Contragulations. Regarding the "Livret de Famille", it's nothing to sneer at. It is actually one of your most important piece of documenation. File it really securely, because when you will become a French citizen in four year's time, and when you will have children (if that's your wish) this will become one of the proof of French nationality to be issued a Carte d'Identité, either for yourself or your children. It is tremendously important.
Actually, the livret de famille can’t be used when you’re applying for a carte d’identité. Believe it or not, they are often full of mistakes... So cool you explained all of this. I didn’t know there was so much to do to get married in France. My husband and I eloped and we live in the US. We decided on either Sunday or Monday that we would go get married on Friday (yes, just a few days later) and we went into the courthouse on Friday morning and got married. It was that fast and simple 😂
Congratulations!! I love your channel so much! I'm French but I have been living in the UK for over 3 years and it's really nice to watch you talk about all the French traditions and things that we do, it makes me feel at home, so merci! 😘
Hi, Small correction, in France, you can not "replace" your last name with your husband last name. You can use it, but it's not your legal name. So can your husband do. So if Mr. X marry Mrs. Y, he can say, "hey I Mr. X, or Mr. Y, or Mr. X-Y, or Mr. Y-X." (and he can change it every time he want). But for all legal stuff, like asking for a new passport, he stay Mr.X, and Mrs Y is only Mrs Y.
GAJA Geek Right ! As a wife, I added my husband’s name to mine but the only legal last name is the birth name, from birth til death. The husband’s last name is called « nom d’usage ». That’s all.

Congrats! My sister had a really small, lovely civil wedding this summer as well and could not recommend it enough. All the best to you and your husband!
Felicitations!! I’ve just tied to knot in a foreign country as well and went through a very similar process. Have enjoyed your videos for quite a while now but I’m commenting for the first time. Nice to see France (again) from the perspective of someone living there not as a student :)

Rosie congratulations again! Love the laid back relaxed style of your wedding, such a wonderful idea 💡 wish I had done something like that! Looks like a gorgeous day!
Hi Rosie, Congratulations! 😎 Just to let you know that back in the 60' a foreign spouse just had to register the marriage at a French consulate if married abroad and one week later he or she would receive automatically a French passport, nationality being acquired through marriage. Times have changed... Bisous.
Congratulations Madame, I fully understand your efforts of the French marriage, I have to do the documents twice and all the notary before it expired as we extend the marriage date. Felicitation!
Love your video once again, the content is SO helpful! So neat to actually SEE what a livret familial looks like -- they just talk about it on the website but I had no idea what it was. Now it's so clear! We went to a French wedding and was SO surprised that dinner started at 10pm! 😱 Question: doesn't the PACS help you to get the spousal Visa?
just found your channel and enjoying your videos, (I know it is a year later) just a question about translations, how did it end up stressful and expensive, I know last minute is stressful, but in Marseille I payed once 25 euros and because in my country the cert doesn't change anytime I need one I get the translation in date, so I go to the office get one printed out for free. You'll need translations for other things later on so keep in mind you may just need to ask for a printout from the office you went to. Bye
I am French and I like your videos. I also got married abroad and that's when I discovered the particularity of the French law regarding the names of married couples. In France you can legally "use" your husband's name (it's called "nom d'usage"), but your actual name will always be your maiden name. It's like you can borrow it (it is legal) but it's never really yours. It is a strange legal thing that doesn't exist anywhere else as far as I know. The country where I got married allows legally changing names but because of the French particular law, I didn't have this option.
OMG, somehow I missed any & all announcements about your engagement, but I am SO EXCITED for you. I definitely have the other video in my watch later list...somewhere. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Congrats to you. I just subscribed so I am a little late to do this. Love your videos. I lived in Paris for 4 years back in 2003 and loved it. Best to you.
Best Wishes to you and Congratulations to your husband! Thanks for explaining the legalities of marriage. Maybe if we had that in America, couples would take into consideration the seriousness of this life event. I love the reading of the laws and the recognition of future children. Weddings and Marriage are more than just the dress, the ring, the cake and the guest list. Blessings on you both!
