As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.
the dog lying on the sofa is invisible in the first half of the video for me lol
just saw it😂👽
hes good at staying still haha lollll
I didn't even notice the dog on the couch until almost two minutes into the video. :D
The looks on spectating dogs are always the best in your videos.
Getting a puppy in a few months and super nervous, so finding this channel is really helpful - thank you!
Thank you kikopup! When I got my puppy a couple of years ago we did this exercise just like you explained it, and she got it right away. She is sleeping in the very same bed right now, settled all by herself. Thanks!
I used this on my 4 month old puppy, thinking it wouldn't work but wow. Took 5 minutes. Thanks!
Signe Christensen oh really? I just put him on his bed and say sleep on this if he doesn't want that i cuddle with him then say ok now go to bed and he goes took me 5 minutes as well
Well that gives me good thoughts then.. Cause i have a 4 month old Dorberman and was nerves..lol
Look at the one just sitting on the couch. "Whatever" :D
Hahaha. :D
Akshay Bharwani or 'welcome to level one, bro. I been here long and now at level 2947'
I love splash
Ikr😂
How did you teach your dog to just lie on the couch like that?.. it's amazing :D
Yeah, he don't look at the treats ! :D
This is so helpful, thanks! I am getting a new puppy on Tuesday, and we got her a dog bed that I am going to put in my room.
Another great video. Thank you so much for all you share. I love watching you, your dogs and videos.
Baby Lumos!!! He's so adorable and so clever! :)
What a smart dog! Very informative video. Thank you for posting.
Love how your videos are always straight to the point👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks!
An example of a well trained dog is how the other border collie on the couch is so well composed and not trying to take the food
Thank you so much...You are the best
Oh my God, you are awesome!
I need to practice this in my office! Would be nice to have it on hand, when I have a visitor who doesn't particularly enjoy my boy's company.
I do this with my husband 😂
D90Girl wat
🤣🤣
I have said this already but I will keep saying it: You are just the best, and it is plaaaaaain to see ;)
The one on the bed I didn’t see him half the video..he’s epic!!
Thats Kiko my little chi :) Shes 16 now!
Love Your Vids :)
4:30 so train your dog to stay in his/her bed even if you suddenly take up irish dancing?
Amazing
Amazing, thank you!
ruclips.net/video/P8yc5Y9HGY4/видео.html Using go to the bed to teach go in a pen or crate :)
I started this with my 14 week old rough collie puppy and he's gotten it in just 2 training sessions. I just need to proof the behaviour with distractions now!
I love how this method can be applied to also teaching your dog to walk away from you and then lie down on cue. Say for during a routine or something.
Yeah! I really need to work on that with Halo. Thanks for reminding me!
Thanks for all of the videos - They are really helpful!!! What kind of treat pouch are you using (brand)?
Wow very impressive.
Hello! Great videos!
One question, what are you giving as treats?
Thank you and keep up with the great videos!!
Please please please make a vid training a fetch without a clicker. MY GSD sometimes does but mostly not.
+kikopup love you videos. helped alot with my newly rescued husky, but when do you phase out treats and how!?
I love your videos! Very easy to follow. Do you have any suggestions for a Black Lab/Boxer mix? As in specific tricks or things I should teach him? He's about 3 months old, I'm trying to start as early as I can. Please help?! :)
I love your videos. I have a question. After you dog learn the trick how many times (or days) do you have to practice with him .
I love how the other dog is watching them training he/her
Do you have any tips on clicker training multiple dogs? I want to work with two of my dogs but don't want to confuse them when they hear the clicker for the other's training. Plus, they both then get excited/competitive when they hear the clicker for a treat.
Loving all your videos. I have a 4 month old border collie who is super intelligent so i want to teach him all that i can. With all the things he can learn should we concentrate on one trick per week with some training each day or alternate days/tricks? How long do you think i should keep reinforcing the stay in the bed as he does so well while we are in "training mode" but all other times doesnt listen so well? Thanks
had you have a video talk about training a dog go toilet right place yet? if not, please taught me. i realy need that. thanks
Love your videos! My puppy is too clever and doesn't fall for me pretending to throw the treat. What should I do?
