[Lyrics]
After the war and now that they've sent us homeward
I can't help but feel that I'm on my own
No one can see just what this conflict has done to
The minds of the men who are on their way home
I'm scarred for life but it's not my flesh that's wounded
So how can I face the torment alone
The vivid scenes and all the recurring nightmares
I lay there and sweat until it gets light
People say don't worry, say that time's a perfect healer
That the nightmares they will come to pass
Can't hear what they're saying, I am living in my own world
And I'm feeling trance-like all the time
I hear voices in my head, could I really be going crazy
In the night the visions seem so real
Do you care if you live or die, when you laugh are you really crying
You're not sure what's real anymore
Fortunes of war, fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, no pain anymore
Fortunes of war, fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, no pain anymore
Fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, no pain anymore
Fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, no pain anymore
Fortunes of war, fortunes of war
Fortunes of war, no pain anymore
Fortunes of war
Sometimes I wake, I feel that my spirit's broken
I wonder if I've the strength ... to carry on
Carry on

'Fortunes Of War ' is a song from Iron Maiden's album '''The X Factor'',released in 1995.
'Fortunes Of War' describes the mental anguish of a soldier returning from war - the nightmares, the voices, and the terrible memories. It makes a good counterpart to 'Afraid To Shoot Strangers' which describes the anguish of a soldier who is about to go off to war. It can also be linked to 'The Aftermath', although it hasn't got the same historical specificity and is delving in the dark thoughts of any soldier returning from any conflict of the 20th Century onward.
Steve Harris describes accurately what goes through the minds of those who fought when they are returned to civilian life and face those who only saw the conflict from afar: "I can't help but feel that I'm on my own, no one can see just what this conflict has done to the minds of the men who are on their way home." The feelings of misunderstanding and loneliness are heightened by contact with people who, as hard as they may try, simply cannot understand what an ordeal like combat can do to someone, and it is only natural that those who fought often seek their former comrades-in-arms in order to once again be surrounded by those who lived through the same hell and who understand. Those are mentally "scarred for life" and all too often have to face the aftermath alone, "the vivid scenes and all the recurring nightmares."
Those who have never been confronted to a combat situation dish out the usual banalities that "time's a perfect healer, that the nightmares they will come to pass" but they never really do. Most veterans end up "living in [their] own world" and often question their sanity ("Could I really be going crazy?"). Strength of character and sometimes professional help can provide the former combattants with the appearance of a "normal" life and put aside those mental scars, a necessary requisite to "carry on."
'The X Factor' is the tenth studio album by Iron Maiden, released in 1995. It is the band's first album to include Blaze Bayley, formerly of Wolfsbane, as vocalist, replacing Bruce Dickinson who left the band following their previous tour to pursue a solo career.
The album title came about in the early part of the recording. According to producer Nigel Green:
"We all felt that the way things were progressing - the songs, Blaze's new involvement, the sound, the commitment - the new album really would have that extra quality, that bit of magic, that X Factor. This became the working title for the album and we liked it, so we kept it. It is also very apt as this is our tenth studio album and "X" can bring up many images."
Supporting the album was the X Factour tour. Much like the tour for their following album, Virtual XI, it was cut short after Blaze suffered a violent allergic reaction to certain elements used on the stages where the band performed.
This is the second album (Piece of Mind being the first) that did not have a title track on it, as well as the first album to not feature the album title in any of the song lyrics.
I don´t care what other Maiden fans will think, I love the dark era of the Maiden, the albums, and the voice of Blaze simply grabs my heart and soul and won´t let it go...He got massive critic for joining them and I don´t think he deserved it, at all. I know what an amazing singer he really is, and I believe he did a fantastic job to keep them going when Bruce wasn´t around....
I totally agree with you, X-Factor and Virtual XI are my favourite Iron Maiden albums
@@Katiriaa84 well Bruce was getting more and more popular as he went back to doing metal albums accident of birth and chemical wedding were received very well by fans and certainly played to bigger crowds than blaze, blaze some nights plates to about 50 people, very sad coz blaze albums are awesome and he puts on great live shows, he should be as big as Alice Cooper and ozzy and they are not great singers, just because he struggled on a few Bruce songs people think he can't sing which is wrong it's maidens fault for not using him properly and tuning to his voice if they had done so he would have awesome and who knows he might still be there.
@@alexjohnston8889 I couldn't put it better in words, really.
