans value Substance in its own right. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

    Memo to Alex:
    1) Don't be afraid of Substance, part 2. For example, 1963 is one of their best.
    2) Temptation is a bit of a monster in their current, surprisingly non-geriatric live set. You may be surprised/disappointed how non-sulky their onstage presence is these days. Kinda dilutes the mystery, but at the same time it's good to see Bernard whooping.

Temptation and Confusion were rerecorded for Substance... I never really liked the 7” (a.k.a rough mix) version of Confusion... The 12” is better, but the song came to life when I got Substance on vinyl and think the 1987 version is one of NO’s best tracks.
The only song that isn’t better on Substance is Subculture imo. Subculture is great on Low-Life and on MIF17, but the single version is not as good.
You’re listening to an edited 12” Perfect Kiss. It didn’t fit on the CD. That’s the main reason I’ve got the vinyl!

"Too Late" is a must off the peel sessions! But enjoyed watching your reactions, thanks. Part 2 has the song 'Procession', which is my favourite New Order song; It starts with an ethereal trickle of synth, then you get shot into this post-punky world of lush basslines and guitar, along with rythmic, fast pased drumming. Paired with dreary lyrics, it's a perfect transition from Joy Division to New Order. (I believe it's also one of the only New Order tracks to feature Gillian singing in the background.)
Can't wait to see your reaction to it! :)

It has always amazed me that although I consider myself a NO purist I prefer the Subculture single than the Album version. I think it's something that fits them.
