We used shape note song books at our church, thats what was taught mama used to go to the singing school before my time, but mama always had a song in her heart in everything she done,im glad this tradition is being passed on
The Jeffress Family from Crossett, Arkansas, have taught singing schools for probably 70 years. I feel so blessed to have had this experience in my life. We need young people to pick up the shape note legacy, for it seems to be a dying art except in Appalachian churches.
Wonderful. Many Mennonites sing by shape notes because the music is a Capella. The Holdeman Mennonites are especially good at it. You can sing a song they've never heard and they're a writing down the shapes as fast as you can sing in a straight line and then they'll go back and do re mi to you the tune. They'll go through it a second time and put in the handles and flags then they'll come back and sing you the song just as it is supposed to sound and they did all this in a straight line using the shaped notes. Amazing.

This is how my grandmother learned music.
How wonderful to see this.

I love this!
Absolutely beautiful. God bless the singers. Good job bless each and everyone
We need to have shape note singing schools instead of the modern notes we have today thanks for sharing and bringing us along
Very beautiful, it sounds similar to the sound from my Baptist Church here in England as a child.
Look for ''Psalmen met bovenstem'.
That's the traditional Dutch way of church singing.
It starts at 3.00!

I’m so disgusted by the new age songs and the churches of the American Northwest. Bethel , Hillsong and Elevation music . Beware
