Good. Kinda. The hospital system itself permits different payments. Two doctors, same exact cases and one is making twice as much. Universal healthcare would stop it but, that's fixing the problem. Equality is not in healthcare and this case could be a start.

@Shania Van der Halen I’m referring to Medicare for All. I know how that is because I have Medicare and I can get in a doctor in days mere days. Last summer, my nephew, who is 50 years old and his wife moved out to Arizona. Something they been planning on for 10 years. He got a job right away and started working. By November he wasn’t feeling well and he went to the doctor. By the end of November, he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, with two brain tumors. I had to have brain surgery immediately and was flown to the hospital to do that. His insurance is barking at paying for these pills because they are claiming his lung cancer was “pre-existing“. If we had had universal insurance, he would’ve gone to get a new job and still had the same insurance. I thought. In office they took away “pre-existing” illnesses. I do not know if that’s been repealed by someone or what’s going on, all I know is, they’re having trouble getting their extremely high medical bills paid. People in other countries don’t need to have a go-fund-me in order to not lose their homes, when they get sick or injured and have medical bills. There has to be a better way than how we have been doing it. Back in the 50s 60s 70s and 80s you could get a job with really good insurance benefits. It’s not the same way anymore. Many jobs don’t even provide medical insurance today, so how is someone supposed to have insurance if their job doesn’t provide it? Ugh 😩
@Shania Van der Halen I think your statement on universal healthcare is anecdotal. Do all countries with universal healthcare have months to see doctors? Even major surgery here is need based which can be months if able. On top of insurance, which can make it take longer for approval.
After practicing as a Registered Nurse for the last 10 years, it really disturbs me how much this parallels the overt and covert discrimination I’ve witnessed towards Black minority Nurses. This became even more glaringly obvious after I traveled to many States as a traveling Nurse as well. Glad more people are speaking up and calling out the institutions.
These doctors have a heck of tolerance to suffer thru such discrimination. Black people seem to be to scared to confront these discrimination and belittling and disconcerting happenings against them .
Its real and continues to happen. In my almost 40years in healthcare I have experienced discrimination. I was labeled " angry, aggressive, & confrontational". I have been physically/verbally attacked in addition to being called the "N" word by both staff and patients all while attempting to carry out my job in a professional manner The AVP at my latest contract attempted to denigrate and label me " aggressive" (after speaking with me for all of 2 minutes), and made several "ageism" comments during an important closed door meeting which included ALL of their upper leadership. I had had enough. I politely interrupted her, called out the racist "dog whistle" for what it was, & addressed the "ageism" comments. I politely reminded them that MY company was engaged to address and assist them in fixing their MANY deficiencies to keep them from losing millions in revenue. I politely reminded their upper leadership who were on the video call that any future interactions of this manner will be immediately forwarded to my legal council after notifying state and federal agencies of their multiple areas of regulatory non-compliance along with my recommendations.
Ageism is discrimination. Thanks Grand ma on the go, for sharing your experiences. If more people speak up then more knowledge will be shared and people can better understand all the problems at this hospital system.

