I love JJ Cale. Not just his songs and his playing but his authenticity and integrity to being only the original...who he was. I wish I could have seen him live.
I'm an old Vietnam Era Vet and really enjoy your videos! I feel very fortunate to have grown up and able to listen to the Greatest music and singers of all time!!!
JJ Cale is such an underrated & under-known-of artist I think…for being as amazing as he was…really a guitarist’s guitar player…I luv his laid-back sound & style…his voice was very unique as well…when I first heard the “Troubadour” album my mind was blown…the tracks were so different for the time it came out…nothing sounded like that…the grooves are so tasty…nothing overplayed…nothing too long…just perfect I think.
Bill you’re a lucky guy to have played with JJ, but he’s just as lucky to have a friend like you. Please if you have more stories of him tell us all of them!!!! Thanks Otis!!!
I lived in an Airstream for 10 years. Winter in Manitoba is no joke. Aluminum is not an insulator. After a snow storm I needed a mallet to bust the ice off the door just to get out. My breath made ice on my pillow.
"Naturally" is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time, and every time "Magnolia" comes on I pick up my guitar and play along. I'm not a great guitarist by any stretch of the imagination, but somehow I can fit right into JJ's groove on that tune. These stories confirm what a unique person JJ was. No surprise he wasn't into any kind of bullshit.
This couldn’t be better. I first heard JJ Cale around 1971. He became a big inspiration to me. I saw him once in a small club in Charlotte NC around 1973. He never faced the audience but I assumed he might be high or something but I guess he was just shy. Those three guys brought the house down that night. Great interview!
I saw JJ and Mark Knopfler perform together in December of 1985 in London. It was billed as Dire Straits as they had a big record out at that time. It was my first time seeing JJ as I had only heard of him from the Clapton covers. He was the most chill guy ever!!🎸
Great interview. Cool you mentioned coming up to Vancouver and Victoria. I'm in Victoria. We don't get recognized often but we're huge JJ fans up here.
I check out most of the vids from Mr. Gibbs, and have done so for a few years now. As a big Cale fan, this video is my favorite. I soaked in every word from Mr. Kenner. Thank you!
This interview is a riot. Kenner tells it like it is. So entertaining. Glad I found it. Yeah, I saw JJ Cale. I was pretty darn lucky to have seen him at the Santa Monica Civic when his first LP came out, the one with a raccoon on the cover. I can't even remember who the headliner was, I was that impressed with him. He didn't say a word. Just three musicians sitting on folding chairs plus the drummer, playing music that was so different, distinctive, nothing else like it. Then many years later, I saw him at McCabes Guitars in Santa Monica, about 3 times. Just him & Christine. A great venue, small & intimate. Very lucky to have seen & heard him in the flesh. He is missed.
Big JJ Cale fan here, and I love the thumbnail showing him with his Airstream. I have one from 1958 sitting near our house. (not in good shape, sadly.) I saw JJ Cale in ca. 1975 in West-Berlin, I believe at the Philharmonie, a very avant garde building with excellent acoustics. Only problem was the set was very short.... probably without an encore LOL.
I saw JJ at a place named PB Scotts in Blowing Rock, NC on a snowy night in Jan. of '77. We came out after a great, almost 3 hour show to 8 inches of fresh snow. One of my favorite concert memories. Saw some great shows at PB's starting about '76, the ones I can remember; JJ, BB King, George Thorogood, Nighthawks, Jerry Jeff Walker, Papa John Creach, Harry Chapin, Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Dregs, Leon Russell, and regional favorites like Snuff and Super Grit Cowboy Band. Hate PB's is gone. RIP JJ (&PBs). Thank You!
Miss those old clubs that had great acts. We had some great ones in the bay area. Saw some of same acts as you mentioned and regional favorites. A lot of bloomfied, garcia"s side band and many more.
Another epic one, Otis! YOu get the feeling that ol' Bill could tell road tales for hours and never run out. Smiled when he referenced the old 328 Performance Hall (RIP).
I was a huge fan but only got to see him three times since he didnt tour much. One time around early 2000s, I met him before one of the shows when he was doing promo at the radio station I was working at, and he was very nice. He mentioned that he lived in a trailer in the Cali desert. I didnt want to come off as a the type of super fan i really was, so I just tried to play it cool talking to him. I did sneak in my old DAT rig that night and recorded his show though...Then I saw him one more time with Clapton a couple of years later at that Clapton guitar thing....Tony Joe White and JJ sounds like the ultimate to me.
