Just the perfect tribute to Prince, they knew each other personally and had a lot of respect as musicians, Bruce sounds very emotional and is pushing himself to do tribute to Prince, fantastic song fantastic tribute

So glad you reacted to this cover. This was performed just two days after Prince died, hence the purple lighting and band attire. You can feel the weight of emotion in Bruce and the band's delivery. And just when you think the cover wasn't emotional enough, The E Street Band unleashes their secret weapon: Nils Lofgren. One of the most underrated guitar players in the world. 'Nailed it' doesn't even cover it. He took this cover to new heights. And then Bruce and Steve, to use a comment I've heard about this cover, 'cry like a pack of wolves in mourning for a member of their clan'. Bruce and Prince admired each other as band leaders, and you can feel that he felt his loss deeply. Also, good on you for soldiering on through the sickness. Get well soon, my friend! And also also, as a guitar player myself, can concur, D'dario is the best haha

Thanks for telling the story of this version, I remember knowing something about it, but I didn't remember it. As for the mutual admiration is something I'm glad to know ;)

This would have been April 23, 2016 in Brooklyn, a couple days after Prince died. This was the third time on that tour that Bruce had played a song to commemorate the death of a legendary musician, the other two being David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and the Eagles “Take It Easy” (for Glenn Frey).
On those other two occasions, the tributes had opened the encores, but this performance opened the entire show. That’s significant because this was the tour where Bruce opened every show on that leg with a full performance of his album _The River,_ so for him to change that up was a huge gesture of respect from Springsteen to Prince.

He sang this because Prince had just passed away ...He was on Brooklyn for 2 shows. So he did a tribute to Prince both nights in Brooklyn. it's an amazing tribute.

Bruce has a way of taking others songs and making them feel like they were written for him it by him. He does a Sting song Hung my Head which gives the same vibe, he also nails INXS's Don't Change, and many more.

This was a great cover. Bruce is very much like Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Chester and a handful of singers who really know how to convey a lot of emotion strictly through their voice without a lot of tricks are body movements. Just pure emotion. This was a few days after prince died. A ton of bands on tour at the time ironically including pearl jam did covers to honor him. Pearl Jam in Charlotte during the improve part at the end of yellow Ledbetter where mike aways mixes in other songs did purple rain and Eddie did the hoo hoo chorus part with the crowd. Ive yet to hear a bad Springsteen cover. This was great.

I think I commented on the "Staying Alive" cover by Bruce that you should react to this. Good to see that you have. I was fortunate to see Prince in concert in 2004, but have never caught Bruce live. Hopefully I will sometime in the not-so-distant future.

Bruce and the E-street band performed purple rain in memory of Prince's death... it was a beautiful tribute from bruce to one of the greats of rock.

Very very close to the original. Only main differences that I've picked up is the voice. Definitely deeper, lower, and slightly more rich than how prince sang it. Other than that (besides the backup vocals being sang by men instead of women), pretty close. I think the solos were slightly different. Although both are just as awesome.

Bruce and the band nailed that one. I was never a huge Prince fan but always liked that song. The boss did it justice and some. On a side note, Eddie vedder performed it the other night, you should check it out. Great review as always keep up the amazing work.

David- you never cease to impress with your honesty in your reviews
Was nervous how you'd react to this one- I guess I think of the song as a bit more iconic than you
1984 will always link Bruce and Prince with the peaks of their pop popularity- as dissimilar as they are- I believe there was a mutual respect
Bruce on Prince- (sic) - " I always left his shows humbled and knowing I was going to have to work harder"
Nils Lofgren is so underrated as a guitarist

Presumably this was live in Minneapolis, based on Springsteen's habit of covering local artists at his concerts. If you want another cover that sounds like it was written for Springsteen, try Stayin' Alive.

This was a really good cover by Bruce and the band. But, in no way does it TOUCH the original. And it wasn't trying to. It was a tribute to an artist and musician Bruce loved and admired. Beautiful tribute.

The original has a real soulful sound, almost Gospel like. Bruce did a great job on this song, capturing the same soulful sound but with his style of music playing. It's one of those songs that sound amazing with different musical interpretations.

Guitar solo is Nils Lofgren. In my opinion one of the greatest rock guitar players of all time. I know not THE top but in the top group and sad thing is that so many don't know his name. Well a lot do but not enough.

I remember about a yr before prince passed away there was a poll rolling stone magazine put together (i know) that tapped pretty much every muso in the business on the shoulder ranking live shows. The boss was #1, prince was #2 primarily cause prince was a better guitarist than most bands have (apparently).
Thoughts on the original song itself, I always preferred when doves cry and it really isnt close but when done live prince's solo is one of the few times i wished the popstar singer started up a rock band instead

Ironically I just saw Eddie Vedder closed his show at the Beacon theater last night with a cover of Purple Rain. He's doing a short solo tour before PJ heads out on a few months. Glen Hasperd did most of the vocals so kind of a let down.

  • @littleraven28

It's a nice cover, but definitely not as good as the original. It misses the edge of pain that the original has. It is a song about the hurt by being madly in love with someone who is with someone else.

  • @adrock1011
    @adrock1011 2 года назад

Funny enough… eddie vedder covered it 2 nights ago at the beacon theater. To my knowledge, that was his first time (i could be wrong)
Your comment about how this song was meant for bruce takes me back to the u2 rnr hof induction when he sang “street with no name” with u2. Thats a song/band that i always didnt like…. But when bruce sang it… i couldve sworn hed written…. It was meant for him
Based on your feedback i thought youd be in the 8.6-8.8 range… but thats okay… i still respect you

I hope your discomfort goes away soon and it's nothing ;)
About the reaction, I thought you'd give it a higher score, although personally I wasn't as impressed as you ;) it sounds pretty faithful to the original, although obviously the vocals are what differentiate them the most and it's a good version.
The guitarist I think is Nils Lofgreen, he replaced Steven Van Zandt in 1985 and when Steven returned to the E Street Band they both stayed.
Very much agree with what you mention about Johnny Cash and the song "Hurt", those things happen, in my opinion Joe Cocker or Tom Jones have done it with some songs they have covered and the most recent example is Alessia Cara & The Warning's version of "Enter Sandman".
Despite being a big Prince fan, I'm a bit tired of "Purple Rain", it has songs that I like a lot more and that I find much more interesting, but it's the most famous and personally I'd stick with the original album than this version ;)
I've also listened to Bruce Springsteen quite a lot and I've enjoyed him a lot, although I've been on a different wavelength for years (something similar happens to me with Prince) but I think his album "Nebraska" is very, very good.
Thanks a lot for the feedback and take care ;)
    Greetings from Spain ;)

This cover is much like the original sung by Prince. Bruce did such a great job singing it just seemed that it was meant for him. It wasn't. Bruce enunciated the words better, so I got a better feel for their meaning overall. However, the band's work wasn't as clear or spacious, and the lead guitar solo certainly wasn't as bright or ringing or creative, which made me miss Prince even more.
