    The two things I have heard about the van thing and it makes gpod sense was to keep the van keys where you can find it easily. In the middle of the night, if there are things that go bump ( or knock) in the night, you are able to make a fast break for it. The other point was to keep the driver seat clutter free. If there is stuff in the seat, it has to be moved before you can drive away.

    I love your new van. Please do not park where the grass can touch the muffler and tail pipe, the grass catches on fire from the heat of the exhaust and can burn your vehicle down in a hurry. Be safe and have fun. I hope your new van meets all your expectations.

    Nice vehicle. Would have been nice if you had done a few "panoramic" or views of the inside from an "overall" perspective. You basically showed everything at a zoomed in micro level where we could never see anything as a whole. Like the compact size; seems like it would be easier to get around.

    Love your van, especially all the windows/natural light/ventilation with bug screens. Awesome! I am researching what type of RV to purchase and never really saw a class B as feasible until this video. Thank you for the tour. Also, thank you for mentioning the canary alert thing-a-ma-jig. I wasn’t aware of anything like that available and it would give me peace of mind and the confidence to go into a store or place that didn’t allow dogs. My canine companion is a part of the family and, well, you understand how it is. Thanks so much for the tour and all your videos. Your trail blazing, wisdom, and videos make it much easier for a solo female like myself to get on the road with a smooth transition from a house to an RV. Happy trails 👍🏼😎

  • @subuer
    @subuer 6 лет назад +3

    What an amazing Class B! What I'd suggest for your spare tire would be to invest in an articulating unit that works with the regular tire rack. That way it swings out and pivots away so you can open the doors! They are about 289.00 on Amazon the last I checked and that'd go with what your RV has stock or you could pick out a new one to go with it.

    Hi, I just found your channel & subscribed. Love your new van, I just bought something similar, a Winnebago Travato and will be a snowbird starting in Sept. No more snowy winters for me. Doing small trips this summer with my two dogs to learn all I can before i head out for 9 months cross country. I'll be going back to your previous videos to pick up any tips i can. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

    Oh my goodness. You explained this much more than any other info-mercial that I have watched on this vehicle. You have totally sold me on it now as this is one of the ones I have been thinking of. For now I have set up my Dodge Grande Caravan to travel with..... minimalist of all minimalists!!! This should have been a selling commercial for them. One question though, what did you do with the spare tire?? Just-In-Case??? In short... WOW!!! A home away from home!! Love it. Subscribed

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +1

      Joan O'Arc Thank you!!!! Wow what a glowing compliment!! Congrats on the Dodge! Any vehicle will do as long as you can be comfortable and travel! I left it at the dealership. The stupid cover was busted which would have been a warranty item and I didn't want to lug that tire around inside until I figured it all out. I might get a swingaway hitch at some point.

    First-time viewer here. Been watching vlogs for a year or two now and yours is one of the best I've seen on presenting a class B. I have a nine-room house full of stuff which I'm trying to get rid of. Have been thinking of getting a class C but after watching your video, I think I may get a class B like yours. You did a great. Thanks.

    It has plenty of storage inside. I love how much you can open the van up? Cross ventilation is important. Its a good rig. I wish Australia's RV market was more like USA. I have been watching your old videos preparing for my first trip. I have been delayed due to my spine issues. My son and I have a outback trip planned for July. In meanwhile we need to play with the caravan. Oh I need steps aswell, I'm 5.2ft.

