I make plenty of mistakes, I try to make it very clear in most of my vids to make sure you do more research than what I’m telling them for that exact reason. Every car you’ve mentioned like C4 corvette and E39 I’ve mentioned multiple times in other videos and most likely made mistakes on those too. Again, thank you for making the video, I’m a lil salty at some of the roasts but in the end I understand the video will be nothing but helpful to ppl looking to get a car under $5k, and even tho most ppl seem to think I only care ab the views, I really do just enjoy helping ppl along in their car journey so when I see someone correcting the mistakes I made, I gotta put my pride aside and respect the person trying to help others. Keep doing you bro (maybe go a bit easier on the roasts next time tho lmao)

the first generation Mazda 6 with the V6/manual is somewhat quick and easily obtainable for sub-$5k for a really nice example. If you find the S model, its also a hatchback with folding rear seats, so its really practical and modestly entertaining to drive. Mazdaspeed 6 is worth mentioning as well, but theyre a little harder to find in nice condition at that price, but if you find one then you'll get a awd turbo 4 cylinder in an unassuming body. The early cars have rust issues so watch out for that.

Okay, Saab person here who got a TOP of the line 9-3 here. I got INSANELY lucky with my Saab, and had to travel over 200 miles to get it. It wasn't perfect when I got it either, and I've been working on it a lot (Mostly mods and good maintenance), it's always going to be a really hard call if you want a V6 (much more rare, more expensive to own, WAY better potential for power) or a 2.0T (Cheaper in all aspects to live with aside from trying to make more than 300hp).
If you get a 2.0T (avoid 2.0t because these are GM punishment tier cars with a baby turbo and etc), aim for 03-07, which are all fwd. XWD on a 2.0T is just useless.
If you get a used V6, mostly avoid the 06 model year because it's a genuine pain to remove the SAI on them (something basically every 2.8T owner does) due to there being a heater pipe on the rear manifold. If you can score an XWD, go for it, because it's easily the best AWD system I've ever used. If you can't, no big deal, the 2.8T is still a massive treat. And for 06+, all Aero models were the 2.8. Side note: you basically need to buy an eSID module due to how it's building a code reader and all gauges into your display, but also familiarize yourself with WIS and eSaabParts (This goes for all modern Saabs)
But yeah no don't listen to the guy in the first bit, the 9-3 and 9-2x are nothing alike

    • @NewScottishGentry
      @NewScottishGentry 10 месяцев назад +2

also a SAAB guy here, you’re totally correct. you can find ratted out ng 9-3 linear with the 2.0t for under 5k all day, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a manual and you’ll have to put a couple grand into it to make decent power. i’ve been looking for a facelift Aero XWD/Turbo X for a while, and am pretty much resigned that i’m going to have to drop 20k+ on a clean low mileage one.
IMO in the context of this video, the 9-5 would’ve been a better option. I bought my ‘01 9-5 Aero 5MT with 136k on it, that was super clean but needed a clutch for $2400. 2k for a new clutch and to have my mechanic buddy to help me put it in and for $4400 I had a nice daily that pulls nicely on the highway. The manuals are harder to find but they’re out there, and you can get a 2.3t for the low and mod it, they’re pretty easy to work on - lots of space under the hood with the 2.3 in there, and the turbo is in the correct spot up front. difference between the B235E and the L/R is just the turbo and the tune, and the Aero uses the same TD04 as the WRX so they’re cheap and easy to find. swap the turbo and change the shocks/springs out for the bilsteins and you’ve got an Aero, basically.
I think any 9-5 Aero auto or manual is probably the cheapest car that’ll do 155 mph stock, at the moment imho.

A VQ (at least, the VQ37 in the 370) actually sounds BEST with a single exit, IMO. As long as it also has long tube headers, high flows, and some kind of muffler in the middle. PLUS it makes the most power, at least if your Y-pipe is sized properly.

Okay so I’m a diehard E38 fan (my first car was an E38 740i sport package) and I owned a 540i and I wanna make a few points about this. 1. Do NOT buy one of these under $5k. The E38/E39 tax has hit super hard and finding any E38/E39 540 under 5k means it has absurd mileage on it or it was treated like absolute shit. I recently sold my 540 automatic in Royal red for $4k but it had 250k miles on the odometer. Since I’m a BMW tech I knew the car was solid but I’m a special case. 2. These are NOT DIY-friendly cars. The engines may be reliable if maintained properly but the infamous timing chain guides always go out at around 100k miles and are not cheap or fun to do. There’s also the BMW specific scan tools needed to control certain service functions of the car and you’d need some knowledge of the brand if you want to be able to work on these properly. 3. If you do end up deciding to buy one and can handle the maintenance, they are amazing cars to drive. Don’t expect performance like a mustang, but a 282hp V8 is no slouch. Not only that but the auto ZF 5 speed actually handles quite well for being as old as it is. (Also slight nitpick on feed, the early model year E38s did come with manuals though finding one of those are like finding a needle in a haystack. it’s way easier to just manual swap it from a 540, it’s a direct bolt on.) If I had to choose between an E38 and an E39 540, I’d go for the E39 for performance, but the E38 for looks. But again, you won’t be able to find a decent one for under $5k. I wouldn’t put either the E39 or the E38 on a list of top 10 fastest cars for under $5k but a good car I can recommend for under 5k is an E46. They may not be the fastest in the world, but they are fun cars to drive and quite reliable as long as you get the correct engine (any model with a straight six).
Side note: the E65/E66 generation is legitimate garbage, don’t even consider buying one if you know what’s good for you. Those go for dirt cheap and for good reason. They’re ugly as sin, the most unreliable BMW of all time (and that’s saying something), and have super brittle and finicky electronics.