Black Professionals are treated that way in Finance as well. You complaining 😒 and showing your backbone usually results in being laid-off or fired and placed on a Black List why it is often challenging to be re-hired sometimes over the course of several years and when some one checks it out like this issue, the core of these attacks have more to do with race.
I'm so exhausted of this. America has a shortage of doctors period and this is what is going on. Let the man practice his craft. I hope he wins but also some oversight of Sutter from an outside institution is needed to build more equity in staff. I wouldn't want to be a patient there at all. If my doctor is stressed that affects my healthcomes.
"The issue runs deeper than we initially thought. Despite facing discrimination due to their skin color, Black medical professionals have been met with robbery and hindrances when attempting to establish hospitals in their own communities. It's clear that we need to address the systemic issues plaguing our neighborhoods before we can effectively address the racism perpetuated by these institutions. While I fully support inclusivity and diversity, it's become evident that we must take matters into our own hands and create our own opportunities, rather than relying on systems that have consistently failed us. By building our own institutions and supporting each other, we can create a more equitable and just future for ourselves and our communities."
I’m in sutter Oakland we have many diverse doctors and nurses. Maybe this one is different . I’m glad you are raising this issue. I love where I work but I think it’s a small hospital that’s had a lot of history in Oakland. I feel lucky I work in sf and Oakland. But Palo Alto is really not that far 😑
Pre-2008, my family member worked at Sumter Oakland. Their Management team used draconian practices when dealing with staff. He was on a 3 week parental leave (FMLA) for a new baby and his Manager called him and demanded that he return to the office because they were short staffed. He felt threatened and went to work. That was a FMLA violation. Sutter is ruthless.
It’s about a diversity quota. Immigrant blacks check off two boxes; Black and minority. I’ve seen another segment on this same issue, breaking it down even further is the fact that there are no dark skinned black physicians employed at Sutter
@@dougedoug2105 this is how our mothers walk away with unexplained fatal injuries after a surgery that shouldn't be complicated. Racist medical systems are deadly to black Americans.

Troy I would agree with you. Most media don't report racism and this station did a fair job, although I felt the reporter came across with an attitude because his tone, makes the story seems not true. So racism needs more empathy in order to reporting it. Thanks 👍

Shocked but not surprised. It’s not only his story, there are other 7 involved in the lawsuit as well. Just because you don’t see it or because it doesn’t happen to you it means that it is not going on. Big respected institutions tend to sweep things under the rug. Sad that he had to sue, lawsuits are long an uncomfortable with much victim blaming. But I hope the truth come forth whatever it might be. Most probably it will settle out of court and be hushed.
This isn’t diagnosing discrimination. That’s adverse reaction based on doctors discriminating people with certain health conditions and brushing off their symptom. Also can gear towards Medical gas lighting.
I am so sorry this ignorance is still going on, even in the professional world. Recent years seem to have given (( some people)) yhe idea its ok to be rude, cruel, prejudice and ruthless. I am so sorry- and without sounding prejudice myself as a white women I do not ever choose a white physician. I do not feel heard or feel any connection or awareness. For 30 years, Ive avoided white male physician's and when I deviate from that I always regret it as someone with a complex medical existence. I am glad we are able to talk aboit this and hopefully this will be the change to flip this awful, antiquated, ignorant behavior . Awareness, altruistic, benevolence and a commitment to do no harm should be every person's oath- the hyppocratic oath. This really upsets me because my best care has come from non white physician's and my worst care - whiter than white. I‘be seen many reports like this, but never a statement or synopsis… If the police dept. in CA was racist and outrageous for decades, why would you think it ended there? Hence: these are the wives, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters of the men who were moved from Miss. and Al. from the 50’ and 60’s. It’s a trickle effect.
If any of this was about race, he would not have reached the position of medical director. And yeah there will be a major cut in pay when he was replaced as director.
The racist always hide behind none racist. Most people who say America can't be racist because Obama became president didn't vote him themself. So what they do is hide behind those who voted him and sa look "we" voted a black president. So just because he became director doesn't mean they went many who were against it

