That intro is CLEAN! It's insane what all is possible before getting a badge in this game - definitely one of the wildest but also most accessible Oak challenges out there.
If you do a skip during the beginning the entire map opens up to you before the tutorial so it's possible to fill more than half the Pokedex before even going to the academy ( if you're fine with walking everywhere since the Koraidon/ Miraidon bike is not available)
@@TheTitaniumSamurottthere is another exploit where if you have 2 minus joycons off of the switch you can move using both of them to go twice as fast while walking
Quick note: you actually unlock Pokémon Centers as fast-travel spots just by visiting them, you don't actually have to heal there first. This is the same with all fast-travel spots. You just have to walk up to them and you can fast-travel there whenever you want. The only reason I think he made this mistake is because you can't visually see that you can fast-travel there until you open the map and update the icon, and healing also updates your map.
The exception to this rule is the 4 Shrines (yes they are fly spots, I learnt this by accident). You need to start that sidequest to unlock those warps.
I was curious how the professor Oak challenge was going to be for this game! It's insane that you can catch almost every pokemon even BEFORE finishing the tutorial by using a glitch.
It is possible to catch 350 Pokemon before going to the lighthouse at the beginning of the game with no mods or hacks. This means no mount, or trading.
That strange little "floating sprite" bug is baffling. I've had it happen to me *multiple* times. First time was a dreepy outbreak... I think it's map assets glitching out since it seems to move with the map
So, the weird thing to me is, as you were heading to Alfornada, you referred to the path as the "secret" path and I was like "...did everyone not go that way?"
He was like "...that secret path that everyone ignored" and meanwhile I'm over here being the one who went right through there as soon as I saw it with my level 20-25 squad ready to fuck shit up
So I ended up starting a run like this and once I did the thing where you ZR into combat to jump the gap by Los Platos I decided to see how far I could take things without even doing the Nemona fight before entering Mesagoza. So far I've learned a few things: - obviously this means no Miraidon/Koraidon ever - raids and outbreaks don't exist - the team star roadblocks aren't placed yet so it is possible to walk between Levincia and Artazon - you can enter Mesagoza from the side gates but can't exit them on foot without progressing the story - you can't reach the pokemon league by any means as far as I can tell - you can't picnic which means no breeding - there doesn't seem to be any way to get False Swipe TMs other than from Mr Jacq, which means Breloom w/ Spore and False Swipe isn't an option - and maybe most surprisingly it seems like the game is permanently stuck in midday, meaning no time based spawns or evolutions (although I did see the cluster of ghastly spawn by the ruins in South Area 1 so maybe night still technically happens in some way without any visible change??)
You can climb up (by foot) the mountain west of the league to access that Pokemon Center. Many seemingly impossible spots are reachable without a mount, either by dropping from a higher place or walking up slopes, or using battle teleport (which is how you get the Highest Peak fly point).
hey! this is the exact info i’ve been looking all over for! i started a play through on scarlet and did the gap jump just to see if i could and started exploring and catching. i wasn’t sure how far you could go without the ride/picnics and have spent the last day reading through posts looking for this EXACT INFO SO THANK YOU! the no time change thing is very bizarre! hope you have a beautiful day!
You might have got some useful rewards from the pokedex rewards thing too - i think som include better pokeballs and evolution stones. I completly missed this feature until i almost had them all
It also notably gives a decent amount of xp candy. Not even close to the amount he needed, but enough to ease the pain on a pokemon like hydreigon at least. Also not sure if he did it or not but sharing progress with Jacq gives you a false swipe TM, 20 ultra balls, and 20 quick balls at 30, 100, and 200 entries respectively.
TIL professor oak’s challenge is a thing… catching all pokemon that are available before beating any given gym is just how I’ve always approached playing Pokémon games haha (though I guess the challenge might include getting Pokédex entries for all evolutions of available Pokémon too, in which case I guess I haven’t entirely been playing this way)
Idk if you mention it as I’m only 13 min in, but you get rewards from your Pokédex every 10 Pokémon registered. It’s a great source of eco stones and late game balls, like dusk and timer
10:43 Applin actually has a guaranteed spawn on the western coast near a small tree. You could have just gone there to find one. He's on the ground near a tree in a little indent in the ground.
Stellar video! I love the number of small details behind the scenes of these games that we only get to discover because of these challenges. Very well done!
You know, this video inadvertently serves as a nice guide for how to get each Pokemon as early or as quickly as possible. Obviously some of these are things you'd be better off just... you know... earning the badges and movement options for, but if you don't want to do that, this is a good video!
