    What if you used a fan in each engine?(may help in place of vert stabilizers). Reduce the control angles. Use counter rotation on motors to reduce yaw effect. I think you are close to a good controlled flight X-wing.

    Really cool. I want one.
    I think that in a perfect world, a fly by wire system paired with thrust vectoring would solve much of your vertical stability problem. Essentially let the astro-mech deal with it. Then you would fly it fast but not turn it fast to avoid the balance problems inherent with having all the mass on the back. In the video, it kept stalling in slow speeds and tight turns especially as you added the weight from the rudders. With so much weight at the back it became too heavy to break the stalls, leading to some flat spins.
    If it were real, it would be more of a long range missile plaform rather than a dogfighter. Which is kinda how they used them in the original movie. They were fast, able to take a hit and able to deliver guided munitions.
    Thanks for the vid guys Loved it.

    The X-wing configuration is very interesting aerodynamically. It actually does have some vertical stabilization. During my undergrad I investigated a staggered x-wing, and at +-20 degree di/anhedral we found that it could fly stably. It would be control-sensitive, so exponential controls are preferred, but it could be stable.
    The problem with the Star Wars X-Wing is the balance point. To overcome the balance issue, you'd have to treat it similarly to a flying wing, using a slight up-elevator and make it a tiny bit "nose-heavy".
    This did not fail (during the first flight) due to a lack of vertical stabilization. It was an issue of CG. Put the CG further towards the nose, and you should be fine.

  • @dangeary2134
    @dangeary2134 Год назад +2

    I put a lot of thought in this quite a while back.
    The center of gravity issue is a nightmare in itself.
    As far as the dihedral of the wings, here is one solution.
    Have plenty of standard chord on the upper wings, and reduce that to half in the lower ones.
    You will have a net increase In dihedral overall, because the lower wings would not be supplying so much lift.
    For rudder without vertical stabilizers, inner flaps between the wings, upper and lower, can produce a braking effect to control yaw.
    Use a microprocessor in the mix for overall stability.
    To add even more control, I would either use directional fins within the fans, or use motors with props on hinges, or even gimbals, to use the vectored thrust for further stability.
    It would likely be too much to expect even a microprocessor to adjust the speed of each engine, which would also aid in stability as well as ridiculously tight maneuvers.

    Question.
    Dihedral pair provides stabilization.
    Anhedral does the exact opposite.
    The X-wing basically has an anhedral pair and a dihedral pair.
    Would it not have been a good plan to change the airfoil profile of the wing pairs, such that the dihedral pair provided most of the lift, and the anhedral pair didn't provide much lift at all? That would allow the odd wing shape to be more stable, yes?

    • @josepherwin8709
      @josepherwin8709 5 лет назад

      Hunter Wall, an actual airfoil shape on one set of wings might actually offset the effect of the other? Is that your theory?
      It seems that if both sets were airfoil shaped to work together, like a biplane, it might be more stable...I’m not an engineer, just theorizing.

    • @wtechboy18
      @wtechboy18 5 лет назад +2

      @@josepherwin8709 more that an actual airfoil shape on the correct pair, and no airfoil on the other, would make it perform like an actual airplane with proper stabilization. The lower wings would basically just be there for decoration instead of adding usable lift, and maybe for mounting control surfaces.

    • @josepherwin8709
      @josepherwin8709 5 лет назад

      So if the lower pair is used as a mounting point for vertical stabilizers, they could theoretically mount twin verticals using them to create a more rigid wing wing structure and mount rudders on the trailing edges, increasing control quality?

    • @throngcleaver
      @throngcleaver 5 лет назад +3

      Wing lift is primarily accomplished by angle-of-attack, (turning the flow of air, not generating lift with Bernoulli's principle) contrary to popular belief. Just give the lower, (anhedral) wings less angle-of-incidence, in comparison to the angle-of-incidence of the upper, (dihedral) wings.

    • @josepherwin8709
      @josepherwin8709 5 лет назад

      throngcleaver, thanks. That’s basically what I was asking, but I was suggesting further that a pair of vertical stabilizers might improve directional control by allowing the inclusion of a part of rudders. What do you think?

  • @daxdadog

    • @FusionAero

    Great video! Fun to watch and loved the look of the X-Wing!!
    There are two things I don't understand:
    1. Painting over the servos..doesn't that have a negative effect on their operation?
    2. As a private pilot and licensed A&P (aircraft mechanic), I've never heard of an airplane with it's CG on the wing leading edge. How is that possible w/o making a plane uncontrollable?

    The problem is the lower wing ailerons. Because of the angle of the lower wing, the ailerons need to move at a shallower angle the father from the body of the plane. Essentially, you have airflow similar to a mainsail and a jib. The main sail provides the mobility; the jib increases speed, adds "lift" and maneuverability. The lower ailerons can add stability -- or massively increase instability.

      Estes for a short time made a Viper model rocket kit. To be stable it required clear extensions on the fins and an insert section between the nose cone and body tube for flight. For display the insert section was removable.

    Well, you guys may not have ever heard of Tom Swift and all of his inventions, but his airship, The Red Cloud, is something I'd like to see fly. The design is well over 100 years old. In that long series of books about Tom, he also invented the Electric Rifle, which is where the name TASER came from. Thomas A. Swift and his Electric Rifle, is the name of that book.

    For the tie fighter; maybe use some black colored mesh? Something with enough gap for the wind to go through but not so gapped that it makes it look like flying wireframe

      A long time ago I made chuck gliders of both an X-wing and a Colonial viper. I ended up having to make larger than scale tube engines for both and a pair of lexan "invisible vertical stabilizers" for the X-wing to work. They both chucked amazingly well, considering the aircraft design was not done with atmosphere in mind.

      It lifted off the track with wings that slid out from under the tender car and the tender car had giant versions of the vents the DeLorean had from part 2. It flew forward, turned, and flew right into the camera/audience. I think the wheels may have folded down but I don't remember off-hand.

    Great job with the time crunch. Loved the Idea of the vertical stab's. wondering what the C/G. Is reacting very tail-heavy. Wondering if weight added to the front would keep it from weird maneuvers. plus every one goes to 2 engines when its a 4 engine aircraft. if you put 1 strong engine in front and had it coming out all 4 rear ports would look so much movie realistic. and might fix the C/G problem.

    Perhaps the upper, or lower set of wings do not need the moveable flaps, (ailerons/elevators), so as to make it less sensative to changes, and more manageable while in flight.