I almost bought one but it had just enough issues to not be worth it for around 2k usd. under 5 in EU gets you a very nice one, maybe even the aero version

Late to the party, but I've got a 96 e38 750il and it's a blast, the auto isn't really all that bad and it handles better than you'd think. The motor and transmission are solid and will hold up to occasional abuse, The V12 in the 750 makes more power and doesn't have all of the reliability issues the V8 has. Too bad the whole rest of the car falls apart before the drivetrain does. Lots of electronics and late 90's doesn't really go together unfortunately. Working through so many electrical gremlins and random little control modules hasn't been very fun. You can find good ones out there that've been taken care of for about 5-8k, but I was a dummy and spent 8k on mine sight unseen. If you're in the market for one do your research beforehand and go look at them before you buy one.

Personally I don't understand why people hate the 3g and 4g Eclipse so much. Is it FWD and not AWD, without a big tuner engine? Yes, but that came in the Lancer, which makes much more sense as a tuner and rally car given the body style. Many sports cars like the Eclipse are for just looking cool and making decent power, such as the TC, Tiburon, Miata, Cobalt, Ion Redline, etc. They're still fun to drive, and that's all people need. DO NOT lump the 3/4g Eclipse with the crossover SUV, because this mentality means Mitsubishi might as well make SUV's and not even try to make a performance car. On top of that, the 2g literally came with FWD for all sub models except one, and in terms of power, it made about the same to a lot more. And the 3/4g look sick. Bad take man, but good video.

Slow car fast is definitely the way to go. Seat time will make you faster than Hp. If I was a young 18 year old man I would recommend a Honda fit, Scion tC, Toyota Yaris, or Corolla. With some relatively affordable suspension mods and tires you can be one of the fastest at an autocross and have a reliable track car that you can do long sessions without worrying about running costs. Definitely the way to go instead of getting a faster car that you can’t even afford to run reliably because you are always fixing or replacing shit.

You are right and I like how he didn't put Mark down really bad because at the end of the day while I don't think Mark Roden does good research on some of the vehicles he talks about (I am a subscriber of his and will remain one) he needed this because if he is to be taken more seriously and gain more subscribers and be more of a trusted person, teacher and informant in the car world he is going to have to dial things in better. I don't have a RUclips channel or anything and I realize it's not easy and probably very time consuming but it is possible. Hopefully Mark sees this and realizes he needs to get a bit crisper and more accurate and have more knowledge about what he is talking about but still keep the quirky personality that we all probably like and can relate to so he can be better and get bigger as a channel instead of getting mad and throwing a fit. But I am putting my money on option A. He doesn't seem like a sensitive guy who would throw a fit and its obvious that Collector Car Feeds meant no malice with this video.

I love my SC to death, but wheels coilovers and exhaust is pretty much all the modding you can do before you have to swap the engine and trans, the 1uz is an insanely reliable engine but to make any decent power with them you’ll spend probably 3-5x the money and effort of just swapping a turbo 2jz+ 6 speed 350z transmission into it, given a choice I would’ve taken a 300 over a 400 all day long

Imo the Sc400 is a good choice however I bought my sc300 for 1450 with 250k miles it's now boosted running flawlessly at 269k and I have about 5-6k invested. Even tho my car is auto it still makes around 400hp. The Toyota a340e(the auto that came in the Lexus sc/supra/cressida/4runner are really strong for what they are. Any SC would be a phenomenal buy for under 5k. They are worth it and based as fuck.

Saab 9-3 Aero (the second highest trim level if you dont count the super rare Hirsch trim) goes for about 3 to 4 thousand dollars here in northern Europe and they are in pretty good condition. Parts (as far as GM parts go) are readily available and some hobbyits even make there own from scratch which they sell on the web. on the other hand, getting a 9-2x or any sporty impreza for that matter is a whole nother story. We're talking minimum 8 to 10k if your lucky to find one and that is if you can find one at all.
If you wanna buy saab, get the 9-3 Turbo X or a 9000, i usually dont approve of GM saab that much (basically because the GM takeover is seen as an act of war by Swedens car entusiasts) but the 9-3 Turbo X is really dope

Update: Ive personally owned a 9-3 1.9Tid Diesel and everything except for the engine (which is a vile concocktion made by Fiat) is pretty damn good and the transmission was one of the smoothest things ive ever touched (ive never felt the warm embrace of women plz help)
the mileage on it was also pretty great. It averaged about 6 to 8 liter per 100 km ( 39.2 to 29.4 MPG) which is fairly decent from a 20 year old diesel.
If your gonna get one i strongly recommend either the first gen Aero ( or Viggen if you can find one) or any gen with 2.0 - 2.3 petrol in them. You get pretty much the same mileage and a whole lota more bang for your buck in a much more relieable engine.
I currently own a 9000 2.3 Turbo from 97, trimmed to 250 hp so it makes about the same power as gen 1 s60 T5 which is a popular cheap thrills car for young people here in Sweden.
The 9000 is a blast to drive, has really good mileage (about the same as 9-3 diesel) and has a trunk that can basically fit an entire football team in it. Bought mine for 2.7 k which was a steal!
Considering most 9000s has either rusted away, bought up by foreign buyers or been tuned to hell by some moonshine drinking dipshit farmer who eventually turned it into a Christmas decoration somewhere, the 9000s are quite hard to come by these days. Therefore you're lucky to find one in good condition for under 5k considering that most go for around 5 to 6 to even 7k if where talking about the aero variant.
Sadly mine is an automatic which basically means that my 250 hp grants me as much of a quarter mile time as a an old man on a lawn mover but overall i think that is a small price to pay for what is essentially one of the greatest pieces of Swedish Automotive History.. (but if you're gonna buy one, for the love of Odin, buy one in manual)