Not that it matters for this challenge, but Orthworm and Klawf are actually not locked behind their Titan battles, but they are locked behind the number of badges you have. I know this because I was doing a nuzlocke and beat the first 3 gyms without beating Klawf, went back to beat Klawf, and was seeing tons of wild Klawf
love your vids man! have been waiting for soooo long for this when i saw you were grinding it on stream. Thank you for the entertainment you have been putting up for the pokemon comunity!
Cool challenge, I did something similar but before ever reaching Mezagoza. There are I think 11 pokemon that you can only get specifically after going to mezagoza and getting koraidon- Drifloon, Drifblim, Goodra, Umbreon, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Shuppet, Banette, Finneon, Lumineon and Bruxish. Most are locked behind the fact that weather and day/night cycle dont move before doing the school stuff
I haven't watched this yet but I'm damn excited to do so. Your videos are always incredibly entertaining. Your video of hunting every shiny in Let's Go inspired me to not only complete the Pokedex in Violet but also attempt to breed my first shiny once I got the charm. And I did, I got an Eevee in EIGHT EGGS, I couldn't believe it! So now I have a shiny Umbreon for the first time ever. Keep up the great work, John!
"Now just like any other game Pokemon have obedience levels based on how many badges you have." Yeah this was a huge problem for me when I was doing the Titan badges quest. As SOON as I learned WHY Arven needed those Herba Mysti....ca...huh....Herba Mystica....H...M-OH MY GOD. Anyways as soon as I found out why he needed those, I was like "SCREW EVERYTHING ELSE, PROTECC THE DOG. HEAL. THE DOG. HELP. THE BOY." But it became hard to do when your Pokemon just dgaf about you lol. So I alternated between Gym Challenge and Titan Quest. I did Team Star last.
For me I started with exclusively titans, so I could easily just move with absolute ease everywhere, then I did gym challenge afterwards for xp and letting some of my Pokémon finally start obeying me (like, half of my Pokémon wouldn’t obey me, 2 of them being super overleveled at the time) and then just did the team star battles last cause they don’t give anything outside of xp
Currently doing something similar with my copy of Violet, except I escaped from the first area before going to Mesagoza, so I don’t have raids, sandwiches, a Tera orb or a ride Pokémon. It has been… Slow going, but deeply rewarding to find out how free we really are in this game.
In my second playthrough in Violet, i made a challenge for myself and i have to finish it before entering the school segment (by using the tele glitch at the west of Los Platos). First, i needed to have a full team of six pokemons, but only one pokemon per Area (Kinda like in nuzlocke), and they all have to be the kind of pokemons that i like. Second, i needed all of them to be usable right away, meaning that all of those six pkmn has to be lv 20 or below. Third, that six pkmn will have to be in the team for the rest of the game, permanently. And fourth, no using starter pkmn after the school segment, so i had to catch 6 pkmn, not just 5. Remember, i had to catch 'em all before entering the school segment (when Nemona is still staying in Los Platos), so i had to run around the map without my Miraidon like an idiot, while planning my steps on how to get the pkmn that i want and picking up free balls along the way. I know the challenge wasn't that unique or anything, but it was pretty fun.
Before even watching, I just thought the other day while I was playing Scarlet, "Man. Johnstone is probably going to have a ball with the Professor Oak challenge in this game." Not word for word, but it was something like that.
something he didn't bring up that I learned doing this challenge before even getting Koraidon (skipping over the ledge before Mesagoza) is Auto-Battling becomes the best way to level grind via exp share. Anyone doing this challenge, use obedient ground types like Clodsire to AB (Auto-Battle) Toxtricity until level 35, then start to AB the Luxray that spawn in the bamboo forest. An even faster way would be to level a Smoliv to an Arboliva and at level 32 they can AB any Golduck, which given the great numbers they spawn in at the northern Dratini lake, becomes more consistent. Also don't use Scyther, he honestly would've saved time by just leveling another Shroomish to 40, they can be found at an obedient level around the southern marsh. You can't access False Swipe on it pre-Mesagoza, but when you pick up all the treasures on the map, you get rich fast. Grind them up to level 55 and it'll be able to carry you easily. Also get used to throwing Pokémon to cross gaps or water, makes traversing a lot easier. You can get 347 total Pokémon pre-Mesagoza since all weather and night-time only Pokémon are inaccessible bc the game is locked in a Morning only state until you begin the Treasure Hunt. Also I recommend doing it pre-Mesagoza bc how weird the whole game feels when it doesn't expect you to be in it, you really feel like you're breaking the rules.
