The Ranting Angler
США
Добавлен 12 янв 2023
Our goal is to provide high quality educational content to give anglers more knowledge to enjoy and pursue the sport of fly fishing.
The Ranting Angler started with a blog in May of 2021 by Dave Rothrock. The blog was a way for Dave to share his knowledge of fly fishing gained from many years of fly fishing and guiding. Over the years, Dave made multiple appearances on the Suffering Outdoors RUclips channel with John Kolb. The videos John and Dave did together drew a lot of interest and fanfare. The idea to start a RUclips channel was born out of a meeting in a sub shop in Williamsport, PA while eating cheesesteaks. Dave and John decided to join forces to create The Ranting Angler channel to publish future video content relating to fly fishing.

Rattle Snakes and Wild Browns - Fly Fishing and Camping in Pennsylvania
The Ranting Angler Crew camps and fly fishes a popular limestone stream in Pennsylvania. It was one of many annual fly fishing trips the group does together. We had a great time fly fishing and spending time in the mountains of Pennsylvania. We caught lots of fish, made some great memories and encountered a rattle snake. It was during the Slate Drake hatch, most fish were caught using nymphs. Some fish were willing to take a dry.

I hit the water near the end of December to to a little fly fishing and winter camping in my hot tent. I caught my first tiger trout! This is a mix between a brook trout and a brown trout. The fish I could was beautiful and had been in the water for a long time. It's fins were perfect and it was a very strong fighter. I do believe the fish was likely a stocked trout. Although it was likely stoc...