I had a PCP from Africa who did a fine job as far as I was concerned; he listened to what I said and did everything he could to address my concerns. But I have friends in the military who and hire doctors for the military and they complain about being pressured to hire black doctors whether or not they are qualified, then having to place the ones who shouldn't have been hired in roles where their shortcomings don't endanger anyone. Meanwhile, even top schools like Harvard make no secret of their willingness to accept students with much lower test scores, as long at they are black. Does this mollycoddling end at medical school? Maybe not. So, it's no surprise that some patients panic when faced with an anesthesiologist or surgeon who is black; they must be wondering how many standards were waived to get them to that level. If this guy is fully qualified, is that fair to him? Of course it isn't, but it's a natural outcome of a system that puts "diversity" over everything important.
You know nothing about medical education and your bias shows with your opening statement about your PCP being great but other physicians in higher specialty were diversity hire. To match into anesthesiology and general surgery your grades and STEP scores needs to be competitive. Every physician in the US needs to take the USMLE and then go to residency where they are trained and then continue on to meet additional certification after the training to show they are competent, not to mention in service training exams. You aren’t going thru a 5 year general surgery program not competent or a danger to patient. They will dismiss you from the program very fast. There are doctors of all colors who can be a risk to patient. That Segway into the Harvard accepting subpar students shows your true bias all along. You should have lead with that instead of sugarcoating your intent.
No , you get accepted these medical schools- because your grandparents were alumni’s- so less not talk about this- the reason they have to allow minorities in because of what the practices of slavery brought- not allowing people to read and right- keeping them from being educated- if black peoples were so incapable of learning- why did the slave masters go to such great extents to keep them from learning to read- because they knew they were some of the most intelligent people on earth- the slaves came over with the knowledge to build- that is how we built this country. The Europeans did not teach the slaves on how to build - they came from the mother land with all that knowledge- that is how worldwide - Africans are hated- the majority of the World’s natural resources are in Africa- diamonds, gold, silver, oil etc.

I would bet it's not true. Most people crying about "racism" turns out not to be racism at all.
Bob Sense, who are you to call me a ding dong, at least I'm smart enough to know that I wasn't there! You little man are out of line, I don't know why you choose to behave like you do, but I suggest you rethink how you communicate with others.
if true? Of course it's true
@Ur a JCat Blood I don't believe him just like I didn't believe Jussie Smollett and Bubba Wallace. Many people including myself can see right thru the racism-hoax. I'll give him 1% chance that he's telling the truth.
@@blokcomNativeFaces As a white person who grew up in the south i would have to disagree. racism is alive and well as ever. I've heard the things that get said behind closed doors.
He is NOT lying. BELIEVE HIM. Shame on Sutter. Shame! I was treated like shit by a non Black doctor at Sutter Alta Bates. How they treated me as a Black patient was literary a nightmare. And I go through racism as a professional in the health field as well. I have been reprimanded for speaking up. This man is a beacon of light going against a Goliath of systemic medical racism.
Use the stairs!!?? What? That's crazy
I can't believe his supervisor told him that.
I can believe it. 🙋🏾♂️I would’ve still taken the elevator though, and the moment I was accused of being intimidating or threatening I would’ve reversed it back onto them.
That's CRAZY. Phenotypically, he looks like he could be MANY other races, even Greek or Italian.
This is showing you that African Americans or blacks are still fighting deep classism and racism in 2024. This story was 1 years ago and updates
As a white person in the South, I am stunned to find out that this type of racism still exists. It may be worse in areas like California, where people of African descent are such a small minority. Here in the South, whites and blacks have grown up together, and I do not see this type of racism taking place.
Yes. They are plenty racists.
Nothing new in the Bay Area . The region of the most progressive 😂. These institutions are systematically racist in it’s structure , but oh well such is life
What about the nurses?
While I’m a Sutter patient and I love my primary, there definitely is a dearth of black doctors in Sutter/PAMF.
Sutter can and must do better.
Palo Alto is about 2% African American. Should we expect to see more than 2% African American doctors?
I think they ought to just pick a black out of a hat and bam, you're a doctor now, go practice on Maryam Dadar over there.
@@wsol80 Exactly.
You don’t hire people based on color of skin
@@TiredAmerican247 Unless its based on affirmative action.
As a black Registered Nurse, I thought this is happening to us only! :(
Amy please speak out and fight all such racism. Most HR will punish the blacks and protect the whites. But remember, organizations who practiced such practices tend to offer poor customer services.
No ma’am, I’m a Black social worker admin, it’s over here too.
@@eboyd2478 That’s so sad!!! 15 years ago, when I first moved to US, I thought the law was so strict here about this.
For real, I thought it only occurred in the past.

