  • Video featuring my ES 175 equipped with a Charlie Christian microphone. These guitars were a kinda reissue of the famous prewar ES-150 Charlie Christian. However, the two models are structurally and soundwise very different. The ES-175 has a laminated top and the microphone, although very similar in appearance, was also built completely differently.
    Here, I am playing one of my very favorite bossa novas. Estate is tune written by the italian composer Bruno Martino. It's been on my repetoire since decades.
    Recording chain: Guitar- Reverb (Mad Professor) - Polytone Babybrute amp - Shure SM57. At first, I also recorded the acoustic sound (see mic' on the video) but there was too much bleeding from the rhythm section. So I didn't keep the acoustic sound in the final mix.
    The guitar is set up with Thomastik Infeld Bebop strings (0.012 - 0.050).

      The Thomastik Bebop strings go very well on that guitar. They add a nice piece of brightness. Not too much, just what is necessary for my taste; Cheers.

    Wonderful sound! I'll practice this song 'estate'. I listened this music first time.
    I watch your playing everyday.
    Could i know tone and volume knob control? And amp eq flat?
    I have polytone mini brute 3.
    Thankyou! Good jazz life!

      Hey Mr. Surfgreen. Sorry, I get our message only now. Whatever my guitar, tone control is always at 2.5 - 3.0, that is when your mic' starts to open and breaks a little bit the mellow sound. It's an eq easy to get with a guitar in hands. That's what I prefer. Volume is usually from 5 to 7 unless I want to get a more dirty sound which is rarely the case. Amp eq is flat. Hope this helps. Take care and be safe.

      Hello Karim. Cool de te voir passer par là. Par contre, la navigation Néo-Zélandaise, j'ai pas capté... Il me tarde de te retrouver. On a failli jouer le week-end dernier, chez Aïcha, mais JM a du annuler au dernier moment. Bises.

      Hi Gianni. I switch often from pick to pick. Used to play on very thick ones (3mm made out of horn) but I have changed ultimately for more conventional picks. That one is a Dunlop Ultex, thickness must be 1.0 mm or something close. Cheers.

    It sounded surprisingly warm, I would have originally thought that the CC pickups will sound closer to P90 than humbucker but I could differentiate this one than say Jim Hall's tone.
    I am thinking of buying a CC or getting a 175 retrofitted with reproduction pickups.
    Do you think the 175CC is worth going or the reproduction pickups are better?

    • @FredArchtop
      @FredArchtop  3 года назад +1

      Hi. As you can hear, the CC PU mounted on a 175CC is not sounding like a real CC. But it's still a nice tone. I have no idea on how a 175 with a retrofitted CC would sound...Cheers.

      @@FredArchtop It doesn't sound to me anything like 175 CC. How did you record it? It seems Gibson had stash of various vintage CC parts and assembled them randomly with whatever they had in their hand. Different magnets and wire gauges. I don't believe they have created reissue pickup from the scratch for a such a small series. It was a Norlin era and money waste was a no no.Can somebody from Kalamazoo enlighten us ? Anyways, one of my favorite tunes. Cheers

      @@bekoinwonderland1119 Hey Beko, I agree with you it doesn't have the characteristic CC sound, but just like all 175CC I ever tried in my life. It seems that Gibson produced these CC copies from scratch in the late 70s and, as you say, the didn't respect the original wire gauge or number of turns. For a more comprehensice comparison of different CC PU, see my video here: ruclips.net/video/0LMCcfI6AkA/видео.html&ab_channel=FredArchtop
      Best.

    There's a 1979 ES-175CC on Reverb that I'm thinking about buying for $4,600. Any words of wisdom when buying a guitar like this?

    • @FredArchtop
      @FredArchtop  5 месяцев назад

      The one in Canada I guess. Buying on reverb is always a bet. Ask for more pics, how is the fretboard, electronics etc. And enjoy if you pull the trigger! Cheers.

    "... the microphone, although very similar in appearance, was also built completely differently." Could you share the difference in construction between this pickup and the 'original' CC pickup? Thanks in advance for any information.

    • @FredArchtop
      @FredArchtop  2 года назад

      I've read somewhere that the metal alloy of the reissued CC was completely different. Also, the wire gauge has nothing to do with the original CC. Indeed, they sound very different side by side.
