I could feel my heart drop into my stomach when Tommy laid there dying saying "you shot me, you really shot me" people get shot every day and the boy had nowhere to go but to turn outlaw I can understand that. But he was still just a boy.

Well, that and if Chisum didn't send any extra men, it was just Pat and a useless drunkard up against Billy and his crew. And even though the crew never grew very big, Billy was always willing to recruit. So, it made sense to give him some proper backup.