What a race
Very cute, any ideas on helping a senior dog that cries because her pack has died off when its bed time? I sit till she sleeps at night and then she is good, but during the day if I have to leave for a bit she struggles for a long time we have come home to her screaming.
i would do anything this girl told me to do. 😍😍😍
Kikopup is the best at detailing clicker training.
We have a bed/cushion in the living room, but her nighttime sleep bed is in the bedroom next to our bed, on the floor. Would you use two different words, but train each the same? I was thinking "sleepytime" for the bedroom, or "cushion" for the living room bed. Or will having multiples just confuse the dog? Your videos are great. Thanks for making them!
how long do spend on basic training? Is there a specific amount of time to spend on each or is it just until they get it down? And I know it's good to switch it up and make it interesting so do you do that with the basics or stick with the same routine? Thank you!
I hope to adopt a dog soon, I've been doing countless amounts of research and so far I've really enjoyed watching this channel. I've actually recently taking into account the positive reinforcement training seems to be the way. Before I thought it was all about "being the pack leader" Honestly I never really liked the idea of a "pack leader". I would like to live with a companion rather than have a lower ranked animal being forced to do what I say because the animal thinks I will punish them. But I still am a bit skeptical on how you deal with a "Red Zone" dog. So for the best way I've found out how to avoid having a Red Zone dog is to socialize your dog as much as possible at a young age. Also kikopup is really pretty :)
+DSRT888
Positive reinforcement is by far the easiest way to teach a dog what you want it to do. It just works. It's the whole 'dominance' myth supported by the notion of 'pack leader' I disagree with. We don't dominate our children so why our animals ? Dogs are family members which could be regarded as part of a 'pack' the same way humans can be a 'pack'. It's a miss-used term in my opinion.
We teach our dogs the way we teach our kids. Things like good manners, good from bad behaviour, where to toilet, what we expect etc.
The hard (and best) bit is us learning how to communicate this to our dogs effectively. That's the challenge. I'm not sure what you mean by 'red zone' dogs. I guess you mean dog aggressive or human aggressive dogs. It depends on what's causing the aggression. Fear aggression can definitely be counter conditioned, it just takes time and patience. I don't know about other types of aggression, but anything that's been learned can be relearned in a different way.
Don't Shoot The Dog covers all the 8 methods of changing behavior. It's a great short read, maybe 200 pages. It was my first training book and Karen Pryor knows how to right. Also check anything from dogwise publishing.
how small or big should the treats be?
I've been trying to teach my new dog(10months Labrador mix) to crate train.. I just adopted him last week but he seems afraid because he was in a shelter for so long.. I've tried treats what can I do
Does it work if it has a while dog house?
Do you have, or can you make, some "contact" videos? I mean something like how to teacj your puppy to take contact to you. I have eurasier, and she's not really motivated to do anything, and only "contacts" with treats, not me. I'm gonna have belgian shepherd puppy this summer, and I guess they're much more into really "doing something" with the human.
How do you keep the pup from going straight for your treat pouch?
Awesome video! Where did you get the red and grey bed from please? It looks great :)
LeahBadia7 A store in sweden :(
Ah! May be a bit far for me to travel from the UK! Haha guessing it isn't branded at all? Do you know any other makes that do beds like that one, looks like the perfect wipe-able puppies first proper bed! Thanks for messaging back!
I just bought a 2 months old Pekingese and i don't have a crate to train him in a certain area.
I've put him yesterday in my closed balcony for his first sleep in the house but he didn't sleep, he just whin and cry.
He only sleeps when any member of the family is next to him.
If not, he keeps whining all night and all the family is woke up.
I can't sleep, please help.
And also idk how to potty train him.
Hi, from what age can we introduce the bed to a puppy? Will it confuse him whether he should relax in the crate or in the bed? and will it make him reluctant to go to the crate at night?
Do we have to do all this in one session ?
How did you train the other dog so calmly watching your training and not involve?
I have a video tutorial on that :) ruclips.net/video/MfRrBH_beX8/видео.html
Will the dog become less alert/stop being in training mode while laying in bed automatically after some time if you practice settle?