Hi Rosie ! Congratulations ! I'm a french teacher for foreigners (prof de FLE) and your videos about culture shocks inspire me a lot ! I got married in Normandy 2 years ago, ans I definitely agree with you : the ceremony in the mairie is too "legal". I also was shocked by the amount of references to children and family, especially because I'm still not sure if we will have some.. Thanks for sharing all those interesting views about french culture. Best regards, Virginie.
Sorry if this was already cleared, but it's not the birth certificate itself that expires. It is the validity of the specific copy you are given. The original is stored and you don't have it. These copies have an expiracy date to avoid identity theft or other unpleasant things I guess ?
Just a little add to your statement about the application to the French citizenship once you are married to a Frenchman or Frenchwoman, it can indeed be done 5 years after the day of your wedding but as far as I know, you need to be living in France during all the process of the application and not abroad. Not 100% sure, best way to know is to check with the French consulate where you live. Once you're French, you can choose to live wherever you want to ;)
Toutes mes félicitations Rosie 😀 My sister who's French got married in Queenstown and I absolutely LOVED that place, it's just beautiful, romantic, peaceful (but sooo cold !!!) Thé landing on the airport tarmac, between two mountains was a stunning vies. Thé wedding official célébration and party d'été both great, so I'm sure you'll have a great time having jour wedding Kiwi party there 😀😎 PS: I'm French and I do love thé Livret de Famille, yours is beautiful, and it's quite Moving to have all thé official family évents written there. Are you going to make your marriage official in NZ or at your embassy since you're an expat? PPS: it's true that thé Code Civil mentions the duty or taking care or your children but did you know that in France, since a couple or years I think, there are more children born out of wedlock than from married couples. I think it's thé highest rate un Europe !! Not only do we make thé most kids in Europe (equal with our Irish Friends) but the majority of them don't have married parents. I thought it would be Scandinavian countries, but no, it's us. We're a strange mix or traditions/old school habits and modernity, we're a paradox 😂 I think the PACS helps that. I suppose It also means that when people do marry here, it's more to do with romantic reasons...
I’m horribly late!!!! I saw your post on Instagram saying you got married. I was sure I posted a congratulations response........ I don’t see it 😭 I shall post here and say a hearty congratulations!!! I wish you and your hubby a blissful eternity of joy and ever abiding love. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations Rosie. I don’t use Instagram that much then I didn’t even know you were going to be a Madame... I hope you the best to your new family. 🎉🍰🥂🎈
We're Brits living in France and went for a civil partnership (P.A.C.S.). It was a beaurocratic nightmare - even the Notaire was baffled by the new documents we kept being asked for. Anyway, on our 5th attempt they suddenly said OK & lets do it now. As a result I got married wearing jeans & T shirt! We were so shocked that for quite a while afterwards we weren't even sure if we were truely married! One difference to your experience was we didn't need witnesses present which is fortunate as on the day we never thought for a minute it would actually happen.
Congratulations on your wedding!! That's funny how a new zealander living in France would have the same thoughts about the wedding hussle as a berarusian 😀 We had almost exactly the same wedding with 2 different parties and a 10 min ceremony without exchanging rings even 😂😂😂 Thank you for this video, it made me smile a lot 😀😀😀
Thank you. I gave up last year because of the fuss in paperwork. We may try again for this year. I was told I had to go to Paris and get our documents apostied? and with Covid and so many other admin things it was too much. Don’t change your name, I did in the UK and it causes no end of problems and paperwork issues, an absolute nightmare. I’ll be keeping my current name when we marry.
hey!!! Rosie Congratulation for your Marriage!!!!!!! I have been in France for 9 months now as expat from India & I must say I have been following you on you-tube from last 7 months . Your video has great content!!! its helped me incredible ways to know French Culture , People, there life , food, Actions, Shocks ha ha etc. I would relate many of your videos with my experience in France that to in pairs. Thanks a lot !!! Rosie for your effort for making this many videos they are best!!! Thank you Cheers!!!
