Tiago Nunes you kinda have to. He's very educated on a lot of things but he likes to cut people off a lot and co trip the conversation. Particularly when his beliefs are challenged.
This guy is great. I am 16 years old and he is inspiring me to be more interested in the sciences. Before I really found him and Carl Sagan I thought that Science was pretty boring but the way that he explains things you can't help but be intrigued.
Jeff Spicoli so scientist want to but the issue is getting election. There are actually several discussions of this. Ya see, it's hard for scientists to get elected when many of them are atheist or agnostic. When 50% of America still believes in their sky king it's a recipe for failure. But in time I hope this changes.
Jaunius Sinkevičius "progressiveness" is vague. which progressive aspect do you not like? Our scientific progression? our racial tolerance progression? our progress of social issues?
You've set up multiple attempts of counting those things as positive. How about ridiculous racial sensitivity, dumb regressive ideas on what social good is, scientific progression i can agree with but the notion that you're a great person because of dogma is just as idiotic as the worst creationist literature.
Stevie Wonder said it best "When you believe in things that you don't understand, Then you suffer, Superstition ain't the way". Neil illuminates wherever he goes.
As far as I can tell, your target demographic is black Americans. Having said that, I applaud you for having Dr. Tyson on your show. So few shows with that target demographic feature guests or topics of science, especially those who do not believe any of the major world religions. I think that a component of ending racism is showing that black and other non-white/asian* people can be physicists, engineers, mathematicen, chemists, and biologists. *Let's be honest, we all believe that the Asians are the best at math, but that's likely due to cultural differences in the administration of primary and secondary education in those countries and cultures. There's no racism in that--the same way that there is no racism in this: Black folks may be dominating sports because of 400 years of selective breeding. It's a plausible thing based on facts and science. I'm not commenting on the value of one culture or ethnicity. These are just things that may be true because of real differences that a we have the power to make in our discrete societies.
its easy to think things are bad today, because of all the negativity in media. harder to imagine how much worse our ancestors had it. the trend is romanticism about a past we don't live in and have little connection to personally. medicine, agriculture, and technology have drastically reduced mortality rates. the difference is, our attitude to death and our acceptance of its regular occurrence has drastically changed. that is progress.
But who in their right mind would ever attempt to go back in time in order to prevent their own parents from meeting and creating the child that would soon be revealed to be the time traveler in this instance?
"The data does not support that emotion..." histrionics and fear never resolved a problem without creating more problems...We can take a breath and have some strategy to improving. I understand riots and protest and why they feel necessary, but I want to execute a plan that the enemy doesn't see coming and only know what happened after it happened.
To me, the number of people who got killed per hour in 1939 is not as significant as the minds of those who are doing the killing- which in fact hasn't changed since 1939; its gotten worse.
Random number generation, computer models, etc. Math is eerily accurate at predicting a huge amount of things. Math is so effective, they banned it from casinos.
He dodge the question about the people of summerian. How did they know about the planets location? This was so long ago they had zero technology to know that.
Neil is making it sound like the political socioeconomic conditions that led to ww1 and ww2 are guaranteed not to occur again. plus he neglected Vietnam war. and Iraq war. it's amazing to see how influential one's class privilege is in distorting one's sociopolitical perspective. characteristics of class divide are the most consistent. it trumps ethnicity, religion or nationality
No, he didn't make it sound like that, it is actually your ideological stance and bias that made you read that between the lines, even though he didn't say that. Of course with WWII he took an extreme example, but still, it's a fact that our times are much more peaceful than then the majority of the history - even with all your majro problems.
david the bullshit dishonest numbers game can be shamelessly played in many ways. for example there are more black American prisoners than there were black American slaves 200 years ago..progress??? this garbage progress narrative is used by those that don't have the strength, courage and sympathy to fight for the oppressed people people of the world. it's choosing personal status and privilege over social justice.
Fred Hampton's Ghost Neil compared today's time with ww2 because the impacts are much more prominent of ww2 (at least to Western media). One's socioeconomic perspective definitely shapes his/her view and Neil is no exception. And I don't think he garrentees that events like ww1 or 2 wouldn't repeat, bad things still happens today there is no denying that. But because of the overall advancement in liberal mindset by the majority of people (hopefully) , frequency of such events are less.
Fred Hampton's Ghost progress cannot and shouldn't be denied. It doesn't mean everything is fine, not even close, there's more then plenty to do but we are making progress. I suspect it's your ideological lens is what distorts reality for you bu you have to accept that the world can make progress on other paths then what you prefer.
david What I prefer?? Justice is not my personal preference. It is dignity, humanity and power seized by those consistently and relentlessly oppressed and exploited for wealth and profit. I guess reading MLK Jr's last book, *Where do we go from here? Chaos or Community" (last book before being assassinated by capitalist interests) has really distorted reality.
I'm a fan of Neil's work but I respectfully disagree with his view of progress. Malcolm X said "if you stick a knife into my back and pull it out three inches, that's not progress. Even if you pull it all the way out, that's not progress. Progress is healing the wound and America hasn't even begun to pull the knife out."
And what would you like America to do about that exactly ? Go back in time and change human history and abolish slavery that all cultures and ethnicity's took part in ? Make an even bigger welfare system to help even more of the disenfranchised people than we already do at the cost of everyone elses life ? Rig a system to the point where all you have to do is be of a certain ethnicity and you get carte blanche over everyone else in all aspects of schooling and employment like we already do ? You know at some point a mirror has to be looked into. Nobody can do for you what you can't do for yourself and that's just the reality of this world. Try being a poor disenfranchised white person see how far that gets you in life. I mean lets be real huh, none of us give a shit about your problems because we all have our own. In fact I dare say you're about 50 years removed from most of us giving a shit. And with that attitude the next 50 will be just as shitty. The more you label the more you get labeled right...
Gabi2484 thanks for calling this out. I'm disappointed in Neil. he's only praising the system he's fortunate enough to benefit from. he's unable or unwilling to see beyond that.
drtrolish a time machine to stop cattle slavery-or any slavery would be awesome! as to the rest, there are more white people on welfare in this country than there are black people in the country regardless of socioeconomic level. also, blacks and other minorities where not allowed welfare-even vets (!) until the later part of the 20th century. please do some research. as to Malcom X, he was demanding equil treatment...what the hell is so wrong with that? wouldn't you fight for your rights?
You don't have the answers Sway!
But Neil does.

***** what?
How could you dislike him?
Greenery those people hate accepting the fact that their wrong.
i don't like his ideas on progressiveness. Wow, people can disagree and both be educated and civil, that's a new one right.
Jaunius Sinkevičius So where's your argument?
Jaunius Sinkevičius "progressiveness" is vague. which progressive aspect do you not like? Our scientific progression? our racial tolerance progression? our progress of social issues?
You've set up multiple attempts of counting those things as positive. How about ridiculous racial sensitivity, dumb regressive ideas on what social good is, scientific progression i can agree with but the notion that you're a great person because of dogma is just as idiotic as the worst creationist literature.

If you can go faster and go forward in time shouldn’t you be able to go slower and go back in time?

But who in their right mind would ever attempt to go back in time in order to prevent their own parents from meeting and creating the child that would soon be revealed to be the time traveler in this instance?
10:26 pretty much every internet troll
like I said
that moment when you realize if sway isn't on the show, the title will mess something up!! Spell his name right. Dumb.
Space cowboy just like the late great RILEY MARTIN.
NdGT is the man but Fred Whitfield might have something to say about being the "only black cowboy."
"The data does not support that emotion..." histrionics and fear never resolved a problem without creating more problems...We can take a breath and have some strategy to improving.
