8:36 TaylorMade: just want to put this out here in case anyone is having trouble understanding TM's diagram. as it took me a pretty minute to figure out myself looking at it and scratching my head. TalyorMade's frame of reference is the shaft. they freeze the shaft in 3D space and have the head rotating around it --at least this is is what you need to visualize in order to understand why their diagram is showing the club face going open and closed around the clock. i actually appreciate that TM's published their diagram as it is..it tells me that they aren't trying to dumb things down for anybody, which is what the other manufacturers are doing when they hide the changes in Lie throughout the rotation and/or call it Draw/Fade.
Also...Titleist 18:13 why they would put Loft on the Y axis and Lie on the X axis instead of vice versa is completely beyond all understanding.

Great video. Also may want to cover which brands have ability to put different adapters on them to achieve different settings. For instance Golfworx sells "Tour" adapters that allow for different levels of adjustment than the stock adapters. I think they do it for TM and Callaway only. This means you have even more adjustability available to you with these brands than some of the lesser sold brands.
True. TM makes I believe a 1 degree tour version. The Callaway green dot version if I'm not mistaken is really just a left handed standard version as it offers 2 degrees down lofting and 1 up. Pretty sure that's how that one works.

Thanks for watching. Make sure you pay attention to impact position on the face when you do your testing as adjusting the hosel can result in different impact points and that can change launch and spin numbers dramatically.

@@jonathanbrown9245 It's a 2:1 ratio so 1 degree loft up will equal 2 degree closed face. I have found however that it's not always the case and depending on the brand and individual head some will present more of a change than others.

Great details. Thank you. Do you also have a video on how the weights (ex. with Titliest) for draw, fade and neutral effect the woods?
If a head has both a back weight and a sole weight closer to the face, putting the heavier weight in the back will tend to increase the loft and close the face. Putting the heavier weight towards the face will tend to decrease the loft and keep the face from turning over/closing. Changing where the heavier weight is can also change a golfer's swing timing. For example, I tend to swing a wood more like an iron. I do better with the weight closer to the face. However, I have to play my driver opposite my left toe to hit up on the ball and I have to close my stance slightly to compensate for the club path starting to come back towards me so late in my swing. I can't keep the club going straight at the target with a square stance and the ball off my toe. The closed stance is a compensation.
Great video again. But I did have one question concerning the rotation of the shaft. My question is how is the spine of the shaft changed in regards to the shaft potentially rotating during the adjustment? Additionally, how would the spine change affect the flight and launch of the ball? Thanks again.

How about the use cases of the adjustable hosel? just get once setup profile by adjusting at the pro fitter or adjusting on the fly depending on course conditions? etc...
I say on the course. I do not believe most golfers use the same swing when hitting into a screen indoors as they do out on the course. Therefore I would do it at the range ideally.

Great video(s). When science meet marketing hype! The 6/12 o’clock baseline difference between brands was surprising to me. Rotating the shaft and grip is pretty annoying, so Callaway (and perhaps Titleist) is ahead in the adjustment game here in my view. But after viewing your videos I would prefer that Callaway said “upright” instead of “draw based” as this is a more accurate description of the setting.
Yep. Some brands give you all the details and some dumb it down. I do also like the non rotating idea but I don't personally like how it makes the hosel so much fatter. Always distracts me a bit, especially the Callaway hosel.
I agree with you. I have both Taylormade and Callaway, and the Callaway is by far easier to understand to set it up. If I wanted a draw bias with less loft it was easy to set up. Not so sure about the Taylormade and will have to "trial and error" with that one.
Thanks for the very informative videos. I have a Srixon adjustable driver..but what I don't have is the Torx clubbed wrench that clicks when it is tight. Do you recommend getting one, or can I just use a regular torx socket & give it a good tighten by hand? (or is there a specific torque setting I need?) Thanx..keep the great videos coming.
The wrenches are usually set to 40 inch pounds of force. That is the number you want to hit.
Love the video. Great info. I have a TM sim 10.5 set completely neutral so therefore at a flat lie angle. How does that effect performance and how much does making adjustments effect things?
You would need to check if your lie angle is right in that flat setting. Use the sharpie line check to see. Also I would check out my Do Lie Angle Matter video to see how much it affects ball flight.

Changing lofts can make a big difference but you need to make sure you make contact in the same place on the face as changing the loft does actually move the face up and down slightly.