Well, this is amazing. I don't think I'd have the patience for any of the newer games because there is just so much to catch before doing virtually anything else, so I have never been more glad for a video like this. Also, I haven't even yet managed to get all obtainable pokemon in my regular playthrough of Scarlet, so there's that too.
Gold and Silver: noo you can’t get those stones until post game, we only want you to use ampharos, Crobat and the red gyarados, everything else kinda sucks! Scarlet and violet: T A K E. W H A T. Y O U. W A N T.
Yeah, Scarlet and Violet really made the Pokedex easy to complete early due to how open world it is. Past games didn't let you get more than 50 Pokemon before each gym, but this... HOOO BOY!! O_O
Getting as much of the PokeDex done as you can before a gym is actually a pretty cool challenge! I'm also not familiar with a lot of the Scarlet and Violet Pokemon, so this was actually a great introduction to some of them.
In my second version play though I started by seeing if I really could make it to Alfornada before any gyms or movement tech (like it seemed like should be possible from exploration in my first playthrough), and then once that worked, I decided to see just how many poke centers & fast travel points I could unlock before my first badge. Turned out I could get everywhere that wasn’t an island. I even got the fast travel point for the peak of the mountain using some back jumps.
That arrokuda thing. It happened to me, only it was one of my waypoint markers- right after teleporting somewhere else! The entire map was greyed out or something, and i could move my cam to see the waypoint marker itself on the legit screen! Even got a screenshot of it. Quite the catch!! Also- loved this challenge :O
Would enjoy seeing a video of you getting a shiny living dex for paldea. If you started after you got access to high level raids and used shining sandwiches, i don't think it would be the hardest challenge out there! It, in theory, is quite possible! (I just got 3 shinies in 15 minutes so i have been thinking of doing the same thing...)
@@mohbius2 The first was also boosted by 60 kos in an outbreak and then i just jumped around the map with the rest of my sandwich where i knew lots of flying types spawned. Got a rufflet, rookidee, and noibat. On the other end, I have spent countless sandwiches on goomy and drifloom and have had no luck. One day...
@@Whiteythereaper Maybe I should try breeding more this gen. I am impatient with breeding so when i didnt get any from making my raid mons I just never went back lol. First and only shiny via breeding was back in gen 7. My italian Ditto will give it another shot lol
On Deino/Zweilous/Hydreigon and other three-stage evolutions, Pokémon who are past the level where they could evolve gain bonus experience. The quickest way to get to Hydreigon at level 64 is to prevent your Deino from evolving into Zweilous until it hits level 63.
I actually did something similar to this on release date and had so much fun exploring I ended up not going to the school and yet completing most the Pokédex that I could get other than the legendaries and the deep sea fish 😂😅
This video is wild dude. I really didn't think you would do this, but apparently I was wrong! Also, this game is so buggy, but great. Was that Arrokuda sprite really there, or was it edited?
I'm curious, will catching version exclusives via tera raids not count as being one copy? Since you can technically catch them with just one copy of the game. Still this was a blast to watch and one of the most fun Prof. Oak challenges to tackle
@@AutisticGastrodon I keep hearing people complain about it crashing and my game has never crashed a single time, nor have I seen a single glitch, and I play it for hours at a time 💀
How on earth did you get to edit this entire MASSIVE montage of endless hours of grinding? Do you use stuff like timestamps while you stream to make finding clips easier? I'm very inspired by your channel
I don’t really know the answer, but I would assume he actually goes through the entirety of his streams and just takes specific clips from there, since some of the clips he uses aren’t even while on stream, like his let’s go all shinies video
Heads-up: Pokémon who are past the level where they could evolve gain bonus experience. If you keep your Deino from evolving into Zweilous until level 63, it will go a lot more quickly.
Was gonna wind down for the evening with some chill shiny hunting, but my cat decided that actually, it was snuggle time, so I am once again back to watch John's suffering
This seems awesome to do. Curious if you could list out the 45 pokemon that you weren't able to catch before the first badge? I know there's 23 version exclusives, 7 paradox pokemon, 4 Ruinous Legendaries, Koraidon, Orthworm. I counted 36, but I'm definitely sure I missed something.
Why not just use Vivillon for sleep? It has Compound Eyes so you'll hit Sleep Powder much more often than not, and it can put Pokemon to sleep sooner than Shroomish Edit: Nevermind, Breloom can easily take out Chansey and gets False Swipe
This is awesome. I started my playthrough by escaping the start zone without going to the academy to see how much I could do. I got bored pretty quickly though as you can’t do any gyms, raids, titans and no Koraidon/Miraidon. You can battle/catch to your hearts content though.
