This is the most underrated encounter of the Late Republic. An extremely well informed Germanic leader gives Caesar legitimate pause while he flips the script by forcing a battle before Ariovistas thinks it should be fought. Not again until the 5th century would any foreign leader be able to have spies in the heart of the empire. Though I've always wondered if Parthia employed strategic espionage in Rome's eastern holdings.
Your explanation of the motivations behind the actions of the various players in this history, especially the financial ones, fills in a lot of missing blanks left open by preceding [popular] histories of this era and is most refreshing! At last. the full story is told! Keep it up. 😉👍📜📚
Thank you! That was, and continues to be my goal, to change our understanding of who these people were, by filling in some of the blanks. And while I don’t believe it’s the full story, just because there are still so many gaps in the historical record, it’s a full-er story LOL which hopefully demonstrates that, as much as we love or hate Caesar, he, Pompey, Cato, Cicero, etc....they were all just the Trump, Pelosi, and Schumers of their day.
Thanks for another great video with all the info u don’t here about keep it up bro this is the premiere Roman history channel on all of RUclips ain’t no channel can match it...
Will you mention that it was Caesar himself who invented the name German? He saw the Gauls and 'Germans' as the same people. But the German/Gaul people in Gaul had mixed with the Celts already there centuries before hand. So the name 'German' in Latin means genuine, pure, authentic. As Caesar saw the Gaulish people in Germany as a 'purer' breed, not mixed with the Celts.
It’s a possibility that that subject may come up during a video, but it has to happen organically for me - or be a specific point which drove or divided Rome’s politics at the time, if that makes any sense? This is why I tend to use the names we understand today, as opposed to how the Romans viewed everyone (Gaul/Celt/German), and anglicized versions of the names instead of the hard pure Latin of Kikero and Kaiser - because I’m trying to demonstrate how the events all tied together, driving Rome towards her Imperial destiny and, despite so many commenters trying to teach me how to properly pronounce Cicero or Pompey, it doesn’t specifically change the role they played in Rome’s ultimate journey.
I swear I'm gonna stop with the music partisanship but as a proactive suggestion, what about some of the leader theme music from old civilization games?
I appreciate the suggestions, but I’m not really a fan of the old Roman musics from video games (I usually turn music off in videos games LOL). Additionally, I am limited only to music which belong in the public domain and aren’t copyrighted. So I have a somewhat restricted list of music I am permitted to use.

Just about done with youtube. Yeah, yeah, I love it that you continually replay the video I just watched. Yes, Google, we love watching the same video over, and over. Hey, here's a suggestion, try playing a video we didn't just watch. Must be at least 50 I have downloaded. No, you're right. Replaying the same video over whenever "auto" is enabled is a winning strategy! Let me know how that works out.
Or….. you could let us know how it works out when you actually take these complaints to youtube and google, as we have no control over how their algorithms work or which videos they decide to suggest to you, or que up when you have “auto” turned on. Not exactly sure why you’ve chosen our channel to place this rant. We put out a video you didn’t watch every 4 to 5 days, beyond that, we have no control.
Never heard this level of detail your historical recounts are incredible.
Please don’t stop!

You make some of the more complex social interactions of the ancient world more understandable and digestible. Love the content!
Ah ariovistus, if only you knew how far Caesar was willing to go to justify his conquest of Gaul..
How many German speakers do you know names Ariovistus? Zero? Correct. It's not a germanic name. Ariovistus is not germanic.
@@zipperpillow yeah cause thats a romanization of the name harjafristaz, you polish sub human.
@@darius9329 So wrong. Dream away. Ario=Aryan (Indo-European), Vis=Wysz (Vision/foresight), -us=Latinization. Obviously not "Germanic", sorry.

and thus the joke from the legio 10 was born with this. :P ah i like this already :D
The germanic speakers didn't ride horses, they ate them for food, like big dear. This shows that Ariovistus was not a "native germanic speaker".
Nah Slavs where in Ukraine while this was happening
Five hundred years later, the Seubi conquered northwest Spain.