Nice video...camping and fishing videos are great.
My favorite type of fly fishing videos!
Great, but now ill have snake dreams tonight lol.
Clayton said it looked like good rattle snake habitat, he was right. I was hoping he was wrong!
What was water temp?
I don’t recall exactly but I believe in the low 50s
Really enjoy your content. Looks like a great trip! Thanks for sharing
Much appreciated! We had a good time. Tight lines!
NICE VID you guys ever fish the SOHO/WATAUGA down south, or around Boone NC.
Have not, but of if I ever make it to NC, I’ll try to check it out!
@@therantingangler That's the west side of the State, bet you would really like hooking Albies off the beach here @Cape Lookout, been doing that for over 20 years. where 10 weights go to die, lol Hope all is well.
Where was this stream?
In the mountains
@@claytongood1108 Thanks.
Nice video, guys! The rattle snake i would have run and been done, lol. Beautiful browns.
Thanks! I’m not a fan of snakes at all! Jason likes catching them and finding them.
Jason is crazy 😂
You guys are good fishing buddies. Nice to see. Thanks for taking me along.
Thanks for watching! We always have a good time fishing together.
Size 10?!!! In my area that is considered a Pterodactyl! Sulfurs in 16-20 here are very common here in Tn. Great video!
Love the videos. Can you please describe your line and leader setup? I’m very new to the sport and would love to copy your setup to try. Thank you
Hi Corey, thanks for watching. It depends if I'm fishing dry flies or nymphing. For dries I was using a 7ft 5x tapered leader. For nymphing I was essentially using the same thing but at the end of the leader I add a split shot then have the nymphs tied off of little tags above the split shot. You can see this setup here... ruclips.net/video/UTsnjd0YpR0/видео.html
Wow! Nice video. Love seeing this side of Scott and Dave from a 3rd person view, you get to see full mechanics.
Nice video!
Thanks Dennis!
Belly so fat 🤣🤣🤣 10:00
Hi Nick, thanks for watching. I was checking out your channel and subscribed. Was curious if Caroline ever fishes with you? I've been trying to get my wife into fly fishing haha. Maybe when the kids get older.
She use to more often, things got tough having a baby! Pregnant for 9 months, our baby Aurora is 5months old. Plus, as my adventures become more bold and more sketchy, arduous or cold, she has dropped off quite a bit haha. She’s definitely a fair weather fisher haha. I’ve considered rebranding the channel etc but we’ll see where it goes! There are a couple great videos of her catching fish. Check out the CarolineAndNick playlist for a sweet saltwater montage with her in it and an ice cold brown. There’s some PA fishing too.
Nice to run into you yesterday, hope you got some good video there on Penns. Keep up the good work.
Nice meeting you Dennis! That night was super slow but we caught enough fish today to get some good footage. Will be working on it and hopefully positing in a couple of weeks.
why the name...Blue Quill..
I don’t know the origination of the name. Maybe because their wings have a blueish tint.
very educational... love the pics showing the fly
With so much rain this spring most days seem to have had dirty or high water or both. The water you were fishing looked ideal.
Yeah we have had plenty of water. I think these smaller streams fish best in that state. The off color water gives you a little cover from the fish.
Great video love your videos love watching Dave fish
I’ve learned a lot from watching Dave fish, thanks for watching!
Lovely video
9 foot rod? I use a 3 wt. also but a 7 1/2 foot rod. Nice video.
Yep, we were both using 9’ rods. It’s nice having a little more length to control line and eliminate drag but a shorter rod is nicer in tight spaces.
Really nice looking water. Loved when you called it on that grass clump fish lol 😂
Haha, I saw the water from the other side of the stream and there was a cutout under the clump of grass. It didn’t look good from where we were standing so Dave was having a hard time figuring out where I was talking about lol.
What a great looking stream! Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for watching! Hard to beat the color on spring creeks!
This is one of my favorite fly fishing channels! Great videos!
Thanks so much for watching and supporting our channel!
Great video…never thought to wear the rain jacket outside of the pack before
Haha maybe for good reason, not the best for accessing and putting back your net.
Hey John! Great day, you had it all, nymphing, dries, brookies, rainbows and browns. That was a fun day! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Scott! It was a fun day despite being rained out!
Good video. Dave.. sharp as a tack. I will have to get back for the green drakes.
I looked so forward to watching this very important rally of so many people from the Bronx to see President Trump. It is incredible but there is just ONE thing and it has to do with FOX NEWS camera quality. It really sucked. So many digitalizing blank outs and very poor focus from the camera feed. I could not believe how low the quality was It is a disgrace to FOX NEWS.
This was a great video in terms of just seeing a different approach than what most people are showing on youtube. Also Scott at this point is like every person's friend they have never met yet.
Haha yeah Scott is like that high school friend you haven’t seen in 10 years and it’s like you just hung out a couple days ago. Super nice guy.
What stream is this? “Pennsylvania’s finest”?
Great video John! How do you like your Orvis sling pack? I was thinking of switching over to that from a vest?
Thanks for watching! I do like it, there are times where it hurts my neck / shoulder area but I do like being able to swing it to my back when I’m fishing. I did a review on my suffering outdoors channel. Link is here. ruclips.net/video/wMUIYA4YsoM/видео.htmlsi=Hw211jybtYVW3XvQ
@@therantingangler thanks
Good tips here. Practicing on the grass is nice. But over many years I fished a marginal stream 2-3 times a week during reasonable weather. Sometimes for only an hour at a time and without wading. That helped my fishing immensely.
Cool video, and nice of you to feature Dave and Scott. It’s great to be able to view those two from a bank-side view…learned a lot. Scott doing his typical thing and putting fish in the net 😀..you all did well. Love Penns!
Thanks for watching! Dave and Scott are two great anglers to learn from.
I love watching the fellowship between friends. Beautiful fishing too
Fly fishing with friends is the best! We look forward to our annual fishing / camping trip each year!
Good video with some great fellas on a great stream! Tightlines!
Much appreciated Craig!! I’ve been enjoying your camping videos. Looking forward to green leaves and campfires myself.
Great video and outing. Cool to see a full view of Scott fishing.
Another great video Scott! Are your stoneflies weighted?
If I remember correctly, he did have beads in his stone fly. My stone fly was not beaded as I was using a drop shot rig. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Love it guys!
Love Penns, Dave! Giving me the itch to hit it! Great video guys.
Thanks for watching, Corey. Problem is there have been these short windows of opportunity so far this year.
Nice video I’ve seen both of those guys you were with today they’re both great fisherman
Thanks for watching, yes, they both know their way around a trout stream! I’ve learned a great deal from Dave Rothrock over the years.
I really want to fish with Dave someday. Thanks much for the video!
Thanks for watching, Brian. You know that can happen!
@@daverothrock8372 I’ll make it happen at some point. But finding time away from kids sports right now is proving very challenging!
Great video! Well done.
Thanks for watching Jim!
Thanks John, nice video footage. Nice brown you caught. Congrats
Thanks Jeff! Glad you watched the video! Have a great day!
Very nice video, thanks for taking the time to shoot the footage & upload it, much appreciated! All 3 of you are great guys and have helped new fly fishers like me so much over the years. Thanks!
Awesome, glad to hear. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Howdy Great video you got two of the best teachers with you that day lol. Penns is Paradise, good job. PS I hope to see more of the hatch education videos you did last year peace✌️
We are definitely doing another one this season. Probably within the next month or so.

Good morning John and Dave! Great fun and fellowship. That dry fly action was awesome, thanks to Dave for cracking the code 👍🏻. Looking forward to our next outing together. Thanks for sharing.