It's shown how much he had to catch when you find out the only Pokemon not available then were every Paradox Pokemon besides the Donphans and the Titan Locked ones.
Oh what a coinsidence, i just thought "huh, i wonder how you would do a.proffesor oak challenge for this game" earlier today and you apperently just posted it.
“And catching my favorite fact” I really hope it’s not the Vaporeon fact that I know lol. Hopefully there is some other awesome Vaporeon fact that I haven’t heard yet!
I found Applin by defeating the pokemon around the trees and eventually it shows up. It doesn't take very long. I find a lot of people think you need to unload the pokemon. I found your chances increase as you defeat the ones walking on the ground.
Actually for the Alfronada cave, I just used a glitch, basically the same way you're gonna catch the fish Pokemon but get an angle where it teleports me up and use maschiff with a particular ability (idk remember the name) and boom, other side of the wall
I got about 200 pokemon before ever going to the University when I played, I wanted to do what you did here, but it was release weekend and I really wanted to experience the game so I stopped, but it's so silly that you can progress your Pokedex so far so soon.
Thanks for checking out the video! Tell me what your favorite Pokemon game is :)

Fantastic video John. I missed most of these streams so I'm glad to finally get to see what I missed.
watching the gholdengo coin collection was wild. this video is another banger as always john ❤
His sheer happiness with the arrokuda floating around made me so happy
Edit: AND it’s upside down!
I like your pfp
please do a shiny version and upload it in 2030, we can wait
Would enjoy seeing a video of you getting a shiny living dex for paldea. If you started after you got access to high level raids and used shining sandwiches, i don't think it would be the hardest challenge out there! It, in theory, is quite possible! (I just got 3 shinies in 15 minutes so i have been thinking of doing the same thing...)
i took 5 hours for a lokix, easily 800 eggs for meowscarada, and you’re getting 3 shinies in… 15 minutes?
@Morgan O’Sullivan it's all about hunting location got a lowkix when I was bisharp hunt. Nimble took a couple of hours even with outbreak
@Morgan O’Sullivan sandwiches are disgustingly broken lmao, masuda method is in shambles (laughs in 14 eggs for my Fuecoco though)
15:55 Keeping it Family Friendly😂
Rival:Would you like me to show you how to catch a Pokémon?
Johnstone: Nah, I’ve caught a few already
Note: you don't actually need to heal ur pokemon at a pokemon center, you can just stand in it and it will register if you open up your map
Sick run!
Great job really!
I actually didn't know that the haunter trade isn't as scummy as the one in previous game 😅
So I'm gonna get my gengar:D
I actually did something similar to this on release date and had so much fun exploring I ended up not going to the school and yet completing most the Pokédex that I could get other than the legendaries and the deep sea fish 😂😅
Ive been binging all your videos as i do my college work, deffinetly makes work more enjoyable
This video is wild dude. I really didn't think you would do this, but apparently I was wrong!
Also, this game is so buggy, but great. Was that Arrokuda sprite really there, or was it edited?
It was there, I was on stream when it happened
Hi I've been watching you for years! and you always make me happy and never seem to fail thank you for all the years of fun!
@Text +① ⑤⓪② ⑤③⓪-⓪⑥⑧④ Thanks for checking out the video! Tell me what your favorite Pokemon game is :)
I'm curious, will catching version exclusives via tera raids not count as being one copy? Since you can technically catch them with just one copy of the game.
Still this was a blast to watch and one of the most fun Prof. Oak challenges to tackle
You can also do union circle and have the other version player run ahead
24:26 bro did not just say Armarogue and Pinchurchin 💀
This game is definitely one of the most fun games
Agreed. But now imagine how much more fun it would have been if game freak is actually competent at developing games
It would be fun if the darn games performance wasnt horrible....its a shame because i love this game
Imagine how good this game would be with good performance and a bit better graphics
At this point I'm convinced yall have bad switches. Or maybe I'm just used to low frame rates idk
@@AutisticGastrodon I keep hearing people complain about it crashing and my game has never crashed a single time, nor have I seen a single glitch, and I play it for hours at a time 💀
Good to see you back after almost month
How on earth did you get to edit this entire MASSIVE montage of endless hours of grinding? Do you use stuff like timestamps while you stream to make finding clips easier? I'm very inspired by your channel
I don’t really know the answer, but I would assume he actually goes through the entirety of his streams and just takes specific clips from there, since some of the clips he uses aren’t even while on stream, like his let’s go all shinies video
Hell yeah, love to see it. I decided to complete the entire pokedex, even the other version exclusives. Gotta love that BLJ glitch
POSITIVE COMMENT FROM SOMEONE WITH A CHECKMARK!