Will this work on a 3 year old dog? 😩
My puppy doesn't have a bed his bed is in his Crate do i still use the cue go to bed.
i have a dog he is n longer a puppy and at his old home he got to sleep on the bed so when i try to go to bed he will none stop jump on my bed so im trying to teach him to go go on his his bed by command i tried this and it did not work at all
Thank you for these tips. I would like to ask you about training with two dogs. I just adopted a 6 months puppy, but I already have another dog. I see you are training your puppy while adult stay lying on the sofa. Is it the right way or it is better to train them separatly? For example, it is a good idea do leash training with the puppy while the other dog is near? Have I to give treats to the two? (Excuse my English, I am from Spain and I do not speak very well...) Thank you
Ok, I just found one of your videos where you explain this topic =) you have a lot of videos!
My parents have a 4 or 5 year old Border Collie that I'd like to "retrain". He knows "come" and "sit" and "eat", but only obeys like 60% of the time. Should I just approach him as if he were completely untrained and teach him everything from scratch, or is there anything I should do differently since he is semi-trained?
I love love love your videos! For this one though, I've tried this for about three days straight now, and can't seem to get past the "throwing a treat on the bed" stage. When I pretend to throw a treat, my dog just looks at the bed, looks at me, looks at my hand, and then puts his head on my knee to wait for the treat! Any suggestions for a dog who's not fooled by the "pretend throw"?
Continue working on actually throwing the treat until they start thinking to do it on their own. I'm training this with my 3 year old dog right now and I do 5-10 minute training for place 2 times a day at least. It's been 4 days of this and we are just now to the pretending to throw step. Every dog is different!
My dog does the same.. Always take forever to learn a new trick and it makes me so sad
What you give as a treat? Is it normal kibbles or something special?
Suresh kumar Selvam I have special milk treats for my puppy and I use kibbles as a good when I'm out of te house or as a quick lunch
hi, I've been pretty frustrated lately with my golden retriever puppy. he's 11 weeks old, and he is a handful. he bites and mouths on me all the time and I try to make him stop, but he is almost aggressively play biting. he's broken skin multiple times and he's latched onto my fore arm and won't let go as well. I've tried training him, and all he knows is sit and lay down. he's very very high energy and can't focus on me long enough to learn anything else. I very desperately need help. I love my puppy very much, but it can't be this difficult forever right?
The link in the end is not working. Love you're work though!
myklijn THANKS! It totally slipped my mind... The videos take like 200 mins to upload and then by that time... I forgot... ! I will add it now!
Hi I have a coolaroo, an elevated bed. My dog is super afraid of eating the treat, he will stretch to reach the treat instead of confidently going in to take it.
I tried flipping the bed upside down so he don't have to climb in, he is still wary of it.
Any suggestions?
Great videos really helpful!
Firstly I thought you had a mix that was part Coolie and something else lol. I suggest putting a very thick non slip blanket covering it at first so that the dog cant see under it, teach multiple sessions of go to bed until the dog is offering it confidently and lying on it, then gradually remove the blanket.
@@kikopup haha! Thanks for your response! Your channel was strongly recommended by my Dog's positive only trainer. We're from singapore :)
Do you recommend me flipping my bed upside down for now, with the blanket? Or just placing the blanket on an elevated bed is better?
How do you train your dog if they are disinterested in treats -.- i have a 5 month chihuahua/terrier mix. I give him half a cup of dry food mixed with a couple spoons of wet food in the morning, maybe a spoon or 2 of wet food for lunch, and another spoon or 2 for dinner time. Usually there is still dry food left from the morning that he finishes off at lunch time, or will sometimes last till dinner time and if not I will had just a little more dry food at dinner. So in a day he is getting a half cup of dry food, and a can of wet food. I let him eat as much as he wants he just doesn't want to eat very much. I feed high quality food so maybe its because he is getting what he needs from his small portions? He absolutely will not eat dry food unless I mix in some wet food, and if I mix in the wet food lazily he will work around the kibble and just eat the wet food. So he isn't entirely interested in food, nor is he interested in treats. The only time he gobbles up all his food at once is after a few hours of running around at the park or having a super active day, and during those active times he also likes treats however after feeding him a few treats while teaching him to sit he then was completely disinterested in dinner, wet food and all.
I followed suggestions to train my pup by hand feeding all his meals during the training. Why would you dog be interested in treats or food during training if he is getting all his meals for nothing? You see?
My 6 month old puppy seems to not think to go to the bed on his own. Only with food lures. I'll keep trying, but does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I'm doing something wrong. As I wait for him to make the decision to go towards the bed he just sits politely right in front of me waiting for the next opportunity he can do to get his treats.