I’m a big JJ fan, saw him in December ‘85 with Dire Straits. The rumours back in the day were he lived in a caravan lined with money in the desert….. kinda true I guess😅 I’d heard about him before the ‘80’s from the Clapton covers, but living in London I couldn’t see him much. When he came on with Mark Knopfler it was a complete shock, everyone cheered loudly but I’m not sure if they knew who he was! It was in the Hammersmith Odeon, small venue but great sound. I often watch the JJ documentaries he mentions, To Tulsa and Back and the one from the ‘70’s…. Long live JJ!!❤
This is really good stuff. I love hearing these stories. In fact, I can't remember a time I've ever enjoyed hearing someone talk about their experiences more. This was really, really good.
This was great. I have the majority of his music and every month or so i spin a couple. I miss him. Glad he made it up to Canada, though am on the other coast still glad he had fan's here.
This is one of the best of otis' too bad I discovered JJJ late in life but I had a friend from the Midwest. That I used to gym with that used to play. All these country songs taught me so much. I love those guys from the south
Another outstanding podcast. Otis......you are the Gandolf of musical knowledge. Tne guests you have are outstanding.....and their related stories are priceless. Peace.
Really great insights to JJ and who he was.... He mentions Pat Mclauphlin...never heard of him. Searched youtube and now so sad that I never listened before! Found some jams with him and Kenny Greenberg...overwhelmed.
i love jj cale a whole lot more than i already did now that shirt reminds me when you see a piece of paper or empty sort of lol space that says usually in big text this space intentionally left blank which i joke is in my brain anyway i hope we get more people like these in our lives
My music and business partner Delaney Bramlett and I would visit John or he would show up at Delaney's Ranch. He was a fine man who didn't trust banks. John was Delaney and Bonnie's first guitar player and would stand behind amps and Delaney would have to yell JJ when it came time for him to take a ride in a song. Often time he would bring equipment he bought and didn't want to Delaney......we always laughed. He showed up once with an acoustic guitar duct taped picked on the front and the back of the guitar was missing....it sounded unreal.
I had two tickets to a show of his in LA. I was so excited I bought the tickets months in advance and like an idiot I totally forgot the date and missed it. I never got over that
I liked the story about him mixing with different speakers in different rooms, and not letting the pressing people mess with the master. I've always wondered if Audie Ashworth had something to do with his "sound" of those early albums or what. Nothing else sounds like those first 4 or 5 albums.
I saw J.J. Cale open up for traffic in 1972 when traffic was promoting their low spark of high heel boys album and J.J. Cale came out solo playing on his amplified acoustic and it sound amazing. He was there playing music from his first album Naturally I’ll never forget the tone of his guitar playing that night
these are happening to be the highlights of these days thanks brother Otis i could listen to this ole boy read the dang phone book much less tell his colorful cool tales the real deal heah - SJOCR
Bill tells a great story. I've loved JJ Cales music for long time and loved that he didn't suffer fools in the Industry etc. "To Tulsa and back " was up on RUclips for a little while . It was so great ! Sadly the rights owners took it down for some reason.
Loved JJ's music. Saw him in Vancouver in the late 70's at the QE Theatre. Was a great show but was caught off guard with him not addressing the audience. Never seen that before. He sat on a chair turned looking sideways the whole show with a big hat and shades on. No encore either. Was disappointed in his stage manner but the music was awesome.
Not Ensenada, that's in Mexico. JJ lived in Valley Center CA which is East of Escondido. The album he made with Clapton is The Road To Escondido. JJ had a studio at his home in Valley Center. He would frequent local music stores. Clapton hung out in Escondido while they recorded the album. He was spotted at the local book stores at the time. JJ's grave is in Oceanside CA. His grave marker is steps away from my grandparents.
yes i had the doc tulsa and back tb show producer said he was going to have to lip sync he said no im a musician not an actor and wanted to be a songwriter producer not interested in being a star he also as you know had a,background as a sound engineer
Do we have any JJ Cale fans out there?
Did you see him live?
What are your favorite songs?
So many questions...
Definitely admire him 👍👍
An Everymans musician