I'm a golf tech nerd. I would love to see a video that shows the actual measurements (loft, lie, face angle) for each setting for each manufacturer. Also, I've noticed that Callaway's hosel has a line on the ferrel. Does changing the position of that line affect the club head?
Might try that video at some point though I am worried that only you, me, and a couple other people would watch something that detailed.
The Callaway has a line I think because you don't actually rotate the shaft, only the cogs, so that means you keep the shaft in the same orientation at all times. The line is just there to reinforce that.
Great video AJ but one quick question how much does shaft length affect adjustability on drivers?
Shaft length may impact the dynamic lie angle of the club depending on how the change in length affects your setup and swing. A longer shaft very well may cause a more upright lie angle so depending on the brand of driver (ie a Ping or PXG), you may be able to cancel that out with the hosel adjustments.
Just watched this video, thanks. I have a Taylormade from a recent fitting. It’s 10.5 deg head + 1.5 clicks. Based on this video and reading literature, I also understand that means it’s closed. If I understand your 1st video, you are point out face angle is sort of irrelevant because we will grip the club naturally in a neutral position. Is that a correct take away? Or will my current face angle promote a left ball fight?
@EFGMC Hi AJ. I keep coming back to these 2 videos (Part 1 & 2) to clarify/correct misinformation I keep reading on-line. One question that seems to attract a lot of oposing answers is "what happens if I use a LH adjustable hosel in a RH head?". I was under, what I now believe to be an erroneous assumption, that if I put a RH head on a LH hosel ALL the setting would be reversed, including the effect on lie angle. Can you do a detailed explanation of what really happens, to clear that up please?
Very comprehensive AJ, one question, which might seem a little off track, but when you adjust any of the drivers, can this have any effect whatsoever on the height of tee you should use?
Paul, not off track at all as someone else just made similar comments noting that the entire face does move around when lofting up or down. Lofting up raises the face which could result in lower face contact. Face roll would dictate that the loft is now lower since you would be making contact lower in theory. You are also moving the CG lower in this case as the back end of the club drops.
Not sure in the end if these changes cancel out the adjustable loft change assuming your contact point with the ball remains a constant distance from the ground??
Probably makes sense to play around with tee height, at least if you don't see a height change initially after making a hosel adjustment.
I have a right hand cobra adaptor on my left hand speedzone head. If i want to lower the loft with -1.5 , should i actually set the hozzle to +1.5 because it is a right hand adaptor?
Great video thanks ! One question about the Callaway.... Ive heard that Callaway is the only brand that when changing the loft (up or down) it does not affect the face angle. is that correct? Taylormade and pinf especially with the increased loft close the face angle quite a bit and vice versa. Thanks
Every brand will have the face angle movement with loft changes. Depending on the sole design, it may be less in some brands, but it does happen. Callaway just dumbs down the info they provide to the consumer, focusing on loft and draw/neutral flight. They just choose not to bring up the other stuff.

Would really appreciate if you could do some actual measurements using the Callaway Sleeve with the head bound in a vice. I did a little measuring at the Cog difference between the difference in Connection Height along the back of the shaft comparing (Neutral + Standard Loft) to (Draw + Standard Loft) {with Neutral & Draw being 180-degree opposite so makes sense} and it appears to be 1/32nd of an inch - using some Trig this gives me an Angle of 3.5-Degrees (which is close to the Taylormade Setup). What I did find interesting was that the difference when Comparing (Neutral +2) & (Neutral -1), again, +2 & -1 being on opposite sides of the same cog, that there doesn't appear to be any Length Difference along the Shaft so the Lie Angle appears to be the same with ONLY the Loft Tilt affected as I know for sure when experiment you can see more Toe-IN or OUT - something I don't think I was expecting and certainly different than Taylormade where any rotation of the shaft is always accompanied by a movement Up or Down the Lie Angle (they disclose this as well) - now maybe it's so small to be immeasurable and my eyes are somewhat not as good as they were. Thanks in advance if you are up to it.
You are correct that the lie is identical in the 2 loft up or 1 down. Shaft is in the 9:3 o clock plane and will have the same lie in either. Callaway gives you a total of 3 degrees in any plane. However they do a good bit of rounding and leaving off of details to just focus on big picture changes when you look at the descriptions. No different from how Ping and Cobra treat it.
Should also be noted that because of face roll, these numbers get even harder to measure.
I’ve noticed that on the Mizuno adaptor, the female housing to accept the torque wrench bolt is off centered. I always assumed that this is why there is a discrepancy in the total adjustability between loft and lie.
Hmmm. Might need to get my magnifying glass out. What driver are you using? I have a ST190. Not sure if this is how they have been labeling things for a awhile or just on the newest ones.
Other thing is they use the designation e loft in the description which again raises some flags.
Hi, I have a Ping G30 10.5 and have adjusted it down to 9.9, which having now watched this and your previous video helps explain (at least one reason) why I've been slicing more drives recently. My question is though, if I adjust it back to 10.5 obviously that will get the lie angle back to 12 o'clock, but if I then add loft, will the effect of moving the balance point of the head to be more closed on impact have more of an effect than the fact the adjustment will be shallowing the lie angle again? So basically, will I - in theory - slice it less if I leave it at 10.5 or increase it to 11.1/11.5? Great video though, thank you for explaining it all.
That's a great question. You for sure have how this all works down!
The lie angle change that we are talking about is obviously pretty small. Assuming you make the max loft change, we would see a lie angle change of 1.5 degrees. What that equates to is around .14 degrees of face angle change (ie extremely small). That would probably equate to around maybe 3 yards offline at 280 yards. More likely the issue is with the head falling open at setup and you not quite getting it squared back up before impact.
Of course this is all academic right now because those small changes in how the driver looks at different hosel settings can cause you to swing differently and impact the results.
Best thing to do is just go out to the range with your wrench and try both settings with 10 balls. Hopefully that provides the answer.