  • @SistahRev
    @SistahRev 6 лет назад +15

    New sub here; thanks for sharing! I have been binging on videos about Class B’s and the Hymer Activ is very high on my wishlist so far. HOWEVER: your experience has made me think that Hymer’s quality control, as well as their “fit and finish” is unacceptable... atrocious, even! How could they permit a vehicle to reach the sales floor with one of the awning feet connections missing? And when you go to fix a window component that was ALSO not properly installed nor quality checked, they break the window crank instead- or at least fail to verify the proper operation of the window???? Can you and/or other viewers explain to me how and why that is considered acceptable or, as you say nonchalantly in the video (I may be paraphrasing, so forgive me), “No big deal; it happens!” I would like so much to get into RV-ing, so I need to understand how there is no uproarious outcry when the people who make TRAVEL vehicles do such a poor job that you have to spend a significant part of your early ownership time “traveling” back to them for repairs that should not even be necessary. Anyway- thanks SO much for sharing your experiences, and the beautiful places you have traveled!!! 💐💐💐

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +6

      Hi SistakRev - I don't disagree with you that quality control can be better, but unfortunately it's the industry. Every manufacturer I've seen out there misses something. I also liken it to purchasing a house. It happens and you get things fixed during your warranty period. BTW it wasn't Hymer that fixed the window vent, it was the dealer. Still doesn't make it right. I think as far as how we deal with this, well we don't like it, but if we want to RV then we just know the "game" and what to do. Again, highly unfortunate, but I find it happens in many industries and we as the consumer end up dealing with some of these issues afterwards and then get them fixed. It was like that on my Winnebago as well. Overall though I have been very pleased with Hymer and have had MUCH less issues with them then with other manufacturers. We travelers tend to also just fix things ourselves - call it home maintenance and repair. Sometimes it's just easier to do it on your own. I know that might not be what you're looking for, but it's the reality of RV home ownership, but again to me it's the same with own a sticks and bricks home. Things break, repairs need to be made, you deal with horrible installation from subcontractors, etc. I guess maybe I'm also used to this because I've been in the real estate/home building/apartment building industry most of my life so I see a lot. This seems pretty tame to me. That's just my experience though and I can see how it's disheartening when you buy something and it doesn't work like it should - like missing the bracket for the awning arm. I hope that doesn't deter you because it's just a very small part of this life. It's a great life and way to travel.

    • @SistahRev
      @SistahRev 6 лет назад +2

      Story Chasing I very, very much appreciate your honest, thoughtful, and helpful reply! Your background in both RVing and real estate lend even more weight to the value of your words! The parallel with homeownership is apt, and gives me a better mental framework from which to consider it- I have been a VERY fortunate car owner who has never owned a “lemon,” and since Class B’s have wheels I had been using THAT as my basis of comparison. In my case, for my sanity & sense of expectations, it’s probably better for me to think of a Class B more as a “mobile HOME” moreso than as a “MOBILE home.” 😉LOL! Thanks again, and happy, safe and satisfying travels to you! 🤗

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +4

      Oh I love that "MOBILE home" vs the other. Yes I would agree and I'm like you in that I've never had a lemon either so I don't know what that's like and hope to never know! Good luck in your search and may all the sweet sugar fairies find their way into your RV and ward off the lemons. 😌

    evan through the spare tire was a pain, trust me when i say, you should have kept the spare tire there are places where it can take a day or two to get you what you need in places like montana, south and north dakota's or elsewhere. having that spare can be a life saver

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +12

      Thank you James. Interestingly my other RV didn't come with one and some cars these days don't have them either. I understood the risk when I did it so a couple of days of not being able to get somewhere isn't so bad compared the convenience I get almost daily. There's just nowhere else to put that thing. Too bad they didn't make it a swing away somehow so it wasn't so heavy and could easily be moved around.

    What I love is that you are thrilled and you're living your authentic life and have collected the skills to do so. That's beautiful! ❤️ What is sad to me is all the space vehicles of this calibur poop away with their floor plans. Take a van that size empty, omg the brilliant designs people can and have come up with. It seems to just zap the moveability and coziness within it when RV companies slap their floorplans in. :P