I like his version of they call me the breeze.
@@marceldagenais1893 I believe he rode and was first to record that song.
@@johnnyrocco Often wondered that ,watch the going back to Tulsa concert with Clapton.
These chats with Bill are really great, he's just 100% real.
I’m not familiar with this gentleman, but he’s priceless. Couldn’t stop watching.
That’s Bill Kenner. He’s a nice nice person and wonderful soul.
Otis please get more JJ Cale stories!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

That sounds scary. You could have froze to death
Aluminum is great for that coffee pot that's frozen solid. 😅. Been there.
My favorite guitar player. My favorite singer / songwriter. Amazing ears, amazing recording skills. No more to say about that.
An Airstream is a nice trailer and a good place to be for an extended stay.
"Naturally" is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time, and every time "Magnolia" comes on I pick up my guitar and play along. Bill Kenner, outstanding once again!! I could listen to this man for days. Real deal. Thank you Otis Gibbs.
Best interview ever, Otis. Laughed my ass off! Gonna go down the Bill Kenner rabbit hole now.

JJ cale with leon Russell at paradise studios 1979 is some of the best jams I’ve heard.
I've been living in an Airstream since 2018! Only way to fly!
Sounds like he’s had a lot of fun so far. Thanks to both of you.😊
What a great take on JJ Cale by Bill Kenner!
Otis, thank you for documenting all of these stories.
That was fantastic! As an old JJ Cale fan. I just dug this show. Thank you very much.
Great interview. Cool you mentioned coming up to Vancouver and Victoria. I'm in Victoria. We don't get recognized often but we're huge JJ fans up here.
Got one here! " if you're ever in Oklahoma" would be my choice for Favorite ( Buck Graves on Dobro) or "Playing in the Street" killer groove!

Thanks Bill and Otis. Another gem.
Thanks for allowing us to listen in on the interesting conversation.

TJW n Cale!!❤
I lived in an Airstream 3/15-4/17. Everybody should spend time in an Airstream. I also play(ed) guitar. I guess that's about it as far as me and JJ.
“He had a temper?” - “He did THEN!” I laughed out loud.
So glad Otis has recorded all these wonderful musicians like Bill Kenner. What a cultural treasure trove.
Thank you Bill & Otis
I saw jj live at Sweetwater, in Mill Valley, California...FANTASTIC ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Fascinating, I've never been able to find any info about Cale playing with Dire Straits before
What a blast! This is the inside scoop. Best to you both, Otis and Bill.
Huge Cale fan here. This is solid gold! Thanks so much for posting.
An old Airstream was my first place after my dad gave me the boot at 18 yrs old 😅
((Fyi: @ 16:03 'Ensenada' > he's most likely meaning "Road to Escondido" in north San Diego.
Clapton had a place here also.))
Love these stories. 👍🙏

This guy should write a book!!!

Another outstanding podcast. Otis......you are the Gandolf of musical knowledge. Tne guests you have are outstanding.....and their related stories are priceless. Peace.
Yet another great interview Otis!
Huge Cale fan. One of his last albums has a song on it called Leaving In The Morning. It is an absolute gem.
don't get no better. thanks otis.
Fate of a fool, is my favorite guitar break. But there are so many. True Legend !
Thank you, from Tulsa! I can't get enough of this stuff. So damn good!!
Amazing to me all you are able to remember. What a treasure.
Really great insights to JJ and who he was.... He mentions Pat Mclauphlin...never heard of him. Searched youtube and now so sad that I never listened before! Found some jams with him and Kenny Greenberg...overwhelmed.
Bring it on back is my favorite.
Interesting cover by KANSAS on their first album.
Happened to watch JJ and Leon Russell last night and that Harmony Frankenstein guitar is simply amazing when JJ played it.
i love jj cale a whole lot more than i already did now

Cajun Moon and Thirteen Days are some killer tunes!
same handle several weeks ago in store of all places cajun moon arron neville came on
any song off Really- soulin, right down here, playing in the street, everything will be alright. the whole album is so good
All of J.J. Cable's records from the 70s are all masterpieces. PLAY LOUD
MR Kenner is Terrific ❤

JJ had a Burst in the ‘70’s which he used all over the ‘5’ album. Peter Frampton owns it now!
A guy I worked with had a JJ Cale album, I don't remember the name of it. It was one of our favorite cd's, wore it out.
Love JJ Cale, but never saw him live. Never had the Bucks for that !😅
I remember visiting JJ Cale in an old house in Murfreesboro Tn. I guess mid seventies.
Bill is a national treasure.

Bill's trying to remember the 'Road to Escondido' album at 16:00 by Cale and Clapton, Ride the River is my favorite on it.
What a nice, humble gentleman
Thank you for posting this it was one der phull.
Great interview thx
Man, that side shot camera is a beautiful composition
Bill rules .
Thank you
You might think this guy is full of it with his tall tales, but five minutes in, you know he’s for real. Great dude.
Love JJ
I was told he owned a cabbage farm outside St. Augustine Florida in the county. This was in the early 90's.
Captain Beefheart lived in an Airstream too.
It was The Road To Escondido, a once rural area north of San Diego
Cale maintained total artistic control, and would not compromise his integrity.
yes i had the doc tulsa and back tb show producer said he was going to have to lip sync he said no im a musician not an actor and wanted to be a songwriter producer not interested in being a star he also as you know had a,background as a sound engineer
Pipe down Otis, and let your guest speak.
Bill seems like a fun hang.
Just Thanks
Never seen him live but watched him on Claptons crossroads
would love to hear this "bluegrass" album
Charley Johnson's best album is "Ensenada"
Good stuff