Did you try pretending to put a treat in the bed then going back and releasing him to it? If you do this method the next trail you have to put a treat in the bed. And then repeat. For some dogs it might take 20-30 pretending to put out the treat in the bed before they catch on that they get the treat for going to the bed.
Is it possible to clicker train a two year old dog? You are amazing. I just bought your 25 training tips ebook. I really need help. I have been through 4 obedience classes, but I feel I was given some crappy information right from the start. I hope it's not too late to re-train my dog.
+Kathleen Bell
Yes you can introduce the clicker at any age. I introduced my old dog to the clicker around age 10. He LOVED his clicker training. As soon as they suss that clicker=treat you've got it.
It's never too late to train a dog. It might take a lot longer to retrain something your dog has learnt to REALLY like doing, but given enough time and consistency it can be achieved.
+Tesla Nick thank you for your reply. can you recommend materials for beginning the basics?
Well we're already on the best channel for clicker training on youtube. Zak George is another good guy, he's all about effective communication. I also find Michael Ellis very helpful (though he's not all all positive trainer).
Clicker training is basically just classical conditioning. All positive is the same thing without the aversive bit.
The reason we use the clicker is to 'mark' the behaviors we want to reward. In order to effectively mark we need to reward within 1 second of the behavior which is not practical just using treats as the time it takes to get the treat to the dog. By 'charging' the clicker we create an associating in the dog's mind that the click means 'treat coming' and buys us the time we need to give the treat. You'll see this once you start using the technique.
I would say just dive in and give it a go and learn as you go along.
Start by clicking and treating for really simple stuff like eye contact or just looking up at you. Dogs always catch on really fast what the clicker means.
Be aware that some dogs may be startled by the click if it's too loud so keep it well away from their ears to begin with.
I'm sure Emily (kikopup) has at least one video on how to start with the clicker.
Best of luck and let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know and I will help if I can.
+Tesla Nick Thank you for that info. I haven't explored her videos enough yet to find the basics. she's amazing. not sure I have the gift, but I will definitely try.
Click training feels so clinical to me for some reason.. Not opposed but I have this weird stigma against it. Might have been the chapter of Pavlov's dogs in Introduction to Psychology in college. If I click train, am I forever dependent on the clicking?
Not at all. You phase it out. The clicker is just a marker to tell then they are correct. You can exchange the click sound with "yes" or "good".
What if I don't have a clicker? Is it okay if I don't have one?
You can imitate a clicking noise with your tongue, or use a word that means the same. Yes = Treat.
You can also use the lid of like a pickle jar or something. They both click!
You can get apps on your phone for it
Well I can’t lure my dog to the down position! he can get the treat if my while still standing because he’s so small! So not sure how to train him?
ruclips.net/video/aI52a3u_Qvw/видео.html this video is how to teach down using something you lure the dog under
What if you GS isn't blackmailed by treats
how do you train a release que like "free" or "break"
i dont understand how you would communicate to the dog that the que universally means "do what you want now"
repetition
mike rollins i must have been very sleep deprived because just the word "repetition" answers my question
thanks
+mike rollins

+Debbie Brashears tfcv
I am sure you get this question all the time, but I couldn't find the answer on the comments. What do you usually use as a treat?
I use my dogs pet food and she thinks its treats
I'm curious, what is your view on castration? Are your dogs neutered?
She's an SJW lesbian. They are pro-castration by definition.
i hope this will work with my puppy, because he keeps jumping and sleeping in my bed right next to me and if i let him down he wont stop crying therefor he won't sleep except when he's in my bed!! is it because he's only two months old or is he just spoiled??
Yes he is spoiled lol .. I have 2 months old Great Pyrene .. We don't let him come to our bed or in living area. He have to stay around he's area. Only can come when we want. Please teach him from now on.. Otherwise he's gone be on your bed every night lol..
Ade K you and your dog's relationship is cute
spoil them with treats on their bed then make them sit on their bed and give them a treat for sitting and when they lay down on the bed say sleep and give them a treat repeat till they do on their own took me lil less then a week to get them to do it on their own
I used this method to get my dog into the car and keep him in down and relaxing position (he used to fall asleep even with the engine running :) ). The problem begins when the car starts moving. He stands up and begins to get stressed, I don't know how to manage this situation :(
i just made my dog a DIY bed. the next thing i need to learn is this, to make him go to his bed. lol
Hi! I am looking into getting an Australian Shepard puppy, but I have a cat. I know your not an expert on cats, but I was wondering if you can give me any pointers on how to introducing them in a friendly way, thanks! :)
Emma AJ lots of catnip and baby gates! I use feliway diffuser for intros as well.
