- A doctor in Central Mississippi has made it his mission to prevent patients from losing their legs and feet to peripheral artery disease and diabetes. Dr. Foluso Fakorede spoke with Anne-Marie Green and Vladimir Duthiers about the diseases' impact on the Black community and the bill introduced in Congress to help reduce the number of amputations.
I applaud this doctor. I pray he makes a difference.

@@dr.folusofakorede7469 I visited padadvocate dot com to find more info about Cardiovascular Solutions of Central Mississippi because my father has several of the problems that are discussed in this video and several of the pages were mostly blank. The pages that were blank were the Services, New Patients, About, and Contact pages. The Home page also appears to be blank as well until you scroll further down to see the "In The News" section but under "Education About PAD" it is also blank.
The state of the website gives the impression that this is not a fully functional health care facility. I just wanted to respectfully make you aware of these issues.

I noticed this very thing in the VA hospitals over 20 years ago. These men didnt loose limbs from the war, they lost limbs from medical and nutritional neglect.
They lost their limbs because they eat high carb foods and don't exercise,it's not the white mans fault that black folks are obese , refuse to exercise and eat right.Medication alone will not control diabetes.
we are not pushing people to make better choices in their lives, we just keep making excuses and thinking that will make a change .

After overhearing a white doctor give misleading medical advice to a black patient, I made it MY BUSINESS to pay ATTENTION to what was being told to them. My biggest takeaway from my time there, NEVER NEVER EVER take their word as gospel. NEVER!

@Lamont Gravely I see what you are saying in terms of what professions are popular among the youth and highlighted in society BUT make no mistake Black doctors (in all facets of the medical indusrty) ARE in practice.
I have ALWAYS sought out African Doctors because there are more than a few in practice. (Because in African culture they are encouraged to become Doctors so within there culture. Thankfully a lot of them come to the US with a focus on helping vs just making money.
I've ALWAYS sought them out on purpose

Physician is African,
Dentists is Black American
Orthodontist was Carribbean
Dermatologist was Black American.
My point is that we need to intentionally seek them out for our Healthcare because they exist.

There are a lot of Black American Nurses but I'd love to see more Doctors too among us as well.

We don't always have access to endocrinologists and eye specialists....we have basic care but the specialty care required need to have copay coverage we just can not afford
Yes, even dentistry. They have all the billboards that tell people to pull aching teeth instead of bi annual preventative treatment.
We have to eat and move to healthiness. I am learning the importance of exercise and even stretching. Revolutionary when I found out that you have to learn to stretch and strengthen my FEET!!! Bad foot strength and posture wreak havoc on the whole body right along with not drinking enough water!

This doctor is right, prevention is the key. Because when it comes to PAD, or Diabetes and Amputation it’s a slippery slope. First they chop off a toe, then the foot, next the leg below the knee. Then they start on the other limbs. Once they start Choppin’, there ain’t no stoppin’...until you’re Dead 💀!! Thank you for sharing your video and important message 🙏

Sadly, it took twice a week treatment (debridement, etc.), over several months just to heal a small diabetic foot ulcer on a friend. Very expensive, so I can imagine how many black people are dismissed. Tragic 😭
For patients who regularly visit their doctors amputations should be quite rare. Doctors should be catching diabetic changes much earlier and have their patients on FASTING regimens to eliminate diabetes and obesity and many other related diseases and also amputations. Also can someone who knows tell me whether obesity also plays a part in the very high incidence of Black maternal deaths?
Dr. Fakorede, is A beautiful man, inside and out. His lovely smile and demeanor are added bonuses to anyone who is fortunate to have him as their primary care physician.
My husband at 49 had his toe amputated after blood vessels in his toe narrowed and a pressure sore developed. No history of diabetes or hypertension. He probably worked through the pain longer than he should have BUT also insurance was a barrier. Recommended treatment like hyperbaric therapy & wound centers would not serve him because he wasn't diabetic. We are in Maryland lots of doctors but still it didn't matter, we went in circles, saw multiple doctors including a vascular surgeon. Losing a body part is a trauma to an individual...
Nothing is about prevention is this country, it’s all about profit. Doctors don’t listen to black patients concerns. I’ve had to switch doctors several times because the doctors didn’t take me seriously and especially as a woman, they like to say that you’re just being hormonal. It’s really disgusting.

Me too I have been mistreated by white asian and Indian doctors. When I speak up about the lack of care I am told that I cannot return to the facility.

I'm white and they don't listen to me either. The worst thing that happened to the medical profession was when they organized into PPO's and were forced to adhere to those organization's rules. I have heard some excellent physicians are withdrawing from the medical "unions." I have been rejected by several doctors because the PPO thought it was taking too much time to treat a rare genetic condition.

LAWD!!! I wish my brother could've met this wonderful doctor before he had part of his leg amputated last year. He lives in Southaven, MS. and he found out after amputation he didn't need it. It's causing extreme depression for him.🥺

Dr. Fakorede has an exceptional staff!!! I called a couple of times desperate to help my brother. Chris not only returned my call he took time to clearly hear me & give sound direction.
This was on a Friday yet he called back with a local Cardio doctor within 30 minutes. I appreciate counting with no regard of world position.