Yup. And their call to action against raycizm ain't working.
Let me tell you something, I support these black doctors and please doctors come out with your truth.. This is America Spread, and a Class action suit should be the number 1 thing for African American doctors in the USA. I hear about this all of the time.....My number 1 doctors have been black doctors, they seem to care more...Do a Class Action Suit. Let America know black doctors, your own Experience in the Health Field with Racism We must put an end to Racism in the Health Field as well..It has gotten Worse since the Dr's merged into Company doing.. Many are Wondeing, "Where are our black Dr's? Purposely Ignoring them... Happening in every State in America...
The Bay Area doesn’t deserve people like Dr. Nyong’o.
I believe it
Good. Kinda. The hospital system itself permits different payments. Two doctors, same exact cases and one is making twice as much. Universal healthcare would stop it but, that's fixing the problem. Equality is not in healthcare and this case could be a start.
Maybe someday the United States can have universal healthcare. I’m 63 so maybe my kids will be alive to see it happen.
@@Nan-59 Hope so too. I work side by side at the hospital with people making 3x what I do. 5x. Same job. 😁. I didn't avoid racism only that they share some details. It's a big mess there.
😢sadly happens everywhere, you notice evil in the eyes of soulless people
I believe it, same group against the black little mermaid... No matter which you put it, same groups
I am not surprised this is the truth almost everywhere and anywhere. It's very shameful.
These doctors have a heck of tolerance to suffer thru such discrimination. Black people seem to be to scared to confront these discrimination and belittling and disconcerting happenings against them .
We are not scared. We are outnumbered. White people are the only ones that can stop racism. It’s not on us.
Its real and continues to happen. In my almost 40years in healthcare I have experienced discrimination. I was labeled " angry, aggressive, & confrontational". I have been physically/verbally attacked in addition to being called the "N" word by both staff and patients all while attempting to carry out my job in a professional manner
The AVP at my latest contract attempted to denigrate and label me " aggressive" (after speaking with me for all of 2 minutes), and made several "ageism" comments during an important closed door meeting which included ALL of their upper leadership.
Were you angry ? Were you aggressive ?
Maybe look in the mirror
You sound horrible.
Ageism is discrimination. Thanks Grand ma on the go, for sharing your experiences. If more people speak up then more knowledge will be shared and people can better understand all the problems at this hospital system.
@@VedickDragonin a white racist person mind that is how they see us- but in actuality they project off on us what they really are- angry, aggressive, bitter- no matter how they come at black people we still manage to trump over evil.
I’m glad you called them out doctor!!!
Sickening!! I left Sutter last December, glad I did
Judy what were your experiences that you encountered while you worked there? Did you questioned, why this hospital system had few blacks and why customer services was so bad? Look forward hearing your perspectives. Thanks
I have no doubt this is truth! I have friends who have suffered the same problem because they are black.
Very sad and also sickening 😢
He's an immigrant black American. Nonimmigrant Black American professionals don't even get the opportunity to work these kinds of jobs
Thanks Douge for this recently updates. Diversity is a big problem in most large healthcare systems. Same thing in New York City. I'm assuming that California areas will face the same problems

What's new. This isn't just happening in hospitals. This is happening all across corporate America. Very quietly. Under the radar.
Good Reporting====These things are hard to describe sometimes====a deep understanding of racism is needed====Thank You======AAA+++Bedford, Texas
Troy I would agree with you. Most media don't report racism and this station did a fair job, although I felt the reporter came across with an attitude because his tone, makes the story seems not true. So racism needs more empathy in order to reporting it. Thanks 👍
I have seen this happen numerous times at one of the big medical facilities in California. This facility I am talking about talk about Humankindness. What a Joke. These type of treatments most be STOPPED.
Too many blacks ruin things for the others.
@@VedickDragon Too many white people do the same. Look at what y'all have done to the WORLD.

