I am my 86-year-old mother in law caretaker. She has Alzheimer's but grew up in Austria during the war. I make this dish often for her and she loves it, I think because she remembers eating it in her younger years.

My father was from Tilsit, my mother always prepared these for Sunday lunch.

Thank you for another lovely fall/winter recipe. I'll bet they taste even better the second night. I could easily see this being served with egg noodles and extra sauce. I love that you are using capers and anchovy paste. #ComfortFood #Meatballs I hope you had a joyful Oktoberfest and thank you for taking the time to share your recipe with us.

Yes, it tastes great with egg noodles.
      Personally, I don't like noodles.
But there is a reason for that.
For three years I had to eat noodles, with nothing at all, for every lunch.
      Why?
That was right after WW2, and there was nothing else.
      Just noodles and water.

Is it okay to pan sear the meatballs first or is there a reason for just poaching in broth?