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +2

      EC A thanks for watching and for your compliments. Yes you're so right that some manufacturers just seem to waste space and not know what the consumer really wants; however I feel like Hymer got this one really right - at least for me. I have a few complaints, like the storage doors need to open in the opposite direction, but mostly the layout is really well thought out and I use every bit of the space. I think if you compare this to custom built vans it lacks some of the homeyness because they use different materials that aren't so uniform and of course the custom part makes it nicer too. However on some of those custom built vans they trade light for shelving. For example I have windows everywhere and if I didn't have those they could put more cabinets, etc there, albeit shallow cabinets, but I love the light and I have plenty of storage. It at least works for me. 😄

    Oh wow you did it!!! Omg!!!!!!!! Welcome to the Hymer/Roadtrek family!! Wow your Hymer Aktiv is very nice! It's got tons of storage in it! I love everything about it except the Cassette toilet Do you plan to use your Cassette toilet as Joe and Kate are? I'm SO glad you found something you love that's smaller! I know that was a BIG concern of yours. I'm glad you got that addressed so you travel in a smaller way. I'm getting my Roadtrek de-winterized on Monday so I can start using it again! I'm getting a late start because I'm still healing from my broken ankle. You did a great tour of your Acktiv. I'm sure people looking at them will appreciate that! I also like that you answered those who wanted to know what you paid for it. I think it was a fair price for a new loaded Aktiv. I think you'll be happy you loaded it up. All the bells and whistles makes it easier to use it to boondock which then also saves you having to pay for campgrounds!! I can't wait to continue on your journey with you! Do you miss your Class C sometimes? I miss my Class C toyhauler every time I need to haul something. I think I'm going to also have my tire taken off my Roadtrek and seek out one that is a swing away. This is SO exciting! You know I had to comment for sure on this video! Ha!

      Hehehee Tracy. I did it!!! Oh I actually love the cassette toilet. It's so darn easy!!! No I'm doing all "numbers" in that toilet. lol I haven't seen a need really to not use it that way and it's just me so it works well. I do however go to the rest rooms anywhere I can if I'm out and about so that helps too. Hows' the ankle?? You ready to hit the road finally??

      Oh wow! You should watch the The Fit RV's video when they tested out using a Cassette toilet. It was a disaster for them. My ankle sucks and I'm about ready to cut it off. Uggh! I got my Roadtrek de-winterized last week. Now I need to get out there and use it. I've just been using it to haul stuff lately for my business. Hey did you join the Roadtrek & Hymer Facebook group? If not you should! Where are you heading now?

    About the spare tire manufactures do make tire mounds where the spare tire would swing out of the way. I know for the Travato they don’t come with a spare tire but you can buy an optional third party tire mounts that go into the hitch of the van and it swings out sideways.

    I have a very small campertrailer, so basicly I suffer some of the same problems you do. To save some storage space it comes in handy when you keep track how much you use all of your stuff for a month or so on a daily basis. That makes it easy to get rid of all the redundant items.

    I looked at 12 different Hymer vans. My god, the fit/finish and overall quality was atrocious! I wanted to love them because they were kind of pretty inside, but man, so many broken parts and peeling laminates on brand new vans. I did a few videos on my channel if you want to see how bad the 2 I reviewed were. But, when they embezzled themselves to death, lol, I was offered a Axion totally loaded, including VoltStart with 600Ah of lithium ($58,000 brand new). I went and took a look and it looked like it had been ransacked. The van had 4 miles on it and cabinets were falling apart, the inside sliding door trim rubbed up against the outside so much it ruined it, and nothing was straight, everything was crooked. Had their quality control been much much better, I truly believe they would’ve survived.
    Hymer is 100% the reason I built out my own gorgeous van instead. And saved myself $20,000 while having a lot more amenities. I even have tons of solar and can run my rooftop a/c (13,500btu) off my inverter.
    With Class B vans starting at about $90,000, it just makes sense to build your own and get exactly everything you want, and exactly everything you don’t want.
    I wonder what Hymer owners are doing now for warranty issues. I heard that the folks who bought Roadtrek are honoring Roadtrek owner’s vehicles, but what about the Hymers?

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  4 года назад

      VocalVirgo hmmm...was it a demo? I haven't had that experience, but yeah Hymer messed up a lot with the fraud/embezzlement issues and purchase from Thor.