On Callaway Opti fit,. You also have right and left options. Could you please give some more information about that.
I think you're talking about the face angle changes that I didn't get into in this video but yes, if you loft up you will cause the head to close at setup and vise versa. If you don't align the face to your target at that point, you will have a driver that starts left or right of intended target.
Hands down the most informative (on a technical level) golf channel! I have one big unanswered question, I know that the face angle also changes when you rotate the shaft as in my case Ping G425, but the one thing no one details, the manufacturers don't even reference it at all, is the amount of face angle change! With all of your experience you must have at least a rough guesstimate of face angle/loft change right?! If I adjust my ping to Small - (-1°) the face opens, but how much 1°, 2°, 3°???
Actually I just read the comment below mine and you give the exact answer! Seriously you deserve a Pulitzer!
I have measured this before but it's never a number that I end up using. Main reason is I can take two different golfers with differing set up positions and get different face angle measurements. Also differences in sole design and grass consistency will again change the amount. Also how a head sits in grass vs how it sits on my spec gauge. That is why I always use the assumption in these hosel videos that the golfer will address the ball with a square face to the target regardless of how the club may want to fall. You could of course simplify this a bit more and just say that the golfer must keep the face at the same angle regardless of hosel adjustments. This is because some golfers always set up with an open or closed face at address.
For me at least, it's the recognition that this is happening when you make any adjustments that is the important part.
@@EFGMC you know I've experimented with different holds at address to neutralize the face, of course I'm not consistent enough to see a flight difference, it's more about being in my own head. However, I remember a video a while back, years actually, I believe by mark crossfield where he stayed that you only actually achieve the loft change if you sole the club, and if you square the club face, you effectively also undo the loft adjustment. Now, it has been a while and I could be way off about the details of what he said, but does that ring true in your experience?
@@awolmartinez So it doesn't matter if you sole the club or not. Only important thing is to keeps the face square or at least consistently in the same place. This is one of those topics where probably only 1% really understand it. On top of that, you have the old clubmakers like Tom Wishon who don't like to recognize the loft change and instead only view it as a face angle change. I would watch both the Tom Wishon video on adjustable hosels and my original video on this subject to get the two points of view. Personally I think mine is right but at least you will get both sides of the coin. Here is my video incase you haven't seen it. This is probably out of the depth of anyone else on RUclips if we are being realistic.

