It's great that Meldhau sings, not that I'd suddenly expect him to burst into song in his own concerts but I like how Thile seems to bring out different colours in the people he works with.
Yeah but you can’t be a mehldau fan and not like the occasional folk or rock or country tune that he does! Brad loves to stretch his feet out on those limbs and I think give sonic space to some of his more meandering intellectual shit and also I mean, I think he just likes playing country folk. He does it more often than he plays a straight ahead blues. In fact I think it fills that musical purpose for him, in a way- similar aesthetic, pared down, fairly simplistic, similar relationship between the harmony and the melody/improv. Yeah, that’s my new theory. Instead of playing a blues like most normal jazz musicians, he puts on folk/blues concerts with Chris Thile.
Buddy I went down to Scarlet Town Ain't never been there before You slept on a feather bed And I slept on the floor Buddy, I don't mind a mean old time Or drinking my coffee cold But the things I seen in Scarlet Town Did mortify my soul I look at that deep well I look at that dark grave Ringing that iron bell In Scarlet Town today I spent some time in New Orleans And in Cairo on a bend But Scarlet Town a-brought me down As low as I ever been I look at that deep well I look at that dark grave Ringing that iron bell In Scarlet Town today I went on down to Scarlet Town And you promised you'd be my bride Then you left me here to rot away Like holly on a mountainside I look at that deep well I look at that dark gray Ringing that iron bell In Scarlet Town today Buddy you can hide in Scarlet Town For a hundred years or more But the man who knows what time it is Is knocking at the door So fare thee well, my own true love If you ever see me around I'll be looking through a telescope From hell to Scarlet Town I look at that deep well I look at that dark gray Ringing that iron bell In Scarlet Town today I look at that deep well I look at that dark gray Ringing that iron bell In Scarlet Town today
It's official. This dude, Chris Thile, has arrived on another level. He's now a musical contemporary to Brad Fucking Mehldau! You go, Chris, with your bad self! Whaaat?! Guy has completely obliterated my expectations out of the water. If you love music, and aren't catching this show from 6 to 8pm eastern on Saturdays, it is truly your loss.
Been a big fan of his for years, and I really love to hear reactions like yours. Hoping folks will listen to the new Prairie Home with an open mind. Of course it's changed but I can't imagine another host who'd carry on the legacy of the show (and yeah, adapt and expand on the platform) in a better way. Regardless, his musicianship and his guests' talent are tremendous.
If I only coud give a thumbs up every time I turn this on...
love Mehldau 's voice..:)
me too. didn't know he could sing.
Holy moly, this is incredible.
I adore this!
Holy shit that piano solo is fire!
It's too good!
Simply brilliant..
How much groovy feel can one song contain before it explodes?
Religious Meldhau fan, Dont normally go for this type of vibe.... and whoops that was quick.... its on heavy rotation.
a) same b) same ... Chris Thile changed my taste in music by braiding his with everything I already love! Check out Julian Lage's pieces!

Buddy I went down to Scarlet Town
Ain't never been there before
You slept on a feather bed
And I slept on the floor
Buddy, I don't mind a mean old time
Or drinking my coffee cold
But the things I seen in Scarlet Town
Did mortify my soul
I look at that deep well
I look at that dark grave
Ringing that iron bell
In Scarlet Town today
I spent some time in New Orleans
And in Cairo on a bend
But Scarlet Town a-brought me down
As low as I ever been
I look at that deep well
I look at that dark grave
Ringing that iron bell
In Scarlet Town today
I went on down to Scarlet Town
And you promised you'd be my bride
Then you left me here to rot away
Like holly on a mountainside
I look at that deep well
I look at that dark gray
Ringing that iron bell
In Scarlet Town today
Buddy you can hide in Scarlet Town
For a hundred years or more
But the man who knows what time it is
Is knocking at the door
So fare thee well, my own true love
If you ever see me around
I'll be looking through a telescope
From hell to Scarlet Town
I look at that deep well
I look at that dark gray
Ringing that iron bell
In Scarlet Town today
I look at that deep well
I look at that dark gray
Ringing that iron bell
In Scarlet Town today
SUBLIME!
who are the 3 f*****g guys who dislike? 3 genius I suppose?

Thile is in a zone. The Feb 11 PHC show was strong with talent and yes, the streamed shows are a must see.

Don't foget David Grisman...
Sean Havs lol.....that's a bit rough - his voice isn't that high, is it?

And the season finale next week. That went too fast.
I'm going back to look up that show !!!
I love the callback to Garrison. The music stands are chalked "PHC." And this guy Mehldau is just w0nky. Like .. wat w0nky.
damn that's swanky
I'll read it as I hear it.
Pretty good, apart from the singing.