Next task decrease black women hysterectomies d/t fibroids
They do have a higher instance of fibroid tumors but if you choose not to understand that I applaud you and anyone else that wants to go back sixty years and lie that life.
@@janet3518 yes Fibroid occurs more with black women however hysterectomy is given as the only option.
Other options: uterine fibroid embolization, hysteroscopic myomectomy.
Also prevention is important as well- tackle obesity.
There are other options apart from hysterectomy.
I have noted over recent years black women at economic levels are having birth complications. From local women here in MS to Beyonce’ & Serena Williams, these occurrences persist. I haven’t found an answer yet, and it is not something that has always been.
Black people cannot seem to dodge systematic bullets, we are more likely to suffer racial disparities almost everywhere we go...thank God for this doctor, we need to keep him in our prayers.
Fight for reparations both economic and political. This will benefit ADOS who've suffered the historic systematic anti-Black racism and trickle to Black immigrants who come here and aren't aware or prepared for America's brand of white supremacy.

@@jmmr77845 I think you need to actually look into some data. In general there is an obesity problem that the community definitely needs to take accountability for absolutely. I say this to the middle class African Americans. I would also recommend that they exercise in the house, however diet is more of a factor than exercise. For those in poverty healthy food is more expensive. I watched a doc, and it was crazy because water, WATER was more expensive to soda. It was disgusting.
Love that this Doctor moved from the comforts of his home to help others.
I hope this doctor considers making an educational youtube channel that would cover prevention and care of diabetes and heart disease. Then he and other doctors can refer patients to it!

Diet and exercise are the number one preventative measures and knowing your health history. If you know what previous members had as Doc mentioned you can better educate yourself and be your own advocate

Even for women to have natural birth is an inconvenience to alot of doctors who only perform Csection because it takes less time.
yes Black women have a higher incidence of c- section than white women why? The sad thing is the children are sicker because they did not enter the birth canal and get the mothers bacteria needed for a healthy immune system. Fun fact: children who are born by c-section have the bacteria from the doctor and nurses that’s deliver the baby 😢

Did you watch the video? Can you understand the graphics? Victim shaming isn’t the way. Other people get the same diseases and DO NOT get amputated. They get newer, innovative, limb saving treatments.
THE ISSUE IS STATISTICALLY: if you’re Black they cut off your leg WITHOUT even trying anything else. Also, you don’t get the screenings you need when you see the doctor.

I’m a nurse and am so glad that this doctor is doing to come forward with these critical points and I truly hope our people are listening and will take responsibility for their lives. I spend time with my patients when I see these problems in order to educate them as best I can.

Thank you doctor. That gives me so much hope as a Mississippi resident who has a loved one with type two diabetes.
I have type 2 diabetes on 2 insulins, I and have lost my entire toenails on my big toe. My feet are numb due to neuropathy, but I was denied disability because I dont look like I am dying inside. Someone needs to bring a voice to this silent killer. I can't watch or dance with my 5 grandchildren without my feet.

Since poor people in general lack good health insurance, they will not get regular checkups that would catch diabetes early and even if diagnosed will not get the care and education about how to manage it. For Type 2 diabetes there is a lot about nutrition that can help keep your blood sugar levels in check.
We desperately need Medicare For All.

Hi I am an African American 66yr young woman in good health due to my awareness since 1970s I loss 47lbs now 125lbs. I do intimittiting fasting 1 meal per day to prevent future health issues. However I live in N.J in a predominantly African American community and I noticed for many yrs that many people have leg amputations. I know a few people who had this surgery and eventually passed. I think this is surgical genocide in my community. This is the first time I've heard someone bring this up. I believe this is a deliberate surgery through for doctors exploiting my people its sad. I have lots of awareness of the medical discrimination history. This hatred because of people not knowing what's going on. Thanks for bringing this to light.

Patients HAVE to be vigilant about their own health as well. Get those necessary checkups as well! I applaud him!
Thank you Doctor. But we know the system is designed to do what it’s doing, excluding blks from specialist and QUALITY care. Even blks with good insurance, pay medical/health premiums and still are not recommended or told about better treatments.
It is much cheaper to do amputee surgery than do the treatment to save your limbs
I am getting treatment to save my leg I needed a pic line for iv antibiotics x3 a day
seeing wound care every 2 weeks, infection disease every week , home health
X2 every week for dressing change, blood drawn every
week by home health
Supplies sent to home every week, it is helping the wound is much better

My son just had his leg amputated a week ago his sugar levels were 1000 plus we were told he could have died his kidneys were damaged so I don't know if his leg could have been saved he is totally devastated

I know a young black female from Mississippi who was sterilized at 18 for no valid reason
there are stories about women having hysterectomies against their will during c-sections too, I believe my grandmother had this happen.

Great! I worked as a registered nurse in Alabama and noticed this problem. I tried to advocate for one of my patients to get a second opinion but she was under too much pressure and had the amputation done. So sad.

We need to address these issues in Hispanic communities also. Definitely need better healthcare for all minorities and to address issues of mistrust and community mindsets that doctors are the last resort. We need to address especially cardiovascular diseases and diabetes prevention in these communities

Ahh labels... What about Hispanics excludes Brown people? How come A_Zef can't just make a statement of concern for Hispanics? Aren't the majority of them Brown? I know they can be just as prejudice aa whytes, but many identify as Black Latino (unless you're referring to Spanish identifying Hispanics) and suffer colorism within their community as well as racism. As usual, "Hispanics" will benefit from the advancements of the struggle of African Americans as well. When Black people advance, all other people rise, i.e. Civil War, Civil Rights Act, #MeToo movement, etc. Not the time or situation for WhatAboutism.
