I am 5’ 7” and have worn the palazzo paper bag pants for years. I have curves, but also a waist. I love them because they are so comfortable. They are definitely not for pear shapes or those without a waist definition. We never should dress for trends, but what suits our body type and our personality. ❤️. Sandra Hart .

      @regroovable 5 лет назад +15

Life Over Sixty With Sandra, you mention paper bag pants are not for pear shaped bodies.....on the contrary paper bag pants are very flattering on pear shapes as they accentuate the tiny waist and drape loosely over wider hips. Pear shapes have great waist definition and small bust lines and this makes them a good match for this style. 😃🍐

Dear Marie-Anne, I love your video :) I bought 2 Ganni Paper bag trousers. If you remove the belt that they come with and replace with with a contrasting colour wide leather belt then they look more flattering because the eye is drawn to the waist rather than the hips, stomach and bottom area.
They are also more flattering if you wear a body or tight fitting top rather than a baggy loose fitting blouse. This counteracts the bagginess of the trousers.
The top must always be tucked in so that your legs look longer.

These pants & skirts were around in the '80s. I had a silk crepe de chine skirt in ivory- it was great for travel! The lighter weight of fabric was key. The pants only work for 5'6" + otherwise it looks out of proportion- my opinion. Thank you again, Marie Anne!

Good point, Marianne. Gathered waists are on so many skirts. Most skirts that are labeled A-line or full are gathered and add volume at the waistline. That factor negates exactly what we want to achieve with skirts.

    Bonjour Marie-Anne
I’ve just invested in a beige pair of paperbag pants which tapper at the ankle and the waist is not too high, I had them taken in at the waist and I’m 5ft hourglass and they’re actually looking pretty good, I think it’s because they fit me perfectly and I’ve paired them with a wedge, not too high, a fitted tank and a nice slim belt. I have kept everything else very simple. I’m very surprised that they look so good on me. I believe the key to them looking decent is to make sure they fit with proportion otherwise they will look terrible.

Hello Marie-Anne, Thank you for your helpful videos! I am almost 72 and wear a size 8 pants WITH A FEW CAVEATS that possibly make me one of the few women who can wear paper-bag style pants with panache.
I am 5 ft. 51/2 inches with a long torso and short legs so the shorter paper-bag styles style fit me as regular length (more or less). I have a large bust that I keep well-contained w/ an appropriate bra style so I "present" as not as busty (38DD) as I actually am. I weigh 143 lbs. and have always walked and done exercises so I am in good shape but have muscular calfs so regular width slacks do not fit over my calves (sp?) and the paper bag style is a welcome option for me. Also although I have almost no hips I do have a bit of "muffin tummy" which makes conventional waisted slacks uncomfortably tight. I love the elastic waist in paperbag slacks and sometimes cut off the extra material above the waistline and cut off the sash tabs and don't use the sash.
However the key aspects for me in finding appropriate paper-bag-style pants are: (1) how much fabric is gathered into the elastic waist. and also how it is distributed along the waistband. I have found that less fabric equally distributed along the waistline looks the best on me, and (2) the fabric needs to be light for the best fit and look for me. (I did try on a pair of corduroy and a pair of denim paper-bag-style pants and let's just say they didn't work for me.)
(I have always like the look of the flowing palazzo style pants which has been around forever but w/ my short legs it's not a good look.)

With pants or skirts, I prefer no more than one and a half times my width. To avoid excessive fabric, try a 1/4" upper ruffle with a 1/4" casing for one drawstring at the center front or 2 drawstrings on either side.

I agree with everything you are saying about this style Marie-Anne . I've always loved the look but have had to admit that b/c of my stature and wider hips that they are not for me . Having said that I have seen younger women much larger than myself wearing them and didn't think they looked totally horrible on them . I guess we should aim for higher than 'not totally horrible' in any case .

Bonjour Marie - Anne, we call them "Marchewy" in Poland. It's the same as "Les carrots", but big carrots. It's not the diminutive, but opposite. I can't describe it other way, not sure if the word swelling is ok;) Have a nice day!

Oh haha, my immediate question was: what are paper bag pants? I have actually seen these since 2014. I saw them on a girlfriend of mine who is quite tall and thin (ballerina shape) in grey wool checkers with a loose white top and flats. She did look very chic I must say. However I couldn't understand how she could pair them with a blazer on or anything else as the waist was so distracting.

I have a long torso so I like this kind of high waste style. The belt makes the look feminine. I like to wear a sleeveless top with it to look narrower and longer.

😂😂 Thank you. The look on your face at the end says it all about this style!I think the key is to have them tailored to fit and flatter your body; the fabric type and design are very important, or one could look like a sack of carrots not a bag! I have two pairs of plain silk paper bag pants in navy and black. They are comfortable and smart at 30* to 35*C, suitable for the office, party or a meal with friends, or when one needs to cover up. They are light and convenient to pack when travelling; however, when I saw them on the hanger I was very skeptical and assumed they would be unflattering until I tried them on🤔. Heeled sandles, shoes or boots and accessories should be choosen very carefully. It's all about the proportions. I suspect your dog Coco growls at them😂.

I totally agree with you: that sort of paperbag waistline, whether in trousers or on a skirt, suits a woman with a long waist or body and who has an hourglass shape, a small bust, a flat stomach, slender hips and slender thighs and who is tall enough for such a design detail. The top needs to be tucked in and the paperbag waist would not look okay under a cardigan or under a lightweight jacket.

I've never been drawn to them, although they look good on the models. I just don't know when I would wear them: not practical for work (maybe not formal enough, too much ironing!), not suitable for many outdoor activities (not robust, easily ruined!), and what would I wear them with?! Like you say, most tops won't cut it, and what about footwear?? I'm tall and so I am mostly worried about what goes on at the ankle where trousers are concerned. I guess this is a cocktails on the terrace on a summer evening garment, to be worn with a crop top and strappy sandals, which somewhat narrows the field. I should perhaps just go and try a pair on for good measure.

It comes down to body type.
I have a pair of these. I am quite tall and slim and have very long legs so pants have always been extremely difficult for me to buy unless I get cropped pants which don't work in winter. I have a lot of jeans, but who wants to wear jeans every day? I also do not have a very big bust. And I am not a big fan of skirts, I prefer dresses.
I usually avoid belts and waist details, but these pants I have are navy (dark and slimming), and there is minimal extra fabric at the top.. I also always wear them with heels and a jacket so they don't really widen me so much.
This might not be the worlds best style but it solves a bit of a wardrobe problem that I have consistently had for years. People think long legs are a blessing, and they can be with a dress and heels, although a normal length dress usually looks short on me. It can be hard for me to find the right proportion in clothing because of this, Also, most pret-a-porter style proportions are not right for me. I used to make a lot of my own clothes because of this.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur Yes, fitted tops. You really can't wear them with anything else. Usually like a tank top with a more fitted jacket or a cardigan over it which covers the waistline and hits at the hip. This sort of negates the short torso thing.

Bonjour Marie-Anne, These only look good on the tall, slim and those with no hips. Your hair still so pretty. Great Video. Paper bag pants do look comfy, but a little bit tacky. They are VERY tricky to wear and I notice even coworkers, they look funny in them because they do not dress them right. I have one black pencil skirt with a ruched top, like a paper bag style, but with a belt and buckle and it looks fantastic on me.
