      The botswana president had a good approach compared to malema. He is not dectating things. Look at how he gradually went from 10% to 50%. I am sure they had a target agreement which was met

      We are already doing that. In the past five years i have seen many made un Botswana products in the shelfs and our vegetable farming is getting better. We already have started fruit farming. We will get there.

      De Beers has been a good partner. Nothing wrong with this public-private partnership. You get rid of a problematic partner. No one can describe De Beers as such.

      You’re right and that’s why the government have heavenly invested the revenue generated from diamonds on education to generate a skilled workforce in the future , healthcare, and business friendly laws for ease of doing business in the country , and not to forget about infrastructure , they are also focusing on exporting renewable energy in the future because they just found ideal areas within country that can easily generate electricity via solar and wind

    The Botswana gov learned from the rest of Africa - they did not see themselves as the indistructable be all of wisdom + experience.
    They looked at their assets with a strategic mind, to gain from whats happening on the rest of the continent, in a disciplined, calm + collected way - without much ado. Well done to them.

    Mined Diamonds are no longer a very safe bet to bet a future economy on though. Demand and earnings have been steadily but surely decreasing. Might be time to follow the Middle East oil playbook and start investing to grow other industries.

    I hope that our governments are securing some of these precious stones in storage for the land. Some things are worth coping from others. Failure to store some of these precious metal one day other lands will have more tons e.g in store than us.
    Building the country's land and people is equally important. Africa should be in full leadership in all forms of mining and supportive infrastructure after all these years. Wake up Africa. Agriculture is vital but the it cannot be totally depended on. Permanent long term measures must be taken in addition. It's even more important when agriculture lacks the full development of a viable commercial industry to promote or sustain any population.

    The government was already receiving 50 percent of the profits for debt beers mines in Botswana, Including 15 percent of Dec beers itself. The current deal simply we will sell up to 50 percent of production directly

      Correct. And additionally, taxes were paid too, so the entire govt share could be up to 85% of the revenues. De Beers sold a larger share of the mined diamonds, while the govt sold a smaller share. From the share sold by De Beers, Bost got 15% of the profits, plus its share in Debswana. Complicated shareholding structure.

    1966 to now yo and still only 30% with annual increase of 2% p/a for the next 10 years, not bad at all. Now they need to monetise private companies for local logistical support and processing of the rough diamonds to capture 70% value add processing processing to fully diversify economy 👌 big ups for this content

      Having studied in NWU.
      I agree with you. Batswana are very humble people .
      NWU which was called UNIBO was actually the first ever University built by contributions from the community. That shows how much the Tswana value education. Tswana Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng also went there. She is the first ever Black woman in SA to obtain a PhD in Mathematics.
