I am not an economist but I had always believe Botswana live in a bubble, a lifestyle it won't sustain in the long run. This is even clear on our way of approaching life as Batswana.we like big things but we don't sweat for them.
I love how they said that what we had 20-30 years ago is not what we have now. At some point we have to change. Botswana has the potential to be a giant tech hub and bring in billions from all over the world, but we are focused on diamonds and agriculture, when it has been proven that our soil is not great for agriculture
I appreciate how he highlighted that Botswana's innovation center remains empty. While our leaders talk about embracing innovation, the implementation falls short. If Botswana’s leaders were genuinely open to creativity and innovative thinking, they would realize there’s no need to rely on creating initiatives for the locals. Instead, they could recognize that Batswana have the capability to develop and drive these innovations themselves.
Very insightful and relevant for Batswana of all ages. My young colleagues and I were talking about this podcast today and my dad who is almost 70 years old also told me he watched it. Great job 👏
It's good to hear from Dr Keith Jefferis, he is a think tank of note, once you interact with him and engage on economic issues your understanding will never be the same
Those who benefited most from the Diamonds and Tourism of this country for more than 50 years yet the country is still undeveloped despite having the most expensive diamond mine will never have the right or bearing to discuss the interests of our people. Time has come that the country has to look for alternatives since current partnerships on minerals and tourism have dismally failed to help facilitate the development of the country’s yet they benefit heavily from those.
To be honest, it has nothing to do with partnerships but everything to do with leadership. As they said in this podcast, our government is still running like it did 20-30 years ago, but the world and even the country has changed. But the way our leaders think and rule has not changed.
@@lifeofdtw9694 that there is a leadership problem may be true. But the new deal has definitely ruffled feathers. Debeers has historically had a monopoly and controlled the worldwide diamond market. I refuse to believe that their hands are all of sudden tied. The only other player at the same level in diamonds industry as them is the government of Russia, which is currently under sanctions. Please explain to me how the laws of demand and supply work and how they are likely to respond to such a scenario and tell me if our predicament makes sense. I totally support synthetic diamonds. We do not have to be opposed to them but I believe we are because of our contracts with mining companies. Just a hunch. But it is an industry worth exploring especially for use in manufacturing. The general concensus that I have heard and seen is that the current government is wasteful but according to this podcast, government spending hasn't changed but government income has fallen. Which one is it? Again, there are problems with our governance in general. It is not as efficient as it could be, for one. It is also overstaffed and so on. But there is a deeper problem than the current administration. These problems have been there and these things have been happening. Why now?
Very refreshing and informative. Unfortunately, Botswana’s government has yet to experience the influence of visionary leaders who can embrace change and foster creativity. Instead, the country’s governance remains entrenched in cultural norms, with leadership often dominated by the elderly, resulting in outdated policies and practices.
Botswana can excel in the future with right thinking which is what’s best for all batswana people. I love the country and I believe they will thrive with the correct leadership. It’s a higher consciousness that needs to prevail. Sadhguru is an example of leader that is building communities of enlightened humans. Botswana can to as a country lead the way for Africa! ❤
Diversification, create employment and skills. If 20 companies can create jobs, teach skills and export, so can many others. Landlocked, high electricity and water costs but a brilliant stable workforce and smart people. A good environment for business. We need to market our country more, entrepreneurs and investors create jobs and diversify economies. Vet them properly, with skilled business people and let them bring the expertise and funds they need to manage their capital and we will all thrive. Carry on as we are and our trajectory as Keith mentioned, will be dubious. With the tremendous unlocked wealth Botswana has, coupled with our small population, we should have the best education, best health care and no poverty.
With President Masisi we are Free and Remain Behind him throughout. We know of many African Leaders like him who suddenly were targeted for the ideal plan of liberation of the African People.
The diamond dynamic is permanent. Its not going to ever be the same as before. Common sense should inform that if customers have an option, the dynamics can never be the same as before. Its over. Best focus on other industries and wind the diamond down. Its over for diamonds. To think differently, is to be in denial.
Thanks for the perfect update. Thinking about investment diversification is certainly key, How do I properly invest 250k in the market and what strategies do I employ to make significant gains and stable cashflow?
in my opinion, some financial situations can be handled on your own if you research enough, while others are best navigated in consultation with a financial specialist
Well agreed, amid covid-19 outbreak, I simply adopted the service of a certified financial planner instead of panicking and thankfully, I've accrued nearly $1m ROI after subsequent investments to date, marking my most significant financial milestone
Productivity is never accidental; it is always the result of careful planning, dedication, and consistency. I am grateful to God for my advisor, MRS Clara Burn
One key observation though is that this low inflation numbers are not consistent with the prices we pay in the shops. At any rate, I am yet to hear of prices going down once inflation numbers are revised down and this applies not only to Botswana
Prices going down would only happen when there's deflation, meaning negative inflation (inflation in the negative numbers - below 0%), which very rarely happens. But as long as there is inflation of anything above 0%, regardless of how it fluctuates, prices will always increase.
Insightful. Thank you Dr. Jeffries. Bra OB, is there any possibility that we can share some questions and suggestions we might have for your guests and yourself?
Just watched clips on lab grown diamonds. The awareness and market is still low but growing. What will become of countries dependent on the sale of diamonds should we get caught off guard. It has been proven that technology is the way of the future, remember the Nokia strory. Mayb I am overreacting but our government has to be concerned.
That's a vulnerability we have in the Southern part of Africa, Botswana and Namibia highly dependent in the mining sector and my country(Angola) highly Oil and Gas dependent. We should look into alternative ways to make our economy more independent from our natural resources.
We who don't work when our fathers' success stories was getting hired at the mines! Even watching from half asleep, I think I picked up something. I believe the first head at one of the township schools was a Jeffries.
We need a government that will take an active lead in industrialization of the country, with the use of state owned enterprises. The private sector will come ones the ground work is done. The current guys believe too much in mith of a private lead industrialization
Excellent observation, I thought I was the only one noticing how distracting that is. The host feels he has demonstrate his knowledge, too. And the laughter...
We are here because our government has long stopped heeding advice from professionals. Professionals think longterm but politicians are driven by what they need to do to win the next election and continue enjoying power and the material benefits that come with it. So the future looks gloomy as politicians will not take unpopular decisions that might cut short their stay in power. Unless there is a constitutional review that will facilitate a balance between politics driven initiatives and pragmatism of a professional approach.
I had hoped he would reflect more on his time as Senior Policy Advisor and why he could not instil many of the positions he holds. Was COVID a distraction? Resistance/incompetence at government enclave?
Could Botswana partner internationally to go into large scale into solar energy generation to export regionally on a big enough scale it could even include manufacturing of the solar panels. Given South Africa’s poor management of its energy sector they might be an obvious customer.
We can't be stuck on old ways when we clearly see where the world is going we should start putting ourselves out there and compete with the world in terms of innovation this mindset is what put us in this situation we are in right now, we saw that Lab grown diamonds was going to be a threat nearly 10 years ago but we never felt the need to seek other ways to diversify our economy, we have be heavily reliant on Diamonds for too long@@kabzaify

There should have been a deliberate effort to kickstart other high value mining ventures to beef up the diamond pillar. Rare earth minerals are in abundance in Botswana but the current administration is not innovative and creative.
@TshumuKokgalagadi we saw a lot of reckless spending under Khama, squandering of Morupule B project, Palapye glass factory, DISS cesspool but the GIA was fat plus foreign reserves were plenty.