What the real hell?
Shocked but not surprised. It’s not only his story, there are other 7 involved in the lawsuit as well. Just because you don’t see it or because it doesn’t happen to you it means that it is not going on. Big respected institutions tend to sweep things under the rug. Sad that he had to sue, lawsuits are long an uncomfortable with much victim blaming. But I hope the truth come forth whatever it might be. Most probably it will settle out of court and be hushed.
All people pay. Whatever you do you’ll pay.
Women, black, disabled, poor etc . If you are not male, white, wealthy and healthy you are screwed. 2:27
So sick
Sutter Health can miss me with their performative “diversity” statement!
This isn’t diagnosing discrimination. That’s adverse reaction based on doctors discriminating people with certain health conditions and brushing off their symptom. Also can gear towards Medical gas lighting.
Perhaps the solution is to start your own hospitals/private facility.
I am so sorry this ignorance is still going on, even in the professional world.
Recent years seem to have given
(( some people)) yhe idea its ok to be rude, cruel, prejudice and ruthless.
I am so sorry- and without sounding prejudice myself as a white women
I do not ever choose a white physician.
I do not feel heard or feel any connection or awareness.
For 30 years,
Ive avoided white male physician's and when I deviate from that I always regret it as someone with a complex medical existence.
I am glad we are able to talk aboit this and hopefully this will be the change to flip this awful, antiquated, ignorant behavior .
Awareness, altruistic, benevolence
and a commitment to do no harm should be every person's oath-
the hyppocratic oath.
This really upsets me because my best care has come from non white physician's and my worst care - whiter than white.
I am ashamed of my own ancestry on a regular basis because there is no excuse in this day and age.

Were going to make it no matter how much some of them try to get rid of us or say were notv" qualified " because their sooo qualified because of their skin..but they'll say" not true we work hard" like other folks don't or take the same state board tests..we work harder just for the respect we deserve to be honest...so ignorant and disgusting its sad.if they dont like folks why go to them if their not going to treat you with respect or treat you at all for your issues..their actions are why some folks dont go to the doctor's a lot of the time..because of trust issue hearing these stories can't blame them..glad these stories are being told so qe know
Use the stairs because whites are uncomfortable? That sounds over the top, implausible. And what man is going to shy away rather than speak right back at that, especially a doctor, who, if you've ever worked in healthcare you know are very confident. I'm sure he did experience discrimination, but that part sounds a little ridiculous!
I couldn't find one black primary care doctor at Kaiser! I'm pretty sure that's why they won't show you the data.
He's barely black and they were still upset.
He is black but just fair complexion- we come in all shades- but we are still black people.
Where is he because I only want a black doctor
I’m wondering what really happened.
Sutter, do better.
They make all of these rules then break them!
medical racism!
Thank you. I want to know a follow up as I also am at sutter and this is concerning.
Check out the book Black Man in a White Coat.
I‘be seen many reports like this, but never a statement or synopsis…
If the police dept. in CA was racist and outrageous for decades, why would you think it ended there? Hence: these are the wives, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters of the men who were moved from Miss. and Al. from the 50’ and 60’s. It’s a trickle effect.
…affect.
Nothing surprising
If any of this was about race, he would not have reached the position of medical director. And yeah there will be a major cut in pay when he was replaced as director.
It's only about race to him. You don't count, so it's not about you either.👍
Good point
The racist always hide behind none racist. Most people who say America can't be racist because Obama became president didn't vote him themself. So what they do is hide behind those who voted him and sa look "we" voted a black president. So just because he became director doesn't mean they went many who were against it
Another evil structure. Nursing is just as Fvup!
Hey blk folks,we must ask for blk md's always. Make sure the hospital you go to always get this request and when they can not accommodate your request file a complaint form against the facility. When the board continues to get these complaints they will accommodate you...if not begin to put it on social media and name these institutions and where they are. Start a campaign of dissatisfaction of distrust in their facility. MAKE ALITTLE NOISE AND CONTINUE UNTIL CHANGE IS MADE!!!
Scary!

Not shocking.
You are an absolute racist.