In The Netherlands you have to get married at a town hall first too, before getting married at a church. There are some locations that have a license to get married at, but typically people go to a town hall first. We have a little booklet as well!
Its important to mention that once you mention your witnesses on the official request for marriage at the town hall and if one of them is a no show at the actual ceremony the ceremony will not happen
Hey!!!so funny, I have a similar “ French marriage saga” as shall we call it haha :). We also decided to get married 4 months before the day and the date was chosen based on the expire date of the documents haha. My now-husband’s aunt also works part time at the Mairie and she was the one marring us also with a beautiful speech :) (btw we got married in a town about 20 minutes away from Avignon!) we didn’t exchange rings tho’. We also kept our names since we both have two family names and as You said, that would be just TOO MUCH WORK 😂We also had a simple garden party with family and closest friends :) Btw, they accepted the documents that were sworn translated back in my country ... we got married in last February so maybe things changed? Nice to see a similar experience been shared by you! And yeah, better get used to the “madam x” even if you didn’t take his name 😂
Congratulations to you both! 💕✌🌹. That was a unique celebration for sure. A bit complicated but interesting. Hubby and I got married through court marriage in NZ and it was so much easier! 😊.
Don't forget to register your French marriage at the New Zealand embassy. It is not automatic.
And, congratulations!
Jidé same thing for registering the French marriage at the American embassy right?
Great idea having two celebration parties, one in France and one in New Zealand so both families can celebrate with you. Felicitations

hey!!! Rosie Congratulation for your Marriage!!!!!!! I have been in France for 9 months now as expat from India & I must say I have been following you on you-tube from last 7 months . Thanks a lot !!! Rosie for your effort for making this many videos they are best!!! Thank you Cheers!!!
Congrats!!! Beautiful bride :)))
Congrats on your wedding!
Oh you live near Avignon? Me too! (I was surprised because Avignon is not really known excepted for its bridge 😂)
Just found your channel. Love your videos. Thanks Connie
Congratulations! So happy for you. 🎉
Congratulations Madame! Im so happy for you guys!
Félicitations! J’aime beaucoup tes vidéos.
Congratulation!!! All wishes of happiness and love 😘😘
"Je te rassure", those papers expire in Australia and they have to be translated by a translator in Australia as well.
In The Netherlands you have to get married at a town hall first too, before getting married at a church. There are some locations that have a license to get married at, but typically people go to a town hall first. We have a little booklet as well!
It makes sense considering that the Dutch civil code comes partly from the French civil code.
In France, if you get married at a church you have to get married at a city hall before, like in Holland.
Perth Fanny | this stems from the idea that state and religion should be separated. No matter what religion you are, first you get married legally.
@@eleo_b this is what I thought!
I live in Spain and you can get married religiously without having to go to the city hall 🤔

Congratulations!!
Bravo!!! Félicitations à tous les deux!!
So sweet!! Congrats!! 🍾👰🏻🤵🏻💞
That's wonderful!
Its important to mention that once you mention your witnesses on the official request for marriage at the town hall and if one of them is a no show at the actual ceremony the ceremony will not happen
Voted! And congratulations!!
CONGRATULATIONS !
CONGRATULATIONS !!!
Congrats to you both!
Félicitations Rosie !
amazing! congratulations x
Haha excellent! I'm from Avignon myself and getting married next weekend with my Chilean fiance ;) congrats to you both !
South of Corsica is the most beautiful, between Bonifacio an Porto-Vecchio. That would be awesome to actually meet you in Queenstown !!
Félicitations Dame Rosie, et à ton preux chevalier.
Félicitation Rosie! 😘🍾🥂👏
Congratulations to both of u.A bold step indeed, lot more adjustments on the card, brace for that Good luck.
Congratulations to you both! 💕✌🌹. That was a unique celebration for sure. A bit complicated but interesting. Hubby and I got married through court marriage in NZ and it was so much easier! 😊.
All best wishes! You look really pretty.
Voted for you.
Congratulation for your wedding !