@@alexjohnston8889 I LOVE him, his voice, his lyrics his phenomenal shows !! To be honest I will NEVER understand why Maiden forced him to sing all the classics, he was struggling to sing theese high notes he never could reach, furthermore he was unable to hear the guitar players well enough, so he failed. I started out as a Maiden fan but when I read all theese downright insulting comments about this guy, I listened carefully and the result was that I became a Blaze fan aswell. Maybe even more since I believe that Bruce would sing in a lower key since he´s getting older, every voice changes with age, it´s natural, so why not use his older voice instead of screaming the notes he hit when he was younger, without any effort? If Blaze gives a concert within my reach, even for a crowd of twenty people, I wouldn´t go to be first in line, I would be running, and that´s a promise !!
Best era
this album is underrated just because bruce doesnt sing here. those songs are masterpieces same as others. what you hear in brave new world and dance of death albums is what was born right on this album
I Totally agree with your opinion.
And therefore you are an honorable youtube guitar player !
My favorite song from the X-Factor album. This band is so great....
Blade Of Spirit - Fortunes Of War (Iron Maiden cover)
my favourite song also , how can anyone boo it, i'd have kicked him out, or just kicked his head in
daves guitar part in the beginning so fucking good
X Factor is for sure one of the best Iron Maiden' albums, i saw them on that tour in Italy, Blaze was the perfect singer for that album and tour, long life to Iron and Blaze.
what a PERFECT album was THE X-FACTOR. lot of people hate it. for me its a MASTERPIECE.5/5 and UP THE IRONS.
for me too man... somehow more "simple", but right on spot! - "after the war left feeling no one has won...."
@@nextphase7675 I’m so glad everytime i find X-factor fans. Up the Irons!
@Celestial Dragoness No prayer for the dying it’s a perfect album aswell from the 90’s. up the Irons!
This dark era was just incredible in the Maiden...I love the songs, the albums and the voice of Blaze had a tremendous impact to their music ....theres only one thing to say: BRAVO BLAZE !!!
THIS is METAL...the TALENT, the GIFT, and look at them: so wild, raw and punchy performing with all their fierce power, fury and passion.....even if this era is vastly underrated we can still hear echoes in their later music, and NOBODY sings theese songs better than Blaze, NOBODY !!
Can't believe someone booed at the mention of fortunes of war , its a great song
the issue is that the voice sounded very limited in this part. I will said he's voice was pretty low here. can reach the notes. But eit I may be wrong
AWESOME !!!
BEST BAND EVER
The X factor, will forever be one of my favorite Maiden albums.
Great song, great album
WOW, this gentle slow intro and the blistering music and ever so mindblowing lyrics.....listen, just listen to the power of his voice !! THIS is the real deal, heavy metal, or any metal and my love and admiration towards theese guys is getting deeper by the minute !!! I simply LOVE the voice of Blaze !!!
This album is truly amazing. No doubt, one of my top 5, along with Seventh Son, AMOLAD, Brave New World and Number of the Beast.
I'd love having Maiden playing some stuff from the X Factor with Bruce during the BOS tour.
Well..............
Maiden have brought Sign of the Cross back on their current tour
They brought back Sign of the cross for the legacy of the beast tour
Sign of the cross and The Clansman. I hope that 2 things happen however:
-Invite Blaze for a tour where they perform the rest of his songs that never were performed live;
-Make a studio re-recording of both The X Factor and Virtual XI with Bruce
For me it’s also starting to grow on me, I’m slowly falling in love with some of the songs on there
E o grito do Nicko em 3:03 e em 3:53??? YEEEEEEEEEAAAHHHHH!!!!! sensacional..!!!
+R Castanheira sera? kkkk
I think that may have been Blaze
Great Blaze and excellent song!
5:35 The single drum pedal of Nico is amazing 😨
X-Factor is in the top-3 of Maiden albums.
Grand Blaze is amazing!
His voice so brutal, dark and lyric!
X-Factor is pure Masterpiece!
i love blaze and the x factor!!!!!!!!!!!
@@maxfernandez1808 no creo
Blaze did a great job here. This is a wonderful song from a terribly underrated album. Janick's part in the beginning was great, but (and this might just be me) I think he entered one beat too early.
"People say don't worry, say the times are perfect healer,
that the nightmare they'll come to pass"
If Bruce was to of sung this it would of been one word legendary !
i agree. I think it has a very interesting "dark" sound.
The dark Blaze Bayley 🌑🖤
Great sonho
Amazing voice
I'm with you... It's a very solid album in all terms, nice low vocal tones, powerful guitars, hard and consistent drums and a very tricky and complex bass line in all songs... Definitely one of their best...
THAT WAS MY FIRST CONCERT, GOOD SHOW.....
Blaze is a great singer. He's not as good as Bruce but a great singer. His solo career is awesome
I love Bailey! This guy acted bravely💪 it was big shoes to fill. He is an amazing singer and IM was clever enough not to take someone who sounded like Bruce.
