I wonder if you turned off the corrections on the SE if you would have had different results. I like the non-D because it oozes character, but it would be my choice for a vintage raw look. The SE is clinical and the AI-S does seem to be the right mix of character and quality. Nice and interesting video as always👍
Everything was turned off except auto distortion on the SE. Its probably the coating doing the magic since its a Z lens and the sizing of the elements which is significantly smaller. No lens hood was used.
Same here. I like the AI-s version. I use that a ton over the past years. I will look into the 28mm F2.8 voigtlander and do a side by side review. So curious about that lens.
The D (non-D) version is known for being somewhat of a dog, don't really like 28mm that much, but here it is tough to see as it really shows it should be used with a hood or against the sun. Shame because theoretically it should be the one with the most natural looking image with 5 elements. Loving these test as always, a 50mm 1.8 would be killer.
I agree with Yamen's comment the SE is far too clinical, quite like some of the non D faults adds a bit of character which modern lenses have lost. Pentax /Takumar next Li😉👍👍
@@theCameraVille I remember you saying it a few times, modern lenses have their place, but I do like the old vintage ones which give a look hard to replicate.
The AI-S for both sharpness and color, the SE for sharpness, the AF sucks. If the AF and SE had a baby it would be the AI-S which the better of the bunch if you don't mind manual focusing
You've shown a typical example of 28SE under strong sunlight, cold and high-contrast, not vivid. Mirrorless compact wide angles are prone to little front glass, and use complex aspherical surfaces, which for Nikon probably the hybrid resin on glass (replica on Canon side) or similar to Canon's PMo plastic moulded, to correct all sorts of aberrations. Then the actual result is still not that good (cornor coma, 28SE weak mfd performance, etc.) Considering AI-S CRC version even doesn't contain the glued lens group, it will last longer than 28SE if preserved well, already famous one in history.
The second test shoud have been completely different, not just another backlit sunny scene. Flare is only one aspect of character/performance ... so many other things about three lenses you could have talked about!
Seems like you missed out. Sorry. Now you wonder why channels ask viewers to click like and subscribe. I only answer to my followers and see what they want. Sadly, you came to this video 2 years too late and also didnt bother to add any useful suggestion. Cheers~
Thé non D version is bad (less than the AI version which was not quite good), the SE is ok but WTF did they put a plastic ring on it ( boring is ok for me if it s boring in its regular quality ) so the best is probably my the AI - S that you can get between 150 - 200$
The non D is one of Nikkon's weakest lenses but perhaps unfair to test it on its weakest point which is flair. Keepthe sun out and use a middling aperture and it is adequate. Many zooms are worse.
Lee, LoL @ 'dunno if people care about my favorite...' Fellow Nikonians and photogs, use a lens hood, works wonders on flare; protects your glass just in case you drop. AI-S for sure!!! I dislike using anything below 35, only have one 28 which is the PC; the others are inclusive with my short tele's.
The five element non D lens isn't worth a toss! ..... I tried one, probably one of Nikon's worst lenses ..... as you can see the purple flaring in the frame center . Most of the D range of small primes remained the same but Nikon had to do something about the AF28 non D. On the six element D version the veil is lifted and we are back to a decent if not perfect example of a modest lens at least.
@@theCameraVille 10 seconds, tops. Each time. If you seeinteresting things with 28mm - use it. Ihave 24 , 35 and 40mm wides. I usedto have the 16mm ais fisheye but I hardly ever used it.
@@413TomaccoRoad So 28mm is your favorite. Its no accident that Nikon made the 28mm as their first SE for Z mount. Leica Q series also a 28MM. @@theCameraVille quite interesting and good to know. Thanks!
The most wonderful thing shown in this test is your beautiful F2Sb! What a camera! 😊
I wasn't surprised that the SE and the AI-s are good. But I am surprised that the AI-s holds up so well vs. a modern lens 40 years later!

The d version is slightly sharper than the non-d and was redesigned, but still lags behind the Ais version
These are all good lenses, but I still love my Nikkor-auto 28/3.5 for its vintage Nikonish output .
Ill take a look!
28 AIS for me adapted to my Sony. Oh yeah! I love this lens.
