I imagine the baton shop to be a little like mr Garrick Ollivander’s store at Diagon Alley. The conductor does not choose the baton. The baton chooses the conductor.
From the short time I conducted a wind band buying the baton was exactly as you say like buying a wand as it needs to be the right weight and style. You can try conducting with it in the shop before you buy. Mine has a wood rather than cork base.
I first came across you in 2014 when I was asked to engineer for “an orchestra” in Ramsgate, Kent. The blend of comedy and music was brilliant and completely changed my opinion on orchestras and classical music
My guitars love you Rainer! 😁☺️☺️ They all sit up and listen when I play your videos. 😳 To me you seem like a brilliant and hilarious very intelligent gentleman.
I really love watching your videos, and I even showed some to my viola and piano teacher, and they appreciated them! I've always loved British humour, and I especially love your humour! I'd love to be able to go to one of your concerts! Also btw, you have a very nice French accent! It seems you know French quite well!
I discovered your channel recently, I love it ! Always have a lot of fun watching your videos, thank you :D I hope one day you'll do a concert in France :-) Bonne journée !
So nice you are open to peoples questions. Cant wait to see if you do another Q&A If I knew you were going to do one I would have asked 2 questions. 1 : where do you draw you comedy ideas from. And 2 : who are your favorite comedic musicians.
Comedy ideas come from just thinking about classical music and the craziness of it, in some ways: concert etiquette, how classical music is used and referred to, famous pieces and things I would like to see happen in them. Favourite comedic musicians: probably Victor Borge (who was a good pianist AND a a natural clown).
Here is an off the wall idea, from someone who would not know a quaver from a quiver, but if I am right, it might be funny. Take two musical notes, beep and bop. it does not matter whether you play them that way round or as bop beep, they sound OK. Extending this, you might come to the conclusion that, because many notes sound good going forward, they might also sound good going backwards. In other words, instead of starting with God save the Queen and going on to the last line, forward, you start at the other end of the verse and play ''Queen the save Go'' and go backwards to the beginning. I have no idea what this would do, but it might be fun to try!
We all know one can go a really long way with piano, but it DOES give me pause that he was conducting his, presumably small, comedy orchestra before any conducting training. Had he been in choirs and orchestras as a pianist before? That would certainly help. It's kind of incredible that a fair group of musicians were like "Oh, sure -- we'll play in your comedy show and whatever you think'll work for conducting, if you're accomplished in piano, we can make it work." That process of building on whatever learning of conducting he already had would be its own comedy gold.
I hope I am not being rude, but I noticed your neck and it concerned me. I hope you are well and have well-developed muscles. You bring a lot of joy, thanks!
I regretly just had notice about you some months ago but I really admire your work A LOT. I'm a conductor myself and always have tried to do some funny stuff on my concerts because I strongly believe concerts are more than just music and the audience DESERVE to enjoy a show that makes them happy. You're one of my main role models now and if you open a school of conducting and entertaining I'll be the first in line to be there. Also, I'll try my best to do the spanish captions of your videos because I want to show your videos to my students. Thank you very much, maestro.
Thanks for your comments. If I have given you inspiration, that is great. But, haha - a school of conducting and entertaining would have VERY few students, I'm afraid. If you are interested in providing Spanish captions to some of the videos, that would be great. It takes us toooooo long to get it right but we would love to reach out more to Spanish-speaking audiences. Feel free to contact me through the www.rainerhersch.com - the 'book Rainer' form.
@@RainerHerschRUclips thanks for answering! I know it's just a dream but at least I have your videos to learn :) I'm contacting you on the site right now, thank you so much!
I was interested in your comment about becoming tired when conducting, Maestro so my question is "Would you think a ball and socket on the end of your baton rather than a piece of cork would be helpful, particularly in fast pieces such as The William Tell Overture? If it was a long one - which I think Sir Adrian Boult favoured - maybe you could even reach a member of your orchestra who was not playing to your satisfaction and give the a tweak! Blessings and peace sir.
I just can't wait until the pandemic is over and I can conduct my orchestra again. I was a late bloomer in a sense. Didn't get the chance to conduct an orchestra until my 40"th and my orchestras former conductor sadly passed away. Yes I was actually meant to play the tuba. I play trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, piano, accordion, guitar, drums and more. So it's kinda a multi musician. Lol

Hey rainer, i have been a fan for awhile now and i enjoy all of content and you are amazing. Btw have you heard of woodkid? His music is pretty interesting maybe u can play some of his music?
@@RainerHerschRUclips Well now, many players I know would be highly insulted, but the way I play (and have been for 60+ years), I would have to agree with you!
Ling Ling can conduct, be the orchestra, and keep the audience from making noises at the same time.
What wouldn't I give to see a concert featuring Rainer, Brett, Eddy, Hilary, Olaf, Ray, Sophie, Sanna, Davie, Joel and Sarah.
That's such an ultimate crossover

Thank you for adding joy to music and producing new art!

I hope so too!
Thank you so much for entertaining us, especially during this quarantine period 😇

Hello Rainer. I loved this video. Thank you for the videos that are awesome entertainment for my soul. Keep them coming.
More to come!
Those barbed wire batons just gave me the bdsm version for batons vibe. Very entertaining video. Thank you so much.

But how do you feel about the MozART group ?
Love 'em. Did some work with them a couple of years ago in Warsaw.

Just looked him up. Interesting. Thanks for the lead.
Where you ever struck by lightning? Oops wrong conductor!
Rainer and TSV? interesting!
Come in France then!
What will you upload next?
Got some more show clips. And one about 'what a conductors gestures mean'. People do wonder.
Can you do more classical music fail or more classical music funny moments?
For your next Q&A. What are your thoughts on the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, and would you like to work with them?
We did it already a few times. April 1st 2013, Royal Festival Hall was the grandest. There is a DVD available at www.rainerhersch.com
We didn’t learn what piece of classical music you hate that most people absolutely love.
Yeah, doh - that some how got cut from the edit. Sorry - next time.
How many Maidments do you yourself play?
R: usually only one at a time
Extremely hard to get your hands on more than one at a time.
Talking about batons, and no mention of Gergiev's toothpick?
That's the subject of another video...
They have done some touring.
Cool. I wonder what they did on stage. Played Bach double concerto?
@@RainerHerschRUclips I don't know I never saw them. I just know I've heard them talking about when they toured.
Where can I find a Jesus Christ Superstar baton?!!
Special order. Andrew Lloyd Webber has a secret stash.

Two set violin gang? Drop a like if you are.
...for conducting Jesus Christ superstar 😂😂😁😂😁
Must the conductor suffer too?😂😁😂😁
ps why is my garden wall stone deaf......
Sound like the setup for a joke.
Yes i know but I can't think of the punch line
So, you don't play tuba? Tch, tch, too bad. I feel for you. ;-)
Should do. It's a perfect comedy instrument.