RATIO'D BY A SILLY GUY
oMg hI cHEckMaRk!!!
the "yaaay :D" when he encountered shiny mudbray was rlly cute
this video is so good!! also I got the same arrokuda glitch as you only with avalugg
As someone who has a shiny deino (a sheino if you will) my god you’re so right i hate grinding it BUT IM NOT FINISHING THIS GAME WITHOUT MY HYDREIGON
Farther in now, and I’ll say this is a pretty good bday present for me
Heads-up: Pokémon who are past the level where they could evolve gain bonus experience. If you keep your Deino from evolving into Zweilous until level 63, it will go a lot more quickly.
@@gizoginjr that’s such good advice i WISH i knew it before i evolved it yesterday :(
Was gonna wind down for the evening with some chill shiny hunting, but my cat decided that actually, it was snuggle time, so I am once again back to watch John's suffering
You missed Perrserker and Quagsire 😬. They’re not in the Pokédex but Professor Oak would be pleased still 😆
You can't get galar meowth with out taking classes new classes unlock from gym badges. You can do the johto wooper trade though
@@GhostrareStardust yeah the Galar Meowth can still be done later in the run before the end game
@@GhostrareStardust You can also get a Haunter that immediately evolves into Gengar by trading a Pincurchin for it.
You only have to step in the Pokemon Centers to have the fast travel point!
You counting Fuecoco and Quaxly?
The last three seem to be the trade evos.
It’s so funny seeing this, because I did the exact same thing when the game came out as my first playthrough.
Why not just use Vivillon for sleep? It has Compound Eyes so you'll hit Sleep Powder much more often than not, and it can put Pokemon to sleep sooner than Shroomish
Edit: Nevermind, Breloom can easily take out Chansey and gets False Swipe
10:40 shiny? Or just the lighting, making one of them look brighter
This is going to be Awesome.
You were first
30:58You can get Great Tusk/Iron treads by going back to where you found them as titans. I don’t blame you, it’s an obscure fact.
Violet gang
👇
John! I went bonkers when I found that cracked pot! It was like my last Pokémon I caught before version exclusives to get my dex complete
how in the world did this game come out in 2022, game cube games look better graphically
Yea that's a lie you can talk shit about the game all you want but you gotta use your brain better next time
22:47 You thought it was dedenne but it was me ditto.
This is awesome. I started my playthrough by escaping the start zone without going to the academy to see how much I could do. I got bored pretty quickly though as you can’t do any gyms, raids, titans and no Koraidon/Miraidon. You can battle/catch to your hearts content though.
I hope this guys knows Applin has a garunteed spawn on the map just east of area zero. It is in an oval shaped area there.
Screentail gives 4.500 xp from defeating it
It's shown how much he had to catch when you find out the only Pokemon not available then were every Paradox Pokemon besides the Donphans and the Titan Locked ones.
13:00 The same thing happened to me but with a Honchkrow and it just looked like it zoomed past the land at first cause I was overlooking a cliff 💀
I dont know why but gholdengos pose on the thumbnail is hilarious he is one of my favorite new pokemon as well
Oh what a coinsidence, i just thought "huh, i wonder how you would do a.proffesor oak challenge for this game" earlier today and you apperently just posted it.
“And catching my favorite fact” I really hope it’s not the Vaporeon fact that I know lol. Hopefully there is some other awesome Vaporeon fact that I haven’t heard yet!
I can't believe this madlad actually did a professor oak's in this game of all things. He truly cannot be stopped
Bro I LOVE mudbray and it was my first shiny in this game too. Love the channel keep up the good work
basically just rtgame’s playthrough of scarlet but even more tomfoolery
You should do professor oak challenge in Pokémon Trozei for the DS. Could be a fun spin off to try, and I have no idea how it’d go.
Mudbray was also my first shiny in the game, and I think around the same area, so that’s pretty cool
I was looking forward to seeing this when I saw your Tweets. Hoo boy this game makes for quite the Oak Challenge
I found Applin by defeating the pokemon around the trees and eventually it shows up. It doesn't take very long. I find a lot of people think you need to unload the pokemon. I found your chances increase as you defeat the ones walking on the ground.
Makes sense tbh, because in a way, defeating the overworld mons is akin to despawning them forcefully
Love the content man please keep making it!