    • @VocalVirgo
      @VocalVirgo 4 года назад

      Story Chasing No, it was brand new. I had looked at a total of 12 different units and all of them had pretty bad fit/finish. I believe in order to sell them at such a low price point, quality and quality control suffered badly. I talked to a guy who was a line builder at RoadTrek and he said the Hymers were given just 2 hours to be built (they were built in the RoadTrek factory). A typical RoadTrek on the same ProMaster chassis was given 6 hours. Just some random info. And believe me, I really wanted to like them... I loved the brilliant floor plan of the Axion.

    We Love the van. It’s nice cause you can keep the bed down. We were looking at another one (Thor Gemini) and liked it but in order to use the bed you need to put the slide out which wouldn’t work while driving. The Hymer seems to be popular now since you and the Russo’s have video’s about it (subscribed to both) It’s small enough that it isn’t to noticeable but big enough to have fun with it. We’re really looking into getting one. We just want it for weekend adventures and small trips. Thanks for the GREAT video!

    If it’s just you you should def check out the “Carado axion”. It’s only 17.5 feet class B full lithium (can even run AC with no shore power), it’s got massive black tanks (you could poop for 2 weeks lol), AND an amazing huge bathroom. For a solo explorer you can’t beat the axion. If u downsize again be sure the check it out. It’s also a Hymer product and costs under 80K!

    I’ve watched your video again and I found 1 thing I would want to change. It may not be a big deal for you but I would want the doors on the back storage units to open inwards instead of out. Seems like that would make getting things in and out a lot easier. It’s a small thing but it would make sense.

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад

      LOL Lily! You and me both. Also the one in the front of the storage area opens towards you as well so it's hard to access. I'm going to be at their mfg plant next year and I'm going to see if they will change these for me.

    Hi, Amber. I enjoyed your video. I too have a Hymer Aktiv. I'm still employed and haven't had many opportunities to travel yet. It was great to see someone actually living in the Hymer so I enjoyed your tour and seeing your stuff actually in the space. I too had the spare removed for the same reasons you expressed. Amber, have you done anything to modify the mattress? It's very firm -- too firm for my old bones. The obvious thing to do is get a topper, which I did but if one wants to stow away the mattress, the floppy and unwieldy foam topper is a hassle, especially for those of us who are vertically challenged. I have a darned difficult time getting a fitted sheet on that mattress, too. BTW, following a suggestion on a Hymer Facebook group, I purchased a mast step for the bed so that I won't need to carry a step stool -- I hope. It is small, attached to the area by the bathroom and folds out of the way. I got mine on Amazon for under $40. And I was wondering if you carry a ladder for getting to the solar panels or how you clean them. Needless to say, I'm thrilled to have found your channel. Short single ladies, UNITE! Best of luck to you in your Hymer!

    • @storychasing
      @storychasing  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Allyson! Another Hymer owner!!! Oh that darn spare. Glad somebody else agrees with me! 🙂 No mods on the mattress but I thought it was way to firm as well. I thought of putting a mattress topper on it but those things are heavy and I honestly didn't want to deal with it. So I told myself I'd give it 3 months and see if I can adjust. I have successfully adjusted and my back is actually loving it. I think it also seems to be getting a less firm from just sleeping on it nightly. I'm actually super comfortable in it now and didn't think that would ever happen. Oh interesting about the step. My folding step is pretty small so it seems to work out, plus I use it for other things. I'm short. lol. I hope you enjoy your Hymer. Do you get out very much with it?

    • @snooks73
      @snooks73 6 лет назад +1

      I don't get out with it much yet. I'm still working. I thought I'd be retired by now but I have some work to do on my house and need the income for right now. ALSO, I'm having a lot of issues with the Ecotrek--as are many people on the facebook page dedicated to Aktiv. So you haven't had any issues? Lucky you. I will keep in touch and follow your progress. Happy Trails!