Brave Bayley 💪
blaze very brutall
There were some strong tracks off this album. This one is great.
I would say, none of them were bad
Uno de los mejores discos de Maiden aunque no sea políticamente correcto decirlo, muchas canciones buenas en este disco no veo ni una mala, las mejores the sign of the Cross, fortunes of war, look for the truth, jugdment on Heaven
The x factor good exelent in chile 1996 ❤
Masterpiece
Pure and raw metal!! one of the best iron maiden's album
FOTOS DE AMOR, FOTOS DE AMOR.. FOTOS DE AMOR, NO PAIN ANYMORE!
@maidenwildM surely, one of the best of 90s!!!
I never could stomach the term "metal" when it comes to Maiden. To me it always felt like something else, superior. This thing however, IS metal. I love Blaze, always had and always will. After this, he is even greater in my eyes/ears. Looks like Danzig but meaner, weird stage presence, *actually* interacting with the audience non-stop; almost like an obsession, awesome performance-especially the intro. Damn this is cool! Love ya dude, you kicked ass with Maiden. If only they lowered the tuning and kept it that way... * sigh * but i guess they couldn't just "go simple and dark" for much longer, considering their previous achievements. * sigh * x2 No sweat though, we are few, but our respect is stronger. Oh, and Up the goddamn Irons!
Buena canción un clásico.
Amazing track!
wow what a great description boy
blaze is awesome like he's voice XD...
very true, its dark and unigue sound
STEVE HARRIS THE GO DOF BASS GUITAR
YESSS
your description for the album says it all! up the irons Beto!
0:48 the one guy who booos fuck that guy, this song rules
Chile loves UK
x factor was the era of bold'er and thick'er iron maiden...
In Maiden what is delicate is their sense of going against the 1/4 notes and coming back... the drums are to follow like metronome in there heads..Wow,, Their are on Three Great Bands in the World, Led Zepplin, Iron Maiden, Dimmu Borgir....
Ah ah, not Dimmu dude.
that meant to be Megadeth before and then borgir for theit melody
no never, In fact For me these are Great bands because their Tunes have marked the World, and no one can do same as they do, and Led is the best in his Category as well as maiden and borgir,,,you like it or not these are the three best bands in the world...
Steve Harris is the diference
UP The Iron !!
👍👍👍🤘
Music for real men, by real men!
sorry to disappoint you but it´s REAL music for REAL women too...
of corse blaze is totally different than bruce but X factor and Virtual XI were perfect with blaze. But I prefer bruce singing!
5:55 Ohh si tocara bajo, Harris seria mi dios
Obra prima
Martelos
3:30 Is is me or is Dave playing that lick a little bit off tempo? He's entering a bit too early
just in time
Iron maiden - is fucking better band of heavy...
If you search for images about soldiers faces before and after the Iraq war you'll see what is this song talking about...
Poznato?⚡⚡⚡⚡🇭🇷☯️😇
Someone booed at the start lol
3:03
Jajajajajajaja "EL GRAN COMENTARIO"
Geez, I like Blaze, a lot... but he was tone deaf here or something... maybe his voice was already weak.
he had vocal problems during this tour after being forced to sing songs that were out of his natural register
Matti Smit
I didn't know that. I always thought Maiden played only songs with low range vocals with him or songs that could be lowered to his tone, like The Trooper.
The only reason people like Blaze is because they can sing their songs because his voice is so low, but he can't sing shit, he even goes off key very often in his own songs like this one, a shitty shitty shitty singer. The X Factor had a bunch of great musical moments but the vocals were pure shit. And Maiden is my favorite metal band by the way. Up the Irons!

@AFABIANO1
atleast try to write properly in english, im 14 and im portuguese and i speak alot better than you, still i dont know how old you are or where you come from but still, if you want to get your point across, speak better
and i happen to think that Blaze is great, not as good as Bruce, but The X Factor is probably their best album in my opinion
Sreća? boga mi velika ajjjuh. kako za koga. My American frend no shit and bulshit .who ol life i'st Lucky this mann born Lucky Ocky?
Blaze no despega jamás.
what the hell i have to read here ... x factor and virtual x masterpieces ? then number, piece, powerslave what are ? Bailey sings always in the same way, same tone, no high notes, nothing !
Blaze always looked really awkward on stage and out of his depth.
Blaze just comes off to me as a guy that can't sing😐
I love the two X and XI studio albums and his Wolfsbane albums too but I agree that at some parts in this song he sounded a bit out of tune for me too (like it was too deep for him). It is strange because I heard a few live songs where he performed with the deeper notes better than Bruce later (for example the Clansman).
He doesn't even sound remotely good on his own songs.
