- Dave Rothrock and Phil Gay have over 120 years of fly fishing experience between them. They share their experience and the types of casts and applications to use those fly casts to defeat a fly fisher’s arch nemesis, drag, and to catch more fish. The five major casts they cover are the reach cast, bump cast (aerial mends), serpentine cast, curve cast, and Phil’s signature cast, the down stream roll ahead cast which he taught to Lefty Kreh.

Thanks for watching!
You guys are great! Appreciate ya!
Thanks for watching!
Well done and super helpful!
We try...and thanks so much for watching!
Stu Apt tried to teach me to cast a fly rod at a Ft Lauderdale boat show 30 years ago. He was super nice and patient. And with his rod I got pretty good, but the only one I could afford was awful and I never caught a fish on it. Maybe I should try again with better stuff. My biggest problem wasn't distance, the line would end up in a pile instead of stretching out straight in the end.
Thanks for watching and I'd definitely suggest giving it another try!
Great video guys!!
What causes that bundling of line just in front of the rod tip on the forward cast? Bringing the rod down too far?
I'm kind of an amateur and "self taught" so trying to "undo" some bad technique!!
Thanks and have a great weekend!!
Thanks for watching. It's difficult to assess what's going on with a cast without seeing it.
I had this problem when I was learning, it was happening because I wasn’t accelerating to a stop and casting like I was bait casting.
@@therantingangler Honestly, I think that may be the issue. I tend to get stuck in a "windshield wiper" motion - with no change in momentum. The whole "accelerate to a stop" is what I need to work on...among a few other things!! lol
Might find an empty field at a local school and go practice that some more! Thanks so much!!
Hello Dave. Love the tips. How much do you charge for teaching?
Thanks for watching. I'll try and get you my contact info.
