I might order a Carver fretless banjo kit but I'd like to try a fretless out first. Even here in the SF Bay Area there don't seem to be any shops that carry them.

I played that banjo up at Georges (Gibson) and lord that thing is incredible, all around a very interesting instrument.

Happy new year! Could I ask you, I've seen your video comparing clawhammer and old-time and the likes, but what is this style that you play here? You also seem to play it in the last few videos. Sounds very unique!

I started out two-finger "thumb-lead" picking and then drifted into my own down-picking/up-picking approach. I call that "overhand" style, a term I learned from my longtime mentor George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. It falls within the same realm as "clawhammer" but represents a set of techniques characteristic of eastern Kentucky banjoists like Gibson, Rufus Crisp, Buell Kazee etc. The emphasis is on rhythm rather than Melody and trends more toward "banjo songs" than "fiddle tunes."

What is the small banjo in the background? Do you still have it? And if so could you please play it in a video?

Looks like the fifth string is .020" mono or a chirango high E or thirty pound leader line.

Mighty fine sounding banjo! What's the name of the last song you played. Sounds familiar, just can't put a name to it.