You said ping starts at 12 o’clock. Also you said that is the most upright- so all adjustments from there will be more flat. That makes total sense. My question is why would they have what they call “flat” settings on their hosel? Or is that extra flat or something? Everyone always makes a big deal that they can go flat with theirs.
Ping basically says everything hosel wise on the upper hemisphere of that clock face (9 to 3) is standard lie. If you rotate to any position below that (ie 4:30 to 7:30 since there are 8 total positions available), they call that flat.
So yes, they are in fact all flatter then the starting position but that's not a good thing to highlight, at least in terms of marketing.
currently watching the video. but is there any influence on strike location for hosel adjustments? adding loft rolls the crown of the club back causing low strikes on the head etc...
I had that exact thought when I did the first adjustable hosel video and had the head in the spec gauge! Definitely should at least on paper since as you said it rolls the head back.
However the other side of that is you are also now lowering the cg since the back end of the head has dropped. So do the two equal out? Are you actually not changing anything with your dynamic loft since the increase in loft lowers the strike point on the head and the roll of the face results in a lower loft closer to the sole?
Probably best bet is it will be golfer dependent.
Very cool. So how do the new universal adapters works since they allow you to fit into all the different OEM’s you listed? They seem to use different cogs for each OEM but some of them don’t use cogs and some do. Do you loose some adjustability with these types of adapters compared to the ones the OEM’s use?
Just depends on what angle the shaft enters the adapter at. Greater angle = greater amount of adjustability. Then it just depends how many positions the adapter is set up for, which also determines the amount of change.
@@EFGMC I haven’t gotten one yet but going to order as one is called All-Fit and it’s made in China. They will have a US seller sometime this week as I’ve heard the shipping is expensive as they only do expedited shipping from China. Anyway, they allow all of the OEM to work with just different cogs. They don’t seem to have as many adjust,wants as some (Titleist) but about the same as others (Callaway). Just didn’t know if using the cogs would make the club play differently than the ones that just turn as it doesn’t seem as you get an many selections like TM. Guess it just means the lie/loft combinations will be slightly less but I would do that trade off if it works. I’ve spent too much money buying aftermarket shafts for every new head each year. Would be much easier and less expensive than full clubs each year.
This is some great information; however, anyone wanting to know how adjustable drivers actually work (I.e. - what information big brands aren’t telling you about adjustable hosels) needs to watch Tom Wishon’s video on the subject.

I probably should apologize here for my initial comment. I didn’t mean to insinuate any information you are putting out is incorrect, it’s good information. I simply meant to get your take on the linked information from Tom. Is it incorrect because he’s biased or because it’s actually false info?
He’s not wrong. It comes down to 2 differing views on how you look at what’s going on with the hosel adjustment. Many older club builders and designers like to look at it as just a face angle adjustment. The club OEMs now focus primarily on loft as do I based on a square face. I personally think every club should be measured with a square face otherwise you invite all sorts of variables into this. Squares face measurements means more accurate measurements.
Tom is extremely smart but we have differing views on this. I think my view is right but you may not agree, and that is okay too. I think my video is the best explanation
As a left hander if I get a used shaft from a RH club will all settings just need to be flipped 180*? Cobra Adapter specifically
Lofts will be flipped, lie angles will not. Switching from the base setting on Cobra to upright setting, will result in upright still.
Very good video....My issue is if somoene had a theoretically perfect face to path swing (straight ,0 deg)...what would 2deg upright or flat have in reality? Also I have Srixon 565 9.5 deg stamped on the head...at 9.5 or even 10.5 deg I hit stinger height...no other driver does that at same loft....could the srixon be lower loft than what is stamped on the head? Thanks
Srixon head could be different loft from stamp. Have never measured a Srixon so don't really have a point of reference. I would also pay attention to impact location on face as that can make a huge difference in launch characteristics.

@@EFGMC Thanks for the reply...I am very obsessed over strike location in general...even high center strikes are not as high as one would expect....If anything the ball tends to fall out of the air ( maybe too low spin)...I am comparing it to cobra LTD same shafts...subsequently the LTD cracked on the crown...so Im stuck with the 565 and cannot afford a replacement...In saying all that my total distance is pretty good...just a massive problem to launch over tree lined dog leg fairways. Thanks
@@wesleyfontaine3438 Sounds like it might be lower lofted than stamped. Would need to measure it or get on a launch monitor to see what the dynamic loft is.
Cheap possible fix option would be to add a little lead tape to the back of the head on the sole. Might give you a bit more loft and spin assuming the SW change doesn't mess you up. Might not work, but it's cheap and removable if it doesn't.
@@EFGMC I just already added weight in the form of washers under the back weight about 6 grams....I just finished a few min ago swopping shaft from miyazaki x stiff to an old taylormade r7 stiff shaft..maybe it will make it more playable ...will test tommorow....Thanks again for your effort.
So when i adjust my cobra, the grip alignment is basically turned 90deg down, so if i put my hands on the grip alignment then the club head is pointing straight up, so after adjusting the hosel, do i just adjust the shaft and head to the correct position
If you have settled on a setting other than the factory default, you may just want to regrip the club with a new grip that is correctly in line with that hosel setting you chose.
I’m new to golf and my driver is the titleist tsi2. If I have more of a slice, do I adjust the setting to more of a draw? Thanks
Yes. A3, B3, or D3 would be the setting. A3 would give the post possible help with a slice.