Emma AJ lots of catnip and baby gates! I use feliway diffuser for intros as well.
Why do u need to click on that thing? What the function?
I love your question - whats the function? My training colleagues shorten it to "WTF?" This video describes what clicker training is ruclips.net/video/_wv1uvvqaSw/видео.html Basically you mark behavior to tell the dog he got it right. You could make a click sound or say "good" or "yes" etc. This video is on how to start using a clicker with a puppy- ruclips.net/video/V80JVAibXLQ/видео.html I love to use the clicker instead of a verbal marker like "good" when I make tutorials because I can talk to you and train at the same time, telling the dog he got it right while I am talking. :)
And how do you train the OTHER dogs to stay so quiet while you train one?
ruclips.net/video/MfRrBH_beX8/видео.html THis video explains how using two dogs who were not previously trained.
What breed is that absolutely adorable puppy?
Maybe Australian Shepard
Rachel Millett Border Collie, he is from Germany
Amber V Kaitlyn Ford Thank you both! (:
What if my dog is not food orientated?
Best dog to train with. I.e: The smartest dogs in the world.
When the dog already know what it supposed to do...
Does anyone else think she is giving her dog a lot of treats.😂
Kyra Lambrecht they are very small
Cooper Daddy yes they are very tiny treats my Spiderman can eat the entire bag for once training skills
It doesn't always have to be "treats." One of the best ways to train is with your dogs actual meal and regular meals should be cut back if you've fed a lot during training!
QueenNewNew Spiderman...
Kyra Lambrecht too much he just loves those treats lol
What do I do if my puppy bites the bed instead of listening to me?
But what would you suggest if your dog is blind?
my friend made a website for blind dog training blinddogtraining.com/
What if your bad at throwing accurately? xD
Then you have to walk a lot :) I am sometimes bad at throwing... :) Tip: use treats like deli meat that dont bounce, kibble tends to roll or bounce ...
my dachshund loves animals cookies lol
I bought a handmade bed because I want her to sleep on it and she kept sleeping on my bed... :( im gonna have to try this...
Do you know how bad that is for your dog?
+Lizzie O the cookies? yeah my friend told me... but now I teach her to go to her bed and she goes!
Zulmii Torres aww very sweet
+Lizzie O yes... unfortunately I gave her away :( cuz My manager from the building complain a lot about her barks and scratching the door... :( now I have a kitten
Zulmii Torres I think a kitten will be a better choice for you, since you live in an apartment.
Does anyone else notice the dog in the background
This video is great , but you are missing some info. Do have a intro where you talk a bit and add tips like use small treats or kibble. I don't have huge success on the Internet, so... all the same, you know what your doing.
My puppy will jump in his bed when I don’t give command and stare at me as he knows he usually gets treats if he goes there voluntarily 😂 also when I try to train the settle, he just gets up out of the bed eventually when he thinks food isn’t coming 😒
It work but my dog got carried away and bit me 😄
oh no!
My dog just want to sleep in my bed I don’t know how to break that habit he’s 1 yr old.. 😢
you can get a large pen and put it next to your bed, with a cushy dog bed in it. If hes used to going under the covers, you can put a cover on him when he lays in the bed. I suggest having the pen right up against your bed at first and lay next to it so he can see you. You can give him treats for going into his pen and into his bed (following this tutorial video). Then when he seems content sleeping all night in the pen, you can take the pen away and see if he will sleep in his bed on the floor of your room. Its ok to have your dog sleep in your bed btw. As long as they dont guard it or growl or take up too much room. However, they can leave the bed super hairy :)
i didnt know miley cyrus does dog training
PLEASE
My puppy cant even climb his own dog bed D:
aliceu lol can he do it now?
My puppy doesn't get it, he gets distracted very easily :( He's 7 months old
I suggest training just before a meal and experimenting with different types of treats. Try working on a couple different behaviors each day rather than just one at a time.