Callaway and Titleist are the only two I can think of. However they have both been using this design for a while so you can usually find some older models out there that are less expensive.
Might try the Callaway Pre Owned website. They often have sales and the condition of what they sell is always better than I expect it to be.

Can you re shaft an adjustable driver with a regular shaft/hosel as the head should be the std diameter and parellel. Yes ??? I assume the adjusters are all in the shaft not in the head. If so what will loft lie and face angle be ??? Please respond to this question !!!
You need the adapter or an adapter. The head hosel diameter is pretty huge to accommodate the adapter so you can't just epoxy a shaft in.
You can find less adjustable hosels that allow for smaller degrees of change with some brands. You can also find 3rd party adapters that don't change anything when rotated and just install the shaft with no angle at all. What this will do the the loft and lie will be brand specific to where the starting point is on that particular club. Taylormade starts out in that flattest 6 o clock position, so a neutral adapter would result in 2 degrees more upright but no loft change, for example.
I have a Sim Max Driver. The rubber washer was shred from tightening the screw. Can I use the screw without a rubber washer or with that mess up the driver?
I believe the washer is just there to keep the screw from falling out of the head. Plenty of drivers don't use any rubber washer so I wouldn't worry.

Can you remove the cog female receiver and instal on a TayorMade driver thus adjusting only the head and not the shaft maintaining same lie?
Only Callaway and Titleist use a cog system.
Great video! About the Taylormade - are the .355, .350 and .335 driver adapters shaft specific or shaft and head specific? Was contemplating trying out another shaft but it's a .335 and the current adapter is .350. Will a .335 adapter fit the head?
You got me on this one. I'm not sure as it will also depend on the ages of the adapters, since TM has switched the design a few times since they originally came out with them.
My gut says it would fit if from the same time frame but please don't quote me on that!

I went with the Foretra adapter ( because it was Amazon Choice) and it fit the head and shaft fine. There was no specific mention of fitting the RBZ Black Driver but it says it fits M1 thru M5

which mizuno setting has the flattest lie angle?
Standard = 56 degrees
So how would you adjust a mizuno 3 wood?
Same rules except I think the adapter is set at 3 degrees total change instead of 4.
Nike Covert had the best version (not biased as was involved in the company that sold it to them)
Trying to rebuild a Nike Vapor Speed driver for a friend. But can't find a single video or written piece about building one. Nor can I find any info on working with the adaptors for the Nike Vapor series drivers. Have you worked with these before?
I haven't. Believe it's just a standard 2 degree angle adapter much like Taylormade or Mizuno drivers.

i have a question, does pureing a adjustable driver, and fairway woods does make sense or is just a waste of time and money?
Personally don't think shaft alignment is ever worth the time or money. Did one video on it and have more planned. If you use the adjustable hosel then an aligned shaft will not be aligned once you make any adjustments. Unless you use a Callaway since their adapter does not rotate the shaft.

I thought for a cog system like Callaway has that if you change the loft then you don't change the face angle but for someone like Taylormade when you increase the loft you close the face and when you decrease the loft you open the face?
They all do the same thing. The cog just allows them to not rotate the shaft and grip. Callaway just dumbs it down for people and only focuses on the loft and refers to lie as draw or neutral. Cobra and Ping do the same thing. Taylormade, Mizuno, and Srixon give you all the info and let you digest it all yourself.

@@EFGMC For G425 driver if you put a left handed shaft in a right handed head are the settings just reversed? Would neutral be the same or would it be the flat 0 on the opposite side of the shaft?
@@hbyrdut The loft settings will be reversed, lie angle won't change.

So if one never let's the club sit on the ground and you assume the person will always square the club face. How is the face angle changed when changing the loft?
Then the face angle would always be zeroed out and the loft change would be spot on.

@@golfish8589 Yes, if you square the face you won't see face opening or closing, just the loft as specified on the sleeve.
Why is it not like it was when I was growing up where they just took a still shaft and stuck a persimmon head on it and they never told you the flex or the loft
What about the tendency of manufacturers to return to glued shafts seems like that will put a dent in the fitting business and ability to adjust clubs
I'm not sure any manufacturer is going to go back any time soon. It's big business and they make extra money selling adapters and the shaft makers are in favor of it also. Would be good for clubmakers though if everyone went back to bonded.

Can't you just turn the club on your hands and regrip the club to create the same effect ?
Face angle yes, loft would require holding a forward or backward press with your hands at impact.
